    Awh! We love watching videos like this. We live on our sailboat, sailing the world so enjoy watching likeminded adventurers share their stories. Keep the content coming! Maybe we will cross paths out there someday :)

      I reckon you’d still get one up there on the right day - seen a few Subarus up there in the past. Hopefully DOC sort the muddy bit sometime soon!

    Great to see the hut has been fixed up, just a few years ago it was full of bullet holes and covered in graffiti, hopefully gets more respect now than it used to.

      Another great spot to check out with a bit of a 4x4 playground nearby is Whariti Peak, only think to watch out for in winter is falling icicles from the radio tower, can be a bit of a hazard especially when its windy, but great views from up there, even though its right by Ashurst you can see all the way to Kapiti Island and on a really clear day Lake Ferry can be spotted to the south east.

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  Год назад +1

      It was really nicely done - hopefully it lasts this time. Not sure why people feel the need to smash huts up...
      Whariti Peak is awesome eh! Managed to get up there on a clear day a while back - the views were epic

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  3 года назад +1

      Cheers man! It was touch and go - wasn’t sure id get through. Has gotten way worse now apparently - hopefully they can get a digger up there to sort it out

    • @CaMae86
      @CaMae86 3 года назад +3

      Usually happens there I think? There's a culvert that blocks up and nobody thinks to clear it etc etc. Was probably worse than that in 2013 doc sent a digger up and tidied it up.
      Was pretty rugged in early 2000s too.
      Good to see the hut fixed up hope it gets respected! Seems to be heaps of lakesea & light bar types up there making their own side tracks and wrecking shit all the time :( same with North range

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  3 года назад +2

      True - interesting to know! First time I've seen it that bad - but I don't tend to go up in winter. I really hope it does too, no idea why people feel the need to destroy huts and stuff - just a waste. Haven't done North Range for a long while, have heard it's gotten pretty rough though

  • @jfxr3576

    Hay mate another great video so apart from the hut are ther any areas to camp up,and also how far pass the hut can u drive down to any way of getting down to the dannevirke side or is it walking tracks cheers

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  2 года назад +1

      Cheers mate! There are probably spots you could camp - it’s pretty exposed up there though, the wind smashes through. There’s a little campsite by a river about 5 minutes up the road from the start. Can’t think of any major flat bits off the side - but sure there would be some. Haven’t gone beyond the hut myself - I know you can, but it gets fairly hardcore pretty quickly. All walking tacks down the other side - would be cool if you could drive it though eh!

  • @alanpfeiffer9686

    I wonder sometimes whether it is worth carrying a set of chains ,in conditions with snow and ice and clay tracks they give a better grip

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  3 года назад +1

      I was thinking the exact same thing as I was heading up the hill - thankfully Takapari Road is a hard rocky surface normally, so didn't have too many issues. Lot of extra weight to carry for something I wouldn't use often though

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  3 года назад +1

      Cheers mate! It is a dead end - I know a few people who push on, it gets pretty rough pretty quickly - and you have to turn back. I'm keen as to do it one day - solo in the snow wasn't the best day to try 😂

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  2 года назад

      Cheers! It’s about an hour on a good day from the gate to the hut. Between filming and the snow it took maybe three hours to get up there? Always hard to know - filming makes things take three times as long haha

      I was a tad concerned about getting back up as I headed down - it was getting icey. Turned out not to be too bad - managed to crawl back up. Can see how you'd get into trouble there though eh!

    Do you think a standard 07 suzuki grand vitara with A/Ts no lift would be capable of this track?

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV  3 года назад +1

      Assuming they’ve fixed the huge ruts at the start, you’d have no issues at all - it’s generally a fairly easy, if not crazy bumpy, drive up the hill 👍

      Wasn’t too bad when I went through, drove it easily. That spot gets boggy every winter - and the traffic over the following weekend finished it off sadly - too many people trying to get up and see the snow
