      while i enjoyed the show, i wasn't sold on the ending...precisely because i know the history and just having a flash forward of Sekigahara was lame. sure we closed out the story of big characters, but there's still alot of characters and stories that can be told and if the ultimate goal is the siege of Osaka, Toronaga and Ochiba's relationship and mental chess match needs to be played out (and the ultimate bingo card should be that Toronaga knows Ochiba's secret). Blackthorne had a strong start but then faded. Blackthorne can have a major role again if they explore how he historically taught Japan to build the first european-style ship, how he established trade with other european powers other than the Portuguese, give him a happy love story cause he married a Japanese wife (i think this and the actor that plays his wife will be crucial cause she needs to charm him and us, the audience). the battle of Sekigahara hinged on the allegiance of a few key lords and one in particular turned the tide...there will be plenty of political drama to explore in season 2. there are big, big figures in Japanese history involved that can be explored like: Hattori Hanzo, Miyamoto Musashi and Sanada Yukimura.

    I wouldn't mind a season 2, especially since so much of the political intrigue with the church, and the black ship was left out. I know they mentioned Mariko's deal, but it was wrapped up too quickly. A second season would allow that plot to develop and allow more scenes with Rodriguez, who was criminally under shown. Also, as you mentioned, i think the climax of the show would have to be the Siege of Osaka, Ochiba would not just let Toranaga become Shogun, over her son, the would be second Taiko. But the final episode would need to be a small time lapse to when the Emperor invited Toranaga to become Shogun.
    To be honest, there could even be a potential third season, if they wanted to do a story centered around the Shimabara Rebellion, which happened only 37 years after Sekigahara.

    Flower has fallen. Leave it alone.
    Either they’re gonna have to make up a very fictitious version of the early Toranaga/Tokugawa Shogunate (since the rest of that character’s/person’s life is not particularly eventful), or they could go with a prequel that focuses on events like the initial unification of Japan and the ascent of the taiko (this could at least justify bringing back many of the popular characters from season 1).
    Personally, I vote for an option 1 crossover involving an adaptation intersecting the end of _Shogun_ with the events portrayed in _Lone Wolf and Cub_ . The _LW&C_ timeline could be adjusted to the beginning of the Edo period with Ogami Itto losing then regaining the favor of Toranaga (differing from the plot of _LW&C_ ). This would also give other amazing Japanese actors their turn in the Hollywood spotlight.

    Season 2 will definitely mean flashback scenes to show the storylines left out from Season 1 and there's a lot of them. They left out so much from the book. It also means a drawn out action scene of the battle at Sekigahara although the book only described it in a single sentence in the last paragraph of the book. It's going to turn out a disaster I'm sure.

    If they do S2, I want to see a lot more scenes with Rodriguez. Such an amazing frenemy character! And Blackthorne should really end up with Fuji. She's awesome! She risked her own life for Blackthorne by pointing those pistols to defend the house. Smart, brave, loyal, and beautiful.

    Since a lot of people are saying the same thing, here's more info: when I say there's no source material, I mean a book, like James Clavell's novel, with all the plots laid out and characters ready. I know there's a lot of history that can be adapted, but that's a lot more difficult to do than a book, which already has everything planned out. If they are basing the second season on real history, then good luck because that's going to be a tough job for the writers. That doesn't mean I don't have hope though. I think they can do a good job if they give themselves enough time and not rush it like many others do. Love you guys thanks for the comments ❤

The Macao story and silver mining in Columbia. It endless. I could write four seasons. Pieces of eight. Mongol invasion. As long as it’s this team it won’t be crappy fight scenes every ten seconds. assuming non-linear progression, there's a lot of room to fill in gaps and time jump all over the place with Season 2. opening the door for all characters to be a part of Season 2, not just those who were still alive at the end of the last episode of Season 1. Whatever they choose to do, if it is as beautiful as Season 1, and the scripts and acting as well done, I will be in. If there will be more FUJI-sama, I am 100% all in! I truly fell in love with her, I think there's a lot more story to be told just with her character alone. I am happy to hear about a Season 2, I felt I could watch that world on and on, so beautiful. as a die-hart Tolkien fan, I learned long ago to try to let go of what I expect to see on screen vs source material. It will rarely ever be exactly what you want nor expect. let it go. enjoy this artists version of the world you came to know in other ways.

    On the plus side, if a season 2 turns out bad (as I expect) it won’t hurt season 1 too much. Since season 1 is great as a stand alone I can easily dismiss and forget a bad season 2. Think of all the direct-to-video sequel movies that have been made over the years. They may be hard to watch, especially if you love the original movie, but they are easy to forget or even skip. 🙃

    It feels like a very very bad idea. The series was based on thick novel and had already been adapted into a mini-series once before in the 80s. They started with a great and deep story to draw from and examples from the eighties that it could work on television. Not only that they started working on it back in 2018!! A great production company, great sets and costumes, even great actors need a great script from which to work if they want something good at the end. They do not have a story anymore and worse they will be on a time crunch to get a second season thrown together too. I fear a second season won’t only be less but bad bad bad.

  • @nehukybis
    @nehukybis 4 месяца назад

    This is awesome! Let's discuss what should definitely happen in Season 2. (Spoilers for anyone who hasn't finished season 1):
    1. Killing off popular characters was definitely a terrible idea, serieswise. But are they really dead? My idea for the series 2 twist is that some shadowy figure is behind the council of regents, pulling the strings. Big reveal... it's Mariko! MIND BLOWN. As in, her mind was blown. The explosion gave her brain damage, and now she's crazy. Crazy sexy!
    2. The fan favorite of course was Tadanobu Asano. Gotta bring him back, of course. Unfortunately, he wasn't just singed by an explosion, he was flat out decapitated on screen. But what if he had an identical twin? You could say the twin was the one who was beheaded, but if we bring back too many characters who were killed in season 1 it might get stale. So instead, have Tadanobu play the twin in season 2. Only he's the good twin, of course. So you'd have a Loki thing going on where you take a villain played by a popular actor and turn them into a hero, for the fans.
    3. More Ninja!
    4. At least one scene where two female samurai fight each other. Barefoot.
    5. Dare I say it... Kaiju?
    6. At least one actual battle. Is that too much to ask?
    With Kaiju.
    7. Better costumes
    8. I really want to see the hijinks that ensue with that mission in Edo that's next door to a brothel.

    Actually, they skipped a lot of content from the book. That they didn't explored and adapted in this adaptation. Such as the relationship between Toranaga and his other son. If there is one thing that I can hold out hope for, it's that this production team and writers have a mastery of subtlety in storytelling and have done nothing but surprise and thrill me whenever I have started to doubt. However, they are really playing with fire from what I feel was a perfect season/series. I loved the book, and I possibly loved the show more, but ultimately both were a rehash of history, and there sure is a lot more interesting history and characters to cover in that era. But now they are off the track of a great novel and toying with beloved characters. I really hope they don’t just AI-generate some story arcs as a cash grab and actually do something interesting to tell the story further.
    Just an idea, but maybe they could do a season of one-off episodes filling out the characters' pasts, presents, and futures. (Kind of like the Covid interstitial episodes of Euphoria. Those two episodes were incredible character pieces and were almost the best thing out of an already pretty great show.) Toranaga's backstory and future have a ton of potential, but you could also explore Buntaro fleeing and fighting to Izu after being left in Osaka. You could depict some good Blackthorn pre-Japan sailing adventures. I also see the potential for some Mariko-Ochiba backstory or Fuji becoming a nun. A future Omi-Kiku-Gin Willow World in Edo story could have legs, and a Yabushige backstory could almost be a "Better Call Saul" series within itself.

    Since there is no second part to the novel, what I would expect is a pre-season 1 story.
    In this dorama, how the character Toranaga was created is described.
    He is modeled after a historical figure, Tokugawa Ieyasu.
    It was Mariko's father who rebelled against Oda Nobunaga in the Honnoji Incident, and the warlord who vanquished the traitor was Taikou, who was Toranaga's rival.
    This drama, which is a prelude to Season 1, allows for the reintroduction of Toranaga, Hironaga, Yabushige, and Mariko. Unfortunately, Blackthorn does not appear in this period.

    Don't get me wrong, the final episode was FANTASTIC, it gave everything of the nuance, political, strategical, philosophical approach , that Toranaga(based on Tokugawa Ieasu), had.

    There is source material:
    1. A lot of the novel was cut from the series. We saw this in The Godfather Part 2 with the Young Vito storyline. If you haven't read the novel, you are not going to believe who Anjin marries.
    2. Clavell was writing about Tokugawa Ieyasu. A team of writers can do the same. Just like Clavell, they can introduce fictional characters and not offend history buffs.
    3. The series was better than the novel. Clavell did not understand a lick of the Japanese language. If you understand Japanese, it is pretty jarring trying to read that gibberish. The writing team really cleaned up Clavell's draft and should be able to take the story into the sequel.

    I wish they could show the past events of Shogun like Star Wars, such as how Toranaga grew up. Shogun Toranaga is based on the true story of Ieyasu Tokugawa, who is the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan. After a long period of inner conflict, Ieyasu and his descendants created the "Pax Tokugawa," which was an era of internal peace and political stability that lasted over 250 years. When he was eight years old, Ieyasu was sent as a hostage to the Imagawa clan. Anyway, it would be very interesting to watch if Shogun Season 2 created a drama about young Ieyasu to see how the hostage boy became a strategic shogun. ruclips.net/video/NQMI6h-iNqk/видео.html

    There's actually a lot of story left. This was loosely based on real people and events. Anjin ends up setting up trade between Japan and England. He actually marries and lives long life in Japan. Buntaro actually out lived them all. Toranaga doesn't immediately become Shogun, so I think there's plenty of source if you draw from the actual history.

    it's really not a bad move. they'll just fictionalize real history and match it with the events in the book / season 1. if you know some of the actual historical events that unfolded, you know things are going to get crazy

    History records of fail when you go outside of source material is huge, but hey if God Omens could do it, they even had the original source materials creators to write more. There have been many instances where going beyond the source material has failed.

    If they followed history too closely and much beyond the battle of Sekigehara, a season 2 would make Toranaga go from an ambiguous character, to a really bad guy and ruin the mystery around him which was so well developed in Season 1. Unless season 2 only covered the time immediately after season 1 and was focused on and around the battle of Sekigehara, that might be epic, would be a different kind of show but would give many fans what we wanted.

    I utterly and completly disagree with you.
    Regarding the "source material", Clavel book is based in real life characters, which had A LOT MORE INTERESTING LIVES just after the point the book ended!
    If they just get inspiration on the real life characters and events they can make a fricking interesting Season 2 and beyond.
    Just, and example, Tokugawa Ieyasu used Adams (in real life) to start merchant trading with the Dutch, and take out power from the Christian daimios. And oh boy it was a complicated matter. Because Adams sided with the Japanese and not the Dutch (that tought Adams was "their man").
    Returning Fuji to the series is trivial (she's not dead, we don't even know if she has went to the Shinto or Buddhist Monestery that its, quite close to Anjio anyway) and Adams married, in real life, the daughter of a Samurai Lord.
    We also, have, a lot of really interesting, and also fun, characters that have been complitly underused or nearly ignored in Season 1 (Vasco Rodriguez, anyone?)
    So no, they have to really screw it hard to not make an interesting Season 2.
    I'm, kinda, baffled why Clavel doesn't followed with the lives of the characters, because he didn't touch one of the most interesting episodes in the history of Japan. The era of the Shogunate and the ending of Portuguese (and west) influence in Japan for nearly 300 hundred years.

    Clavell changed the historical names so that he could take certain artistic liberties with the actual events to be able to tell a good story first and foremost for a Western audience who at the time were not familiar with Japanese history. There's a lot that can be done with that approach, but at the same time you're gambling that the writers that you have will be able to continue to tell the story of another author without alienating that same author's fans. You can point to Game of Thrones or even Kennedy's version of Star Wars. Yeah, you would still make money off of milking the franchise for a bit, but you also risk damaging the franchise and gaining a bad reputation for yourself. In the long term, it would be better just to create some new series set in feudal Japan or adapt another one of Clavell's books.

    They can can in 2 different directions since they already adapted the book, They can countinue to adapt more events albeit in a historical ficiton sense with what happened with williams and the shogunate(trust me their is a lot of stuff and events that happened ) or can go in a total different direction with different events all together. its hard to tell and they can mess this up as the first season had the book for basis of all characters traits, directions, actions and personalities, without that it will be tough as it will depend entirely on the momentum of the writers to keep in interested and hollywood writers are not exactly the best these days.

    What do you mean no source material? We have hundreds of years of history and Tokugawa's exploits to draw from. Although Mariko and Ochiba were based on actual people Fuji was largely made up anyhow. We have many talented actors and actresses in Japan that can bring excellent characters to the show .

    • @thenextseason
      @thenextseason  4 месяца назад

      Yes, like I said in another comment, adapting a book is always a lot more easier than adapting a whole history. Bringing together different historical sources and carving out a dramatic story would take years imo.

    • @Shoguntkd
      @Shoguntkd 4 месяца назад

      @@thenextseason True but if you think about it, Clavell basically took Tokugawa's story and embellished it a bit. There are a plethora of adaptations of the stories in Japan that could be used to modernize it a bit. As you mentioned, the Siege of Osaka and Battle of Sekigahara are almost seasons on their own, or at least a movie length story. You can go do off shoots about the rise of the Yagyu clan, the Christian Expulsion, building of Edo Castle, we could go on and on.
