What I love is now you can get the lens cine-modded by iron glass with the pl mount, gears and new blades, but not rehouse it making it around $400-$500 if you are on a budget.
That oval bokeh mod is what makes it stand out IMO. I've had 3 of these and 2 were honestly shite. The third was somewhat sharp but i really had to step down to like F4 to be able to use it.
Fun lenses. But kinda overhyped.
Yeah I agree I even own the lens and don’t use it on my pocket 4K as much. It does have a really nice look if you’re going for something dreamier. I own the SMC Takumar 50mm F1.4 and a rare Takumar 24mm F3.5 and I love the look I get with that set
I think youve gotten duds, Im from the eastern block so these are literally pennies here, so ive had the opportunity to play with a bunch of them. You have to pay attention to what factory they were made in, what year, serial number, blade count, etc. There are tiers of quality with these and you really dont wanna be getting the lowest one. Its a fairly sharp lens when you get the "correct" one. Here is some info: forum.mflenses.com/complete-list-of-helios-lenses-getting-closer-t26100.html
Basically look for a KMZ model with at least two zeroes in the serial number and youll be golden. IF you are in europe, especially eastern europe, shop in person.
comparison between them: ruclips.net/video/mV3MSfl-NYI/видео.html
Ive got a 44-2 and its plenty sharp, at least for 18MP apsc in my usage, you might’ve just been really unlucky and gotten dud copies
Haven’t watched the video yet, but I’m excited already! One of my favourite RUclips creators reviewing the lens project I’m involved in ♥️
🙏🏼
@@spensersakurai I was a little nervous watching the video just in case you say it's horrible, but I'm so glad you've mirrored my own thoughts about this lens and the rehousing, which was born from a true love for the 44-2
@@alanbesedin I have a Panasonic GH4 and still want the PL mount. Is there an adapter for MFT mounts?
@@RealEkcreations I saw one from Soonwell.. haven't tried it yet but looks good quality. Will definitely get one when I happen to have an Ironglass Helios VLFV.
@@GlennUpgraded saw the same. Don’t know much on it but it does. I saw also a fotodiox and a metabones but they’re very pricey. Might go with the Soonwell
Nice video. We want more videos about vintage lenses please. I watched one of your older videos about FD lenses - especially the one about the 55mm 1.2 way above my price range - and I decided to give a try to a FD 24mm 2.8 and FD 50mm 1.4 on my EOS R and my XT3. It really gives a beautiful look to my videos. Thanks Spencer
The 44-2 name means that it's the 44th lens project KMZ made, 2nd generation or version 2 or mark II. The naming of the 58/2 lens iterations gets a bit complicated at some point when they introduce multicoating and different mounts. Eg. Helios 44M-4 means 44th project, M42 mount, 4th generation. Some people say that the higher the last index number, the better the resolution, but a lot of people have tested all the models and they don't seem to be much different in terms of resolution. The only thing that may be a pattern is that versions 2/3/4 were included with consumer cameras and 6/7 were put on more modern luxury camera models so they have gone through more rigorous quality control.
I have the 44-m4 and it's nice
AYE! I have that lens! But not the rehoused version. I have a version from IronGlass Adapters that were modded to give an "anamorphic" look (oval amber colored acrylic cut and fishline in the lens for the flare). It's a really fun lens. I have the 37, 58, 85, and 135. I also didn't know they covered full frame so that's cool too! Thanks for sharing and have a good day. Stay safe.
nice to see rehousings for the Helios lineup. I own the 44-2 and 44m and i loved them initially as taking lenses for my anamorphic adapters, but the swirly bokeh became a bit too much. i found the background too distracting over time. but for certain shots/scenarios, they're great, especially for the price.
A lot of stills photographers would gladly pay for an Iron Glass rehoused Helios lens. I am quite sure that Iron Glass buy in bulk Helios lenses from the original KMZ factory and pick out say, the best 10% of the glass elements for rehousing. That deeply recessed built in lens hood is essential for flare control for this lens, and I am quite sure the re-machined optical block is internally blacked up to perfection. I know enough about machining to say the reworking of the aperture and focus rings makes this lens a keeper.
Bought one yesterday on ebay and I wasn’t really sure what to think about it... now im really excited 😂😂
4:46... looks like a retro piece -'Fargo' , etc... Impressive!!!
It's funny how people like these lenses, I had two Helios lenses from my father (I still must have them somewhere), I always considered them to be quite bad :D I once had a Zeiss Flektogon 35mm 2.4 and it seemed to be noticeably better.
I do owe Flektogon. It is an amazing lens.
duuuuuuude thank you. been looking for good content on these lenses. I'm like an inch close to buying the set
Happy you uploaded this. I have been following this lense for a while!
I love the Helios 4:39
Nice! I’ve been using quite a lot the Helios 40-2 85/1.5, and it’s awesome! And that 55/1.2 looks very interesting, let me try to find it! Cheers from Japan!
That 85/1.5 is especially amazing when you mount it on a medium format camera cause the image circle is much bigger than full frame!
Mine just shipped! Been waiting since June! Got the 4 lens set so excited!
Do you still own this lens ?
And yes how do you like it today, 2 years later ?
Or why did you sold it ?
I just wish there was a couple other focal lengths, curious as to how you’d mix different lenses if another focal length is needed for a project given how diff this bokeh looks.
You can have a full set from 20 to 135 and they match surprisingly well!
@@alanbesedin oh sweet! I didn’t realize that.
Any clue if these can be purchased individually? Only online pricing is 22k for a set
$1000 for a rehousing on a $50 lens? Not sure about that one.
Rehousing service alone without a lens at all goes for way over $1K
@@CGP_Films92 I looked into getting my Leica R’s rehoused and it would cost over $6K each, not including the cost of the lens itself. If you think $950 is too much, than you’re probably not the pro / enthusiast market something like this is aimed at. I’m blown away by how affordable this rehoused vintage cine lens is, there’s nothing like it at this price anywhere
agreed.. i'll pay $50 instead thq
What dictates the value is going to be the demand for the look. Super speeds weren’t that crazy expensive until Bradford Young used them on Arrival, now they cost unholy amounts.
I will buy the vintage!
Just bought a 44-2 from ebay for 75 €
With ef mount & gears attached 👌🏻
Michelob ultra my favorite especially the infusion flavor
Thanks for the video! Which camera did you use for the test? You are talking about the canon, then showed a Sony... Maybe I’ve got mixed up. Really like the rendered images! Placed an order for an entire set a few dates ago. Happy new year!!
Just got my answer. Lol At 10’; Sony A7SIII. Thanks 😊
shhh, Ironglass is working on FD re-housings, DON'T THINK they'll be $4k to do it either, so hold onto your 55 mate, it could be re-housed YET ;) Great video dude, glad to see you got your hands on one!
I want this so badddd. Give me the fdsss
Whitepoint optics do a beautiful Canon FD rehousing.
Love your channel. Thanks for all the effort your put in to get us this info
Whats the difference between the rehoused helios vs the cine mod? Theres a 200 difference so I'm curious if its worth the price difference
its just going to be a lot more professional from a build stand point. long smooth focus throw, so it will be nicer with electronic focus systems and will probably hold up a lot longer too.
the newly housed lens looks good but the rehousing cost is crazy!!!
Greg Fraiser used these in Dune Part 2!!
Love it.
Thanks man
How do you achive this blueish color? Like an overcast day of Jeff Cronenweth
Hello good morning, I wanted to ask you why I have the same goal with the anamorphic modification 😁 but there is a doubt that eats me up inside, I record with a Sony a7III in 1080 and 4K but when creating the sequence I don't know what resolution to put, I don't know if I have to leave it normal or put an anamorphic resolution, could you explain it to me please
Does the FDs work on your pocket 6k? I thought the flange distance is weird so it doesn't focus?
Hey, if this is fine moded would the aperture ring always be declicked? I just bought one and the f stop still clicks
It's called 44-2 just because. USSR lenses used to have numbers for each model, like Jupiter 9, which is not 9 mm, Jupiter 37A, which has nothing to do with 37 or A. Just numbers.
nice b-roll
Asking $1,000 for a retro-fit Helios 44-2 is absurd.
44 is the diameter of the lens housing- which I discovered from trying to find the right gear size to put on it and the 2 must be the F-stop at its widest. So.... 44-2.
That's just a guess but I see no reason why it wouldn't be so.
How's the focus breathing?
I would love to grab one but man the wait time is unbearable :(
do a comparison of helios by it self and the modded rehoused one. :D
Oh wrong video I’m watching your latest video on my tv and this one on my phone lol
I rather just put a big thick follow focus gear ring on it, and save the money. :)
Bruh... You missing the point of a rehousing.
Requesting render settings ):
go to ebay and get the anamorphic mod for 200$ with ef
$1000 worth it?
Nope
@@xtiandank thx, im goin get 70-200 and 24-70
Thumbs up from me 👍❤🎬
I’m really surprised this was your experience with this lens, my copy of it is completely unusable under f/2.8 It goes extremely soft and magenta.
it was the most mass-produced lenses in the world, so a lot of them will be in less than perfect condition, get another one. I've owned 20+ 44-2 lenses and I can tell you for sure that they can be surprisingly sharp wide open.
I promise I will not sleep on that vintage cinema lens. That would be very uncomfortable.
1000$ LOL.
its pretty good considering canon 50mm cine is 2500
@@gwm-btdbattlesagar.ioandmo9988 did you also consider that the original is 25$?
@@johngeorgo I mean yes but if you take machine costs and materials then it would easily cost a lot. Not a bad deal.
Its not much at all. I think it is fair price.
Anyone who thinks an upcharge of $950+ dollars is fine is almost certainly spending too much on their gear.
1000$!!!.....amazon 80$.
Hey man, great video but do look up the correct pronunciation of "Bokeh" 😊 or better yet, ask a Japanese person. Cheers!
This is the new fashion lens everyone will buy and everybody will have the same picture style again like we see now with the diffusion filters. The new film maker miracle ✌️🤩😄. This is an old style budget lens but please don't call it "cine". There is nothing to compare with a cine lens
First!
I second that
more footage, less gabbing plz
