The Extremely Troubled History of Alan Wake

By 2010, players had their choice of heroes in action-adventure games. From space marines and treasure hunters to assassins and powerful mages, it seemed there were few adventurous professions the medium had yet to explore. But on the heels of creating two projects with a Punisher-like detective turned vigilante at the helm, Remedy Entertainment set about crafting a character whose occupation wasn’t exactly video game-friendly-a novelist.
In writer Alan Wake, the Max Payne studio designed an inventive new protagonist, one whom audiences could more easily relate to. It took a long while for Remedy’s vision to fully form, though, as at the start of its production, Wake had far more in common with the company’s previous leading man. Yet, the iterative process of a lengthy development cycle saw the writer evolve into the dynamic figure many a gamer has come to know and love.
To see their vision through to completion, Remedy’s developers were forced to follow the instructions they set for players in Alan Wake’s nightmarish journey through darkness-follow the light. Still, the path forward proved difficult to navigate as an open-world game took on a linear structure, all while the studio altered its managerial approach more than halfway through production. Out of this rather tumultuous period came an instant cult classic, which fans remain eager to see return in some capacity.
This is the history of Alan Wake.

0:48 "One who players could more easily relate to"
True story, in the literal sense. I had always been fond of writing myself, but for the longest time I kept it to short stories, as I guess I didn't have the confidence to write longer novels and keep a long a focused narrative going. But when a friend back in 2010 lended me this game, I saw narration in videogames performed in an immersive and engrossing way I never had before, and thus, Alan Wake was the final push I needed, to pull myself together, and become a full fledged writer myself.
My first fantasy novel (in a now planned trilogy with the second hitting Danish store shelves next spring), being inspired by the game, in which a young boy acquires the mythical Heart of Light (instead of using a flashlight like Alan), and then has to grow with these powers of light, using them to defeat the approaching forces of darkness, and ultimately the dark lord himself, along with the friends he meets along the way.

When the game came out I got it for the 360 and completely disliked it. To be fair, the forced German Dub was an abomination no one should ever experience. But this wasn't my only complain back then. It was a good decision to play it in it's original language again a few weeks back. Really love the abstract story. From a Gameplay standpoint, it's still not very entertaining. You spend too much time fleeing through some pitch black forests and doing nothing else for about 3 chapters. It got better from there but the troubled creation of this game is always there. Still would love to see a well planned Sequel. But I will dig in into Control first when the next gen update is out. Would like to see that Remedy will ditch the greedy jerks from 505 Games.

Alan Wake was my favorite game for a long time. It's still one of my absolute favorites. It is like a mix of Twin Peaks, Stephen King, and Remedy's own special magic. I wasn't really big on American Nightmare as Alan Wake's combat isn't what kept me coming back to the game. I love the extreme atmosphere, the serene idyllic setting that felt like Washington or Oregon, the story that wasn't just another, "I want revenge on my enemies!" story. The psychological aspects really connected to me as a writer myself.

I remember being amazed at seeing bullet time in Max Payne for the first time. I still have the "Do not...cross a man...with nothing to loose" mouse pad somewhere. I was further amazed when I first witnessed bullet time combined with object and rag doll physics in Max Payne 2. I was excited when I saw those Alan Wake tech demos back then. My memory for some reason remembers that lighthouse scene from the demo trailer as Alan being surrounded by spooky monks but I think they were just entities in raincoats. I was also pleased with Alan Wake when it released. I was likewise engaged by it and had a wow moment when the first episode ended with a Roy Orbison song. I remember jumping at every shadow in the dark wooded levels. I also love the flashlight combat and the light zones of safety. I was disappointed when they departed from the open world formula. I was wanting so much to drive around that Pacific northwest area visiting gas stations and kooky characters. I hope in a sequel that they can finally make it open world. I was also very happy when it finally came to PC where it runs at a smooth 60fps and looks all the more sharper and vivid. I think they should have released it on PC to start with. I don't like when Microsoft or whomever steps in and starts making decisions that step on the toes of past PC fans and customers of the Max Payne series. I haven't finished American Nightmare and though I like the desert setting I don't understand what's going on and it feels too separated from the main game. I still haven't completed Quantum Break either but I don't like how they married the live action videos to an online streaming site. To this day I can't get my game to play those movies so I have to watch them on RUclips which don't always follow what you've been doing in game but it is what it is I suppose. I just hope Remedy doesn't continue doing things like that. I have not played Control though it seems to be another hit by Remedy. Thanks for the video and wonderfully written, researched and narrated game documentaries. I had forgotten about this channel until I recently found a saved video on Operation Flashpoint which is where I was first introduced to you.

I loved every single one of Remedy games, even Quantum Break, yes the gameplay was not that innovative but the story was awesome. I still remember the day I bought Alan Wake it was August and I was just coming off vacation and I bought three games that day, one of them was Fable III and I thought that Alan Wake was going to be blown away by Fable III, oh boy how wrong was I. Alan Wake is still one of my favorite if not my favorite game of all time, everything is perfect in this game the story, the gameplay, the voice acting. Me and my brother play it every summer every year in honor of the great developer Remedy.

Remedy is one of the best of today's video game devs. Control was such a fantastic game, after finish the Alan Wake remaster yesterday on my PS5, I just started my 3rd playthrough of Control. The parallels between the two games is absolutely brilliant.

about alan being perceived as unlikable at 14:49 - it was at some point confirmed that that was on purpose. they wanted to give him depth as a character, make him more human and less perfect, show the contrast between the shining star alan wake and his violent, depressed tendencies he shows behind the scenes.
    great video!

Still kinda insane it took Remedy SEVEN YEARS to create Alan Wake. And this was back on 7th gen. 9 years even between Max Payne 2 on PC and Alan Wake on PC.
Thankfully, their output was better afterwards. Alan Wake got 2 post-game DLC, 1 standalone DLC and Quantum Break arrived ... 4 years after American Nightmare, then Control only 3.5 years later. It's getting better guys.

The thing about the game CONTROL, is that the entire thing is an Alan Wake story... He pretty much says so in some of the files in the main game, as well as the DLC... There is also a recording of Jessie in therapy talking about her favorite poet Thomas Zane even though they insist there is no such person... Alan, in one of the segments, says he had to write and create a character SO powerful and confident, and that that's the only way he can escape the darkness... That stuff blew me away...

What a game; just what a great game. Great story, great characters, unbelievable graphics for a 2010 game, and a very immersive philosophical and literary world full of realistic and fantastic elements that make you question which one is the truth. If you haven't played it, just make yourself a favour and play this masterpiece. #StillWaitingForThatSequel

I think this is one of the best game I've ever played on my x360, I got this game and Forza Motorsport for free when I bought my console. And wow man, the gameplay was kinda like surrealist type horror movie game which is why I was so deeply impressed by it. It even had twilight zone miniseries reference throughout the whole game. Definitely Remedy's best game yet imo, better than control and quantum break or it's because I just love this type of game genre idk.
