I just had these for the first time last night and it was the most delicious , heavenly food ever !!! And ... along with it a tiny wild grouse. I roasted it all in a cast iron pan on the stovetop with butter and encrusted the grouse with my homegrown oregano and added the mushrooms at the end , sprinkled a little Utah Real Salt on it and felt so blessed .. oh my gosh !!!
Wow, that has got to be one of the most beautiful living things I've ever seen! Not just among the mushroom family, but any living organism. Just stunning!
This spring (2019) my son spotted a huge one up in the woods, so we went up to it.. I had never heard of chicken in the woods mushroom before, but he told me that they were suppose to be good to eat.. I picked 1/2 a plastic grocery bag full just to test. I checked the Internet first and that stuff sells for $25 / pound roughly, and suppose to taste a lot like chicken, which I'm not that fond of chicken, but it's free.. After cooking up a batch by flour batter and frying, it tastes a whole lot better than chicken does.. The next day I went out and got another 1/2 bag, but the bugs and dirt was starting to show.. I cleaned some, but left the rest in the bag in the refiig. and used it as I got to it. After about 2-3 weeks of eating, I noticed over that time period the mushroom taste was starting to decline from when it was fresh, but still edible.. Anyway, before we could eat it all, it started getting to the point that I had to throw some of it away, but we enjoyed it while we could.. The one he found was probably 4 to 5 feet across on a very large oak that had got blown over a few years back.. Later I did cut a lot of wood off the tree, but I had left about 3 to 4 feet that was connected to the root system that was sticking up out of the ground... I'm hoping that it will come back this coming spring...
They do, there's another guy who's a mixologist and Iger's a class. Don't want to promote another guy but he's so legit. Biologist & mixologist I think name is Chris carrington or Harrington
P.s. I do not blame you, man. I might have died instantly locking eyes with a score like that... and haunted anyone who found my skeleton next to that log... (ghostly now) “Doooood... you have nooo ideaaaa.”
PLEASE do not freeze this one! So perfect! What a gift!!!! So lucky,I never get to go out to the woods anymore....Never took my own! I did not know what they were at the time I found huge batches of them now they've been kind of claimed. People find their spots and get very possessive as you know. I live in a small state as far as mushroom hunting goes, and people get downright out nasty over there areas. Which ironically I had found first but I didn't know what I'd found. Doesn't seem fair does it LOL I knew where they were 40 years ago. but who thought fungus growing on a tree was not on the edible but you could pull it apart with your fingers and shred it! And it tastes like meat so I hear I've never eaten meat. I have a feeling it taste better than me cuz I don't like meat and I like those though I've only had small bites from other people's cooking. that was a beautiful Rosette! It was all beautiful. It's amazing the different weather at different times of the year August would be hot here and we wouldn't have any they're just starting now I would imagine I want to go hunting but I need someone to go with it's not a thing you do by yourself anymore unless you're packing and who wants did have to use that just to go by yourself. But I guess that's what it's for. what a world. well I hope you enjoyed it it looks like this is a year later. funny I was looking at mushrooms on my computer and my phone got the message.
when i was younger and not as intelligent my father brought a log stump back home and it began growing chicken of the woods, i used to kick off because i had no clue it was edible and i still regret it to this day
Does any of these grow in central to northern Canada. Seems we don't get shit up here. These or chanterelles, lions mane. I look all the time but I'm not finding anything.
You leave the mycelium it's the base of the mushroom where it's growing out of the tree and it will recruit again this year possibly and the next couple years.
I always thought fungi tasted like meat, I totally agree! Some might be allergic but if I can get a steady supply of these guys I’d definitely go vegetarian haha
I pan fried this mushroom with onions, tomatoes and habanero slices, oh lord! It was FIREEEE!!! I wouldn't share that mushrooms with nobody, i'd eat it all by my selfish self!!
ive found lots of chicken of the woods beautiful yellow with red on hwy 101 south of florence oregon around milepost 200 on the east side about a half mile back into the old growth. pretty sure i found it growing on a nearly 100 year old logging stump of what could only be cedar or pine of some kind, defenatly not on an oak or any kind of deciduous tree or hardwood. maybe the tree was just so old that i didnt matter
I've never had those types of mushrooms before but I heard any local restaurant that deals with specialty cuisines will pay top dollar for beautiful specimens like that.
I had one of these growing in my yard, also in central Minnesota. I'm not trained at all in identifying mushrooms so I just got rid of it, but after doing research I'm pretty confident it was chicken of the woods. Shame because it was a really big one too. Growing on the stump of my oak tree.

Found a huge one in perfect condition to the West of your location in the North American Taiga. Very good to eat, with some natural anti-inflammatory properties.

How long do you cook the mushrooms

you should try cooking it like fried chicked. breaded and deep fried. it tastes just like actual chicken!
*chicken
Sure does. I just did that with some last night. Gave some to the neighbors and they thought it was chicken.
Ha! I never thought of doing that-I will try that this year!
That's my go-to with it (and just about everything else). Found a monster one today while grouse hunting, not quite that big, but close.

have you guys try Chicken of the River yet?
The mycelium is all around the entire underpants of the mushroom . As it blooms it drops the mycelium from its gills .
Quick question, will those regrow the following year?
they do often grow back each year.
+330 MaNiaC Thanks man, awesome discovery.!
assuming you leave it so it can grow back?
You leave the mycelium it's the base of the mushroom where it's growing out of the tree and it will recruit again this year possibly and the next couple years.
thats what i figured! same laws apply to most rooms, but didnt know how these were harvested! great find!
what mushroom brother ?
are you immune to all that poison ivy next to the chicken of the woods you are standing in?
I'm not immune but I rarely get it. I basically have to roll in it to get it.
That is not poison ivy.
You get your knife back?
yes I did thanks!
have you ever found psychedelic caps mannnnnn?
Jake Lermana I might have but don't recognize them readily.
I want to bite a huge chunk right off of that mushroom right now
Watch out for poison ivy
Robert Daugherty I hate poison ivy!
You're supposed to leave 30% of the mushrooms your find, so they can continue to release spores.
as long as you leave the mycelium you can harvest the entire thing.
With the state of the meat packing production industry this would be a great alternative.
Some people have allergic reactions to them so not quite. There is a company that makes a meat alternative out of fungus

you can freeze it.... but it will never be as good as fresh.... it will hold up for a few days in the fridge tho...
You can vacuum pack and freeze it raw. It will keep for a long time.
How do you cook it man i seen it at the park today and wound up here
Slice it up and cook it in butter with salt and pepper. Make sure its done though.
Can u identify a mushroom for me its in my latest video.. white ish black from out ,. Small pores at the bottom.. and woody brown from inside!!!?
Thank you very much ! The best video of mushrooms . Subscribed .
