- A video of me hunting Hen of the woods mushrooms in central minnesota and I stumble across 3 prime ones at the base of a dead oak tree. Followed by some pictures of a few other ones I found this year with different color variations.
Nice haul of hens. They are my favorite wild mushroom, as well.
I tried this for the first time last summer. I gotta say I've always been skeptical on trying new species from the wild but ohh my goodness if you cook it up right it is a straight up delicacy!
i felt like i was watching a sesame street episode when he counted out the maitakes slowly. this is a great video for young kids. they learn to count and you can send them out to hunt for 'shrooms!
iggy082 Thanks. My daughters love to go out with me!

Thanks for getting my eyes back on!!
Awesome beautiful find!
I looked all over for those in the woods and then one of my sons found several clumps near an old red oak stump right in our backyard! Yeah, we were talking and he put his foot on one clump and asked me, "Hey Dad, what's this?" My reply. "Something that I've been looking all over for." And yes they are quite good. We've tried morels, oyster mushrooms, parasol mushrooms and the hen of the woods and we're pretty fond of the hen and the morels. Haven't tried the chantrelles yet.
Chants taste amazing todd they are one of my favorite! Hens can be very hard to locate. it seems sometimes I will find a bunch or none for days

Hey 330, my wife fixes the hen of the woods by frying it in olive oil, fresh garlic, and a bit of salt and pepper. She freezes the morels by rolling them in flour, placing them on a baking sheet, and then , once froze, storing them in freezer bags. Take 'em out deep fry 'em and eat away!
They are like having morels in the fall , Delicious
When I was in 5th grade in the 1950's We havested "Hicory Chickens" That is what we called these. If I could get some of them now I will uses some of them to get a start. A start is what I call the begining bunch I would use to start growing them indoors. From then on I could repeat the process again and again. These a one of many mushrooms that can be made indoors.
Hi. I've not seen your channel before. Do you have videos about vacuum packinging and freezing? Particularly about how much the quality deteriorates over what time periods. Thanks for the video
Nice haul!
+MI Timberwookie Thanks pal!
Im going out in minutes!!! 39 Camper tagged you fellow Gander!!!! LOL!!! CHeers!!!
massive oak trees he said,,,,,,I Agree . I go to a local "city" owned park.( the trees aren;t timbered.) 2 guys can't touch hands around these trees. Man do they produce. I'm glad that most people are afraid of wild mush. Less competition for me
wow! hen of woods jackpot!
My dad used to call these cowsmugs 60 years ago
This was published Nov 16, 2014. Was that the day you found these? It's pretty cold in central MN by mid November.
No I found them in mid October but didn't upload it until November. Thank you for watching!
This Oak tree is good for making selfbow ,I hope it will not left to be rutten or goes to be as fuel burning wood
This tree is on DNR land and cannot be cut down or disturbed. So it will most likely end up rotting and falling down. Good news is the tree should yield mushrooms for years to come.
found 3 this afternoon took one home ,,, sauteed it with olive oil salt pepper and garlic,,, are they supposed to turn dark,, almost black when cooked,,,
these are fresh smart
garlic, fresh coriander, salt all in olive oil on the fire ;)
Can you tell me how to preserve is I have a bunch ready to be packed but I don’t know the best way to freeze them for the future.
Would you mind to tell me where to find them???
Lucky duck!
What part of Minnesota you can find the hen of wood mushrooms
Anywhere in MN. I'm in the northern part but have friends in the southern part that find them as well
I’m really love ❤️ to eat them
