    What do you think about this set? Are you excited about it? What new cards slot in perfectly to your existing commander decks?

    • @thriftypsgr
      @thriftypsgr 9 месяцев назад +3

      The precons are amazing. The set has several playable cards and is fun in sealed. The set works well. The set also doesn’t have a lot of high dollar cards. So for me, this set is great. I am newer to magic so getting good playable cards is more important to me than opening for value. I bought two of the precons for the same reason. They have sooo many usable cards. So this set is good depending on what you are looking for.

      I get kind of annoyed when I hear y'all putting down some cards, because your complaints basically amount to: "it's not fast enough" or "it's not cheap enough" or "I want more for less".
      And this is while everyone is already upset that the format is getting too fast which Josh even mentioned at the beginning of the episode.

      I found the Archdruid's Charm to slot perfectly into my Zaxara deck. Zaxara itself can generate 2 green mana making it a lot easier to cast, and targetting zaxara with the +1/+1 counter mode is just a straight up removal. However I use it as a tutor to fetch whichever creature I need, mainly a wincon in the form of Agumented Pugilist//Echoing Equation

    @ 53:13 Rachel is wrong about the imposter counters, if you move them to a new creature and that creature dies, you do get the effect again assuming illicit masquerade is still on the battlefield. The enchantment is checking for the counters when things die. However, if someone removes the enchantment they start doing nothing no matter how the counter was put on there

      Right, imposter counters are like charge counters; no inherent rules associated with them, so the enchantment needs to still be in play for them to “work”, but they are absolutely compatible with an Ozolith or a Nesting Grounds.

  • @OrcaneVault
    @OrcaneVault 9 месяцев назад +41

    53:16 pretty sure this is incorrect for illicit masquerade and interactions with cards like the ozolith. While it’s true the “imposter counter” has no abilities tied to it, as long as the illicit masquerade is on the battlefield it will trigger whenever a creature with that type of counter dies. Doesn’t matter where the counter came from, it just needs to named “imposter counter”.

      Any two-one color deck will be able to run this perfectly fine even if your deck only has 2 really good land targets. It answers literally anything, exiles The One Ring and allows you to find a Nykthos/Ancient Tomb at instant speed. If your deck is running Crop Rotation, Archdruid is probably gonna be even better.
      EDIT: I am currently playtesting it in a Simic Gale list, and being able to cast this from the greveyard at a later turn seems really great. Obviously it won't be great in every deck, but most can run it without feeling like a waste of a slot.

      Ya I think their take on this is totally wrong. It can work in most decks with good mana bases and/or has a good amount of treasure generation. It can literally be or go get an answer to any problem you have. It’s removal or ramp on its own and can go tutor any creature if you need card advantage. Archmage charm is not a good comparison because it’s modes are not nearly as flexible and this basically has an extra mode with the first one actually being two options

  • @grimbeefers
    @grimbeefers 9 месяцев назад +13

    My anecdotal experience with Archdruid's Charm is very different than the lukewarm reception it got here. For me, this card is bonkers. I'm slotting it in as upgrades to existing artifact / enchantment removal. It's a real powerhouse card, and a significant enhancement, as your options are just so wide. The instant speed tutoring is just nuts, in G. I don't think any other color can tutor any land into play at Instant speed, and even G only has a handful of options to do this, with Crop Rotation requiring you to sac a land, and risk getting blownout as a result. It's also great that it exiles the One Ring, and other combo pieces, like Heliod.
    Again, I think the thing to not overlook is that this card only has good modes, and it's the niche filler on modal cards that usually makes them read better than they are. This isn't one of those worthless Zendikar Inscriptions.

    My understanding of illicit masquerade is that you can in fact return some of the creatures that died in the example of a board wipe because they all go to the cemetery and trigger so you could stack the triggers in a way that the last brings the first etc.

    • @MrFierygrave
      @MrFierygrave 9 месяцев назад

      Yes since the exile effect doesn't happen until the ability resolves, you can stack them in a way to save all but 1 creature (and get something else instead).
      Creatures A,B,&C of yours die at the same time. You resolve A's masquerade trigger first its exiled, you bring back B. B's trigger resolves next, its no longer in the graveyard so nothing to exile, bring back C and resolve its trigger to bring back another creature that was already in the graveyard. Its because its not a replacement effect but a separate trigger, dauthivoid walker for example says instead, this does not!

    I have a Boros Angels deck, and Demand answers is actually not replacing Tormenting Voice or Thrill of possibility, but rather Faithless looting. Only discarding 1, and being net 0 at the end is better than discarding 2 and down 1 at the end. It's not a graveyard deck, so having flexibility to do card OR artifact is very helpful.

    I made the realization this video that Insidious Roots is absolutely insane in Tayam. It makes creatures tokens, which get a vigilance counter from your commander; it makes a ton of +1+1 counters for Tayam to consume; it's a 2 mana enchantment, so Tayam can recur it; and Tayam likes to do lots of small reanimation, which is probably the best way to trigger it. The card is so uniquely perfect for Tayam that the plants being mana dorks is just pure gravy, which is kinda insane. Definitely going to pick up a copy.

    Suppressor Skyguard is one of my fave cards as an Azorius player. It's perfect in my sort of Human/Human Soldier tribal deck that has a HEAVY pillowfort subtheme (protection from noncombat damage and Ghostly Prison effects). But it should be noted that, unlike those effects, the player CAN still attack you and get their attack triggers it just won't deal combat damage. So...if all they need to do is get an attack trigger to trigger some other effect that can advance their wincon, then it definitely goes without saying that Suppressor Skyguard is best played with other pillowfort effects. But I do love the added political dimension of this card! I love the idea of putting someone in a tricky situation where, if they want to hurt me at all, they have to risk pissing off the rest of the table LOL Azorius til death I guess haha

    For slime against humanity reyhan, last of abzan is interesting because it put +1 counter of a dying creature on other creature . With a sac outlet only one ooze attacking can suddenly be a big ooze by which can create interesting combat choice, It has partner so slurrk, all-ingesting can double the fun by putting the +1 counter on other creature.

    Insidious roots goes in Tayam, Luminous Enigma decks. Tayam is already pulling cards out of your graveyard and needs counters to consume to do it. After doing that three times it become free. Also you are making Mana dorks at the same time. It's in consideration for CEDH Tayam decks. But yah that's a neesh fill. But yes there already is a deck that can use it.

    I think Expedited Inheritance would be really good in an erage deck/fight deck. Like Brash Taunter, Dinosaurs, or Vrondiss Rage of Ancients etc etc. You would be double impulse drawing if the brash Taunter fought your own creatures.... I think its pretty good!

    I built a slimes deck with shadowheart/master chef as commander.
    It's a pretty amusing deck. Cooking up slimes to draw a ton of cards which gets more slimes and pretty soon your self milling slimes via massive card draw so you sculpting a hand while doing it.

    You gain advantage from expedited inheritance through tempo. If your opponent has a full grip and high average cmc, giving them 5 impulse draw is less useful than giving yourself 5 impulse draw with less cards in hand and a lower average CMC.

    Insidious roots is honestly good just for turning creature tokens into mana dorks. If you can actvate the second part with things like scooze or other single card graveyard removal, it seems like a fun engine.

    I pulled an archdruid charm and decided it was probably a pretty good include in my Volo, Guide to Monsters deck. Triple green doesn’t seem that difficult to pull off in simic, and the ability to go get any relevant utility lands, such as Nykthos, Field of the Dead, Yavimaya, Mystic Sanctuary, Mosswort Bridge, Maze of Ith or Castle Garenbrig is a big deal to me since you can’t get that effect with Primeval Titan as it’s still banned.

    my interpretation of secretly voting is that it differs from a card like expropriate where players take turns voting. Everyone can talk about what should be done as the spell is resolved, and after each vote plyers sometimes will talk about how the next player needs to vote for x or y respectively. The voting secretly i handle similiar to voting in a game like secret hitler where players talk about voting yes or now to nominate someone as chancellor but then then players go silent and put out a face down vote card, then reveal them all at the same time to find the result. So in this case with the new card I would talk about how we should all vote, but then each player can decide to vote how they want secretly

    I think for Slime Against Humainty the best commander might be Shalai and Hallar. It gives them pseudo haste + unblockable, cause it shoots for each +1/+1 counter. Also Slimes are amazing with token doubles, instead of one 12/12 you make two or three.

    Rachel is definitely the best thing thats happened to this show. I kinda tapped out of CZ for a while as it had just gotten stale for me and I got tired of the over-the-top acting/reactions in the game play. Rachel was who brought me back into the fold. And now that you're looking at adjusting certain show formats there are more things keeping it fresh. Dont be trapped by your success, gotta jeep changing to stay interesting and relevant. Still not in love with the campiness of live games but it seems Im in the minority there, so I'll just continue to be selective in CZ content I watch/listen to.

    Mob Verdict really needs flash. It would be hilarious at the end of an end-step, for the entire table to "vote" on a player's actions. Can be done, but pity the card doesn't have it by default.
    Supressor Skyguard is like a nearly omni-present fog, that dies to removal. But wow. It helps people dislike your opponent.

    Second comment: Rachel and JLK seem to be wrong about moving imposter counters. While an "official ruling" about imposter counters can be moved has yet to be made, I did find this actual ruling:
    Card Ruling: Illicit Masquerade
    2/2/2024: Illicit Masquerade's last ability affects all creatures you control with imposter counters on them, not just ones that had imposter counters put on them with Illicit Masquerade's second ability.
    This seems to imply that if a creature ETBs after Illicit Masquerade is already on the battlefield, and an imposter counter is put on it, the enchantment still affects any creatures that ETB after Illicit Masquerade has already been on the battlefield. Thus, I would say that if you can move an imposter counter, since the card itself uses the word "counter," then cards like Nesting Grounds or The Ozolith actually can affect imposter counters, since calling something a "counter," but not actually being a counter, like a hexproof counter, seems both counter-intuitive and a bit disingenuous from Magic R&D to me, because if an imposter counter isn't actually a counter, that is just making things more confusing, not less.
    Edit: I found the following in the Comprehensive Rules. The numbers in the following text, followed by a colon, are the rule itself in the Comprehensive Rules:
    Rules Regarding Counters
    122.1: A counter is a marker placed on an object or player that modifies its characteristics and/or interacts with a rule, ability, or effect. Counters are not objects and have no characteristics. Notably, a counter is not a token, and a token is not a counter. Counters with the same name or description are interchangeable.
    122.5: If an effect says to "move" a counter, it means to remove that counter from the object it's currently on and put it onto a second object. If either of these actions isn't possible, it's not possible to move a counter, and no counter is removed from or put onto anything. This may occur if the first and second objects are the same object; if the first object doesn't have the appropriate kind of counter on it; if the second object can't have counters put onto it; or if either object is no longer in the correct zone.
    122.6: Some spells and abilities refer to counters being put on an object. This refers to putting counters on that object while it's on the battlefield and also to an object that's given counters as it enters the battlefield.
    122.8: If a triggered ability instructs a player to put one object's counters on another object and that ability's trigger condition or effect checks that the object with those counters left the battlefield, the player doesn't move counters from one object to the other. Rather, the player puts the same number of each kind of counter the first object had onto the second object.
    This being said, this definitively proves that IMPOSTER COUNTERS actually CAN BE MOVED from a creature to The Ozolith, or moved from one creature to another with Nesting Grounds.
    For The Ozolith Players: The Ozolith notably does not actually move counters to it, but rather, you put _the same kind and type of counter_ on The Ozolith when a creature with a counter on it dies. This includes imposter counters.
    For Nesting Grounds Players: As I have shown, you can in fact move imposter counters from one creature to another with Nesting Grounds' activated ability.
    Conclusion: *_JLK and Rachel are wrong about not being able to move imposter counters._*

    another thing to consider that makes Smuggler's share so much worse than Trouble in Pairs: Monarch.
    Monarch draws on end step, after Smuggler's share has checked your number of draws and thus doesn't draw. Trouble in Pairs draws you that card every time, even better when your table keeps moving that monarch in turn order.

    I don't think Reenact the Crime was given enough credit here, as it can really shine as a Mizzix's Mastery: you discard or mill a huge sorcery and play it at a discount. Those effects are rare, and getting another one is a huge boost for a blue-red deck that wants to do that.

    Illicit Masquerade: 51:38
    Why can't you get back one of the other creatures that died at the same time as another? It only exile as the ability rezolve. Yes, you won't get the 1st creature's trigger. If you stack all the triggers right, you should get all but 1 back.
    Why can't you move those counters around (with ozolith) and still work? The enchantment just looks for if the creature has the kind of counter on it, when it died. It doesn't get the recursion effect when putting the counters on through its ETB. It doesn't say "for as long as it has an amposter counter on it ..."
