  • Testing the idea of camping on remote and quiet piers along the Wild Atlantic Way in winter. In this trip my dog and I go car camping in a Discovery 3. It was too windy for the roof top tent. We explored the Beara Peninsula in West Cork and Kerry, South West Ireland.
    The trip takes place in a stormy November. The Drone was blown away by high winds on multiple occasions due to high winds. At the end of the video we take a look at the strategies that brought it home. An understanding of winds, acceleration zones, Coreolis force that causes a changing of wind direction with altitude and surface friction effects that slow wind towards the surface can be difference between seeing your drone again, or not.

    I guess nothing beats a raging tempest to blow those proverbial cobwebs away? Well done on the drone control too... stunning shots, stunning video, in a dark and stormy land. Thank you once again for sharing. Paul.

    A great example of how much happens when we take the time to notice..such a stunning part of the country and well worth the drive to enjoy natures show! 😊 Really liked your shots and editing from inside while driving, lots of drama to compliment the weather! I experience genuine elation when the drone comes home in calm conditions which is definitely ramped up in gusty weather…adrenaline is a powerful thing! 🤩 Loved the mucky paw show and the antics of your travel partner! Another great trip Robin 😎

      Thank you Miriam, always appreciate your comments. The GoPro 11 got the internal time lapse shots and the night and star lapse shots too. They are great functions because they are processed already rather than thousands of photos to handle later.
      Lizzy took her chance to wander in the mud while I was flying the drone knowing full well I wouldn’t notice. I can see her plodding around in the mud in the footage 🤣
      Cracks me up. She knows the rules but she’s convinced they only apply if I will see. If I won’t then all bets are off. It’s like the question of ‘if a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it, does it make a noise?.
      She’s obviously a profound thinker 😂

    Hi Robin.
    If that dog could talk !! he didn't look impressed at 6.37 when getting his breakfast 😂. Great drone footage in such challenging conditions. It does indeed make you appreciate the comforts of home after spending a night or two in the wind and rain. The Beara looks well in both good weather or bad weather. Thanks for sharing and enjoy the weekend 👍

      Yes. Her face didn’t approve of breakfast. Lizzy doesn’t sleep deeply when we’re out camping. She’s on high alert all night. I think it puts her off her breakfast because she’s never like that at home. Still, great company on the trip.
      On the second night the side awning broke loose and a pole came down and started knocking on the window. It was exactly as if someone was there knocking. Just two or three knocks depending on the gust. The dog didn’t even raise an eyebrow though so I knew it wasn’t a person. If it had been she’d have been growling long before.
      Anyway, she ate it 😂

      Thank you for the feedback. I kept the music dark to match the wintery tone. The Discovery 3 folds flat in the cabin so I obviously didn’t pop the tent 🤣

      You definitely hit the spot with the music!
      Haha! The Howling Moon tents are more robust than one would think ;) but I don't blame you for sleeping in the back of the disco :D also, I probably wouldn't have flown the drone 🙈@@VISTATREKKER

      Yes. Wise. I have one drone battery that never took a charge again. I presume it got drained quicker than the designers thought was reasonably possible. It was not reasonable weather 🤣

    Another great adventure-keep them coming. At the end of February, I went to the Skibbereen area with my rooftop tent and also found a little deserted pier sheltered from the wind. I love this time of year and plan to explore some more at the end of March.

      In a winter high pressure it would be bliss. Low sun and light winds, but we all have our binds and choosing time off for me is random and rarely timed by weather, I wish it was, but as you say I think the merits of this time of year are totally missed by many.
      Not by us though Brian 💪💪
      Enjoy your trips and I appreciate the support.

    You should work for the Irish tourist board 😂, beautiful scenes. 😊

      Thank you Richard, very kind of you. I think we all need to invest in enough gear to slip away for an easy local break now and then rather than saving ourselves for a week a year in the sun almost as if the whole year was lived for that one week of fun. We need to bring the holiday home.
      If it’s cheap and easy it’ll be more regular and maybe of more value in our busy lives. I don’t suppose the Irish tourist board might agree 😂
      They’re probably searching out the big money that flies in and spends all around on fancy hotels and restaurants.

    Great idea and great work. I'm all for what most folk would consider 'off season' exploration. No season is off season, it's just a different adventure. Funny that this video arrives now just as I'm planning a trip to the very same area next month. Currently having fun doing some geolocation work finding out where your overnight stops were. Cheers, Matt.

      @VISTATREKKER  5 месяцев назад

      I agree totally Matt. If the Canadians can make the outdoors all season then we really have no excuses. Sliding around the peninsula on Google maps is a fabulous pass time. The first one is west of Glengarriff. A few options along there. The second is just west of Lauragh. What kind of transport are you planning?

    • @BikeLugger
      @BikeLugger 5 месяцев назад

      Thanks, I'd found the first one, was having a little trouble with the second as hadn't realised you'd retreated so far east from Allihies. Found it now thanks. Leaving the Disco and rooftent at home and using my converted Transit Camper this time. Haven't really used the rooftent properly since we did the alps a couple of years back.
      Some of those roads look tight, but I'm game for an adventure and I spend a lot of time driving tiny roads, usually in work minibusses full of kids. I'm a little more aversed to scratches in my own van, but it's no show pony and scars always tell a tale.

    • @VISTATREKKER
      @VISTATREKKER  5 месяцев назад +1

      Brilliant. To be honest I think a van is the best way to do the wild Atlantic way. Roof top camping is not subtle enough to do in a lay-by. There are hundreds of places you can pull over and just stealth camp. I see people doing it all the time. Episode 12 & 14 of this series might give you some ideas. Plenty places a van can reach around the entry to those two beaches and a bit of insight into local bylaws there too. Enjoy!

      Thanks for the info, I’ll give them a rewatch and this time make notes!
      It’s over 20 years since I’ve been to Ireland and most of that visit was spent wandering around the Wicklow mountains in the rain with a massive pack on my back. Looking forwards to seeing some more of the place.
