This is wonderful. A really interesting interview, and alongside that it's a joy to see two people discussing som thing their knowledgable and passionate about. Everytime one of you said an evocative phrase that was new to and resonated with the other was a brilliant joyful moment 💜💜💜
As art goes, I think my favorite anime is Grimgar. It's done beautifully, with good but standard animations on the forefront but all of the backdrops and still peices are done in a watercolor style and it just stirs up such a deep nostalgia that I can't even make sense of it
Guys I just had a great idea for combat. The grid is not squares, ITS DIAMONDS! It fixes so many problems if you start normal encounters on the diagonal instead of in-line. When you make a diagonal move cost 5 feet, it means that nobody can tank cos a monster can just sidestep you for no cost and run into your backline. But if you start on the diagonal, you can block the enemies effectively. It also means the most quickest and bravest way to attack the enemies always puts you in the middle of them, in the most danger as it should. If you want to sneak around the flank, it now costs extra movement. You can fix this also by making a diagonal move cost 1.5x movespeed, but the maths is way messier than just turning the whole board 1/8th. FORTY FIVE DEGREES LETS THE MARTIALS IMPEDE, PASS IT ON
I think Son of the White Mare (1981) might be the movie Emily was thinking of. Cold War era Hungarian animation was reliably buckwild, if anyone needs a dose of true strangeness in their life
Not ever seen that one! Are you referring to the russian folk tale book I was talking about? Not sure. Anyway, no I haven't seen this one so I will seek it out, thank you! The russian book was 'Heroes, monsters and other worlds from russian mythology'. :)

In any case, it's definitely worth seeking out; there was some really wild surrealist work coming out of the Hungarian film industry at that point, and Son of the White Mare was a really striking and personal-feeling adaptation of that Slavic folktale.
Did the best part of this interview get lost in the ether? Probably. Do I expect anything different? Absolutely not. It just means there is something to look forward to. Maybe one day I'll travel to the ether 🤷🏼♂️
