New Layout Build - Baseboards

- It's taken a long time to get this far but I'm finally building the baseboards for the new layout. They layout will be mostly of the open frame design with only the fiddle yard having a full size top. I learned my lesson from the previous layout and the new baseboards are built to reduce the chance of warping as much as possible. They're certainly quite a bit stronger than the old ones were.

From timber purchase, to adjustable feet, to tables joined, to body weight stability test! Us mere mortals need look no further for advice, tips and sheer inspiration! Everard you are a true Jack of all trades, master of many! ☮️💕🏁
All the best jobs at work are 'Home Jobs' lol nice work. gonna be making some baseboards myself soon
It is amazing what a skilled craftsman can do with the proper tools and equipment. Well done Richard.
Never been into trains or model making but this channel is fuelling my enthusiasm. My grandfather drove The flying Scotsman so hoping to reincarnate his past.
Glad to have you back Everard Junction! You have certainly put a lot of thought into the construction of the new baseboards and to making the loft more habitable. Look forward to seeing the new layout take shape and grow over the coming months and years!
When you ripped out the old layout I cried, but I can see you enjoying the building process as much as you enjoy running the trains. I have enjoyed watching you glue, screw, and weld. It is nice to see someone using a normal screwdriver for a change rather than an electric one. Looking forward to following the new layout as it gets built up. Thank you for sharing the process with us.
Now that model railroad season has returned, it’s great to see you starting the new layout Richard. I am just finishing full renovations in my basement for my new layout and your new layout is giving me the inspiration and initiative I need to get going. Looking forward to your progress (and mine) over the winter 😊
Very excited to see the new build - thank you for covering your process in such detail.
Brilliant video. So looking forward to your new layout. Love all your ideas and suggestions. 😊
Welcome back. Great to see all you have improved in the loft. Looks great with the new baseboards. Thanks for sharing the build so far.
Your welding skills have come in very handy Richard helps keep the cost down great to see you back Alan
Absolutely brilliant........😃
Not more I can say about your enthusiasm Richard.
Looking forward for your next update 👍
Well done Stevie 😃
Welcome back Richard 😊. Can’t wait to see all the boards in place. Inspiration to us all 😊
It is an odd but very nice thing that i enjoy watching someone just building basically wooden tables. I would not watch if it was just that but it is the anticipation of what comes next. Scenery and TRAINS!!
Bit of a way to go before the trains. They're on their way, just a bit delayed.
take your time, it is fun to follow the process
I’m planning on building an N gauge railway, for the first time. It will be my first attempt at building my own model railway set in the 70s and 80s era. This is very instructive, thanks.
Great to have you back, thank you for taking the time to share your hobby and tips with us. Always look forward to your Videos.
Hi Richard
Great to see what you've done to your loft and the start of the new layout boards etc.
Looking forward to watching the new layout progress, hopefully see the track plan soon...
Cheers
Paul
Bit more work ahead before you see the track plan. Cheers
It's great to have you back! I loved to see how much effort, thoughts and detail has gone into planning and building the new baseboard for the soon-to-be new layout, I can't really wait to see what's gonna come out out of it, being sure that will be something amazing anyway :) Cheers Richard :)
Don't ever stop making time lapses!! I could literally watch a time lapse of you watching paint dry. Can't wait for the next one! Good work!
It's been a very long 6 months without your videos, it's great to have you back....
So pleased to see you back. Great work on the boards so far, looking forward to watching this progress. Cheers, Timmo
Thanks for this... I respect you craftspersonship... And the results are excellent. For me, watching is really enjoyable.. I'd go so far to say, therapeutic. Thank you.
Never clicked on a video so fast before, very keen to watch the progress of this new layout, very keen thank you for sharing :)
Brilliant Video as always, great skills and planning, had me fixed from start to finish.
Looking forward to the next one.
Oh to be young and fit, you have done a fantastic job making your baseboards and as you said warping will most certainly be a thing of the past. Great to see you back and will look forward to your next video. Cheers Greg from Australia.
Hello Richard, its so nice to see your return once again after so long . I can relate to lining out inner parts of roof, agree its very time consuming indeed.Rerunning new gable runs, light fixings etc.It is a thankful task but well worth it in the end and a peace of mind .This is a area that isn't very interesting i know but so worth after all awkward cuts are made, between the roof joists, secured, plus the loft still can breath so to speak.n the winter and summer months.Such a much more pleasant place to work, continue, the construction towards one's new layout, towards your existng layout. That you had mentioned in past to improve on.adjustments etc
I'm not a railroad modeler, but I am a huge fan of your work. I'm damn glad to see you back at it. No one makes me want to give model railroading a try more than you do. Keep it up!
Great to see you back Richard ....it's been too long ! good to see you finally got the loft insulated which will make all the difference......cheers Tony
Brilliant brilliant brilliant. Really happy your back mate. As I've said before,I don't have or want a model railway,I just enjoy watching and following the progress of your layout!! And you prove that this country is still the best at producing the best engineer's in the world!!!
Great stuff, can't wait to see the completed baseboards and see where your going to start😀 the wheelies are turning to see what your going to achieve 👍🚂🚂🚂
Good job, great to have you back and looking forward to some regular video's. Cannot wait to see the inaugural train!
Great to see you back, BIG BIG fan of Everard Junction, have learned so much from watching all your vids over and over again...Mal
At 20 minutes.... this is so exciting !! Going to look great when it's all done. Love the back scene 'slot in' idea, awesome idea !

Brilliant - Welcome Back. Looking forward to your epic journey as you recreate Everard Junction Mk2. Your videos are a brilliant encyclopaedia for practical and effective layout building and modelling skills. Glad you've gone for ply baseboards.
Great job!
Massive job ahead!
Thank you for sharing!!!...
Welcome Back!
Can watch you skills all day! Great to have you back.
I just wanted to say thanks for the baseboard “slot” idea. I’ve followed you for a while now but I’ve just gone back the beginning as I’m starting my baseboards soon. Love the content. Thank you for sharing.
Glad to see your back missed your videos of the layout I can't wait to see how it all turns out and you have me wanting to build my own layout again
Welcome back Richard. It's good see you again! I'll be looking forward to many videos on this new layout build. Thanks for sharing the baseboard build, very simple yet more than sturdy enough to handle the task at hand. Peace........... Mike
Stupendous beginnings! And excellent engineering & craftsmanship to boot. I look forward to many more months of your journey! Well done, Richard!
Nice to see a young engineer at work best regards from an old engineer! Looking really good.
Thanks mate.
Hi Richard, It is So Fricken Awesome to have you back again. Do hope you are well and looking forward to doing new layout, as much as we love watching your projects develop 😎👍
Best wishes Dan
Attention to detail is just second to none. With the adjustable feet for the legs.. I would of just bought them haha.. cant wait for next vid.
You made my day! I was delighted when I saw this upload so I saved it for tonight when I could sit and enjoy it... and you didn't disappoint. Thank you.
Brendan.
Nice planning and execution for the build Richard! Great to see you back as well. Looking forward to the next episode. Cheers, Dan
Great to see you back! Hope to see more updates in the coming months! Interesting modular setup even for a permanent layout so looking forward how that pans out. Cheers :)
I have waited what feels like a lifetime for you to come back. Can't wait to see all the videos. Your awesome. Thanks.
Good to see your back at it. Great benchwork! Looking forward to seeing more.
Great to see you back Richard. It's all been said below. Your out in a league off your own.Best of luck
The construction of good baseboards is important and you have certainly done a very good job on yours. Adjustable feet are so important...you would be surprised the difference in floor heights when I take my exhibition layout out, and that's just four 7ft boards!! I look forward to what follows. Cheers, Bob
Great to see you back.
Excellent start. Great idea for the levelers. Can't wait for the next video. Cheers! Ray L
Bloody fortunate to get that wood cut for free even at a local merchant. Every one near me charges 50p a cut!!
Just what I need to do to my attic before my construction begins in earnest! Great job, looking forward to how things progress!
Nice job! Glad to see your videos back to my feed!
Great progress, glad to see the layout starting to take shape again! Love the idea for the leveling feet. I used a very similar design for the baseboards and legs, but currently just use wooden shims to level out the legs. I'm not quite as skilled in metal work, so still need a more permanent solution. Looking forward to seeing things continue to progress! Iain
Thanks for taking the time to show use your solution to things. Invariably our solutions will be what we know or what we can do ourselves. Another solution for the levelers would be a block of timber in the bottom of each leg with a through hole and a tee nut.
This is so exciting, so looking forward to following your progress Richard.
Oh boy here I go watching the rebirth of Everard Junction again! Cheers from the States.
So good to have you back. Looking forward to your next video. G’day from Australia we have missed you. Can’t wait to see it with trains running again.
i got a lot of ideas for my own Dean Park layout from his old one....so watching closely here lol
Good work Richard. I think I'd have just bought the leg levellers from eBay!!😜
Id use T nuts into the wood, with a bolt and lock nut..... easy peasy, and cheap
Very good quality construction there! 10/10
Great to see you back again with more inspiring ideas with great engineering skills & infectious enthusiasm for detail & living the dream with them workshop facilities.
Definitely gave me incentive to remodel my loft & layout next year.
So good to have you back. Looking forward to the rebirth of Everard Junction.
Welcome back. Looking forward to seeing how everything progresses from start to finish!
Great to see you back. I enjoyed all your old layout vids and have no doubts that I will enjoy the new ones as they arrive..... and thanks for taking the time to make them!
Great work! This will be a fun project to watch evolve for months and years to come.
Great to see you and the layout back some great quality work there with wood etc looking forward to seeing the next episode
Thank you for taking the time and effort in sharing this with us. Well done! :-)
The removable back scene idea is pure genius!!! Love the upload!
Great to see the Master is back,Great to see you back Richard.
Your videos are the best on youtube! youve learned me how to build a proper 6ft x 2ft 6in baseboard for my n gauge layout, big thank you mate.
glad to see that you're back and giving it horns....looking forward to see what you have planned.
Outstanding work my friend. I appreciate your attention to the infrastructure of your layout. I know you had issues with the old one and these preparations set up for correcting those problems. 👍🏻
Great start mate, I'll be watching all the way.Cheers John.
Great work, with the attention to detail on the base boards, I am very excited to see that transfer to the track work. Good Luck and I'm looking forward to the next video installment.
Great to see you back - looking forward to seeing it develop.
Great start to the new layout! Cheers, Dan
Hi Richard and welcome back. A great start there and looking forwards to seeing your progress. All Best.
Glad you’re back. Impressive amount of work getting the loft ready.
Enjoyed the building a model railway video and now see that you are rebuilding. Love the detail of the videos and cannot wait to see the new layout.
FINALLY, you’re back. I’m looking forward to seeing how this develops. Everard Junction and Dean Park Station are my favourite RUclips channels. I’ve had to look around for others in recent times, but the two of you are what got me hooked on these amazing videos. Welcome back and good luck with the build.
Good to see you back. Looking forward to the development of the new layout.
Welcome back Richard. Life has been empty and meaningless without ERJ :) Looking forward to following all your progress. Inspiring stuff.
Great to have you back looking forward to see the new layout take shape
Good to see you back, excellent insulation of the loft. The lighting is well thought out. I constructed my base boards the same way. 12mm for the frame and 9mm for the tops. I am at the track laying stage. I look forward to your next posting.
Good to see you back, mate. The new boards are looking the part. Can't wait to se it all come together.
Great to see you back Richard, eagerly awaiting your next video.
I'd been struggling with baseboard ideas for a while. Wish I had your woodworking skills. At school all I did was convert a piece of tree into sawdust. Thanks for all the great advice on the whole hobby. One of the problems I have is how to protect the wiring underneath and scenes above from pesky curious cats.
Great to have you back. At first I thought you'd made a gaff using the 2ft boards. Silly Boy! I should have known you'd have a reason with the back board slot. Very ingenious. I'm eagerly looking forward to the next episode.
Great to see you back up and running great video can't wait for the next one cheers George
Great to see the video’s back, great video to watch before I go for a job interview this morning!
Chris E. Roberts good luck, mate!
Good luck!
Best of luck to you lad
As Klingons say Success!
Good luck chap!
Superb video. Shows how much thought has gone into the process, plus a high degree of skill in the manufacturing. I especially liked how the box of screws moved during the speeded up video.
Nice to see you back, and good luck with the rest.
Brilliant - really enjoyed watching all of that.
As someone who has neither the time, space nor money to build a layout right now it's great to watch someone building one. Glad you're back
should get a job mate !
I have neither the time nor space... Or did you decide to not read that part?
yep read it all bud, like I said go get a job and stop whingeing
raskazone I have a job you fucking moron hence why I don't have the time to build one. I don't have the disposable income to be spending hundreds on everything that goes into a layout. Loco's, rolling stock, track, buildings etc. It all adds up. I don't have the space in my house to put a toy train set down. Attic and garage is for storage. Fuck off
that escalated quickly...
Awesome. First model railroad video I've seen with a goodly amount of MIG welding as part of the construction. Kudos. Looking forward to how it progresses.
Wow, lots done and looking good so far.
