Weirdest thing about Ben Cooper masks, for me, was how the nose area inside would start collecting condensation almost immediately. I've tried breathing through the tiny mouth hole, as well, and that was just all kinds of Not Right. I could just barely hear my eyelashes brush against the eye holes. A surprisingly sensory experience, all around, really.

You all are lucky, the rubber band on mine broke about 5 minutes after I got it. Then I got to feel the sensations of Scotch tape or the edges of 5 staples against the side of my face for an entire night.

Sometimes a Frankenstein combo of Wilco/B&M/QD stores covers some of the Woolworth viibes, but nothing beats the original! I can just remember when the closed they were offloading loads of VHS & vinyl thinking 'who would want those?'!

Dude, as a kid I saved KMART, Rose's, Eckerd's, and any other Halloween sales papers I could get my hands on. My mom threw em out when I moved out at 17. Had a HUGE stack of em. Like 85-94.....

I was terrified of Freddy as a kid and I still wanted and begged for that mask (and got it). Considering the absolutely terrible Michael Myers masks back then, for a relatively cheap Freddy mask, I don't think it looked half bad. The monster can't get you if you become the monster...

I loved all the newspaper ad and other assorted mail order catalogs that were devoted to Halloween. fantastically educational. I was too little to remember this age, but a lot of it continued right into the time I do have memory of. My "weird noisemaking thing nobody ever thinks of" was the motion-activated wee-woo spooky decorations, which continued decently into the 21st century. It was hilarious how often you'd hear the exact same sounds coming from drastically different products, because.. that's just like a chip you would buy in bulk I think, from some chinese factory.

The ben cooper "coveralls" were more like a cheap vinyl table cloth glued (or melted or sewn) together with some tie strings. Let's not kid ourselves... us 80's (and 70's) kids know.. we were wearing tablecloths. Coincidently I wore one to my kindergarten halloween day (snoopy) and got cupcake icing all over it and had a'lil fit. In 1988 I was 5, it's the first Halloween I really remember. I had a Snow White Ben Cooper "costume" (even though I had not seen the movie at that point, it was probably a last minute purchase by my parents, lol). The only thing I remember from the whole night is not being able to see shit and the smock smelling like a chemical factory. (Everything reeked of vinyl fumes, cigarettes, and car exhaust back then. Definitely don't miss that.)
I didn't see Halloween III until a few years ago but it fucking rules! It's so unhinged but in the best way. Perfect October movie.

I don't think we had any Woolworth stores where I live. I've never heard of them before watching the video. I have that same A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 VHS movie as shown in the ad! I got mine from Kroger back in the early 90s. It's my fave out of the whole franchise as well. Even the NES game features "classes" of characters featured in that movie, such as an acrobat and wizard. I'm pretty sure the ninja is a reference to Alice's brother from the fourth movie.

Wait, Woolworth is not a thing anymore in the USA? Huh, that's weird. Here in Mexico, Woolworth is still alive and kicking. After using some Google-fu, I found out that the Woolworth brand still exists here because some mexican executives bought up the local version of Woolworth in 1997 to run it as an independent department stores chain. Also, german executuves did the same with the german version of Woolworth in 1998, so technically both Mexico and Germany will still get Woolworth Halloween circulars in 2022.

The ninja craze began with Cannon Films releasing Enter the Ninja in 1981. It was successful enough that they realized they had found a new B movie genre to exploit. So we got Revenge of the Ninja in 1983 and the beginning of the American Ninja franchise in 1985. By that point it was thoroughly dug into the popular culture. Frank Miller's iconic run on Daredevil with The Hand (which directly inspired both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Tick to parody it) and a few other things would just drive it even further.

It was always important to me to be a House with Good Candy. We were in kind of a rich neighborhood, so we very much were never the best- we couldn't compete with the dentist who gave out books and toothbrushes, or anyone giving out full sized candy bars - but we put in the effort. A mix of chocolate and non-chocolate. Snickers and Wonka Mix. Never any Tootsie Rolls or Mary Janes. Mom always stuck some Dum-Dums in there, though, convinced that you were supposed to give suckers to babies (you're not, the stick is a choking hazard).
