Yes. The one thing I find with a lot of these model railways is they put a lot of effort into weathering the locos, trains, and tracks, but then they make the roads look pristine! Roadworks, potholes, and patched tarmac would make it look more realistic.
At about 16:30 on the video, can't help but notice that the track on the extreme right is very close to the baseboard edge!! Maybe a backscene is planned to make that safer?
Just thought I'd say hi Richard. Met you at Darlington model rail show couple of weeks back. I was the other big guy in the room. Was a pleasure to meet you and glad to see you got some time on the layout.
Texted paint nice idea, I need to try a road myself, I might try black foam push in a slightly smaller gap to get the camber, no moving vehicles planned.
Steady progress; progress all the same no matter how small. Odd jobs can add up so done well to pin point them and sort them. Looking forward to GET Show; all best Marc from Leighton Buzzard
As you mentioned the moving cars, Viessmann's Car Motion system might also be an option. Even though you're road is pretty much laid already. It's a fairly new system still being developed and updated and expected to run H0 scale car models rather soon too. And has loads of functions activated via magnets. Might be something to look into if, even though it could be completely overkill for your layout 😅.
Great to see the progress Richard. I had no idea bout the layout of Thirsk station so popped on Maps to look and I can well imagine from the bridge end where the carpark is, that to access the heritage line, a narrow lane would run from the carpark, between the bubbling lines down a slope and around to the lower station - you could include a low-loader with an engine arriving trying to navigate it, or have some of your automatic cars running up and down as well!
Hi ya Richard. Layout looking superb. Like the textured paint on the roadway, made a mistake with mine, so could do what you have done. Love the deltic going round, lovely smooth running. Platform looking good. Thank you for the update Richard. Might see you at GETS. Thumbs up thumped 👍 ....Pete....
Thanks for that video. I had to install a meter monitoring the current consumption of my DCC locos, I had a home built power supply that shorted out when I threw a point that was not DCC friendly, and ended up throwing 25 volts into a chip and destroying it, so I consider it a must, especially as the Hornby power supply for hm 7000 doesn't seem to have over current protection!
Ooh that’s interesting in modelling Thirsk Station, can’t wait to see your bridge when you build it. I remember the old Trans Pennine Peaks and 47’s stopping there in the 80’s with 7 coaches on. I’m sure the odd HST stopped there too, remember stopping there on our many trips to the south and north west from Darlington. Fantastic layout by the way, she’s really taking shape now.
An idea for the station could be to think of it as a higher and lower level. Imagining back in steam days the station was much bigger and more significant, acting as an interchange between the main line and a larger branch line. But present day post beeching the line is now part preserved as a heritage railway. That may look less cluttered station wise as its not 2 stations next to each other but one larger station that is part 'network rail' mainline and part heritage railway, thinking like places like Keighley. One station serves both heratige and mainline. Ive looked for british examples of two level stations running parallel. There aren't really any around anymore but used to be some back in steam days. Closest visible example I can find now is Craigendoran. The higher level no longer has platforms, they were closed and demolished in 1964. But you can see how close the lines were. May be worth looking into though.
Greetings from USA. I am happy to see your channel back up with a new episode. You mentioned being unhappy with the texture of the road. I found it quite realistic as it could have represented an old road that has not seen resurfacing in quite some time. The bumps and Brabble would indicate wear as time went by with the lack of maintenance. All I would have done was heavily weather the road markings. I noticed a @4:29 and several other points in the video that your carriages come extremely close to the side of your tunnel. did you do that on purpose? I ask because there seems to be adequate room to move the track inward a bit to give more space there without interfering with the second track. At any rate, I am looking forward to more improvements on your next episode.
Great update mate, nice to see you starting work on the other side of the layout. Hopefully will get to see you at GETS, picked up my tickets for the Sunday. All the best Richard! 😊👍 - Harry
A great update video, it's always good to see how your progressing. My grandson found the road particularly interesting as he's just started doing a road, using filler on his 009-layout. You can see him adding it on his latest update video. I don't know if you've seen any of his 009-layout build videos on his DylingtonModel Railway channel, but he's doing quite well with it. Anyway that was another enjoyable video...cheers James 🙂👍
A short circuit across the track somewhere on your layout will not damage a decoder somewhere else. The point of circuit breakers is to protect the command station. A short circuit can only damage the path through which it flows. The command station, of course, has its own built in circuit breaking system to protect it (or else you would destroy it the first time that you had a short). The purpose of these external units is either to add redundancy to the command station's protection, or, more usefully, to subdivide your layout into different districts so that a short on one part of the layout won't stop trains on another part of the layout (but you need several of them for that). In any event, it is good to see some progress! Hopefully, I will see this at an exhibition one day.
Progressing nicely. Just a thought but the heritage station NYMR Grosmont or Levisham. I have based my scratch built station (still building) on Scalby Station part of the Scarborough to Whitby line long now of course. Another possible option. Always great to catch up on where you are at with your layout as you are a continual inspiration to us all. Hmmm garage layout, now that could be my next move to upscale my layout.
I would recommend for the mainline station, like thirsk, the middle lines should be a little further away from the platform edge, and then small scenery can be added for realism. Im not completely sure if this makes sense Richard, but basically i would recommend looking at some images of Thirsk station itself and particularly the middle passing lines, to correct the distance and therefore realism between the edge and lines. Sorry for going on so much but it would really improve the station when its done. Thanks Platform5
@Platform5 I know exactly what you mean, I've been to Thirsk Station. Building a Model Railway is all about compromise, sadly this time, base board width dosent allow the space.
17:30 I am thinking of a Shrewsbury platform aesthetic esp the Welsh Birmingham New Street to Aberystwyth service where the train stops and then turns around - it feels like the train stops in the station/bridge/wall all-in-one platform
Hi Richard another great update the layout is coming along nicely. Reading some of the other comments and i agree it might be good to setup in exhibition mode to understand how/where the heritage station fits in the scene to keep it all balanced. Also i was wondering where you got your display cabinets from. Cheers Jon
Love watchig your updates to the layout. Regarding the heritage line station, I'm guessing you are having two platforms, one either side of the tracks. Would an offset station be an idea for this area? There are still examples on the main line now, Ribblehead, for example, on the S&C line is offset. May offer a interesting variation of a station for the layout.
I would imagine the heritage and main line railways were two separate companies so stations wouldn't have been next to each other. Although it would be nice to have some kind of link I.e. footpath.
Hey Richard, Another good update. I also have a similar large ‘to do list’ and it is re-assuring to know I am not alone! Just a thought about the roadway you are planning to use, will the vehicles be okay on a textured surface?
With the other view of the other side of the layout as it stands now, when might be the next time you take it out and set it up in the exhibition style? Not because I am wanting to see it again, but because I’m curious about what step coming up would benefit the most from stretching out somewhere?

Suggest putting road works on that road section!
If the road doesn't work out, why not use chinchilla dust in wood filler? It will give a road texture and you can colour the filler before adding it.
