    When my dad was a young man, he was born in 1923, a manly item was a handmade bamboo fly rod. So naturally, when I graduated from High School, he bought me an Orvis Battenkill bamboo fly rod and Hardy reel. He said that I would have it my entire life, and pass it on to one of my children. My dad has been gone for over 25 years, though every time I go fishing, he is there with me!

    • @45auto82
      @45auto82 2 года назад +1

      My thots exactly, Tom. A nice pocketknife says you’re a man who’s better prepared than most and conveys a sense of responsibility and manliness. I think too, we should all have a larger knife, maybe a fixed blade, for outdoor activities. Not saying a Crocodile Dundee Noife…😎 but rather something with a strong blade maybe 3-4”.

    A Man should have a strong sense of Morals, Virtue and Faith. Being a Man goes way beyond simply having "Manly" stuff.

    • @gencorp1659
      @gencorp1659 2 года назад

      Morals are fluid between cultures and times, virtue is simply having a strong moral sense and faith is arguable depending on whether it is evidence based.

    • @hodog175
      @hodog175 2 года назад +1

      @Gen Corp so we are to change our morals as times change, so theft is Being made acceptable, poor behavior is being more and more acceptable. Disrespecting one another is becoming more and more acceptable. Are we supposed to change our morals based on what is being pushed by the media?
      Hebrews 11:1, KJV: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

    • @gencorp1659
      @gencorp1659 2 года назад

      @@hodog175 we already do. In biblical times it was no issue for a 30 year old man to marry an 11 year old girl. Do you think we should have stuck with that?

    • @hodog175

      @Gen Corp it still happens in the world, not just in biblical times.

  • @45auto82
    @45auto82 2 года назад +21

    Legend. I would add the following items to the list of manly things to own:
    1. A good quality hunting rifle, shotgun, and at least one pistol. And know how to use them safely and accurately.
    2. A high-quality pocket comb. Mine is a synthetic tortoise folding type from Gentleman’s Finest, made in Switzerland. Nothing says you can’t care about good grooming without being vain.
    3. On watches, it is my belief a real man shd have at least one very high-quality watch, something that is jewelry quality, Swiss-made, and that can go with the finest suit as well as any casual clothing without seeming too flashy. If you have to save up a couple thousand to get it so be it. Depending on just a cell phone for the time, to me, conveys that one is not concerned about time, man’s greatest ally or enemy, depending on his outlook.
    4. As mentioned above, I think every man should own a very high quality suit. Something that is of timeless design, custom-tailored to fit ones own body perfectly. It’s not something you use every day, but when you do need it, it should make a definite statement that puts you head and shoulders above the crowd. A good tailor can help with a style that fits all time periods and that will never go out of style.
    5. While you mentioned two wallets, one everyday and another, I choose to have as my secondary, a man’s secretary-type wallet that should only be carried in a suit or sport jacket breast pocket. These wallets should be made of very high quality leather, have plenty of currency and card slots, and can be personalized with initials in gold. Nothing speaks of class and style at a cocktail party or semi-formal event like a wallet that is understated but at the same time classy.
    6. Last but not least, every man who wants to make a lasting, good impression should own at least one very nice writing instrument. There are many brands and styles, ballpoint/fountain/rollerball so something for everyone. I know for some younger men they’d rather just use their phone to make notes or record something but I believe being able to pull out a nice pen to write something down conveys a sense that it (whatever is being written) is important enough to warrant special attention. Ahem…maybe also a small leather note pad? It’s convenient to have paper in case you need to pass a note to one of the opposite sex when you don’t yet know their phone number, or they yours.
    That’s all I have John! Hope this helps.

    • @kelvinhorton6983
      @kelvinhorton6983 2 года назад

      Yes kitchen knives are good but not necessarily a set. Just 3 chosen with care is enough and maybe a couple more depending on your style of cooking. Have the equipment and skill to keep them razor sharp and some way to store them. I have a counter top magnetic holder made of walnut. It's about caring about and caring for your kitchen equipment not necessarily matching sets.

While I have packed a Swiss Army Knife in my "Business Bag" every day or the last 40 years, and being a Salesman in the Computer and Telecommunication Industry I have used every blade and tool. But the most useful knife that I own is a very small knife that fits onto my key holder, which it is always with me. It has solved so many problems that I consider such a small knife to be priceless. Living in Minnesota, it's essential to have certain items in your car. Between the months of August and June, I keep a metal shovel, jumper cables, some basic tools, a tow strap, heavy duty winter clothes, and a fairly extensive first aid kit.
    If I come upon an accident, or a simple "break down", I don't want to be one of those "guys" who doesn't even have an ice scraper. Not very "manly". : )

      Garrison Keilor once said that in Minnesota, once August hits, you better have an ice scraper in your car. Otherwise, your neighbors will see you trying to scrape off the ice with your credit card and accuse you of not really being from there.

    • @billj5645
      @billj5645 2 года назад

      I agree with the basic gear. We have some parts of the country where ice scraper and winter clothes would not be needed but everywhere in the country there is a need for a small tire pump and jumper cables or these days even a rechargeable jump starter. And of course you have to know how to use those items. Lastly this is not an item you can buy and carry with you but have the knowledge to change a spare tire. Over the years jump starting cars, changing tires and airing up tires has helped me continue on my journey as well as rescue someone else who needed help. Automotive tools were mentioned and although I don't carry them all the time, in the past when I've carried them I've had occasion to use them to rescue myself.

    I loved my watch winder but I don't use it anymore. I learned that running a mechanical watch wears it out sooner. Let it run down and stop if you aren't going to wear it for a week or a month. Resting it will increase it's intervals between servicing. Some inexpensive automatic watches such as Seiko 5 cannot be hand wound so temptation is to put them on a winder. Don't buy automatic watches that cannot be hand wound. Many, if not most micro brands use the NH35 movement that can be hand wound. Ironically that movement is made by Seiko but they don't use it in their own watches.

    Legend. I own many of these, but picked up a few good ideas also. Most of my shave gear is Art of Shaving, including straight razor and strop, as well as safety razor. One exception is that I actually like Trufit & Hill shaving oil a little more- nice citrus scent and not so viscous (art of shaving is Camphor based). And a little goes a long way. I also have bunch of tools - work on my Cherokee off and on, as well as occasional house work. Thanks again for a great video.

    Legend - Another excellent list with two thumbs up on 9 out of 10. The only misstep is regarding cigars. If you must indulge then a humidor is indeed manly, however, you must realize that after smoking you will reek of the stench of cigar smoke. Hardly manly. In the next video you will be talking about wearing the right cologne. Pick one. Stink or smell great. You can't have it both ways.

    Legend but I think a first time poster. Agree with the tools but you should absolutely mention one by name - a good screwdriver set and TAPE MEASURE! Cant tell you how many times I have been asked for help while at a friends/associates house and the tape measure/tool set they have are complete crap. Stanley fat boy and a decent set of tools! Just watch for a sale at Home Dept/Lowes/Ace - whatever! Husky, Milwaukee (love them!), Gear Wrench, whatever! I still have my old sets from back in the day. Also, put together a "Aww Snap!" kit. I and my friends still have little ones around. Put together a kit that has Band-Aids (different sizes), a DECENT quality light (runs on rechargeable batteries - and NO! Your cell phone doesn't count), handwarmers, ice pack, ibuprofen, hand wipes, plastic gloves (noticed I have that plural), pack of Neosporin, etc. I'm not talking about a SHTF, Book of Eli type bag/kit. Just something to have when life could throw you a curve ball or two.

    Think the art of manliness depends on the person and a state of mind plus where you are in the world. I came from the UK where having a big dog was the sign of being a man. Now I live in the Mediterranean and men carry lapdogs and to be fair it is difficult to look manly in pink shorts. Might be an idea what 10 items men and women around the world think are manly, great video and keep up the good work.

    Question off topic if you have time John;
    I wear a white collar uniform dress shirt daily for work and have ring around the collar constantly! I could go through a new shirt every week,
    however they frown on that, and maybe get one every 3 months. Can’t bleach it due to logos, and I am a very clean,so it’s not a matter of being freshly showered or clean. Any ideas/solutions? 🙏🏽

    I’ll never understand the association of watches or a watch collection with manliness. They are a waste of money, but if you like watches, whatever floats your boat.
    I haven’t worn a watch in over 15 years because they aren’t needed. It’s a personal codpiece.
    You don’t need to wear one to be stylishly dressed, no one is going to think you’re somehow more “manly” just cuz you’ve got a piece of expensive hardware on your wrist. Probably has an advantage in a boardroom or similar situation. But whether you belong in a boardroom will be obvious from a host of other factors about your appearance and demeanor.
    If you’re Joe Shmoe McDadBod, no amount of wrist bling is going to fool anybody that you’re somehow “manly” because of it.

    These personal items your mentioning, watch display case, french cuffs, candles, and briefcase are all manly but on the gentleman's side of the spectrum. And then you have the other end of the spectrum. Brawny and tough kinda guy. Where is that list? You know..... like owning an electrical tool from the garage, having construction boots (for style or for work) owning any type of workout equipment and last but not least owning a bat (whether it be a sports memorabilia or a self defence item. I sit somewhere in between brawny and a gentleman's kinda guy and I feel you missed your target on this one.
