I looked forward to seeing this film 4 months ago when I saw the first trailer. My wife and I hadn’t been on a date in a long time so I offered her a movie and dinner afterwards. She looked at the trailer and said this was something she really didn’t want to see. I told her that was fine , we could see another movie, and told her I would go see it myself. She told me she wanted to go to the movie with me. I gave her no fewer than 20 chances to say no to this movie. After the movie, she was angry with me and asked “Why would you take me to see such a movie?!” That said, I liked it (I could even say I loved it) but I didn’t enjoy it. I’m glad I saw it, but I never want to see it again. It truly frightened me. Worse than any horror movie ever could. I truly fear something like this is what the United States is headed for. One scene I found particularly interesting was the opening scene where “The President” (I don’t think they ever named him) is shown from the side. He had a turkey neck/double chin thing that if you imagined him in silhouette looked a lot like Donald Trump. However, he had a hard time “putting two sentences together” like Joe Biden. In that sense, I saw him kind of as a hybrid character. One of the things that truly frightens me is there are people who wouldn’t mind if “their favorite president” was “elected” to a third term. One example of this is one person on Facebook was advocating for the reelection of Barack Obama. Many people on Facebook pointed out the 22nd amendment to him. This person put up further posts that were clearly indicative that he knew nothing about the constitution. I pray to God this never happens (again) As an amateur historian I read of the carnage in the first American Civil War. As a “Recovering New Yorker” who has spent most of my life in Florida since age 13 I encountered many southerners who proclaimed “THE SOUTH WAS RIGHT!” I’ll close by saying that my real fear is if another Civil War occurs half of the military and police departments will side with the government while the other half of the military and police department side with the people. If that happens (as portrayed in this horror movie) we won’t know who the enemy is.

As a retired newspaper guy, I loved this movie for its portrayal of journalism. As an American, I love it as a warning about the chaos that would ensue if our democracy were to fail. I think you hit the nail on the head here. Alex Garland made the right choice in framing this film in a non-partisan way and leaving the events and reasons resulting in this civil war vague. As viewers, that allows us to fill in the background for ourselves if we choose to do so. But it also makes clear that this is something no sane person should want (realizing that sanity itself sometimes seems to be slipping away). If we wish to avoid any chance of descending into a real-life bloody social conflict, we need to find a way to stop hating and come together in whatever ways we can.

This movie is actually EXTREMELY partisan and the prez leans towards what Trump was supposed to be like if he won a second term.
Liberals thought of him as someone who would abolish amendments to get his 3rd term dictatorship. Which they shown in the film.
The abolishment of the FBI and Charlottesville prepping scene was definitely a shot at Trump
The parallels of the film's president beefing with southern states(longtime establishment southern Republicans) under Florida governor was the most obvious dig at Trump too.
Definitely Partisan. Let's end that farce of a narrative

Trumps most solid support is in the South. Texas opposed certifying the obvious farce of an election in 2020. They wouldn't rise against Trump. Nor would Florida, which just voted for Trump overwhelmingly in the primary.
The only area solidly under the President's control in the movie was the Northeast.

Even though a civil war takes place in a single country, it’s violence is multiplied. People will turn on neighbors that they may have liked, or may have hated, they’ll use the civil war as an opportunity. It’ll require swift mobilization of men and brutal tactics to win, violent, disgruntled young men will use this as an opportunity. In places like Bosnia you can find memorials where battle or atrocity occurred, bodies will be hung on freeways, remnants of skyscrapers will remain, and bullet-scarred streets and walls will taint our once pristine society

@@karimbennett5651I think the lack of context is a deliberate choice. By presenting the story (i.e. facts), in their original form without context/framing/bias, it allows the viewer to fill in the blanks for themselves. Note, this is what journalism should be, without partisan spin. In giving the viewer the space to add in their preconceived notions or political views, it acts like a mirror. I went in watching this with a certain expectation and saw what I wanted. In watching other reviews, I think going in a second time with the other perspective would then reinforce that. I’m excited to give it a shot.

This movie has many messages and some may say it's about being woke. That's the point and that the good thing. For example the sniper scene is revealing. People we consider non violent had to take up arms to protect themselves. The woman in the store being complacent. The soldier killing people who aren't considered American even when people who look like him are in the mass grave. The world relief workers who could have came from another country to render aid. People of color finding shelter and helping others even though they could have been targeted. 300 Canadian dollars having more value that the American dollar. California and Texas have more in common than most people think. Again the movie should make people think twice about their petty differences.

Alright so I just saw Civil War the second time. The reason why I saw it the second time, was of all the poor reviews saying it was a snooze fest and it was boring.
I stayed awake during the two viewings. And I think the point is quite clear why they’re at war it’s brief but it’s clear and it ends up of the audience to decide why are they are in a Civil War.
The messaging I got from this film was that: In a civil war like this, people are going to take advantage and just be physcos. Also War is hell, and hopefully we shouldn’t be on this path.
Think people whom are saying it was garbage I feel like really rely on gunfire, explosions, and big budget films that’s on cocaine.
This film wasn’t bad, should’ve it been better? Yeah. Feel like there should be a little bit more to explain.

It’s the press war photographers who endure terrifying violence but come back from their PTSD for more, drawn to the horror of war like moths to flame. It’s not about civil war at all - it’s about a hero (the chosen one) whose power to save humanity requires that she sacrifice (separate) her own humanity. She can no longer remember why she is a hero. She is eternally trapped in her role as hero. Though her hell is eternal - she can only pass it along. She meets her “replacement” and so begin the journey of passing the torch - as our dead human hero get’s relieved by the still alive younger version of herself. We watch as the chosen one passes her hero - and in the transposition is given back her humanity (by being forced to talk about her origins) (being forced to smile) (being forced to wear a dress). In her final assault on the White House - she gives up her hero prison shell she gets to cry and fee. Honest to the hero genre (twisted drama)- the hero who is only a hero because she gave up being human - can only escape (transfer he prison) by “not being dead” she has to be human (finally prevent the causality instead of film it) and in doing so “she escapes” yeah!!!! In death - in which it’s very action “kills the humanity” of the “now, no longer a live child. It’s so weird to me how people compare this to military movies when it’s really a re telling of the god father. The little girl is Micheal Corleone “she becomes the god father” The guy’s who get shot are Sunny. The God father is heavy older guy - and Pablo Escobar is The consigliere. Have you seen an A24 movie? They the Dave Mathew’s of movies. They disguise art house movies and all the masses to watch movies of substance. The reason it doesn’t make political military sense - is because it would distract from the story. However, they got lucky in the telling because - what causes civil war is nonsensical but real. It makes sense that they would intentionally muddy the logic. “What are you stupid?” We are trying to kill the person who is killing us - it’s irrelevant of which side we are on. Then comes the guy in the pink glasses “the rise of the sociopath war criminal” and of course the trump fantasy (that fits too) - beware of the narcissist fascist. A24 is amazing. Go see it and enjoy it.

The surviving winners of a war stand to gain immense wealth and power not possible otherwise which is why there are wars now, there always have been and always will be.
