How to Reset SMC on Macbook Air or Macbook Pro 2018 & Later

- Are you having issues with your battery life, keyboard backlight not working right, or the fans on your Mac are coming on all the time when they didn't before?
Try resetting the SMC, it controls those things + more. It could resolve your problem.
This video applies to those Macbook Pro's or Air's from 2018 and later, for years prior the method is easier.
To skip the intro go to 1:09 of the video
Here are the steps:
1st:
-Go to the Apple menu and choose “Shut Down” to turn off the Mac
-Once your Mac is off, press and hold the Power button for 10 seconds
Release holding the power button, then wait a few seconds.
-Press the Power button again to turn the Mac on.
2nd:
-Shut down your Mac by going to the Apple menu and choose “Shut Down”
-After the Mac is turned off, press and hold the left OPTION key, and the left CONTROL key & the right SHIFT key for 7 seconds
-Keep holding all three keys for 7 seconds, then press and hold the power button as well. If your Mac is on, it will turn off as you hold the keys.
-Keep holding all four keys for additional 7 seconds, then release them.
Wait a few seconds, then press the power button to turn on your Mac.
Hopefully after following these steps your Mac issues are resolved!

My screen didn't turn bright and I didn't hear the fans.
Also during the second step, when I hit the ctrl and options and shift key my Mac turned on then when I added the power key it turned off. Is that supposed to happen? Also how do I know if it worked ?

For those of you for whom this suggestion DID NOT WORK, I was feeling desperate. I tried EVERYTHING. I finally took some aluminum foil and jammed it between the charger and the port. It didn't work, BUT when I removed it, its DID WORK! Not sure why, but I'll be trying again if there's a next time.
I was having problems with the touch pad, not being able to move or click it, this resolved it really appreciate it!!!

Dude, you saved me!!!! I thought my MacBook was dead. You are the only one that had that combination of keys of Control/Option/Shift for 7 sec then add the Power button for 7 sec and it worked. My battery runs flat either during startup or around 3 minutes after using my MacBook. I have to keep it plugged in all the time. Should I open it up and see if the battery is connected

Hi, I have a macbook air 2018, I’ve tried the steps exactly the same but my screen brightness stayed the same in the end (i dimmed it to see if it’ll brighten up after the SMC reset). Does this mean the SMC reset is a fail? Or how else can I can check if the SMC has been reset?

I've a question here, my macbook air is an M1 2020, I've seen you said this may work, but when I hold the turn on buttom for more than 5 secs it goes to recovery options, any ideas? My mac just turn off when it gets to some battery point between 50% and 60% and it;s impossible to turn on without the charger plugged in... Im going crazy here.

Hello, the flickering in my Touch Bar is still present and I followed all the steps… Is there anything that I did wrong?
When resetting SMC does this include resetting the Touch Bar, my MacBook Pro 2018s Touch Bar is flickering white, sometimes little dull flickers on one corner sometimes the whole bar will flash a nearly blinding white. Any input would be helpful please.
