The reason I can't give up VLC is that whenever I watch foreign movies, I don't have to worry about subtitles looking giant and ugly. I can resize the subtitle font size while playing the video.
FOSS softwares like these are great entry point for Linux as they can help you transitioning to Linux more easily by not relying windows-only proprietary software. Also, I'm pretty sure "Okular" is pronounced as "Ocular" since KDE loves to use K as their naming scheme.
Great video! Lots of open source goodies I'd never heard of before. Just an FYI that there's currently controversy about the new owners of Audacity now installing telemetry in the software, and being dodgy about how it's being incorporated. Lots of info available by searching "Audacity controversy". Fortunately, there are forks. One example is Ocenaudio, which is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
You know that you wont get much views or good&helpful comments when your channel's community is just blindly linux fan without respecting others. I mean I am using Linux for about 1 year, but the specific part of the community which disturbs people if they don't think what they think is something I really hate. (Large amount of this guys are in the "toxic" part of the Arch community). I love the Linux community which is kind and here to help people or improve Linux to make it better. That is why I really switched. It has changed me to think more positively, wanted to give help to others etc. You are free to use/do what you want in Linux. This is what I really love. But you are free as much as you don't interrupt others freedom. This is what I think the freedom means. What do you think about this, I want to listen :) IMHO, You can't say "dumb" to somebody that uses something like Linux mint or because s/he doesn't use what you use. You are not better than the other person because you use arch etc. (this is just and example for general case.) For example, you can hate ubuntu. But distracting people who use Ubuntu doesn't make you a better better person. Even the opposite. And you can't deny that ubuntu helped Linux more than YOU while you're just hanging around with your impulsive speech (in general cases). I don't defend Ubuntu here, this is just most common situation to give as an example. And what about non-technical users or newcomers to Linux? I hate when they're underestimated by the toxics. Are you happy when you make other people hate? :/ I just want to see more happy penguins in community, is it a lot ;)?
Oh no I didn't. It's a great message. This is why I do Windows videos here and there. There is no better way to slowly bring someone to the Linux community than to have them follow you because of a Windows tutorial. Shuting down and being disrespectful to those who use Windows will keep the Linux adoption rate as low as it is. And I agree on the distro take. I love Ubuntu and all the "noob" distros. Heck I use the most user friendly version of Arch you can get. (Manjaro) Thanks for your comment. 🐧🐧
Tried MPV, but it crashed a bunch of times. Used VLC for many years until I discovered MPC-HC and never looked back. Other than that, it's a great list and I found some new stuff that I didn't know before.
@@tonyrulez69 Free as in freedom (FOSS / GNU licensing), not the price. This video is about free (FOSS) and open source applications on Windows, not apps that don't cost anything.
oh, this video contains FOSS apps only, i had the idea that Brave ( 1:15 ) was not FOSS, so i thought the video contained other non-FOSS apps too. But i just found out today that brave browser is FOSS. so, yeah, will be trying pencil project (:
A value my phone-desktop browser bookmarks synchronization a lot, I "can't live" without google chrome because of it. Does firefox have a mobile version?
Unfortunately, it seems Pencil Project stopped being updated Last release was from 2019 There's a branch going on, but nothing official nor released it seems
Notepad++ or Notepads ( by Jackie Liu ) both are open source and really fast to work with and takes less resources. Ive switched from MS Notepad to Nodepads and its a blast.
How's VSCodium performing against VSCode? I'm a Linux user wanting to go a step further into open source and I'd want something good enough to handle different development tools since I'm still a student doing web, mobile, and desktop development. EDIT: Btw thanks for all the FOSS you shared, even Linux users like me will benefit from these since I haven't heard of Krita and PhotoGIMP yet.
It's the same performance without Microsoft's telemetry. VSCode is open source but the package released by Microsoft isn't exactly open source. They are the exact same source base and updated at the same time.
My problem with VLC is that every update it seems to be more broken and with fewer features Plugins are constantly stop working, and I got tired of videos not catching up, even on fresh installations I'm super looking forward mpv and its front ends. I still don't think they match VLC when it was at its peak, but it's getting close
The color correction in your talking head sections is quite cold, you look really really pale. I noticed it at 18:10 or so. Just something to think about I guess, if you don't mind personally then it's not a problem.
Don't understand about Firefox, there's nothing special about, it doesn't have any special functionality, and its soo ugly... I see one positive, security.
By default, Firefox isn't great in terms of privacy. Firefox is pretty horrid by default in general... you can change the theme tho, to make it look more like you want.
Nothing can replace Adobe and there's lots of reasons to make office mandatory. For example, macro to create invoice and later on print it won't work with libre office. And no, again, nothing can rival Adobe in workflow efficiency and therefore quality.

Internet: Brave, Firefox
Development: VScodium, MinGW
Media: mpv, VLC, MakeMKV
Email: MailSpring, Thunderbird
Image Editing: Krita, GIMP, Darktable
Vector Graphics: Inkscape, Pencil Project

@Dio Titus True but when theres a open source alternative of similar capability, I'll choose FOSS any day
for media player, mpc-hc is apparently free and open source. but its windows only.

Great helpful video, Thanks. Just suggest you add links to the software in info.
would be nice if you would, in the description, list the applications and the urls to get them
I use all three, Linux, Windows and Mac (but mostly Linux) on a daily basis and I would love to see a video like this but for open source mac programs
why use all 3?

linux good
windows bad

not at all , win10 is superior to linux and will be in the comming years , maybe in a decade linux will be an alternative
