- Join me on a stunning walk along the Rail Trail, a popular route that takes you through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the North York Moors National Park. In this video, I explore the section of the trail that runs between the picturesque village of Goathland and the historic town of Grosmont, both of which are stops on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Starting in Goathland, made famous as the filming location for Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter movies, I follow the Rail Trail as it winds its way through beautiful woodland and open moorland, offering stunning views of the North York Moors at every turn. We'll see old railway bridges and the beautiful Beck Hole village before arriving in the historic town of Grosmont.
As we walk, we'll learn about the history of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the role it has played in the region's transportation and tourism for over a century. We'll also discover the unique geology that has shaped the landscapes we see today.
This video is perfect for those who love walking, nature, and history. Whether you're planning a visit to the North York Moors or simply want to experience the beauty of the area from home, this video will take you on a journey through some of England's most beautiful countryside. Thank you, Andrew! Nice video!
Cheers James!
PLEASE make a phone call to the NYMR maybe this great video may allow you to video onboard a steam train grossmont to goathland as they say first class
I've already filmed a footplate ride from Pickering to Grosmont - I just haven't had the opportunity to edit it yet, so that's coming soon 🙂
@@NorthYorkshireWanderer brilliant
Class 37 up the hill, nice. Great video thanks 👍
Andrew I just love watching your vlogs they are so natural & informative & relaxed encouraging me to discover your wonderful land 👍Tip Top Andrew don't stop your excellent work 👏
Cheers Christopher! 👍
Fab video. Many thanks. …..
Another really interesting piece of work. Your love of the area shines through.
Great 👍video 👏Great place to visit
I used to stay in a B&B in Goathland just opposite the station, next to the road bridge... until it changed hands and became a railway-themed B&B, just before Heartbeat started to become popular bringing in the crowds of tourists.
Then moved to staying in Pickering thereafter...
Great work Andrew, thanks for this fabulous insight. Wonderful drone use and the music is great too. I feel so lucky to live very close to the NYM National park, its breathtaking. You really do the area proud. Superb work Sir. You have another subscriber.
Thanks a lot, Jeff! It's an amazing area!
@@NorthYorkshireWanderer I feel blessed to live where I do.
Makes me want to do the Rail Trail..... thank-you for yet another inspiring clip! How beautiful is Yorkshire!!!
Very. I feel blessed to live here.
We are so lucky Joyce you are 100% correct.
Perfect companion to my morning coffee.
It's a lovely walk we've done lots of times, like you, we sometimes get the train back 🚂 Great video Thanks
Another great video. Love Goathland and the NYMR but I have never walked the rail trail. Would have loved to hear your class 37 return train working hard up the hill into Goathland.
Another enjoyable outing with you - thank you very much
Really enjoyed your latest Video 👍👍
Fantastic video my friend
another great video Andrew
Another top video ,always like the stories of the places you visit
Cheers Matthew!
Thanks for another lovely trip so interesting and informative
That was fascinating. Looks like a nice day out... Also..
That drone work is just cherry on top. Nice.
👍
So quiet peaceful and superb scenery my disused view are less pretty London Docklands..
Another great vlog Andrew , yet another reason for me to return to this area and visit all the things I didn't know about when I first visited . Being a southerner is great that you can get fantastic detail like this to make your visit to an area much more enjoyable . Might wait until the spring now .
Cheers Lewis.
Eeee, that were grand, lad!
Not taking the piss, Andrew, but you pull at my heartstrings... I'm an Oz, born and raised but I share your heritage and physically we could be cousins!
Splendid footage and editing, as ever.
My wife and I can't wait to copy this walk. May Beeching turn in his grave. 😘
Pass on my regards to the miserable neighbour at Goathland who dislikes people.
Fantastic. I am booked into a campsite at Pickering next year so I shall walk the Rail Trail.
Excellent work on one of the best attractions in this area - thanks for posting .
Cheers William!
Great presentation as always thank you for your work
Another good video, great scenes and very informative. Personally enjoy visiting these areas as often as I can. Thanks for posting and can’t wait for the next one
Very enjoyable video. One of our own favourite walks. 👏👏👍😀
As for the heritage diesel, it’s an iconic powerhorse, so don’t be disappointed. 😀
Thanks Andrew. Haha Yes! I was more disappointed that it didn't match what I'd said in the morning about getting a steam train back to be honest. I quite like the Class 37's.
Fantastic 👍. Thank you.
Great Video and thanks for sharing it. Me and my wife often visit and stay in Goathland staying at Glendale house B&B. We have walked the Rail Trail as you did and got the train back. We love that area and thank you for explaining the history of it too. I knew a bit about it but your detailed dialogue makes it that bit better. I will be watching your other videos with interest. I recommend the Pullman Diner on the NYMR as a great experience too.
Thanks Philip. Yes, a Sunday roast on there is on my to-do list when I get a spare weekend!
Yet another great informative well produced video , thank you Andrew. Although ive walked it many times enjoying all the sights, sounds and smells (wild Garlic when out) this is great to watch
Cheers, Alan
Cheers Alan!
Top draw as usual. Well done Andrew 👍
Thank you!
The hamlet of Esk Valley didn't have road access until quite recently. They relied on the short railway to Grosmont which formed the end of your walk. It's a pity you didn't show the narrow horse tunnel which runs parallel with the double bore steam railway tunnel at Grosmont. A beautiful bit of England to be sure.
I covered the smaller tunnel in a bit of detail in my previous video - ruclips.net/video/d91HmkU8P4Y/видео.html
Loved this walk. Brings back so many memories ( as do a lot of your walks) and so good to watch on this snowy Sunday afternoon. Looking forward to your next and thank you. 👏👏
It's a good walk from Goathland to Grosmont. I've done it a couple of times, in pre-Heartbeat days when it was possible to park in Goathland without having to pay for the privilege. Interesting to see the remnants of the original railway route.
You can park at the other end up at Mallyan Spout for free
@@stillages1 Last time I drove through Goathland a few weeks ago, there were cars parked on both sides of the road from the mini roundabout by the Mallyan Spout hotel half way to the bridge over the beck on the road to Egton Bridge.
It looks like you got a nice day.
It is surprising just how much industrial activity their was on the Moors and NE coast, Alum was a big industry in Sandsend I cant remember the location right now but one of the coastal village’s has cart tracks carved into the bedrock on the seashore they loaded ships with cargo when the tide was out and sailed off when it came back in. (Possibly Runswick bay)
Yes, I saw a photo on Facebook recently of those but I also can't remember which village it was. All fascinating stuff!
@@NorthYorkshireWanderer my father showed me them as a kid and I have seen them s an adult and im 90% its Runswick bay on the right hand side of the beach. Very cool to think f the work that went into carving them and who came up with the idea!. Great Video BTW.
I Love the rail trail! What a treat to get the class 37 thrash up the bank too. 😁
Glad to see you back with another excellent video
This brings back many memories of a few days I spent in the area with my campervan in 2003. I walked the rail trail too! BTW the class 37 diesel locomotive that hauled your train is regarded as a "classic" by rail enthusiasts since it's 50+ years old so not much younger than the 1950s built steam locomotives used on the NYMR.
My Grandma lived near Pickering at a place called Elron Lodge, when I stayed as a kid in the summers you’d hear the railway and see the steam.
Yet another great video Andrew this & the Scarborough videos are top drawer.Thank you for your hard work.
Cheers Carl!
Really enjoy your videos Andrew, I used to visit Whitby so much in the 1980's and 1990's and as I now live in Canada I love the reminders of the many locations I used to take my kids while we used to stay in the area.
Very happy days that I miss so much so thank you and please keep up the good work in reminding me of all my 'happy places'.
some terrific filming, all sorts of aspects, old railway, scenery, info , very interesting
Cheers Lee!
Very enjoyable video. I just love the area and always enjoy visiting the steam railway.
Lovely seeing the trail winding along through woods and the narrow wooden bridges over the beck, so delightfully tranquil. The sight of the steam train as it made its stately progress down the line, just so purely English and the whole video a joy to watch. Thanks for your filming and the interesting narration.
Another great film ! Beautifully shot i definitely need to visit some time looks an amazing area , thank you for all the information.
Cheers Peter!
First train from Pickering and last train to Pickering are usually always diesel as there are less loco servicing facilities so it’s easier to store the loco overnight.
Another great video. Visited Goathland for the first time in September and looking forward to Grosmont as soon as it is warm enough to camp again. Glad that I don't have to travel miles to get to these lovely places.
The Birch Hall Inn with the sweet shop between the two bars - as you say, best pub in the world.
🍻
Andrew you are a STAR !!!! 23mins of Pure Yorkshire. I have just been addicted to your channel for the past 2 yrs. Wishing you every success and looking forward to your next vlog. All the best Robert from Manchester
Thanks Robert!
Goathland has one the very few volunteer fire brigades.
Beck Hole Ironworks were unlucky in having one of its blast furnaces crack open.
Esk Valley village didn't get an all weather road up until the 1960s.
I love Goathland and Grosmont, they are stunning villages
Loved this! I’ll be doing this walk when I’m in Goathland for the Heartbeat Vehicle Rally!
This is also my favourite rail trail. Disappointingly, when I visited in June 2023 they wouldn't sell me a single ticket from Grosmont to Goathland. They even admitted this was 'a popular thing' to get the train out and walk back. I'm visiting again tomorrow for the September annual steam gala - I'll check to see if they've reconsidered and post an update here either way...
My uncle & auntie owned grosmont pets auntie gill she was barmaid in Birch hall inn till she passed in 2004 And my unce ran grosmont pets till 2007 untill he passed away best memories North Yorkshire Moors good times delivering pets foods over north Yorkshire Moors memories.
Thank you very much that was a wonderful trip down memory lane when I was young I lived in Yorkshire and have many visits BECK HOLE , And yes that is a lovely little pub
Excellent video as always Andrew 👏🏻👏🏻
I grew up in that neck of the woods and recall the early days of the NYMR. The walk up from Grosmont to Goathland was a regular treat as a child, and when I was (almost) old enough, my father bought me my first pint in that pub in Beck Hole. The two doors, on one side the pub, on the other the village shop, the counter running from the shop side into the pub side.
My father was a bit of a history buff so I was well versed in the history of the railway and the local industry it served.
Never quite the same after Heartbeat spoilt Goathland, the then village shop opposite the garage, doing a cracking line in ice cream, but that and Harry Potter bring in much needed funds to both the railway and the local shops.
Fond childhood memories of that line and that area.
Excellent vid as ever. Def a walk I shall be doing. And I'll add my voice to the others in saying I think you lucked out getting the Class 37 😀
Mrs B H .. Yet again Fanbloodytastic 👍
☀☀☀☀☀
A great walk, local history, local legend's a train journey bloody good drone work what's not to like Once again top notch young man.
Thanks, as always, Bill! 👍
Like a walk through heaven itself!
Goathland Station. Went there one afternoon a few years after Harry Potter had filmed there. A steam train was about to depart so people had congregated on the bridge to take pictures, the penny hadn't dropped that steam locomotives through out an awful when they set off. Made chuckle when they walked past spluttering away.
Fantastic video, well done. I’ve walked the rail trail from Goathland several times. Always with a pint at the pub in Grosmont before the walk back!
Thanks Matt! Always important to get a pint in! 🍻
Really enjoyed this video thank you. I live in Malton so not far away but out beautiful countryside always takes my breath away and the walk was parts I haven't seen.
Another excellent video reminding me of my visit there in August this year. 🚂🚃🚃🚃
Das war wieder großartig.
Tolle Eindrücke, hat mir gut gefallen Andrew. Danke für das schöne Video 👍❤
Aber..........ich kannte es schon!!
Another great video to inspire my next summer walk well done Andrew👍🏻
Just got in from an evening mountain bike ride .. we rode round the back of Roseberry topping through that farmyard.. never knew he worked there
We have walked this route lots of times, but we never get tired of it. Such a beautiful place. Can't wait to return.
The music and everything was just so well done! Really enjoyed the video!
Get video, another walk for the list, going to be busy next summer.
Another interesting and very well made production.
We have the dvd of The Railway Children 1970.
A great video. We love this walk and have done it several times.
Delightful and most useful as I have been planning to do this walk during the steam gala later this month. Thanks. 👍
Absolutely brilliant! Done a really good job of that. 👌👌
Great Stuff Thoroughly enjoyed.
Never been on this railway & that looks a nice walk, despite no steam the interior of the carriage was lush. 🥰
All of your videos are great, but this one is the best yet. Thank you!
Thank you!
Brilliant Andrew.Done the RT and returned via NYMR numerous times pre CV19.Will be doing it again this summer.Loving your films👍😊
Thank you!
Looking forward to being able to do this again. Well worth the trip from New Zealand. Really enjoying the vids. Thank you Andrew.
Thanks Kat! 🙂
Visited Goathland a while ago (long) with my hubby. Must ask "Are you going to do a Christmas/ New Year special?". Stay Safe and keep em coming!
I’m editing together a Christmas special now. It will be up in the next few days 👍🏼
Just stumbled on your channel Andrew, really enjoyed this video, the drone footage is amazing . Me and my wife love the area, there’s many fantastic walks, so far we’ve never been to Beck hole when the pubs open, we’ll make it one day. I only found out last November the you can purchase a return ticket from Pickering to Whitby for £45, ( you can collect from other stations) then it lasts for 12 months from the day of purchase, you can hop on and off as many time as you want,
this year we’re hoping to walk Goatland to Whitby catching the train back.
Thanks for a lovely video and I’ll work my way through the rest of you channel
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Loved this video! My wife and I spent a week recently, in the Esk Valley cottages. I remember you taking the drone video, as I watched from the front garden!! Best holiday we've had for a while. We left our white 4x4 in the car park, (it's visible in the video) and walked everywhere or went on the train! We did the same walk as you, but in reverse!! I can appreciate why Stephenson built the incline! Great videos, keep them coming.👍
Thanks, I appreciate that! Those cottages are in a great spot. I’d like to get one myself for a few days!
Great as usual, brought back so many memories.
To the left of the garage is the original goathland station, can still see the platform edge
Lovely video and well informative, I've been going to Whitby all mi life and there's loads I dint know cheers. Superb cinematograp[hy too
Thanks Matthew!
There are some North East mine explorers on RUclips.
Another great video! Love Goathland (big Heartbeat fan) & had a few pints in the pub there. Also been on the NYMR a couple of times - superb line....
Cheers Andy! Yes, they’re all decent pubs around there to be fair. 🍻
Hi Andrew I have followed your videos for about 6 months and I must say they are great keep them coming. We are in New Zealand and looking forward to coming to the UK when the boarders open again Cheers Steve.
Thanks Stephen! It’s great to see how far the videos are reaching! 👍🏼
We never get tired of this amazing walk, so much so we are coming back in May so much beautiful scenery and history.
Thank you for making this video 🐱
Cheers! And me too - probably my favourite! I hope you enjoyed your visit 👍🏼
Another great video Andrew and thanks for your time and effort in producing it. I have walked much of the Yorkshire Moors over many years and maybe you could have a look at doing a feature on the Lyke Wake Walk, a 41 mile challenge walk from West to East (or the other way) which should be completed within 24 hours. The two ends are Osmotherly in the west and Ravenscar on the east coast. It crosses the NYMR 2 miles south of Goathland at Eller Beck and follows the trackbed of the old Rosedale mineral railway for part of the way over Farndale Moor. I completed it 3 times many years ago as part of a charity event in aid of battered wives and still vividly remember the journeys especially travelling east when the golf balls of Fylingdales came into view marking the last slog to the finish. On the year we walked east to west some wag amongst the home team organised a disco at an Osmotherly hotel - all we wanted to do was eat, drink and go to bed!
John. I did the walk in Sept / Oct '76 as part of a group of between 20-30 of us (I was18) We all set off at 22.30 (after a few pints at the pub) in the pitch dark, following the old railway track. A grulling walk, where 1 by 1 through sleep deprivation our numbers dropped like flies. When the golf balls came into view on the horizon and for hrs they never seemed to get any bigger. It was soul destroying. After passing them, onto Ravenscar and the finish-16hrs and 42 miles later.Totally cream crackered the bed at YHA Scarbrough was pure heaven. You just brought back some happy teenage memories. Robert from Manchester (now63)
Thanks John! I'd love to do that walk.
Excellent vid as ever. Def a walk I shall be doing. And I'll add my voice to the others in saying I think you lucked out getting the Class 37 😀
Cheers John! Hope you enjoy it!
Thanks for sharing an excellent video. Interesting and informative to watch. Have a nice day bro!
Thanks!
Another great video Andrew thank you 😊
