Santa is abandoned, but there are numerous still populated Greek speaking villages in Trabzon province. :) Mostly in the Tonya area, and in the eastern districts. And the Greeks didn't start to leave in the 19th century due to inter ethnic problems. Actually the opposite, ironically. During the Tanzimat, the privileges granted to different groups were revoked, and now every citizen had to pay taxes. Also muslims and people in mining communities. But life was hard in the mining towns, so many people left to find work elsewhere. In fact during this period the population of this region (Matzouka, Gumushane) for the first time felt the freedom to re-assert their Christian belief (many families had officially registered as Muslims in the centuries before). Most of the local people remained in the area until the population exchange in 1923.

I have not visited the Tonya area, but it's good to know about the Greek villages.
Yes, I read the mining towns began to die down and did not understand for what reason.
