This game is my personal favorite beat ‘em up of all time. Streets of Rage 4 is an instant classic that successfully mixed skill-based gameplay along with bone crunching mindlessness. It turned out to be an amazing and worthy sequel to the franchise.
This S Rank run was honestly very difficult. Axel definitely has some pros and cons when it comes to his attacks and specials. While his range is long, his damage is lacking, especially just coming off of my Adam run. Overall, the recent patch made him better in some facets, including his grand upper, which can now hit off the ground, and does more damage. I would personally say he is about “middle of the pack” when it comes to a potential tier list, not amazing, but not the worst of the bunch (*Cough* Skate SOR 2 *Cough*)

Great run. I am actually trying to use Axel more on harder difficulties because I like his style, and I found this very helpful.
Using this to finally figure out how to chain different sections of the levels to get those sweet points. Thanks for uploading!

Damn, you went in. I usually do great til stage 6, then for some reason things just go down hill. Gotta practice those later stages more
Stage 6 onward is rough. Keeping a combo against the new enemy types isn't easy, and it can spiral pretty quickly. Just keep at it, and it'll pay off.
Really helpful video! I have a question though. For your movements and blitz attacks, do you use the thumbstick or d-pad/arrows?
I watch your video over and over to catch tricks I couldn't figure out. Although, I can't get a rank S at stage 9 , Y tower (in Difficult level, I'm playing on Steam and I try to get all the Success) . Can't beat Max fastly and can't push him away when he grads me. So if you have any tips ? Also, If you have any sort of tips when it comes to play with Axel, I'm ready to hear :) Thanks for sharing thoses videos, it really helped me a lot (especially to beat the Murphys)

So Max only has 4 moves (Spinning double-axe handle, dropkick, grab, and shoulder tackle), but him not being able to flinch means you need to take advantage whenever you can.
FIRST PHASE (Pre-flash):
Right at the start of the fight, Max is gonna come at you with a dropkick. You can either dish out a defensive special, or you can walk up, and then to the right (Like I did in this video). After this, you have a bit of time to get some hits in before his next move.
Spinning double-axe handle: He doesn't move while doing this attack yet, so its possible to hit him while he's spinning. Characters with a long range like Axel can hit him and dish some good damage.
Shoulder tackle: You have ample time to get some hits in before he charges, and you can even throw in a neutral jump-kick while he is coming at you.
Grab: While he's flashing red, you can get some good hits in. Even if he does manage to grab you, you can mash buttons ike your life depends on it and escape!
SECOND PHASE (Post-flash):
Now after the flash, Max's moves will be enhanced, so its best to get through the first phase quick so you can spend the most time on this phase.
Dropkick: This hasnt changed, so the above solutions still work haha
Spinning double-axe handle: Max moves now while doing this, so its really tough to sneak in some hits. The best move is to just her out of the way, but dont tuck yourself into a corner. Move to the part of the arena with the most space so he wont corner you and smack you.
Shoulder tackle: Pretty much thr same as above, but now he does it three times. Just wait for the tight moment to jump, and throw in some neutral jump-kicks if you're feeling confident enough. Worst case scenario, you can do a defensive soecial to avoid getting hit.
Grab: YOU CAN'T MASH OUT OF THIS GRAB. If he grabs you, you're getting suplexed, and it's gonna hurt. So when he flashes red, do as much damage as you can, then when he comes at you, hit him with a jump-kick and he wont grab you.
Overall, the best way to do damage is to hit him while he's revving up his moves, and to throw in jump-kicks during the shoulder tackle.

No problem! And I can also give you some tips on Axel.
I always thought he was very middle of the road, where he's not horrible, but not great.
His punches have good range, but are weak compared to somebody like Adam.
Since he can't kill enemies fast enough, crowd control is essential. His throws are a great source of that, especially his back throw. You can also use his charge attack, as that has a knockback effect on enemies.
His defensive special is great, and got a buff in the patch. It has strong range and a lot of active frames. His forward special does a lot of damage, but ONLY should be used when no enemy is around, or if you're planning on canceling it into your star move.
He's a conservative character that can't go too nuts, so he relies on a lot of crowd control and defensive specials. I personally think he's really fun to play, plus it's a bonus that he looks cool as hell haha.

@@granduppergaming I 'd say that I know Axel's moves pretty well, my weaknesses come from me not daring enough to play the defensive move because I'm afraid to have too much green in my life bar, and so what if Donovan hit me!? ^^ But since I've watch your videos I use more often the high kick and this defense round.
Axel is my childhood favorite character, I played SOR 1 for many years when I was only a 8 years old ^^ It's nostalgic. I like Adam and Blaze a lot, I find them super great in SOR 4, much more attractive to play. At this moment I've played Axel for many weeks, so I'm a bit rusty when I play another character. I'll give Adam a shot though. I only have stage 9 and stage 12 to complete to get all S rank. But Damn ! It's hard. I start over and over and somehow I manage to understand the AI and anticipate its moves... slowly.
Maybe some videos about tricks, pros and cons of caracters would be an idea? I would be the first interested anyway.

Is it me or are "They are back" ("Go Straight") fits perfectly with the rhytm of Axel's attack ?

I know all the scores I need for getting an S rank on the individual stages, but have no idea how the game would dictate the rank for a one credit playthrough. Do you have any idea how many points you need for that? My assumption right now is you need to get the score necessary for an S rank in each level in order to get an Arcade S at the end of the run. I just don't wanna get through the whole thing multiple times only to be greeted by a B when I finish, I gotta know where I went wrong!
It might be to do with maximum combos
For an S rank in arcade, you need 425,000+ points!
dude ur so patient :D does it worth to pick up enemies with jump special move?
Ehhh the jump special isnt really my cup of tea. I feel it's hitbox is lacking and it leaves you too vulnerable haha
He made that fight with max look so easy

As for the mace, I always look back at my old runs and wonder why I make certain mistakes, and look at things I should've done better. This is a good example of that haha

Man, screw the Balloon/Buffet fight at 1:35:14. I hate it, and glad to see high-level play hate it too lol.

@@granduppergaming I noticed when you were doing a lot of grabs/throws the s worked wonders. Anytime trying to do combos one of them would insta-roll or jump into you during it. But that's me just backseating, I know it's not that simple lol. Sweet run tho!
Oh you've definitely got a point! The s on throws are crazy important, but I guess I panic and don't use them as often as I should. Maybe I'll use them more next time!

I guess Axel’s air special is not the key to success I thought it would be
Haha sometimes I forget that I have an air special. It leaves me a little too vulnerable after I do it, so I try not to use it unless I feel like styling.
