Gamekeepers who engage in this kind of behaviour want locking up. Sadly that won't bring the lost birds back. Our raptors are precious, conserving them is more important than ever as they are facing threats from humans, climate change, habitat loss and more. It's SO sad. Crimes against birds of prey are not punished half as harshly as they should be. It should be a minimum of two years and/or an unlimited fine at the very least. Not ALL gamekeepers are like this, many gamekeepers appreciate the importance of birds of prey and are actively involved in helping other gamekeepers proof their stock and improving local habitats. It's those few that aren't that want rooting out and punishing, they want making examples of!.
I'm not either way. But find it ironic, that shooting say pheasants. A bird which I constantly try to avoid. They mostly sit in the middle of the lane not moving even after a blow on the horn. Don't make false claims about the ladder trap It is perfectly legal to catch corvids. It is not there to catch birds of prey. And .....grouse moors have a plentiful and varied wildlife.
I see there’s a few comments saying that the video simply shows the Goshawk being removed from the trap and bagged to probably be removed to a safer area.. But if you watch the video carefully there is a section of the video chopped out, which I assume is to censor the actual murder of the bird. Watch the video again.. and pay attention. Can you see any movement of the bird inside of the bag ? If the bird was still alive you would see the bag jumping around with the bird’s powerful wings trying to make its escape because it would be in full panic mode.. I used to beat the grouse moors for around 20 years.. and we all knew what was going on, it was an open secret.
You'd still have a moor, it would just be more diverse in species. It would no longer be a man made monoculture of heather. These areas weren't heather monocultures going back in history and supported far more abundant and varied wildlife.
@@DeLunny Biodiversity as your only goal ignores the niches certain (endangered) species need, and ignores the dramatic loss of heathland the UK has undergone over the last few hundred years. Its a rare habitat, and different habitats naturally have different levels of biodiversity. Planting more trees would just kickstart succession and yes, that would destroy the moor. Dramatically changing the habitat is indeed a terrible idea for said species and for the wider conservation of heathland. “Plant more trees” is a way to increase biodiversity in degraded or destroyed habitats yes, but destroying a rare habitat for woodland that we already have a lot of is a terrible idea.
Issues are often ambiguous. There is no excuse for killing birds of prey, especially rare ones. Also burning the moor should be ended. But after that it is all positive and could continue without those practices. There is little else you can you with that land that will employ locals. The sheep barely break even and could be virtually ended by brexit tariffs at 40% to the continent where most of lamb and mutton is sold.
So it wasn't a hunter or a game shooter it was done by a keeper. Also people keep moaning about controlled burning well if they stop the controlled burning u get un controlled burning that is worse
All very convenient having a camera set up and catching a "hoody" taking a bird from a trap then without evidence claiming the bird was killed. Perhaps the police should be investigating the people who reported the alleged "crime"
So one sided when you think that 1 in a 1000 game keepers have been convicted. How many police officers out of a thousand have been jailed for criminal activities?? Its rather more. As for the wildlife on the moors, how do they account for the fact that managed land has more wildlife of every kind than any RSPCA or RSPB land . The outcome for burning is to steralise the land which promotes growth and insects and habitat for birds. Where as chemicals destroy water courses and kill everything down stream as well. As for a fair interview , this was like a piers morgan style , interview everyone else at leisure then ambush people who have paid for a day or at work. Poor poor interviewing techniques the media use today.

Ps I remember just a few years ago stumbling upon an illegal deerhunt (with dogs) involving 8-10 smart 4WD's near Cropton. That was early morning New Years day. Too many people with money involved in all this.
Pps would love to see someone explain how this brings 100 million pounds to the economy every year! What utter garbage. An abuse of our Land by the 'elites'.
Hunting with dogs is something saddos with nothing else to do with their lives do to pass the time (this does not include using dogs for retrieving I mean using dogs to illegally kill foxes, badgers, deer etc).
Shooting is simple
No shooting no grouse
Disgusting
Disgusting that's all I can say 😤
Never heard such rubbish .
Peatland stores are the dencest carbon stores in the world. Burning allows the habitat to be just as fruitfull as it used to be, jsut on a smaller area (due to forestry, building, and road networks). To suggest that grousemoors only have grouse on them is a sign of imbecility that we only see from the media, and the infirm, we have the largest number of wild birds including raptors on land managed for grouse shooting. No one in the industry agrees with breaking the law to allow for a gain on their shoot. If we didn't love the enviroment and want to care for the animals in it, why would we be live in it and manage it for all wildlife and flora.
As usual, great reporting Ch4News on the urgent (but not very popular, at all, among other news outlets) matter👏👏👏
It's outrageous you should be charging any money at all that's the problem here! it comes under the Queen's Estate it should be free for anybody as her subject to shoot.
the Queen's estate and the government should be funding the upkeep of the Land. Be good to track where this money is going.
Too right!
No one should be allowed to shoot other animals for fun . C'mon , we can do better than that now .
Oh John you really are a moron! I'd like you to be shown some serious corporal punishment for your attitude, dimwit!
@@simoncooper8272 go on then educate me! just insulting somebody shows that you are of little worth something you would wipe on the grass. what don't you like about my comment!
Sure you think it's ok for people to shoot birds if it's free! Government doesn't fund any royal land! Or it wouldn't be royal land! Bet you voted Brexshit too? It's all yours for free! Hence the dimwit, dimwit!
Surely they are vital to the entire natural ecosystems...I had no idea they trapped, burnt, and poisioned too. Its dispicable... and for the privileged few! Its got to stop...
0:35 why is your reporter going after people less than 2m away and not wearing a mask?
Sometimes to the point of having to stop, and exit the car to move it on.
Seems they have any perception of self preservation bred out of them. The wild birds are gone instantly! I'm certainly not decreet in the car lol.
Anyway enjoy your sport guys, I guess.
Excellent news report.
Those gamekeepers 🤣
Where was the 'undercover' bit of the report. Even the trail cam type footage of the cage was probably done by someone else and maybe even with permission.
What's your point? Anyway pay attention the first part of the video where the hawk was killed and the other bait birds were discarded in the stream was covertly filmed!
Let's go out n shoot some birdies, if it moves they can kill it!
Cowards with guns, killing defenceless animals for fun.
Good job Channel 4.
Great story Channel 4!!!
one sided one .
I dont know any shoot manager or keeper who wears a zip up hood. Set up lol
You’re in complete denial. There’s a prosecution on its way, it’s obviously not a set up.
@@jamamafegan4 being in the profession as legal Counsel, I can tell you that a proverbial coach and horses will be driven through that 'prosecution' such as you maintain. Good luck all the same.
There’s to much money been made from this it’s not going to stop anytime soon
I shoot but I totally disagree with killing raptors
You also haven’t got any actually got any keepers to see what they think and grouse keeping actually encourages biodiversity!!!!!!!!!!
Very cool, greetings from Indonesia are always present
Weird. I am 100% on the side of the Duchy of Lancaster!!
Don't make false claims about the ladder trap
It is perfectly legal to catch corvids.
So medieval, so coward, so unnecessary. Don't come over the Amazon Forest, as wolfs. Mind your own butts.
Tree planting?! You wouldn’t have a moore if you did that. Lack of knowledge of the areas potential indicates lack of intention to follow through.
The sheep barely break even and could be virtually ended by brexit tariffs at 40% to the continent where most of lamb and mutton is sold.
in fact the UK imports the same amount of lamb as it exports; then the new export markets for lamb will eclipse current ones no problemo
😳😳 they make so much money 💰 from this
wtf ran across the screen at around 3:09 ?
Red Grouse
Such a one side piece... incidentally the bird captured was not seen being killed... was probably have been released elsewhere!!
I believe the queen should be prosecuted she knows what’s going on down with the monarchy
What a dumb comment
So it wasn't a hunter or a game shooter it was done by a keeper. Also people keep moaning about controlled burning well if they stop the controlled burning u get un controlled burning that is worse
so instead of telling the game warden they just filmed it and called a reporter... of course totally not organized outtrage.
They turn it into the police and they are doing something about it.
All very convenient having a camera set up and catching a "hoody" taking a bird from a trap then without evidence claiming the bird was killed. Perhaps the police should be investigating the people who reported the alleged "crime"
Do these eat them?
Grouse is lovely yes
A gamekeepers trap, what honestly next to a road, think about the people that are setting up things to make it like gamekeepers etc, also the hawk went in a bag to get let loose probably

Killing Raptors is out of order, lets not lose this great sporting tradition though, great wild meat, wish i could afford it!
What is "rare" about goshawks? Quite common actually.
Have you any evidence to back that up? Not that scarceness or commoness has any relevance of course.
@@ChrisJB datazone.birdlife.org/species/factsheet/northern-goshawk-accipiter-gentilis
The 'global' map only shows them as widespread. It cannot possibly illustrate individual countrywide populations. In the UK (where this took place) they are a rare and much persecuted species.
@@ChrisJB Even in the UK, they are not considered endangered species in any way. The population is stable. In fact the black grouse of which the goshawk is a predator is endangered and is on the red list for conservation. However if you are worried simply plant more forests and depopulate the UK. Perhaps we can have peasant shooting season to replace pheasant and grouse shooting.
@@GEMahler The UK population is indeed stable, stably low at around 350 pairs with localised declines and displacement, often due to persecution. The Peak District population adjacent to the Moscar Estate being a prime example. I'm glad you made reference to black grouse, as they are a species I observe regularly in North Yorkshire, County Durham and Cumbria and I'd say populations in these locations seem reasonably consistent in the several years I have been observing them. Besides, so what if goshawks (and foxes and mustelids, etc, etc) take a few? That's nature, a natural predator- prey relationship. Either way an illegal act has, in all likelihood, taken place here and the conduct of the '(cough, splutter) custodians of the countryside' in the film did their cause no favours either.
This not Joanne it's her son:
I'm not against shooting for game at all in this country, it's been going for hundreds of years... To tell you truth wild rabbit and pheasants is nice to eat. I've never had grouse but I bet it's nice on a plate..
and I think the killing of the raptors bird of prey is bad.... I am against our UK government in you allowing the killing of hundreds of Pitt bull dog's each year and the other band breed of dogs, when any dog can bite and be dangerouse.. You the UK government are not saints you no.
oh thank God they are not Gauß shooting
What you expect.? You think everyone there knows all about the things that happen around them..?
Not everyone up there is omniscient I don't reckon.. 🤯
Bo lox to the economy, & how much game hunting brings to our economy. Raptor Persecutors should carry harsher sentences. Game hunting Persecution, we need more trees & soon, bio diversity more important. Rivers more important. Grouse hunting not important to our country. Air quality important. Food & clean water important. Shelter from heat or cold of weather important.
Pheasants ar nt NATIVE Species.

@@jamamafegan4 not denial, just want to know for there are almost zero goshawks on the NYM but loads of other hawks such as sparrowhawks.
@@turquoiseowl _"there are almost zero goshawks on the NYM"_
That's kinda the fucking point. Jeez.
@@Teeb2023 no answers so more questions: Why does the 'hidden' camera move three times during the incident? Why are three jackdaws put in the trap, but only one remaining when the raptor arrives? Why does it take several minutes to kill the raptor (going by the movement of the sunlight on the hill)? Smells more than a bit fishy. Staged.
@@turquoiseowl Not true at all. There is a well watched raptor watchpoint adjacent where goshawks are seen reasonably often. I speak from experience of course. And does it matter what species of hawk it is? It's still illegal. If it is indeed staged as you confidently assert, the man in question and the industry has nothing to worry about.

Seems like they were trespassing on private land and causing nuisance which is an offence. In addition, the person being filmed could quite easily be one of the trespassers. Just a normal anti- shooting trick and not a credible one.
And Luke Steele is a jail bird. Fancy having him as spokesperson. The film crew and antis illegally obtained a Forestry Commission key to access land in order to film.

It’s ridiculous that this can be made by channel 4 and all the people that see this and think that every gamekeeper kills endangered birds. Its just misleading for members of the public that do not shoot game as 99.9% of gamekeepers do not kill endangered birds. Although, those that do should be prosecuted.
