Don't forget to drop back in after the image retention starts to be annoying. And do write down how long you use it and for what app/game at a time.
      Like Day 1, played game 1 for x hours. game 2 for y hours, game 3 for z hours...etc..
      Cheers
edit: The QD oled is the worst possible tech of oled as you can confirm by the latest Rtings info. The image retention is quick to appear and even with those reset steps to help it out, it still loses quite fast to the image retention / burn in.

I recently bought the G8 OLED after watching this review and monitoring the price for a while (pun not intended).
Price dropped, bought the monitor and I admit, it looked incredible. For the 3 minutes I used it anyway. The unit I bought had the most intrusive "coil whine" i've ever heard, slicing through my head with different levels of amplitude and frequency depending on what was sat in the middle of the screen. So just a small warning to anyone buying one, if this happens to you - RMA it immediately.

For anyone trying to decide I can at least speak to the OLED G8 a little. I've owned 3 of them now (in an attempt to resolve issues with each) and whilst the monitor is generally excellent I'm not sure I'd buy it in its current state. I won't talk about the monitor's positives because I feel the review already covers those.
My first one has the bug where the volume increases by 1 every couple of hours. It also has a bug where it wouldn't detect a DP signal when turned on. So to be clear on steps: If I shutdown my computer and turn the monitor off with the power button on the remote, then turn the PC and monitor on (order doesn't matter) it won't detect a DP signal. To fix this I have to change the input to something else entirely, wait 15s for the monitor to say there isn't an input detected, then flick back to DP. I sent it back hoping both issues would be resolved.
My second monitor did NOT have the volume bug, which is great. However, it also has the issues with DP signal. At this point I tried a HDMI 2.1 cable instead. HDMI does not have the wake up bug but on the latest Nvidia drivers it has an even worse issue where the screen goes black for 1-2 seconds every few minutes when playing games. This issue doesn't occur if you use an older Nvidia driver and set the panel colour to 12 bit (even though it doesn't support 12 bit). This is an unacceptable compromise to me because I'm often playing newest releases that require the latest Nvidia drivers, so I sent it back.
My third monitor also doesn't have the volume bug which is leading me to believe this was fixed on later monitor revisions, though it could just be luck of the draw. However, this monitor unfortunately also the same issues described above regarding DP signal and HDMI blackouts.
Overall it's a real shame because these little issues are tarnishing what would be an otherwise absolutely excellent monitor.

I think in ways that this review is a little bias. The DW is ridiculous with the G-Sync Ultimate! The HDR is on a completely different level. However, if you’re on console, don’t bother with it with not having HDMI 2.1. You will only be able to play at 100 FPS with the HDMI 2.0 and won’t get the 175 FPS as a PC with DisplayPort. To each their own but the DW is a beast and the extra $200 for their G-Sync Ultimate is where it’s at!

So far I'm really happy with it.
I did not even bother to connect the monitor to the internet (and will not do it till I may need a firmware update)
It is the best looking monitor I had so far.
Connectivity is really weak on this one at least when it comes to USB extra ports. (and micro hdmi is anyoing)
They also got some problems where sometimes a rainbow line appears on the bottom but thats fixable with software.
So in the end I will probably keep it unless more problems start to appear, pretty happy about the image quality but it had some other (solveable) problems that such an expensive monitor should not have imho.

Maybe it's just down to my individual setup/settings, but ever since I upgraded from a 2070 Super to a 6800 XT with the AW3423DW, I don't think adaptive sync is working fine nor properly. In most games at startup, the screen will flicker, the framerate starts quite low (say around 15-20) and would gradually go up to the max the system can in a span of a minute or two. In other games, espcially Fortnite, they would simply just crash after a while and will continue crashing until I disable adaptive sync, then it's fine. Also, there's a weird quirk (for lack of a better term) where I don't have the option to select a standard 16:9 1440p resolution without adding a custom resolution in the Adrenalin software.

Got my DWF two weeks ago and since I use it a lot for desktop work, the warranty from Dell can be a bit more reassuring. The feedback from Reddit seems to indicate that replacements are likely to be refurbed units so fingers crossed.
Not taking my chances tho. I’m using black backgrounds and hiding taskbars/desktop icons in Windows, menu bars and docks in Mac.
I use an Nvidia gaming laptop so the HDR1000 mode hack isn’t terrible for now. Hope Dell does fix it.
And with my luck, in Australia, JB HiFi just discounted the DW to basically the same price as the DWF from Dell. And Samsung just dropped the price of the OLED G8 here so it’s cheaper than the DW from JB. With that said, the DWF with the discounts from OzBargain was still slightly cheaper. And I’d still take the DWF for the warranty and full sized ports anyway.
Oh. And for PS5 users, despite only having HDMI 2.0, in Console Mode, I’m able to accept 1440p 60/120 HDR VRR. I was waiting for the MSI originally but I don’t think HDMI 2.1 is needed in this case since the PS5 is able to take full advantage of the monitor (sans 21:9 support)

Also I’m not forgetting the general QC issues that Samsung have had for years now, my last TV from them developed a cluster of stuck pixels, my partners Samsung flip phone broke within 3 months and my G8 not OLED got returned as it was so wobbly I couldn’t use it, Alienware and Dell in general are solid products with excellent QC and warranty. I expect what ever comes next from LG will also be excellent as I’m now on my third LG OLED and I’ve never had a single issue (apart from the icons rubbing off the remotes within 12 months).

I suspect its something that might develop over time, and really only noticeable when the room gets more on the quiet side. Would've loved a comparison to the "Philips Evnia 34M2C8600".
It seems to have a fan, but can be disabled(?)
It has Ambiglow: never had it, so can't comment, but some truly love it
It's the only(!) monitor that has some form of blur-reduction tech (and yes, that is still a thing even with OLED monitors) as for instance PRAD found out.

To those interested the original AW3423DW recieved 3 different firmware variants depending on time of purchase..
    You have firmware MB101

Unfortunately, it's hard to get an Alienware that doesn't have fine scratches and smudges on the panel which can be seen with a bright light or torch. It appears to be due to the way they are packaged for shipping. Would be good if you could inspect the monitors for such blemishes as part of your review. I had to return my DWF for refund due to this reason. Would love to know if the Samsung and MSI have similar issues.

    • @dinospumoni8255
      @dinospumoni8255 Год назад +1

Samsung doesn't have the issue because they apply a peelable screen protector in shipping. All my DWFs came scratched (exchanged multiple times for coil whine, never got a good one).
MSI doesn't have a screen protector either, so most likely will have the same issue as the AW.

@@dinospumoni8255 Thanks mate. I learnt that about the Samsung after watching an unboxing video. Crazy to think the other brands don't use the screen protector - it obviously doesn't affect sales enough so they can't be bothered fixing the issue. Incidentally I also had the coil whine with the DWF - I had to keep the lights enabled at the back, otherwise the whine was very noticeable. I'm getting a refund for the DWF and am waiting delivery of the Samsung G8. Fingers crossed.

@@greenjoyce3001 that's what I did, returned my DWF for the G8. It is dead silent, no coil whine and no fan noise as it doesn't have one.
Screen arrived in perfect condition too, not a single blemish even under bright lighting.
There are some issues though you should be aware of. The monitor will randomly fail to wake from sleep and it seems to lock up Windows when it does.
Some units also have a problem where the volume overlay will randomly pop up on screen without any input. My first unit did that, my second didn't.
Seems no one can make a perfect version of this panel.

@@dinospumoni8255 Great to hear you got a perfect screen, free of blemishes. 👍
Thanks for mentioning those issues. I did read about some of those, and consider them fairly minor, although the volume overlay popping up in the middle of a game could be pretty distracting. I can see why you'd ask for a replacement if it happened often enough. Hopefully a future firmware update can fix those issues.
On another matter - as a fellow enthusiast who is pedantic about their screen, how do you keep the panel clean and free of dust? I've never had a quality screen before so never bothered thinking about this, but this purchase has changed that. 😊 I recently purchased this product (Flawless Screen Cleaner Spray with Microfiber Cleaning Cloth) after reading some positive comments in a forum. Last thing I want is to make fine scratches on it by not cleaning correctly, so keen to hear if you do anything special. Cheers mate!

    • @dinospumoni8255
      @dinospumoni8255 Год назад +1

@@greenjoyce3001 I have a lot of experience with that. The best advice I can give you is try NOT to have to wipe the screen down with cloths/sprays if you can. So, keep fingers off the screen, try not to sneeze, or cough in the direction of the screen.
What I do when dust starts to build up is use an electric compressed air duster to blow off as much dust as possible. I use electric to save money on buying the canned ones. I think I bought one for like $30 off Amazon and I use that to remove as much dust as possible from the screen.
If there's some more stubborn dust or grime on it that doesn't come off with the air duster, then I'll extremely gently wipe the screen with a DRY microfiber cloth, I use the brand magic fiber (large sized ones) from Amazon as those are highly praised for high end camera equipment, and if those are good enough for cameras that cost thousands of dollars, it's good enough for the screen.
I try to avoid all sprays as much as possible because the coating on the QD-OLEDs screens tend to streak/smudge a lot with any liquids but if you do need to use some liquid, spray a little onto the fiber cloth, and as gently as you can, wipe off the grime in a circular pattern until you remove whatever was on the screen. I use this only for spot cleaning.
The spray I use is Calyptus Screen Cleaner, also from Amazon as it has no alcohol or ammonia which could damage screen coatings. I find it doesn't streak either, but glossy screens like the G8 will always have a bit of it, so as long as you wipe gently in a circular pattern it buffs right out without scratching.
TLDR: Try to keep hands off the screen, air dusters are your friend, only use spray + high quality fiber cloth as necessary for spot cleaning.
