Duane Carter was in this race... Did his son get his nickname from your dad? Always thought that was a unique nickname!

This is a nice document of Indy 1949. It's a shame that the great Indianapolis favorite for many years passed away before this evnt: Ted Horn. Horn had a fanamibal record at the famed I.M.S. track...seem like he would have finally made "Victory Lane" in the many years he raced there. His tragic untimely death in October, 1948 at the DuQuion dirt mile track took the racing world into another loss.
Obvious one thing for sure in all the old time auto racing films that fans should admire is how daring these guys were with little if any body protection on them. Thank God, that in time ( the 1950's) the need for track safety and driver safety came into play.

Thanks! Love the old home movies. @13:57 was looking for clues about the signal to start engines. Was it an ariel bomb, raised flag, spoken command? Unfortunately, the footage does not appear to provide any clues.

It was the same command that's given today. Wilbur Shaw, then the man in charge of things at IMS, is reputed to have been the first to give the command beginning in 1946, though that's been disputed (he did give that command in 1953-'54), and when he died in a plane crash four months after the 1954 race. Tony Hulman took over the duties of giving the command to fire engines at Indy, beginning with the 1955 race. However, it's believed that long-time flagman Seth Klein or PA announcer John Francis "Irish" Horan gave the command in from 1948-'52.

Where is the rest of it? Kind of an abrupt end.

Where's the finish? Kinda pointless to post if you don't have the checkered flag.

Overalls were boiled in a Boric acid bath..
      Cars had high head rests.
      Room under the dash
And you WANTED to get thrown out!
      Fire!
No seat belt wanted or needed!
SAME as Dan Gurney's magnesium AAR Eagle Weslake F-1 car of 1967...

Only 2min of an 18min footage reel are actually of the race. Most of these old films seem to be this way. The people recording these seem more interested in the atmosphere of the event, instead of the action itself. I wonder what cultural differences lead to this.
