that microtonal notation tho
:o
right? it’s amazing
Yeah it's wild isn't it
I feel like you should make a video on just how good of an ear you have to have to transcribe Collier. I've played for 25 years, and I have a good ear, but June Lee is... streets ahead.
EDIT: I should be clear. When I say "I feel like you should make a video about...", I swear I didn't mean to sound as entitled as I did. But get on it though.
What a brilliant way to do it. Thank you June and Jacob.
I dont know whats more amazing, the fact that Jacob can include so man pitch shifts or the fact you can actually notice, insane!
Its good to see Old style of Jacob and June lee
it’s so rare yet oddly unsurprising in this circumstance to see “A=440” at the start of the song
everybody gangsta until the transcription notates "A = 440 Hz" at the start of the song
Like finding health packs, ammo, and a save point before a boss battle. You know shit's about to get real.
@@OrdinaryLatvian Facts
You know it’s gonna be a ride when it starts with specifying A=440
😂😂😂 so true lmao
me when microtonal shifts: ö
The irony of the lyric of "I'm offering this simple phrase" taking 15 seconds
Jacob actually talked about that concept in a masterclass posted on RUclips. Basically his point was to choose specific places to musically represent the opposite of what is being sung. It’s a very interesting concept and it’s cool that you saw that because I didn’t notice!
Anything but
What’s actually happening in bar 30 with the purple notes there?
@@thelolman2000 Djesse's motif. Jacob's signature--sometimes sneaked in--motif since his album Djesse 1.
@@jaredpeterson3447 I’ve been calling that “reverse text painting.” There’s probably a better name for it somewhere out there…
June Lee and Jacob Collier, a match made in heaven.
Are we shipping it?
Make it a polyamorous ship, including Jason Fieler.
@@megatronsroyalemissary382 aahha. I'm not shiping them, it's platonic. I don't like shipping real people, it's kinda disrespectful.
I hope Jacob collabs with Bill Wurtz someday
@@parthajeetsarmah4529 *h o l y g o d y e s*
June Lee could be making literally all of the microtones up and my ear would not know. I'm just gonna trust him on this one
Nat King Cole: "And so I'm offering this simple phrase..."
Jacob Collier: "Nah fam"
You win
LOL... as we often have to say to the plebs, IT'S NOT A COMPETITION. :) Music isn't, and neither is music nerding (transcriptions). And frankly, I like the way you explicitly notated a lot of the microtonal stuff with things like "Split major 3rd into 5 notes", where June just implies it. When it comes to Jacob, you can never have too many transcriptions IMO.
@@GHRiz i completely agree, I was just being dramatic lol
HAHAH
anyone who can produce an accurate transcription of jacob's stuff at all, let alone in this amount of time (and at such a young age as you!!), is a winner. i'm blown away by both of you, amazing skills
Kudos to both of you 🏆
June Lee is baaaaccckkk. We missed you!
The Merry Christmas part starting at 3:40 is like the most magical thing, when it ends and “to youuuu” my entire body explodes
That’s such a beautiful chord at the end
The microtonality plays a huge role in that feeling
this part and especially the part after it makes me want to cry everytime I listen to it, unbelievably beautiful
You notate these arrangements faster than i can figure out what keys they’re in
It looks like you're even discovering easier ways to print such complicated music (re 1: vocally produced "bell" effects and 2: microtonality) than you did just a few months ago. Remarkable. Notating this in a more conventional way is hard enough as it is, but I suppose would look messier on the sheet music you notate. Bravo, Maestro Lee, you never cease to amaze. But then again, neither does Jacob Collier.
Yes, the notation on these is spectacular!
outstanding. really interesting to see the differences between this and the transcription by Jason Fieler from the same piece of music. Distinct notation styles particularly in the ending
jason fieler's transcriptions are just random guessed notes though
@@kevinrichardson2660 interesting take
@@kevinrichardson2660 isn't that....what a transcription is (edit: can't spell apparently)
@@jasonfieler it is interesting indeed
@@jasonfieler there's nothing interesting about wrong transcriptions, you got the priorities wrong mate
Wow, he is so much more restrained now. I still enjoyed this but I find his stuff now to be much more relaxing like a brain massage
I'd say he's relaxed rather than restrained. Restrained implies he's holding back, instead I think he's making work more true to himself now.
Damn that was fast
Check out Jason Fieler on yt he beat June to the punch this time
@@cascade9584 its actually insane how fast the are
He is a beast
@@cascade9584 but jason fielers is far less accurate
Jacob doesn't sing out of tune, the foundations of our tuning system is.
Truly
I cannot believe that I didn't notice all of those key changes or tuning shifts while listening to the song. Jacob is incredible.
I just realized something. When Jacob talked about splitting a minor third into four parts, he did it with rudolph the red-nosed reindeer. Now, when he finally brings it back, it's for a Christmas song.
he also did this in Moon River
2:50 3rd melodica note is C sharp not C natural
i just can't trust anyone anymore :(
jk ur so killing june, this is so thorough and sick, merry christmas man
My favorite tempo: Hungry for Presents
As someone who wants to go into musical composing, I don't even think there will ever be a time when I can write something like this. This is the coolest thing I have ever seen.
The level of detail in this blows my mind
*Jacob Collier:* releases masterpiece modulating 9 times, not counting modulations in base pitch...
*June Lee:* _Hold my eggnog!_
I. get. chills. every. time!
Jacob's music seems to defy notation and yet you can freakin bend it to your will, ABSOLUTELY amazing. As a visual learner I THANK YOU
Absolutely breathtaking. To hear Jacob alone is mind blowing, but for you, June, to take the time and trouble to transcribe it and to see it written down is also quite something else. Warmest thanks.🌞🙏🇬🇧🌞
Everyone's a gangster until there's 5 staff for 1 player.
2:07 sneaky sneaky Djesse theme
I get it. "Allfather" June Lee now exists to "check" his successor's work (even if he didn't mean to, I'm sure). We stan when only he detects microtonal adjustments of A SINGLE NOTE buried within a chunky chord.
Wonderful! June Lee has to keep going doing this so us mere mortals can appreciate everything in those tunes
Jazz musicians: how about a nice series of modulations in keys?
Jacob Collier: How about modulations of tonality itself?
June, your transcriptions are as inspirational as Jacob's spectacular creations. Thank you so much for sharing.
5:27 made me believe in Santa again.😳
Same. He is that magical
this was awesome! the bass in it blew me away..actually it all blew me away..
Your ear is ridiculous, June. Never ceases to blow my mind.
I've never clicked so fast, this is awesome! It's really nice to have the cents written down
What a wonderful tempo marking!
Wow!! Simply wow. What a piece, what an arrangement and -- what an incredible transcription work!!!
The king returns
yep, that made me cry....
I love how you include the cent changes and exact hertz he’s singing in. Such an amazingly done transcription!
Fantastic arrangement, fantastic execution, and a fantastic transcription! Love you both! ♥️
I knew June lee was gonna come clutch with the transcription
I like what you did to the motif
He returns at the perfect time.
This is amazing. Did you receive/use the logic sessions from Jacob? How did you manage to figure out the micro-tonalities in de chords, at the end for instance?
The same question here!!!
My question as well
im not really sure but at the top of the music at the beginning it says approved by jc lol
Some of the micro-tonalities, especially at the end, are standard just tunings. They're tuned to the harmonic series instead of 12 TET. Jacob does this all the time, and a well trained ear can distinguish between just intonation and equal temperament.
@@mikehughesmusic4921 In that case the transcript had to be full of cent notations as Jacob usually uses just intonation in his vocal arrangements. It‘s only the Melodica that should have equal temperament.
Damn another challenger is approaching Jason with another version
Is there a third? I know June Lee was the OG, but Jason quickly came in second. Are there more transcribers out there?
You both are gifts from God omg
HES BACK! POGGERS
The sustained F# at the end really speaks to me about how much he loves this song...I get moon river vibes from it.
I was missing these
Fantastic! Thank you.
Dude this is incredible work - the speed you work at is terrifying. It's really interesting you hear the section from fig. H in a de-tuned B major, in context I hear that in a super-bright Bb major. Did you talk to JC about this?
It’s cool to hear people’s’ splits on this: I always hear it as more B-like than B-flat like
Thank you so much for your work!
How can you transcribe this? That’s insane talent 😱👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
the complex nuances are unspeakably heartfelt, appealing not only to the senses, but evoking a pleasure not physical, but ethereal. Sounds Give rise to spirit flight upon the updrafts of Gratitude and the pure current of Light and Love.
I could hear distinctly the pitch variations...
Pure Genius Jacob College
So good to see you back transcribing again :)
Man, Jacob is amazing... but you are certainly a blast man. Wonderful job!
I like the cent deviation notation better than interval splitting, and the engraving here is also very nice. And the choice to notate 4:16 as B major instead of Bb major also makes sense to my biased ear for sure (I hear it as much more B-like than B-flat like). I wonder, would anyone be interested in transcriptions of these but with diatonic quarter flat key signatures? The B half-flat major key signature, for example, uses Bd, Ed, Fǂ, Cǂ, Gǂ, Dǂ, and Aǂ. Probably those key signatures heighten the novelty although it can be limiting to readability.
at first i heard it more like Bb, but i agree when measure 66 hits it definitely feels more like B. i don't have perfect pitch tho. just going by feel :)
JUNE... your ear is f*cking amazing to catch all this details! Don't get me on the genius of Jacob too.... but JUNE... Best transcriptor in the world.!
For the notation on the +16.7c, Just intonation suggest that -31c is the just tuned dominant 7th, and if it is tuned to the D-flat which is already -16.7c, it should technically be -47.7c
Fabulous.
Holy crap! I was hoping this transcription was coming.
somehow your ability to accurately transcribe this is even more impressive than Jacob doing it in the first place.
Incredible work June!
Grazie.
i was waiting for this, since the day song came out spotify! chestnuts need a lot of modulationary fire to roast
Wow.. wow.
daaaam you're picking out every pitch/cent.. and what's with that face at 2:06 after "phrase"? I don't get it
Djesse motif man:)

Already???? This is awesome tho I love these transcriptions, and it’s insane that u can do them so well

Great transcription June, well done 👏👏👏

So amazing 😍👏👏

absolutely stunning as per usual, thank you for this june.
Yes please!
June Lee you are amazing. Respect
This version is the only Christmas carol I'm ok with hearing not during Christmas time.
And my wish came true 💖
HE’S BACK
June Lee, you are a genius!
Dang this came out fast. Glad to see it
Incredible
what is this sorcery
That's a feat of transcription and a lot of work. Congratulations June. Make a video of this process?
I’m bringing this to my school’s choir teacher on April 1st just to spite them
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Love it!
어떻게 이런 곡을 카피하실수 있는건가요??ㅠㅜ너무 대단하십니다 !!!!
June lee back in the game
2:07 THE DJESSE LICK AND THE LENNY FACE
I see A440 in the start, I expect some kind of masterful microtonal deviation. And boy did I get it.
He's alive!
June, you’re a boss. Thank you ❤️
Really great to see him come back to his original setup after all this time. It feels like he can now use all the crazy techniques before in a perfectly delicate and natural way. Also he’s gotten considerably better at singing. In a lot of his earlier stuff, I found his solo vocals themselves a little unimpressive, but here, his phrasing is absolutely beautiful
5:30 gosh that chord is pure resonance, and 5:38 is even better
0:42 this song is certified christmas :))))
This is like how I imagine Christmas music is for the Hårga from Midsommar.
