Alex I suggest you to move to Toulouse, it’s the mellowest «big city» in France, cause it really doesn’t feels like one. It’s equal distance from the Atlantic and the Mediterranean coast so you’re like, 3 hours away by car from Biarritz. I really don’t think you should move directly to Biarritz or Hossegor cause besides surfing, there’s not much to do there, just drinking wine on the balcony of your villa looking at the sunset. I feel like after a certain time you’ll lose your mind, that’s at least the impression I had when I went there. That’s why I think Toulouse will be the perfect fit for you, since you’re used to living in New York, you’ll still get the feeling of beeing in a pretty busy city. Plus we have a good skate scene here on the contrary to those beach cities and you’ll be able to go surf there whenever you want. I sent you a DM on insta with more info
Bummer to hear there were arguments about the footage that ended up being 'Swoosh' ... that one line at Republique is seriously one of the best of all time (half cab flip, noseblunt, 360 kickflip [body with board], nollie heel, back 180, fakie backtail, frontside halfcab)
I can listen to Alex talk all day. I’ve always looked up to this dude he’s right though in the 2000s Baker was huge and they were hitting rails non stop
Great interview! Always respected alexs views and opinions. Let alone the dudes skating. One of the best. F A is rad. Lifestyle branding notwithstanding. Only 45 minutes in. Lol. Keep the content coming Lee!
Right?! haha I feel like that's a huge missing fact of skating from 2011-2013 that a lot of us never heard about. Very interesting to see both palace and FA are dominating rn while companies like Girl and alien workshop are washed up
Alex dissed Australia, called it 5 years behind. I would be offended but I have to go take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, catch the premiere of OverVert, and discuss the dissolution of Derrimut from the Victorian Legislative Assembly.
Crazy how Alex was such a skate prodigy back in the day that companies were falling over themselves trying to get him on yet he had no interest in pursuing them at all haha He was also mentored by Ed Templeton and Mike Carroll.
Really enjoy these but dude needs to lower the ad amount. Many people don’t watch, but listen. To have six ad breaks with three ads each in first 35 minutes is nuts.
Dude!!!! Staba is awesome. I would have loved to see RUBY become this awesome thing...Alex would have been the best fit for that and even though it never "happened" I would have and still back the idea! Good interview!
This is the first time I'm watching an episode and I must say to me this was pretty frustrating. I was excited about another Alex Olson interview because I like his approach to skateboarding, the skateboard industry and life itself. I think he's honest and humble and distinct. I wasn't hoping for an "edgy" interview by any means but almost everything the interested listener was listening to in those 2 hours he's already heard in previous interviews. Lee Smith seems like such a likeable person and a good sort but to me he seems so held back and insecure about his approach. To me, this interview joins the ranks of the same type of "getting to the bottom of things" but actually just angsty beating around the bush. I assume it also depends on the person being interviewed but that's why it seemed so frustrating to me because I've got the feeling that Olson would really give the other person a platform to talk openly. Even Olson jokingly said "what? that's it?" I took it like he meant it because to me it felt exactly like this.
“like like like you know like like and like like so like I like like like like and then like like kinda like like the like like then like like like like like like like like because like....like yeah like.”
"lets talk about your hiphop song, which one?" This one ;) kiricks.bandcamp.com/track/a-nice-place-to-visit-feat-lee-smith bet you havent heard this in a while. Only old bcn heads know about this one
yo re: vegans at 1:19 "eastern cultures are way more vegetarian/ vegan" try living in Indonesia yo....three years deep going on 4 it would be hard...this is where tempeh is from, but despite that other than the rampant amounts of tempeh/ tahu, if you say no meat it means "chicken is chill". I'm not vegetarian or vegan, but it is far easier in the US. Treasure the freedoms of living n the free world. Here you have to choose between a handful of modified monotheisms on your ID (Balinese Hinduism is nationally modified)...you can't even choose Judaism because of international tensions between that and Islam.
Great interview but please stop talking under your breath. It can be a bit frustrating when you are trying to watch the interview. Just edit out the “off camera” comments later.
Americans apparently work too hard, yet they invented the pastime skateboarding and spent the leisure time to take it to its limit. So hip to criticize the U. S.
Great conversation
the best skate podcast currently out. Thanks for what you do for the culture.

Gosh I couldn’t stop staring at Alex’s duckhunting shoes. Great episode. great dude.
Alex’s laugh 😆 is the funniest. Great convo ❤️
His laugh reminds me of David Brent, when he says something that makes himself crack up laughing. . Sound of pure glee.

I live in NYC and was dating a girl from Toulouse for a while. She was super fucking rad, so you have my cosign .
This host dude giggles a lot 😆

That 360 kickflip alone is one of the best ever IMO
chapter2unit4 hey I happened to miss this and wondered if you knew the time stamp on it
chapter2unit4 completely agree
I had to go back and watch swoosh before I started watching this, those lines are perfect
That line and the time right there when 917 was brand new is some of my fav skating ever. All of Johnnys edits from that time... incredible.
Episode was awesome!!! Keep up the amazing content Lee!

I would argue that Baker was more of a flip Trick down big sets company

right on Lee. Good Stuff !!
Cool! You should get decent mics though
It’s more the space than the mics. He could try to kill the reverb with treatment or kill it in post. Looks cool though! ;)

No disrespect to Aidan, who I like to watch skate, but 917 is loaded with power/finesse riders, which he isn't.
