In this video you'll learn how to make northern Thai jackfruit curry with pork ribs and tomatoes and lots of healthy greens.
Have you ever cooked with young jackfruit (or green jackfruit)? It's a vegetable you can probably find at your Asian grocery store, and in Northern Thailand it is used in this healthy curry with pork ribs and tomatoes. It's a water-based curry so there's no coconut milk, making it a light curry, much like a soup. The curry paste is the easiest paste you could possibly make. It's also naturally gluten-free, and if you don't eat pork, try it with chicken wings!
The curry uses wild betel leaves and climbing wattle (cha-om) as the greens, but if you can't find it, check out the blog post for more about substitutions. hot-thai-kitchen.com/northern...

We also eat pork with young jack fruit curry in Myanmar too. I guess you don’t really need to cut jackfruit into small pieces. As it becomes tender after cooking and jackfruit soaks up the soup which makes it delicious.. But we dear curry paste and pork first then add jackfruit and make stew kind of soup

In the Philippines, we cook young jackfruit (langka) with coconut cream (gata) and shrimps and the recipe is called Guinataang Langka and it's best if it's a bit spicy so we use green chillis (not so spicy) and bird's eye chillis (the spicy ones) 😊💕 We always have it with steaming hot rice because rice is life, we're Asian! 😂

I loved the South Indian verion of this Curry and now, I really want to try your Thai version of the same. I will make your Thai version and then, return to this page with a contras and comparison of the two versions... in fact, I will purchase the South Indian version to compare side by side with your Thai version and report my impressions. I expect your Thai Jackfruit Curry will be different... maybe, but Jackfruit Curry vs. Jackfruit Curry... it should be intersting,. I Love your Cooking Channel...

In Hong Kong that type of "tong-ho" is called "皇帝菜", literally "emperor greens". By "tong-ho" we mean something that is from the same family but has less wavy edges and a stronger flavour. Both kinds are winter veggies and can be a bit more difficult to find in summer, so how about replacing them with Chinese celery, which I think has a quite similar fragrance?

Love jackfruit curry. We eat it all the time in Chiang Rai. It is not normally so red as yours, more grey tinted like the shrimp paste. It is also not heavily chili spiced. No dried chilis at all but maybe a few fresh bird chilis in the broth. Think pork broth with garlic, shrimp paste and fish sauce.
We don't cook it that long so it stays in big chunks that we can pick up with the sticky rice. Sawtooth coriander is a common green.
The falangs in Canada do not want to play with Palao. It stinks like last years sweat socks if you can find it at all. Save it for som tam Issan.

Just an FYI, the betel leaves used here are wild betel leaves, which is a total different species, but in the same PIperaceae family. Totally different flavour profile, betel leaves taste much stronger than wild betel leaves.

It is not actually from a chrysanthemum plant, don’t know why it’s called that. The correct name should be Tong Ho. We usually put it in hot pot.

P YW is correct. It is not the same as ornamental chrysanthemums, most of which originated from East Asia. Edible chrysanthemum is a type of daisy native to the Mediterranean. 🙂
