I went to school with a guy who had muscular dystrophy.. he lived his life entirely from a wheelchair, he was unable to got the bathroom without assistance and the only way he could control the electric wheelchair was with a joystick because his arms and legs didn't move. Most people with MD do not get to live past 25 and my friend didn't even get to live to see his 21st birthday.
if you cant quite picture it then think of Prof Stephen Hawking who had a similar level of mobility but not the same disease.
Halli does not appear to be quite at that stage yet but he will probably end up there eventually and what elon did is completely disgraceful... it makes me never want to touch any of his products ever again.

I've been lucky in the age part. I'm 41, and well past the life expectancy. With the wheelchair, I have a small joystick that I have to use to control mine as well. It's nothing fancy, but it gets me around. The MD has weakened me to the point that I usually go to bed around 7:00 in the evening. I simply don't have the strength to stay up.
      This life is hell.
And to those of you who aren't disabled, cherish your ability to walk. You don't know how much you will miss it until it's no longer an option.

If it's elon musk posting his playground memes like that annoying kid in the playground who did the whole "talk to the hand"/ fresh prince and tie dye t shirt thing, or trump on stage at his rallies mocking someone with cerebal palsy. It's all part of the same grift playbook and they know it, and we know it. It'll be their disneyworld moment of 2023, then the slack or the whatsapp chat thread will leak and we'll all be like "oh... erm... awkward".

He did this specifically to be in a higher tax bracket...so Iceland can collect more tax from him. He really supports his country. Musk was impulsive in his initial response & subsequently offensive. The employee knew the proper procedures. I've been laid off before. If you stop working just bc you 'heard' something about lay offs or downsizing, but did not have that conversation with someone in authority or get a 'pink slip', you will very likely lose every benefits that you are entitled to after being correctly & officially notified that you are being laid off by your employer; unemployment & healthcare benefits, severance pay, etc. Years ago, the Dupont Company laid off over 3,000 people in one day. They had employees all over the 🌎 and I bet they did it the right way. Musk has money. To him that means power to do anything he wants, but there are laws regarding how you govern your business and employees that can't be ignored just bc you hv money. He's about to lose a bunch of that money. He's so ignorant or arrogant or both that he thinks the world runs according to how HE believes it should run.

HR having no clue if someone's employment was terminated or not, esp after 9 days, is another strong indicator that the person running the show is not up to the task.
While I shouldn't be, I am a little shocked there are people in the comments supporting musk's actions in this incident and seem to have problem whatsoever with him publicly mocking an employee's disability and likely violating HIPPA laws, esp when the employee was very respectful in how he presented the situation.

I quit Twitter in December. The reason I chose that direction had to do with how Elon Musk had been treating his employees in the wake of his purchase of Twitter. His 'hard-core work culture' in my opinion is nothing more than the creation of a sweat shop in the US. Seeing employees sleeping at Twitter offices exemplify this. So too is this particular event that has just transpired on Twitter. I thought to myself back in December that as a customer of the site, how can I look myself in the mirror and justify being a customer and condone the sweat-shopping of the Twitter work-force. At that point I quit. Might add also almost quit the internet and social media all together because I really felt disenchanted with the whole thing. Presently writing an essay about my own concerns about the internet and social media, which this event just adds as ammunition to fire. I am still very disenchanted but finding a way to get this sentiment out there is a better way of dealing than simply walking away. Medium is a very good form of therapy.

I was extremely disillusioned in tech by 2004-2008 or so (especially once it emerged back then how greedy & fundamentally amoral so-called “quants” were indispensable to engineering the bubble that led to the crash). As far as the amorality that pervades so much of tech culture - at least Musk et al. are showing us how flagrantly stupid & narcissistic they are courtesy of Twitter whereas in the past it was easier to hide or minimize the bullshit of those in charge.

Apparently, several other news-related channels also covered this incident, and the biggest takeaway from them that wasn't included in this video is that Twitter still owes Hatti $100 million from selling his company to Twitter. The kicker is that in the sales contract, if Hatti's employment at Twitter is terminated, the remaining balance is due immediately. I suspect that when EM realized Hatti is THAT employee, musk was forced to backtrack and offered to rehire him. A hundred million dollars is likely to be a very impactful hit to any company losing half of its income from advertisers bailing, firing 70+% of its workforce to keep from going under, and the steep drop in its share price. I knew there had to a bigger reason than the possibility of a lawsuit for wrongful termination or HIPPA violation for musk to go straight from being cruel in multiple tweets to suddenly saying, "I apologize" and offer to rehire him. Obviously, musk was initially only informed that he had a disability and was fired. It was later that musk learned who the employee was. It sounds like whomever musk tasked with actually firing people and removing their login credentials, completely missed the "Do Not Fire" tag on Hatti's file and has a lot in common with Trump's "best people".

Then there's the whole lack of communication of whether he even had a job, and was terminated with no notice, I'm pretty sure that's illegal as well. The way things are heading, Twitter may end up in bankruptcy and it would be a shame if the debt to Halli is able to be included. There's a part to the story you missed (Vaush reported on this) and changed the end part of your story about him being paid on time.
When he talks about Elon paying him what he owes is that when his guy sold the company he founded to Twitter, rather than taking compensation in the form of stocks, he took it in the form of wages that Twitter would pay him over time. If, as has happened, Twitter fires him, then Twitter per their contract owes him all the rest of the wages at the time he's dismissed. In this case we're looking at Twitter owing the guy about 100 million dollars.
But what's more, the reason he didn't get word back from HR about his firing for a week and a half was because his employee file was marked with a special status that he was not to be fired, presumably for this exact reason. So when they had to try to answer the question of if he was fired or not, they really were in a tricky spot of not knowing how to answer.
And of course, being the idiot he is, Elon made these decisions without any foresight in the consequences. He didn't even both to have someone look into the contracts these employees were under, and now is in a rare situation for him where he has to now deal with the consequences of his stupid decisions.

It wasn't to relieve my chronic pain, it was so my nerves wouldn't die and cause me to be permanently paralyzed from the waist down. I also have a messed up immune system, I have had shingles three times and have an uncommon form of Lupus known as NPSLE, which for me meant seizures whenever my lupus wasn't in remission. I also have both of my meniscus torn in my right knee for the last decade, and have had ADHD, a hearing disorder and a speech impediment since birth. I don't want sympathy, I want the world fixed so having something happened that was completely out of your control doesn't mean you, your loved ones and your future descendants aren't destined to live in some form of poverty. Where I could get the resources to work at a job and keep being employed, Musk is proving what many disabled people have been saying all along, discrimination against disabled employees is alive and well, you just have a higher burden of proof than even a criminal court has. It's absolutely no surprised that every year too many people die waiting to hear back on whether or not they get disability, or that you could be profoundly disabled but it never really mattered, because you were denied before they even requested medical records. Or that disabled people give up on being employed due to the hostile working conditions while knowing they will be completely kicked off disability if they do work, so if they do lose their job they may die before they get their benefits reinstated.

That guy should sue Elon for Twitter itself. It's clear Musk can't run Twitter as a business competently, but I'm sure this guy could run it way better.

I'm so happy that I deleted my Twitter. I'm also happy that the person that harassed me on Twitter was ordered to remove every tweet about me and even videos taken from my own social media without my consent.

It's heartbreaking that people can be treated this way. To be fired this way, to be forced to discuss private information on a public platform.. This is why we need to add psychologically and emotionally sound to the standard of leadership and governance, along with a standard in place to address relational challenges. There is no raise, promotion or salary that can compensate for toxicity in the workplace. The human and medical fallout is insurmountable. We can do better than this.😥

Not only did Twitter buy his company, Thorleifsson took the $100 million as a salary from Twitter instead of an up front payment. So now Twitter will have to pay out the remaining amount.

We’ve all met Musk’s parents through the media and anyone can see that though he comes from wealth no one in the family has any manners and it doesn’t even appear that they possess normal emotions.

Now, he is in “damage control” mode. Elon that is.
