    Great review! I think I'll wait for the other models. I think the lack of opening options would bother me on this version.

      If you add a thumbstud to this it won't work due to the type of locking mechanism

    I wanted this knife so bad, until I found out about the button open.
    If Civivi ever makes a flipper version with a button lock, I'll be all over it.

    I agree a million percent. As is I really like this knife BUT I would have really LOVED it if it was a regular deploying knife. Plus now I gotta worry about the legality of it too.

    I have a feeling it was just EASIER to make the button a LOCK, rather than having to tune a detent/release ramp(?) on the button. But, like you said, they apparently figured it out quickly enough to release other knives with flipper/thumb deployment. So, maybe it was just laziness....

    • @knifeinfluenza
      @knifeinfluenza 3 года назад

      That's what I thought, too. You can find button locks on cheap automatic knives, because it's so easy to lock a knive closed with the button. But the real challenge for a designer of a button lock is to set up a good detent, not too weak and not too strong. And I think Civivi just skipped that part and threw the knife in the market as fast as possible.

    • @MrHayes-cb7hp
      @MrHayes-cb7hp 3 года назад

      I think it doesn’t matter to Civivi. Their strategy is clearly to flood the market and increase their share. It’s actually getting stupid. So many are just a tiny bit different than the last and I can say the consistency in quality is dropping. This and the Elementum fixed are my last 2 Civivi purchases unless they do something really different.

    • @knifeinfluenza
      @knifeinfluenza 3 года назад

      @@MrHayes-cb7hp We can see here a bad excample "Hotelling's Law". A company moves towards the average customer to gain as much market share as possible. But in the end all products look the same and boring. This can be stopped by the competitors and customers by moving towards more extraordinary products.

  • @js2810

    For sure,it is a beautiful knife; however, I would not want to get caught carrying it. Where I live (not a lawyer either) I believe it could get me in trouble because of the way it flips open without a detent creating a bias toward closure. Perhaps Civivi needs to offer it in two versions one being a full-auto with the button lock and the other version with the flipper tab ect in a more normal configuraton. If they did this, one could purchase the version that fits the regulations where the live.

    Dude all you have to do is use it for a couple days to learn the ergonomics of it, and when you do it's fun af, for real. It's literally no different then an everyday pocket knife, I've decided to wait on getting a gravity knife because this is no different. IDK I didn't get that impression from it, I bet it would be one of you favorite knives once you learn it😁🤙but that's just me I guess lol

    I don't think they are going to make anymore of the red and black carbon fiber. I think it was limited edition for the first run. They released a plain carbon fiber without any of the red or blue coloring.

  • @Cry42
    @Cry42 3 года назад

    I think the difference is basically the equivalent of a detent ramp for the button. Haven't seen the internals on this one to be sure, but it's present on knives that do use other deployment methods.

  • @hcookaustin
    @hcookaustin 3 года назад +3

    While everybody is busy complaining about the lack of alternative deployment methods, these gizmos just keep flying off the shelf. If buzz equals sales, they hit a home run on this thing. I still don’t have one despite several attempts. I may very well join everybody in the complaint caucus immediately after I can actually get one in my hand. And by then I will have already given up my money so exactly who is the smart one in this situation? The jury is out but as a marketing lesson, it’s been hilarious to watch this unfold. So to speak.

  • @kingfish4488

    Not sure why all the youtubers push Civivi I just returned the civivi elementum button lock. Its sharp as hell but the build quality is flimsy. The micarta scales were so thin if you tightened the 2 rear screws too much it would warp the scale off of the liner. Take a very close look at the button lock where it contacts the rear tang of the blade. The plunger is milled down less than a 1/16 inch this will fail before a liner lock would. Civivi knives are all show and no go. If you want a nice Chinese knife at a cheap price Petrified Fish is a better deal. Civivi - WE knives are over priced.

    I like it so much better without the lanyard hole. I wonder if would be possible to convert it to an auto with a coil spring. No thumb studs or flipper tab makes me think that may be the case. Have you taken it apart?

  • @OGBladeReviews
    @OGBladeReviews 3 года назад

    Well, it's "safe" in the closed position, anyway... LOL! Becons the addition of a spring, as it would make a fine auto. 😁👍🗡️

  • @Timmayytoo
    @Timmayytoo 3 года назад +1

    I realize it's subjective so this is not meant as a criticism of you, Brian, but I really don't understand why people are upset about the button only design. You are not the only person to voice the complaint, but no one has ever expressed their issues in a way that makes me say "Oh, I see your point". All I've seen is variations of "I don't like it for reasons". I gotta be honest - to me, someone who's only really been heavy into this hobby the last 10 months - what I hear as the subtext to these complaints is "It's different and I don't like change".
    Look, people not liking it has zero impact on me, but I just wish someone could give one good reason why the button-only design is flawed. Having said all that, you make an excellent point that CIVIVI has other button locks coming that have multiple opening mechanisms, so it's within the realm of possibility that they rework this knife to add a thumbstud - which would be fine with me.

    • @SliceyDicey
      @SliceyDicey  3 года назад +1

      I think I clearly said my issues very specifically. Probably illegal some places and easiest way to open it is with a big THWACK that I'd rather not do with a lot of non knife people around.
