- We're joined by Rep. Katie Porter (D-Irvine), who recently came in third in the California's U.S. Senate Primary.
In this extended, unedited conversation, Porter discusses her controversial "rigged" comments following her primary loss, what the next few months in Congress hold as she finishes out her term, and what's next when she leaves public office in January.

She was one of the best things to happen in Congress. We still need her.
Her ambition was badly timed.
Running against Schiff was a bad move.
It made no sense at all.
Jamie Raskin was asked to nun for Senate, and he said he was more needed and could be more effective in the house.
Katie should have followed his lead and waited at least a year or two.

@@ctrlw__7-years-ago I believe you are correct, although they both knew they would run long before they announced. But there is much more to it than that.
While Katie is still on her committees in the House and being very effective, (she still had a year left of her term and she would definitely retain her seat in the House in 2025 if she hadn’t quit to run for senate) republicans have a vendetta against Schiff for leading the impeachment of Donald Trump.
Hopefully we will take back control of the House next year, but if we don’t, Schiff would continue to be a lame duck, powerless to achieve anything in the house. His constituents may even realize that and replace him.
In the senate he will not have those restrictions.
-In January, (2023) McCarthy, a top Trump ally, single-handedly removed Schiff and Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., from the Intelligence panel. “I think once Donald Trump threatened that any Republicans who didn't go along with his effort to censure me were going to get primaried, they fell in line. …”-Adam Schiff
Eric Swallwell only lost one committee and the republicans may hate him but he hasn’t been marked by Trump. Schiff has, and his only realistic opportunity to continue to work for us is by going to the senate.
Katie should have stuck to the house for now. After all, while Schiff has been in congress since 2001, Katie just got elected last year and hasn’t even completed one term yet. She needs more experience before moving up to the big leagues, IMO. She knew Schiff was going to run for that seat and had seniority, but she has grand ambitions and announced them early. I love her. I wish she had waited. That’s all. Now we’ve lost her. Will her constituents trust her again now that she’s quit on them half way through one term? I really hope so, but her replacement may be really good too and she may not get another shot.
Katie’s departure is a major loss for Democrats.
It's a major loss for the nation as well.

You misspelled dishonesty. The woman spun "fact" into propaganda well but that didn't change the fact that she completely misrepresented the facts to cover for Democrat caused problems.

She chose to do this and she had to know she would not beat Schiff. I think all of the attention she was getting went to her head and she made a colossal mistake in thinking that Adam Schiff, who is experienced, respected and has the demeanor of a Senator, could be beaten. She did this voluntarily. Then had the nerve to throw MAGA words around. I'm terribly disappointed in her.
I can understand your disappointment. She said a while back that she was frustrated that Congress didn't get a lot done...and that she felt she could make a real difference in the Senate. She's a lawyer and a law professor...sounds like she was frustrated and bored. I gotta say I feel disappointed because she was one Congress person that I could trust...that she really acted as a true public servant doing work for the good of the People. I'll miss that and her.
I bet she will be back in two years.

She did this. It wasn't done to her. She has 5 years in, while Schiff has 23 and Schiff has had a lot more responsibilities. He's respected and there was no way he wasn't going to win the nomination. Her ego got the better of her and now, she's not in the House AND she's throwing around MAGA words.

Katie already gave up on us. It was absurd for her to drop out to run against Schiff. She hasn't nearly the experience he has for starters. This felt like "ego" calling the shots. She knew her district could easily go red if she went after the Senate nod and she quite frankly didn't care. Now she's whining like a MAGA.

@@tracysample6942What are you basing that on? Because all I saw was a congresswoman who tried her best to cut through the political BS & lies with facts. And I think by often using a whiteboard to show people in only 5 minutes what the disscussed issue is really about or to show why a witness was lying or why their narrative was deceptive, she was really effective. It is only because the level of corruption in politics is so high that she couldn’t help to change much for everyday people. But it was Katie for instance that made it clear for every person very early on in the Covid pandemic that Covid testing was free during her 5 minute interrogation of a witness. Her stance on the Israeli war that has so far killed more than 33k Palestinians since October 7 is pretty bad, but other then that I always saw a person who did her best with the tools available to her to do the best job she could within the current corrupt political system.
She's in a swing district and Schiff's is safe blue, at that.

Porter is awesome. She is good at her job. She deals with real issues and represents the people well. She is sharp and does her homework on issues that she is working on. Our government needs more people that are honest and passionate like Ms Porter.
Astounding that a person THIS competent and intelligent and dedicated gets voted out. Very difficult to fathom.
She and Barbara Lee should have coordinated and not both been running. Together they were still less the other candidates but it would have helped.
She didn't get voted out. She gave up her safe house seat to run for the Senate and came in third in a primary where the top two face off in the general election.
It's precisely because she is so competent that she was not elected.
She left a job she was really, really good at, to go after a job she wasn't really qualified for, against a guy who actually is competent, intelligent and experienced at. She left a district that could easily go red to do something she knows she wasn't ever going to win. And now she's whining like a MAGA about it being rigged.
She didn't get voted out. She left.

Katie Porter is the kind of person our country needs to do what must be done.

I’m a senior white woman who voted for Katie Porter. I also received really ugly ads that I knew were not true but my public high school taught us critical thinking and how to see bias in media! I also was so depressed the day after I could barely get out of bed!
It is a shame. Katie Porter was very very good at her job and deserves to be in the Senate. I’m still going to vote for her as a write in candidate.

Katie Porter has the unusual talent, for a politician, of always telling the truth. And that, friends, is why she lost the election. We must all hope that she continues to express her views -- because we need her now more than ever.
Katie Porter has been my idol since she made it to Congress. I am so very sorry to hear she will not be running again for her seat, we will all miss her famous "White Boards", and hope that someone will carry on her mission of getting Government to work for the common people. If you believe that,. you aren't paying attention. There are plenty of Congresspeople on the left who are working tirelessly for the people. Katie was good at budget "stuff", which is why she was a necessary ingredient in the House (and not the Senate). She left the House, and her constituents, to run a race she knew she wasn't going to win (because Schiff is a more qualified candidate), and then whined about "rigged" when she inevitably lost. Also, her district could easily go red now and we lose her seat. So...nah...

She would by far be the best Vice President in history. Her work ethic, data analysis, and presentation skills could turn the VP role into something actually useful.
