I’m pretty new to overlanding so excuse the newbie question, but what’s the deal with camping on 4wd tracks? I’ve done heaps of tramping throughout nz so know those rules.
First time I went up Tukino Mountain Road was when I was 7. Dad Drove his brand new Hillman Avenger up. 15 bricks in the boot for traction. These days even the track to the 2wd carpark is HARD YAKKA 4x4 since Cyclone Hale (not Gabrielle) in Jan 2023. Snow-By-Four has latest.
I was up there in Jan this year - very different than it was when I filmed this! Changes a lot eh. That would've been a pretty cool trip up there though back in the day
@@OverlandNZTV Yeah mate, the 4wd, Hunting and Fishing crowd need to get organised, instead of pulling their pants down, bending over and taking it every time. There are becoming less and less places that don't have a gate up, and I want my kids to be able to enjoy what I have been lucky enough to experience.
Hey man, looking to do a bit of solo camping soon after XMAS if I can. That campsite at 5:15 where was that? Looks like I nice place to crack open a cold one and setup camp for the night.
Yet another great video thanks overland nz. Not sure if you've done a video yet on the rtt would love to see one and the reason or reasons why that one over a hard shell for here in NZ cheers 👍
Should be all good! The water holes at the start change all the time and generally aren’t too deep. Once you’re beyond them it’s just a super bumpy drive to the top - well worth it in a clear day, the views are awesome
Wicked video, what time month of year is this? And what was the track in to the first campsite like? Do you think a 4wd with lift and decent mud tyres would have any trouble ?
This was filmed in December - so summertime. Na shouldn’t have any issue - the drone clip through the river is the hardest bit - gets chopped up. The rest is super simple. My old Hilux had ATs and a basic lift - zero issues getting there
Love your vids man - and I have downloaded the app. Quick question: At around the 5:15 mark you come to a campsite and decide to stay the night. I have camped at various places around NZ and have either had to book in advance or sign-in-and-pay on the day. How did you know that you could just camp there spontaneously? (Someone might have booked it already?) Sorry - I only ask because I am finding all the regs around camping, fires, beach driving etc quite difficult to get my head around :-) Thanks
Cheer man! The campsite by the river isn't an "official" one - so if there's space, you can stay. I ended up at a free DOC one slightly further up the road - again, you just rock up and if there's space, setup for the night. 95% of the time we camp at DOC sites where you just show up, pay your few dollars if needed and setup - most of them don't take bookings or anything. Hope that kinda helps! We very rarely book campsites as we don't know where we're going to be each night - 99% of the time it's fine, though there have been a few times we've rocked up to places and had to keep going as there's been no space. Hope that kinda helps! Happy to clarify anything :)
I have so many questions. We went there yesterday and couldn't figure out how you got to the spout. Also the pillars, we kept taking tracks and roads and got opposite them
To get to the spout you needa' head over the dam and up the little track thats to the left as you get back onto solid ground again - navigator.overland.nz/track/69 👍 As for the pillars, I was heading out from Urchin Campsite and turned left, there was a little carpark. Google Maps doesn't really show that area though - can see more detail on a topo map. Hope that helps!
Hey! Cheers for watching the videos - always cool to hear where people are from! The tonneau cover is a genuine Toyota one from what I can see, it came on the Hilux when I bought it - seen them on a few NZ new Hiluxs. Hope that helps!
Hey mate! Cheers for the feedback - have been toying with a few different ideas for this very issue as it's tricky to show in the video. Have just launched the 'Trips/videos' section on our Navigator site, lists each track/campsite/interest point in the order they happened - navigator.overland.nz/trips - hope that helps! Cheers
Hilux is the only way to go in NZ there bazza! Bush beach snow and road its always ready never fails and easy to drive and maintain.. Ranger is good for the road but gbox wont last long off road compared to hilux.
We used Overland Navigator over the Xmas break and explored Tukino and Waipukihi Road. Found a couple of great camp spots!
Nice! Glad to hear it was useful! So cool to hear stories of people using it to plan their trips and find spots

RUclips recommended this, was not disappointed! Love to see more stuff from across the ditch!
Cheers mate! Glad you enjoyed it!
Tukino Ski Field road looks so different now
Sure is! Guess a winters and big storms take their toll
Enjoy the memories, Rangipo Intake and Waipakahi Roads are both closed for good to public access, you can thank HeliSika Taupo for that.
It's a shame eh - was such an awesome area. Money talks unfortuently

Haha bought the tyres, got the hoodie. Me too 👍
Haha - yup! Always nice to get a freebie! Quite like it eh - warm enough without being full on winter mode

Hi, good worknon the filming BTW, was the Urchin campsite the same one with the river beside it? Cheers

Cheers mate! We did a video... 18 months ago?... on the tent - but didn’t include anything on that topic - will see what we can do!
Do you reckon the full drive is possible in a subaru outback outside of the snow season?
Should be all good! The water holes at the start change all the time and generally aren’t too deep. Once you’re beyond them it’s just a super bumpy drive to the top - well worth it in a clear day, the views are awesome
You will struggle on Waipakihi Rd in an outback.
Great vid. So all these tracks open to the public?
Cheers mate! Yep, they are indeed 👍 The gate at Tukino can be locked (as it was when I was there) - but the rest are open to explore

Beautiful place. Love the water crossing. The drone footage was great. I'm in to see what you do next. I clicked everything you can click !
Cheers! Such an amazing spot up there eh. Glad you’re enjoying the content!
Such a beautiful location, makes me realise there is so much of NZ I have not even seen yet. Do you reckon a rav4 gxl could survive this? :D
It's not bad up there! You'd probably be all good in a RAV - it's pretty rough, but not too tricky or anything!

Ok thanks! Also did you go up the Kaimanawa Rd?
Sure did! Urchin campsite and the pillars are up that way - it’s a nice drive through the forest
Hello from Japan🇯🇵 always enjoy watching ur videos as I also have Hilux. One question is what kind of tonneau cover you use😅?I would like to know it!
Hey! Cheers for watching the videos - always cool to hear where people are from! The tonneau cover is a genuine Toyota one from what I can see, it came on the Hilux when I bought it - seen them on a few NZ new Hiluxs. Hope that helps!
I really wished you showed more maps on your video of roughly where you are.

Hey can u gsp location for first cmp site
👌
Welcome to my back yard! Good eh?
Love that area up there eh! Find awesome new spots every time we head up that way!
This guy needs to file a lawsuit against Toyota for putting his steering wheel on the WRONG SIDE! .... trade that Yoda in for a Ranger too...
Yuck a ranger 😂
