The thing I love about Weckl the most is he's a heroic figure. He worked his butt off, with active goal setting and pushing himself out of his comfort zone to practice and to take risks to achieve his goal of being "the best drummer in the world", a goal he admits he had set as a child. He's not just raw talent. He worked hard to get where he is.

I love what you wrote . . . all of it.
Still love Dave in 2024! He has never declined as far as musicality is concerned. Knows exactly where to place his fills as opposed to just playing a lot of fast rudiments.

Just saw this. 8/2023.
Probably the best drumming video I've ever seen. I've seen tons of weckl and vinny videos, but this shows - despite his dick nature passed along by some in the community - Dave's willingness to share. And more importantly, despite his lack of technique back then. I loved him in the 80's Some 80's weckl is the very best. I'll always love him. But portions of this video clearly show his technical weaknesses yet his willingness to share the common language.
I enjoy this era of dave weckl because i can almost, sort of, comprehend what’s going on

This style of drum solo is played by many drummers these days, but Dave already nailed it back in 80's!

当時、行ってた楽器屋さんでこのビデオ貰いました。懐かしいです。僕の当時のセットほぼウエックルさんと同じでした。 パールのMXでしたけどｗ 今も実家にそのままおいてます。

A couple of times, after Dave says something and the interpreter translates all of it into Japanese, Dave kinda has a look on his face as if to say, "I said all that?!" Props to the interpreter for being able to remember everything that Dave says and then repeat it to the audience in Japanese.
I wonder why the Yamaha electronic drums never became as popular as the Simmons pads or the Roland pads. They sound pretty good here. Weckl himself didn't play Yamaha electronic drums on the first Chick Corea Elektric Band album. In the liner notes it says that he played Simmons drums and the Linn drum. I guess it wouldn't look good for him to play Simmons drums at a Yamaha drum clinic.
Thanks for sharing this on-of-a-kind video! Now Dave has gray hair like a lot of his early fans. Haha! When I went to college, I lived next door to a Japanese exchange student in the dorm. It was 1991-2. He loved Chick Corea, The Police, King Crimson, and other bands that I liked. He was from Osaka. I liked him very much. We became good friends during those nine months when we lived next door. Hard to believe it's been that long ago. I hope he's doing okay.

The young King groove magic for all too see. A little known fact also, in Japan there were huge queues at the hairdressers as 'the Mullet' became the must have hair style for trendiest 20 somethings. '

この年だったと思いますがX -DAYというヤマハの楽器イベントで彼のセミナーを見ました。
強弱の付け方が上手いなぁ、という第一印象でした。
その10年後位に確かマイクスターンのトリオだったと思いますが、そっちより最初に見た彼の方が凄かったなぁ、と言うのを覚えてます。

First heard of DW in '86. Huge inspiration in the time I was drumming. "Spur of the Moment", one of the first selections I heard his other-worldly, at the time, Playing. Thank you so much for posting this !

大阪会場でバイトしてたのですが、デイブの演奏をステージ袖でガン見させていただきました。フォームがめちゃくちゃ綺麗で本当に見応えがありました。美味しいバイトだったなあ。

今でも鮮明に、衝撃的ＨＨでしたよね！！！！！
素晴らしいＨＨで、歴史的組み合わせかと思います。
しかし
もう何十年も前の映像なんですよね.............
この頃から、コントロールされまくって、圧巻のプレーでした。
時折走ったりしてて！人間味も有って！

Very nice video. Interesting, he say "Yamaha Power Series", not Yamaha Recording.
If I recall he said once the recording custom bass drums lacked projection. I think he used the other line for the acoustic stuff with Chick.

この映像の一年位後に、「六本木PIT INN」で彼を観ました。若かったですねぇ、髪の毛フサフサで(笑)。昔は今程ジャズ・ミュージシャンの映像なんて頻繁に目にすることがなかったので、音は聴いていても風貌を見るのに間が空いていたりすると、ちょっとビックリすることがありました(苦笑)。個人的には、GRPグループ系のサウンドじゃない方が好きなので、昔より今の方が好きかな。
