I love your ideas, Richard. Exhibition vs garage layout (genius), heritage vs main lines (the contrast of these), slow vs fast lines on the main line - just love it. This layout is going to be one of the very best!
Love your concept for this layout - old and new alongside each other, fast and slow. Variety is truly the spice! If it were my layout I would move those tunnel mouths forward a bit. Nothing destroys the visual illusion of a model quite as much as being able to see a train turning round an unfeasibly (for the real thing) sharp bend just inside a tunnel. If you move the tunnel mouths a bit you can hide the fact that the coaches are at 45 degrees to one another in there!

Looking good mate. 👍 for the tight inside garage mode end try measuring across the 2 ends where the tracks are gonna start curving to see the radius you're going to working with? 👍👍👍👍
Great update Richard. Great progress on the layout. That scene with the 4 locomotives doing a parallel run was fantastic and to see that in model form would be awesome. - Nicholas.

I have the class 92 in the Caledonian sleeper livery and very impressed with it am awaiting my order of the mk5 fort William portion your layout is coming on well 😀
Great work on the mainline elevation and the nice broad curves! Too many modular layouts have curving that is far to sharp and toy like. (I understand many modeller's do have space constraints, but it still remains an issue with me). I have a shelf layout with industrial switching using Kay-Dee couplers and I can operate happily with that for a few hours. My long trains I run on the club layout of which I'm a member.
Interesting with the Super Elevation. When I saw the West Hill things, I had assumed that they would be spaced out - not back to back. Looking forward to seeing how this works and looks when fully “fettled”.

Very nice. Coincidentally, I also bought a Heljan 33/1 in BR Blue (112 Templecombe, with black cab surrounds) at Warley, although it's an older 2nd hand model. I also received a CS blue 92 last week, although it's the DCC Ready version of the other CS one, 010, which oddly doesn't have the painted underframe/bogie details, but completely agree it's the best 00 model I've seen.
I love the super elevation and I like the idea behind using it on the S curve but like you said it doesn't work. I would also extend the elevation into the tunnels so that as the trains are coming out of them are already tilting. And you answered my question if you were going to build staging/fiddle modules for in exhibition mode. I have to say I love your idea of creating a dual purpose layout. Can't wait for the next update!
I feel like the super elevation is a combination of too short a distance and too much elevation. in the s curves, it really is exaggerated when the train leans from one side to the other. i think it would be better to reduce the overall height of the elevation and try to extend the distance between elevation changes.
Agreed. The way the carriages lurched from side to side as the super elevation changed from one side to the other was disconcerting, to say the least. Watch ~10 seconds, starting at 11:20
Also you need to start the S/E from within the tunnel area as it will look far better emerging already at ‘tilt’. I have done S/E successfully and allowed a minimum of 4” between changes of tilt direction. Avoids the naughty wheel antics you have discovered. He He!
Great update Richard. I love the concept of stopping trains with nails :) I'll try that. 4 tracks is plenty to have fun with. I'm currently building an end to end exhibition layout that will have much less.
Absolutely amazing video Richard 🙂, the layout is coming along nicely, I love all the new stock and locos, can't wait to see more updates! Thanks for sharing 😊

great update the layouts really starting to take shape and really nice trackwork, your right about hornby trains will run on anything, other locos like dapol manors hate my 2nd radius points lol, keep up the good work. Tom
Looking good Richard, you've put in a lot of work and it shows, layout is coming along nicely. I remember all the woodwork building mine, took forever, but worth getting it right. Fun bit starts now with trains running and best of all the scenery build, personally my favourite part. Will definitely drop by to see how you're doing in your next update. All the best, Graham 🙂🚂
I really enjoy these updates, even if I’m not actively building a layout myself. I agree the curves at the ‘garage door’ end will be tight, although it would be a shame to only have 2 of the mainlines completed. Only suggestion I have is to end the straight sections sooner, to give more space for the curves. And for ‘exhibition’ mode, where the straights wouldn’t reach the edge of the baseboard, you’d need an additional drop-in piece to bridge the gap. Probably too complicated.
Opened a new 33 while watching this! One of my favourites, Heljan did a nice job of the 2015 retool. Blimey the layout is getting complex, you've certainly set yourself a challenge! I see you'll be continuing to work on the elevation for the curves 👍 It is possible to get it super smooth with those 3d printed wedges but I can't remember how many hours I must've spent messing about with it! Cheers
Very interesting vid last night Richard, I've killed my Parsons Heath layout and am in the early stages of a 12x8 N Gauge Eastern region layout 4 track mainline for expresses/express freights and two track branch with station and small depot for freights, DMU and the boat train to Harwich... may sneak a branch off for a little heritage line ;) Do love your updates really entertaining mate.
Great update as always. The layout is coming along nicely and I love all the different levels. Really adds character. The super elevation looks great, and as someone else might have said it may look a bit jerky, because the change of side on the elevation is so quick. Maybe reducing the height may help? Look forward to seeing more updates soon
Great video and update here Richard, enjoying the progress of this layout, some good additions especially with the 92, I got my 92022 Charles Dickens and have to say it is a very good locomotive, I have unfortunately just had to purchase some Railfreight distribution lettering transfers for it because the lettering has started rubbing off in places which has annoyed me quite a bit but hopefully I can repair that with the transfers, nice class 33, looks good in the museum fresh condition, I’m currently trying to make a Mallard in museum condition, i also recently picked up one of the dapol class 59s in the DB Schenker livery as well, overall great update here Richard, have a good new year and keep up the great work.
I like the four train plan. You might also consider a BIg Four train run in similar fashion. Maybe even set up the tunnels to fill with steam before the Heritage Trains come out of the potals.
@@NewJunction Thats good but, The real thing has forward facing steam vents which inside the tunnel they would project the steam out of the tunnel before the engines gets there. Particularly if they were moving slowly out of the tunnel. Just a suggestion that could make the entrance of Big Four more dramatic. as you said it could be a once only or whenever a steam engine leaves the tunnel. The Big Four LMS , GWR, LNER, and SR -- ALL their best Steam engines their best express trains have you got them?
It’s possible if you extend the main line in a wide loop covering the heritage line giving the “inside/outside” line more room for the curve to be useable
I hope you can manage to fit the curves to the 4 track mainline, or at least connect up with curved points, even if it's 2 tracks at garage door end.... in "garage mode". I am sure you will work something out, maybe reduced speed for tighter radius!!! Awesome layout.
Coming along very nicely although I would suggest your transition to super elevation is too abrupt and would benefit from being a little smoother. Out of interest, will the backscene be on the inside or outside or options for both depending on whether the layout is in Garage mode or Exhibition mode. Actually can’t wait to see this layout in the flesh at an exhibition one day. Happy New Year! Cheers, Dave
Just a thought for the landscaping of those inside corners, have you thought of bringing the landscaping down below the level of the baseboards? Hard to describe but seen it on a few US layouts, the scenery comes over the side of the baseboard and it gives you more height for building hills etc. just a thought, may be difficult to transport.
Coming along nicely which is more than can be said for my layout...one thing that I've noticed tho is how close to the edge your trackwork is at the ends (under the display cabinet and along the garage door), I'd hate to see you lose a loco to the floor because of it
Hi Richard, I remember 33116 when she did look like the model. She was used for charter services & boat trains with 2 TCs repainted in to their original BR plain blue livery. Seems, as you say, she has been let to go a bit manky since preserved, such a shame.
I get joining the rear and front baseboards to get a straight run on the exhibition circuit - but where are the fiddle yards at each end going to come from as no mention so far?
Another fascinating video, wish they'd been around when I started my layout 14 years ago! it was interesting what you said about the four upper tracks at the fiddle yard joins, but I was wondering how the heritage line joining-up will be achieived as it's hidden on the lower level (maybe I missed that episode!) looking forward to the next one.
About to start a build in my garage , would like to use a similar layout to yours m8 . I am an ex train driver and signaller for Southern . Hope ok . your instructional vids are superb . Ade
Hi ya Richard. Fantastic vlog as usual. What great progress you've made. Can't wait to see the scenics starting. Wish I had that great space, only got 10ft x 10ft. Dan's model railways just did a review on the 92. I'm sorry to say and I know you like hornby, but Accurascale leave the likes Hornby and Bachmann standing for price and detail. What do you think? Getting a bit worried we weren't going to see Lulu though.🐕 Keep safe mucker, DELPH JUNCTION
A great update, looking forward to seeing the full garage circuit of track complete. With the trains now running more like to ask which controller you now use for the layout. You did a review between the Select and Gaugemaster number years back, which is your matter of choice now? Thankyou both, you mad lulu for the video and inspiration. Marc
Great update Richard I'm looking forward to seeing you starting on the scenery bits and how you marrie up both sides of the mainline it does seem to be a very complex layout for a garage mode and exhibition mode but I'm sure you know what you doing it be awesome I'm sure. Just a quick one will you be leaving enough hight room so you can have all the working pantograph up? Kind regards Gary and Happy New Year to you and family too
Brilliant update to end the year Richard, thank you again What are you planning on having as the other scenic break? And do you have a style in mind for your heritage line( you do like the GCR) Love the updates, and await the next one, and the day we get to see in the flesh My layout is similar idea to yours, but in garage mode at exhibitions, 16x8' 3 sided scenic forth side big hill to hide fiddle access. It's currently under going a re model on one side, so no playing at the mo Thanks again, and may I wish you and your family a Happy New Year
Nice bit of trackwork Richard - will look spectacular once ballasted and the scenics are in. Will Warley and Model Rail Scotland be possible exhibitions the layout might grace at some point in the future ? Cheers Euan
So with the exhibition mode, presumably you have a fiddle yard planned to run behind the scenic break? I don’t hear mention of it. Do you know what form it will take?
Interesting update. I saw the class 92s at my club and was very impressed. So much so that I said I was going to buy one. However I changed my mind again. I also cancelled my pre-order for thie class 31 too but I have got some coaches (RTC & TPE) and class 37s on order with Accurascale. There are other older locos I want more than the class 92 and 31. Looking forward to scenery being added. You also menioned a concern about one end being a bit tight. Didn't you have this designed on software that should prove it fits? I am going to help fit the track for the Dementia Den I volunteer with on Saturday. I designed the layout for people with dementia in mind, so I hope it fits!
Very nice Richard, you've made great progress. Can I ask what you've done to your garage to make it more temperature proofed? Thanks in advance 👍✌️😊 BTW the "can't" (super elevation) needs calming, as in reality, such is done over a great deal of distance on the real railway. It's tricky to get right in model form, I've dabbled with it in OO, O and SM32. The season's greetings to you and yours🍻🥂✨💜👍✌️😊
@@NewJunction 😄😄👍 Good man, CANT looks fab on models but is a right b@gger to get right in my experience, trial and error😊✌️💜 Thanks for info on the garage. For the first time ever our garage - after the exceptional early cold weather then thaw, sweated up, mainly on plastics. I was to store locos (in their boxes, with silica gel sachets, in bubble wrap, in a plastic storage box, with larger indicator silica gel sachets) in the garage. Now I'm pondering if plastic boxes would sweat up and/or bubble wrap too. If the weather/climate is cooling (I'm not convinced by carbon climate change as the academic papers don't indicate such), I, ironically might have to consider a dehumidifier in winter and perhaps a diesel heater. I noted local shops had indoor floods due to thaw condensation on their plate glass windows. I've never seen per like it in 50 plus years🤔🤔🤔🙄🙄🤕☹️
May I ask what's the purpose of the banking? Is that a real thing or is this for simulation? I would have thought it increases the chances of derailment? Wonderful update as always. Thank you
A genuine comment/observation rather than a criticism: when the train comes out of the tunnel it looks a bit strange suddenly elevating up as it gets to the super-elevated track. I really think you need to start the super-elevation earlier so that it is already “tilted” when it arrives at the tunnel mouth?
I'm really intrigued by the garage vs. exhibition idea - assuming the frontage gets about twice as long when in exhibition mode... does that mean you need to build another set of boards to complete the loops? Sounds challenging! Also - just out of interest, as I've never considered an exhibition before (but, if I ever get started on my layout), what sort of space can you get at an exhibition, and roughly (*very* roughly!) what sort of costs are involved? Good luck & it looks brilliant by the way!
Yes I've still to build the fiddle yards, I'll consider that closer to the time. Exhibition wise most shows cover your costs to go and put you up etc space is down to the show but there are some big halls to fill out there.
Partially agree, at 16:38 "the third line", if the 1st is the line furthest away, would be the fast up line. Southbound lines are only the up lines north of The Thames. For those of us "down south", northbound lines are up lines. I don't know the official way of describing it, but if you're on the platform and facing where the carriage door will be be, the train will approach from your right.
At this stage no idea, its a tad early! If I could choose it would go to The Great Electric Train Show and maby Model Rail Scotland as they're my favourites.
Aw bless Lulu! I have five spaniels..........!!!! Been meaning to ask - I saw you coming out of Hall 2 at the Spalding show this year as I was going in. What did you think? I thought it was good value but I heard folk complaining about the tenner to get in etc etc.
I am wanting to buy my hubby a new controller as he has a Guagemaster Prodigy but it only has 20 loco functions. I am thinking of the Z21 by Roco and Fleichman. Is his a good controller or is there others that are better. It needs to go up to at least 28 loco functions as I bought him an Accurascale Deltic 55. Love your channel and meeting you at the Great Electric Train Show last year, you were so warm and friendly.
Hi Janet, I'd get him down to a shop that sells and demos them as controllers can be a very personal choice. If you're local Digitrains in Lincoln have a very good selection and demo units.

Thanks will do! 😊
I like the four train plan. You might also consider a BIg Four train run in similar fashion. Maybe even set up the tunnels to fill with steam before the Heritage Trains come out of the potals.
My steam engine will be steam fitted 😊
@@NewJunction Thats good but, The real thing has forward facing steam vents which inside the tunnel they would project the steam out of the tunnel before the engines gets there. Particularly if they were moving slowly out of the tunnel. Just a suggestion that could make the entrance of Big Four more dramatic. as you said it could be a once only or whenever a steam engine leaves the tunnel. The Big Four LMS , GWR, LNER, and SR -- ALL their best Steam engines their best express trains have you got them?
@@georgethomas7814 no my current steam collection is very small
@@NewJunction shame... maybe borrow some for the exhibitions??
@@georgethomas7814 Long way off so who knows what will join the fleet!
Love the channel, mate.
Many thanks! 😊
It’s possible if you extend the main line in a wide loop covering the heritage line giving the “inside/outside” line more room for the curve to be useable
Yes thats a good idea
I hope you can manage to fit the curves to the 4 track mainline, or at least connect up with curved points, even if it's 2 tracks at garage door end.... in "garage mode".
I am sure you will work something out, maybe reduced speed for tighter radius!!! Awesome layout.
I'll work something out! 😁
Hi Dave, you're right the elevation needs work. Back scene I've not decided yet but I'd guess only at exhibitions it'll have one. 😊
Coming along nicely which is more than can be said for my layout...one thing that I've noticed tho is how close to the edge your trackwork is at the ends (under the display cabinet and along the garage door), I'd hate to see you lose a loco to the floor because of it
I'll add a safety lip eventually 😊
At 12:13 one of the wooden supports for the heritage line seemed to have other ideas
Ha yes, I store spare posts under there and the Hall found one..
Hi Richard,
I remember 33116 when she did look like the model. She was used for charter services & boat trains with 2 TCs repainted in to their original BR plain blue livery. Seems, as you say, she has been let to go a bit manky since preserved, such a shame.
I think it adds character to the loco lol
Who was waiting for that train to run off the end of the track. I thought that was a green screen when that train stopped dead.
Ha it was very close!
Can you do a video talking through the photography you have on display in the garage?
I get joining the rear and front baseboards to get a straight run on the exhibition circuit - but where are the fiddle yards at each end going to come from as no mention so far?
The fiddle yards are yet to be built! 😅
The heritage line is its own loop and will have its own fiddle yard. 😊
I would love to see this layout at an exabition
One day I hope!
About to start a build in my garage , would like to use a similar layout to yours m8 . I am an ex train driver and signaller for Southern . Hope ok . your instructional vids are superb . Ade
Thanks Adr, best of luck!
Getting a bit worried we weren't going to see Lulu though.🐕
Keep safe mucker,
DELPH JUNCTION
10x10 is plenty of room! 😊 accurascale certainly are putting the cat among the pigeons, great for us!
Great video as usual - thank you and happy new year. One question if I may, Where can you source those glass-fronted storage cabinets please?
A great update, looking forward to seeing the full garage circuit of track complete. With the trains now running more like to ask which controller you now use for the layout. You did a review between the Select and Gaugemaster number years back, which is your matter of choice now? Thankyou both, you mad lulu for the video and inspiration. Marc
Keep up the good work! :)
Thanks will.do!
Thanks for the video - It may be an optical illusion but the paler tunnel mouth looks like track clearance may be tight with two trains passing?
It is too low currently, thats the next job hehe
Great update Richard I'm looking forward to seeing you starting on the scenery bits and how you marrie up both sides of the mainline it does seem to be a very complex layout for a garage mode and exhibition mode but I'm sure you know what you doing it be awesome I'm sure. Just a quick one will you be leaving enough hight room so you can have all the working pantograph up? Kind regards Gary and Happy New Year to you and family too
Hi Gary, yes I'll be making more head room when I come to tackle the portals 😊
Brilliant update to end the year Richard, thank you again
What are you planning on having as the other scenic break? And do you have a style in mind for your heritage line( you do like the GCR)
Love the updates, and await the next one, and the day we get to see in the flesh
My layout is similar idea to yours, but in garage mode at exhibitions, 16x8' 3 sided scenic forth side big hill to hide fiddle access. It's currently under going a re model on one side, so no playing at the mo
Thanks again, and may I wish you and your family a Happy New Year
Oooo I've not thought that far ahead yet! Any suggestions welcome! 😅
@@NewJunction has to be Copenhagen tunnel inspired, would work in both modes
Nice bit of trackwork Richard - will look spectacular once ballasted and the scenics are in. Will Warley and Model Rail Scotland be possible exhibitions the layout might grace at some point in the future ? Cheers Euan
Its not up to me, it depends if they'd have me haha
So with the exhibition mode, presumably you have a fiddle yard planned to run behind the scenic break? I don’t hear mention of it. Do you know what form it will take?
More base boards yet to be made 😊
Interesting update.
I did use software however I've changed the plan slightly haha
Very nice Richard, you've made great progress.
Can I ask what you've done to your garage to make it more temperature proofed? Thanks in advance 👍✌️😊
BTW the "can't" (super elevation) needs calming, as in reality, such is done over a great deal of distance on the real railway. It's tricky to get right in model form, I've dabbled with it in OO, O and SM32.
The season's greetings to you and yours🍻🥂✨💜👍✌️😊
Cant calming underway as we speak 😁 in terms of the garage I've not insulated it at all.
@@NewJunction 😄😄👍 Good man, CANT looks fab on models but is a right b@gger to get right in my experience, trial and error😊✌️💜
Thanks for info on the garage.
100%, its on the to-do list. 😁
@@NewJunction phew…
Hello Lulu!
Woof!
You got a 3d u will you get a 3d Lula or even better walking her to add to layout
how old and what breed of dog is Lu Lu fantastic layout have you set a deadline to be ready for your first exhibition
Lulu is an English working Cocker spaniel and is seven. No deadline yet although things will speed up once I get to the scenery... I hope 😁
Richard. I think you have your Up & Downs the wrong way. Up is always to London. So the southbound lines are the Up lines.
That wouldn't supprize me, the layouts confusing enough lol
Partially agree, at 16:38 "the third line", if the 1st is the line furthest away, would be the fast up line. Southbound lines are only the up lines north of The Thames. For those of us "down south", northbound lines are up lines.
I don't know the official way of describing it, but if you're on the platform and facing where the carriage door will be be, the train will approach from your right.
Loving the updates on the layout Richard coming on really well.. have you any ideas as to the 1st Exhibition it will be at?
At this stage no idea, its a tad early! If I could choose it would go to The Great Electric Train Show and maby Model Rail Scotland as they're my favourites.
Aw bless Lulu! I have five spaniels..........!!!!
Been meaning to ask - I saw you coming out of Hall 2 at the Spalding show this year as I was going in. What did you think? I thought it was good value but I heard folk complaining about the tenner to get in etc etc.
I didn't get to see much of the show due to being an exhibitioner myself, what I did see what good mind. You'll never please everyone haha
Thank you, Lincoln is about an hour away so will definitely take a trip to Digitrains, 😀😀
@@JanetSuggitt they have an open day on Saturday 21st, I'll be attending with a layout. You should come along then. 😊
@@NewJunction brilliant, we will be there, thanks again 😀😀

Is the DVT not playing with the 91 😁
Nope haha
Hi, so when in exhibition mode, will it be an end to end or will you join the two ends with a fiddle yard?
They'll be a fiddle yard thats yet to be built 😊
