"In keeping with a background in academia, Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA), a former law professor known for her rigorous interrogations at congressional hearings, made sure to study up before her first trip to Israel last month.
To improve her understanding of the region, Porter, a Democrat from Orange County, drew in particular on her connections within the Jewish community, she said, reading Noa Tishby’s book about Israel that a friend had recommended, consulting with a rabbi whose synagogue is located in her hometown of Irvine and reaching out to local AIPAC officials for a briefing on Middle East policy, among other things.
“I recognize that I am relatively new to this issue,” she said in an interview with Jewish Insider on Wednesday. “I tried to take a multifaceted approach and make sure that I was getting the most I could out of this particular trip,” she explained, “which I hope will be the first of many.”

We need to weigh the importance of having an actual economic populist, and countering the corporatism of nearly every other member of Congress and the White House against her being wrong on BeBe, again just like nearly every other member of Congress and the White House
And the other benefit of having Katie Porter in Congress is that she explains economic populism in a way people can understand which could move even more people and the national dialogue in the direction of economic populism to a point where voters start to demand transformative change on both sides of the aisle

@@DanGittens I agree with you that we need to elect the people that agree with us on the most issues and the most important issues. And we also need to factor in integrity and willingness to learn more about issues they may not have the most information on.
However, on this particular issue, the problem is, she is walking the party line. Everyone in the party tells her flying loyalty to Israel is the party position. But the left flank of which she’s a part of tends to peel away from the ass and take a more balanced view That while Israel is our ally, their current leadership is horrific and Trump like.
We were headed toward a two state solution where the Palestinian people would have their own land/settlements and then Netanyahu took a hard, hard right, turn and is lawless
Where I agree with you completely is that what put Katie Porter into the left flank is her economic populism which is what she knows the most about. She still has some learning to do on foreign policy and the pushback she gets on this I’m certain will be what it takes for her to better educate herself on the issue.
Remember, the entire democratic house leader ship is on the wrong side of this issue which I am certain is where she was in formed. Now the left flank has an opportunity to reach out to her and I’m certain they will.

  • @AdamBladeTaylor

Sorry, but you guys are completely wrong on this take.
Nowhere in Porter's comments did she praise Israel's actions involving Palestine, or Bibi's attempts to gain singular control over the legal system.
She said it was good that Israel was FINALLY talking to people on the left for once. And that they hoped to help push them on issues like Palestine and the courts.
She went in and negotiated, talked to the leaders of another country and tried to get them to understand her views. That's what she is supposed to do.
What did you want her to do? Show up and scream at Bibi, calling him a fascist and spit in his face?
And that would accomplish what exactly? Beyond making sure that Israel never again even thinks of talking to anyone on the left?

This is actually what Porter said. I was extremely impressed with his willingness to kind of grapple with us at some of the toughest issues that Israel’s facing, everything from judicial reform - an issue that we’re having questions and discussions about right now within the Democratic Party here in the United States - to issues about the West Bank and about settlements,” said the congresswoman.
“[We] emphasized, and I think Netanyahu emphasized back, that there’s a long-term project here, which is to have a vibrant, secure Jewish democratic state of Israel - and that in order to do that, there needs to be opportunities for the Palestinian people to have their own elected government and governance and land,” she continued. “How we get there is unclear right now. But we shouldn’t let the impediments to that progress prompt us to give up on the goal, given its incredible importance to Israel and to the region and to the United States.”

Israel and America sort of run parallel politically it seems. I’m glad pro democracy supporters are out in large numbers in Israel. However, Netanyahu like Trump don’t much care what the majority wants, they play to their loud extremist base, and that’s a pity. Only solution I see is to break up monopolies in the media, shine light on the dark money in politics, or remove it entirely. Laws to make it an offense for news organizations to lie is another need. There can be non media affiliated NGO’s to act as watchdog’s. If media want to share their opinion (lies?), there needs to be a clear distinction known to viewers.

One of the many reasons I love the whole TYT network is because they really do call it what it is. They’ve made many complimentary segments about Katie Porter in the past, and, at least in my opinion, have a favorable opinion of her. However, even if they’ve supported her previously, if she acts in an inappropriate or unacceptable manner, they will call her out on it. Just as aggressively as they would if it were McCarthy, Boebert, or MTGreen.
Though they don’t hide how they feel about their reporting, they report the facts without manipulating them to serve their own narrative. They even will praise the republicans when they deserve it regardless of their distaste for the party as a whole.
Thanks TYT for being a credible, honest, fair source of accurate information on the things that matter most. It’s a blessing to know that I’m not just enclosed in an echo chamber of ignorance that feeds my ego or need for justification for being a wretched, hateful hypocrite!

If Porter came out trashing Netenyahu, AIPAC would go to no lengths to end her campaign. Schumer would do all in his power to make sure she doesn’t progress in the CA Senate race.
Ana’s Adam Schiff example is apples to oranges, because Adam Schiff never criticized Netenyahu after a meeting with him. Katie Porter also has a history of voting to oppose financial support for Israel’s government, while Adam Schiff has a record of voting to financially support the Israel government.
