LACKADAISY (Pilot)
It's 1927 and Prohibition is the law of the land. For Rocky, Freckle and Ivy, the night shifts are never dull.
LACKADAISY, based on a comic series by Tracy J. Butler, was directed by Fable Siegel, produced by Iron Circus Animation, and made by a crew of more than 160 skilled artists across the world. The project was funded by Kickstarter backers, aided by Patreon supporters, and fueled by fan viewership and enthusiasm during the course of its production.

I love how cats are supposed to land on their feet, but Rocky only ever seems to land on his face
That's what happens when you're constantly putting your foot in your mouth.
It's like that scene in Madagascar.🤭
Man, what kind of cat is he?
I think he subcribes more to quantum mechanics than Einsteins general theory of gravity.
One thing that I feel like is worth noting: if the lights are off in the quarry, then everybody’s eyes are adjusted to the darkness. But if the lights are on, their eyes adjust to the light and now there are shadows everywhere for you to hide in.
Yeah, turning on the power was the best decision to make. Not only does having power to actually use the machinery work out well, but the shadows does help with hiding
also the light coming from multiple directions messes with depth perception and aim. It was a good call.
ProZD had been doing fandubs of Lackadaisy like... 5-9 years ago. No wonder he got in with his handsome Mordecai voice 😅
For real? That’s cool
I rly like how they implement cat-like behavior, such as Mordecai hissing at the water or Freckle fighting Rocky's tail or trilling when Ivy offers him the whiskey to try it. It adds so much to their characters and i want to protect them all lol.
Or Rocky doing that little pouncy thing at the bottles.
Or the little ear and tail flicks that Mordecai does.
and the tail flicking when they're irritated
and Rocky's tail flicking and swishing when he's having 'crazy time'.
Fun fact: the article Mitzi May is reading out at 18:00 regards the death of Isadora Duncan (1878-1927), a real-life dancer and choreographer of international renown, who really was done in by her scarf - it got tangled in the wheel of the car she was riding in. (I don't know, however, if Tracy Butler has ever drawn her as a cat.)
Everytime im reading comments, im seeing new things explained. From animation, to historical facts, to speech and music from that time.
@arnas159ds yeah, Butler's research is astounding. I learned from the comic that in '27 it was illegal to despose of food waist in the drains because garbage disposals didn't exist yet.
So fun fact: This is how ProZD started making a name for himself! He started off doing fandubs of this comic with that exact character!
The ‘Sentimental about old times’ comment was about Mordecai’s former employment with the Lackadaisy Speakeasy under the Little Daisy Cafe. It’s founder and Mitzi’s late husband Atlas was his mentor, which is partly the reason he didn’t shoot Ivy since she’s Atlas’s goddaughter. There’s also the fact that he grew up with two to three sisters, as someone on Tumblr pointed out.
33:42 The 2 cats that were assisting Mordecai are siblings.
They even say "brother of mine help me up" here 17:44
funny detail, that construction that the protagonists destroyed, had the name Sable on its sign, the name of the brown cat in the bar, they basically destroyed his property, and at the end of the credits you can see him arriving at the whole area... . surprised?
I'd describe that look as "devastated".
Much like the quarry itself!
OOOH so that's why he was so curious about the dynamite and heavy machinery Rocky mentioned :')
Dunno why, but I really like the "Nah. Just more glass," exchange
You should really read the comic. It's totally worth it.
Absolutely going to look into it :)
@IAmZamber it is my all-time favorite webcomic. Tracy J. Butler is a gift. And yes I said webcomic. Dont need to spend any overpriced stores. All you need to search engine and *boom* the magic is there.
There's not nearly enough of it out yet though, I caught up way faster than i was ready to 😢
@@SpiderandMosquito ok but tbf, I feel like paying money for this comic is worth it. Gorgeous art, and the original comic is free so you’re supporting the creator.
And since it’s a western release, it’s one of the only webcomics that can be feasibly purchased (webtoons and manwha are too expensive & don’t get full releases)
@M A. well, obviously, I want physical copies and them to sell. They exist and deserve it. I just wanted it to be clear that it is a webcomic and is therefore easier to access than physical books often are
As a bit of a history nerd, I really can't wait to see a cartoon centered around prohibition
You'd love the webcomic. The artist does do her research.
Also, don't worry. Lackadaisy is getting a five-episode season. Funding is ending soon.
You know it´s a good pilot when you immediately ask for more.
5:56-6:01 Just so you know, this scene states that Rocky and Freckle are actually cousins.
Mordecai, the cat with glasses was, in fact, vocied by prozd
I've got those trained ears for him :P
@IAmZamber also, rocky is voiced by Michael Kovac, aka N from murder drones and angel dust from hazbin hotel
Edit: oh yeah, and Jax from tadc
Season 1 is now funding! If we can get to 1,500,000 we can get mini episodes! And if we get to 2,000,000 we get Blu Rays! And plushies of the entire Lackadaisy cast with poll votes!!
6:12 Burke and Hare were British grave robbers (they sold the bodies to medical schools) who later moved on to making bodies instead of stealing them. One was hanged and the other was let go because he testified against the one they hanged, but I can’t remember which was which
If i had a nickel for every time micheal kovach voiced a protagonist in an indie animation I'd have three nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened three times
(For the people who don't know, the three are: N from murder drones, Rocky in lackadaisy and (used to play) angel dust in hazbin hotel
First with angel dust from hazbin hotel
Then with n from murder drones
And finally rocky from lackadaisy 😅
Michael Kovach is to indie cartoons what Nolan North is to video games.
it also happen they are the 3 most popular youtube show
I recently fell in love with Murder Drones and N is to blame.
@@ArashiAiko Same!
I'm blown away from just how incredible this turned out. The concept is really interesting, and the animation, character designs, sound effects, and voice acting are all incredible. Freckles is definitely my favorite character. His voice actor did a great job making him sound cool and cute, or completely unhinged when he needed to be. Fable Siegel and the rest of the team did an amazing job bringing this world from webcomic to webvideo. I hope it's just the first of what's to come.
This show already has 7m views since it went up, it's really blowing up, would love to see it expanded into a full blown series
I'm very glad you loved it! I've been following Lackadaisy since maybe 2010 or 2011. It's a wonderful comic.
This animation is incredible and I really hope it becomes a series one day. There are a few differences in the story compared to what's been happening in the comic, but overall they're still the same.
I recommend reading the comic to really get into it, but here's the simplest way I'd summarize the stuff that wasn't mentioned in the short:
Lackadaisy was a very popular speakeasy, but after the owner, Atlas May, was murdered the whole place fell on hard times. Now his widow, Mitzi (or Ms. M as she's been called) is trying her best to bring back its glory days.
Rocky is technically jusr supposed to be the violinist in the band, but he's now helping out as a bootlegger. Freckle (real name Calvin and also Rocky's cousin) is the "muscle" of the group, and he has some trigger happy tendencies. Ivy is Atlas' goddaughter who reveled in the nightlife of Lackadaisy, but now she's helping out as another bootlegger.
Mordecai works for the rival speakeasy/gang Marigold, but he has some interesting history with Lackadaisy. Nico and Serafine are siblings who also work for Marigold and they definitely enjoy the chase and murder over anything else. Asa Sweet (the guy in the post credits) is the leader of Marigold.
Wick (real name Sedgwick Sable) is a rich loyal patron of Lackadaisy who has a thing for Mitzi. He was the guy who owns the quarry that Rocky destroyed.
Viktor used to be the muscle for Lackadaisy, but recent events now have him as a very scary bartender.
I love Lackadaisy! The moment I heard Rocky’s beautiful Serenade of The Mississippi River it melted my heart. I feel I relate to Rocky the most, especially in his love of Poetry, Music and Art. Lackadaisy has inspired me to return to Art and hone my skills so that I can bring my Creations and Projects to life. I’m looking forward to more Lackadaisy and seeing what the future holds. 😻
That rich guy in the bar was called “sable” which is the name on the quarry. So that “what dynamite” was him realising his quarry got wrecked.
For those of you who haven’t read the comic, guess what Rocky does right after saying “Are you questioning my logic?” (No spoilers please comic readers)
Rocky running off gave me midnight cat zoomies energy
I have seen the opening scene dividing opinions. Glad to see you liked it! As a violinist I have to say that it really managed to grab my attention (that violin playing was incredibly well animated!) And I may or may not have written an analysis of Rocky's poem (instead of doing my actual schoolwork...) A poem was a really brilliant way to introduce Rocky's character to the audience.
The only downside to this is that we’ll inevitably have to wait years for any more.
buy merch to shorten the time
I guess we'll just have to pass the time by re-reading the comic again.
not really as the comic is ongoing so you wont have to wait long for the next part (this story is mostly standalone too meaning just a taste of what happened) unless you mean animated.
@@danmiy12 yea, nothing against the comic but animation is my preferred medium.
Seems the same with Hazbin Hotel, if there will be anymore
19:05 The Cat Man in the portrait is Mitzi May's Dead Husband, Atlas May.
The way I screamed seeing this pop up BLESS YOU
The beginning poetry gets better every time you hear it.
the underdrawings / construction lines sometimes being visible was not only a deliberate creative choice, but actually required more work from the animators, not less. the creator tracy said that the process (digital, rather than traditional) necessarily removed those lines, so they actually had to go and add them in to make them flicker in and out in certain places as an effect.
the comic is superlative both in terms of just stunning art, as well as the execution of designs, story, tone....everything, and with mysteries that enhance the strong characters at the core. this animation had the crowdfunded backing that it did to support this quality and length because of the comic already having so many enthused supporters, deservedly. i'd been reading it for ages, and years back watched a few fandubs the creator shared, and only after this animation released did i realize that's when i first encountered prozd's work, not vine or anything lol....other commenters have said that those fandubs are actually how he first started to get attention / a following, and of course he'd often voice mordecai, so i love knowing that came around like this.
11:56 - Cats frequently go insane over things they get excited about. Very much on point with these guys.
So glad to see more ppl react to Lackadaisy!! It deserves so much love! Also excited for the comic to return
Mordecai uses a colt 1911 chambered in 45acp (despite his misses shown here) he is considered a dead eye shot with it
Having the opening scene be Rocky's Mississippi Monologue Poem was a clever idea. Hopefully you'll look into the comic too!
ZAMMM SEASON 1 TEASER FOR LACKADAISY DROPPEDDDD
Definitely recommend reading the comic+supplementary materials, then going back and watching this short again. Gives so much added insight to the characters and their actions.
Among the numerous bits of creativity and inclusion of of skill, the unsung (rarely recognized but HIGHLY necessary) heroes of animation are the Clean-Up Artists. One of note is Ashley Nichols, who did clean-up for Hazbin Hotel, has her own projects in the works, is dating Michael Kovach (Rocky AND Angel Dust VA), and has a streaming channel called Hunicast. It’s like a talk show, but with art, and unhinged hilarity.
Her channel is Ashley Nichols Art, co-hosted with Kovach, and often has guests on just to goof around. Including Vivziepop, and the creator of Lackadaisy. Voice Actors from Beastars, Dragon Ball Super, Aggretsuko, and Helluva Boss.
It’s an impressive growth from the humble beginnings before the Hazbin Hotel pilot to an explosion of followers and donators to the channel. 35:52
Thanks for this reaction :) .
Lackadaisy is a wonderful surprise.
(You missed the last scene. And Rocky aimed for the sign.)
I love the Lackadaisy pilot! It's interesting that it takes place during the era of prohibition America! A time period which gangsters gained fame!
Fun Fact!
Rocky shares the same voice actor as the character Angel Dust from the Hazbin Hotel pilot. His name is Michael Kovach.
The teeny tiny pistol Freckle uses is called a Kolibri it was designed by an Austrian watch maker.
It’s a little big for a Kolibri, it’s more likely a Colt 1908 vest pocket.
@@hyperrustynail I’m sorry but I simply have to disagree I compared the the two real pistols to the animated version and I hold that it is a kolibri
@@patch1752 I'm in the Vest Pocket camp. The trouble with it being a Kolibri is that the Kolibri is quite rare, with only about 1,000 specimens made compared to the Vest Pocket's 400,000. A rare pistol, produced in Europe, being used as a holdout/emergency weapon by bootleggers in Missouri doesn't seem as likely a situation as a mass-produced American-made model. Besides, the barrel on Freckle's little peashooter is too big for a Kolibri, meaning that it's more likely to be the larger .25ACP round, instead of the 2mm Kolibri.
@@PowerSkunk92so it's a varient of Kolibri or a gun that has the same designs as the Kolibri?
@@Junweitrustnobody1403 Neither. It's a Colt 1908 Vest Pocket.
I read that title as I watched LACKADAISY and LOVED LACKADAISY. That's funny to me for some reason
17:58 It's A Cover Up For The Lackadaisy Speakeasy. 🌼♣️
Hey Zamber! I'm happy you loved it! The Season 1 teaser actually just dropped! You should react to it to spread the word, they're crowdfunding to make the first season of it.
They reached their first goal 11 minutes after the backerkit launched, but that's just for episode 1. It's still a long way from funding the whole season.
Ivy is a cutie and i want more of her and Freckles!!❤
Cheers for covering Lackadaisy, as it was a good excuse to watch it again!
Love the video! Side note: The rifle Sera uses is a somewhat customized M1918, also known as the Browning Automatic Rifle(BAR) chambered in .30-06. The "Tommy Gun" Freckle uses is an M1921 "Thompson" submachine gun. And the handgun Mordecai uses is a Colt M1911. The Kolibri has already been covered in another comment. The revolver Neco uses is unknown to me, though it might be a Webley Mk IV. My thing isn't revolvers, my focus is more on semi-auto and full auto handguns, so don't take my word on it.
13:09 That is a Palm pistol. Good for concealing, but sadly are no longer made in modern day. Same with the ammo for it as well.
7:51 If by "that voice actor" you mean Mr. Stickinthemud in the back seat, that's because it's ProZD.
Ah, so you (kind of) worked it out for yourself. Yes, it sounded like him, because it was him.
yayyy I was excited to see you react to this!! I love this pilot so much!!
It took me a bit to notice Wick is the one who owned the mine Rocky and his crew decimated
Hope this gets more animation and gets to go to series! The comic i never read but i will and hope fans gets this to more episodes!
I do have to say this this has been a work in progress for seven years and I hope they can go far with this because I would love to see this series go off I know it will take a lot of time but I’m willing to wait because this pilot and everything was amazing ❤
Yeah Freckles and Rocky have a few loose screws as you can tell, but I'm here for Ms. Mitzi!
11:57 I guess you could say that Rocky is the one off the Rocker, am I right?🤣🤣🤣
I like this a lot more than Hazbin Hotel or Helluva Boss. It's still clearly made for adults, but it's not overloaded with gore and profanity. I think there was only one swear word, "Hell", and the violence was only as graphic as it needed to be for the sake of the story. If this doesn't get picked up, then someone needs to be fired.
Absolutely!
Well, they're two different kinds of shows telling two different stories
29:20 the funny thing is, they did use toonboom if u look in the second to last credits panel XD but yea point still stands, the guide lines usage is super cool
YAYYYY! i'm so excited you've watched this!! it's one of my favorite webcomics and i think it's just crazy that so many people are watching the pilot!!!
I think what we saw after Miss M opened her eyes was either the past before prohibition or it's happening in the now, since it's a speakeasy.
Neither. It’s her imagining what the speakeasy would be like in modern times if it was like how it was during its heyday/Atlus was still there.
We know that cuz it’s bustling and we see Atlus’ “ghost”, but also cuz Freckle is there on stage. And he doesn’t join until after Atlus’ death.
10:06 Freckle, Okay I'll be friends.😺
Freckle With A gun? Get him away from me! 🙀
Rocky being the soliloquy-reciting feline of the trio has you thinking for yourself.
I like how I was able to reconize Sungwon Cho's (ProZD) voice in the pilot
4:51 Okay, In The 1920's, Bootleggers Would transport booze via boat or train and Bury the Booze in boxes calling them Dead Drops.
Fun fact: Rocky has the same voice actor as Angel Dust
Angel*
Zamber, hi dear friend; hi hi; I am so excited to see you see reacting to LACKADAISY; then again… I can’t wait to see your reaction!
This should be the future of animated ahows
Thanks for checking this out! Supporting indie projects is always fun! I do recommend trying the comic to see the characters in their fleshed-out story glory (and also, literally; Tracy's art is INSANELY detalied in every panel and the character designs had to be dialed back a ton for ease of animation.) It is def more of a "PG-13" story tho. It's about criminal smugglers with no qualms about murder for the sake of the illicit alcohol business, after all. All of the characters need therapy lol.
And yep, you've got a good ear! I think the fandom would've been disappointed if ProZD didn't voice Mordecai, tbh. He's a long-time Lackadaisy fan and did a good bunch of fan-dubs of some of the author's funny side-comics (which are often Mordecai-centric), a few years back. So he was already fan-favourite for the role, when this project got off the ground.
What kills me is I only found this comic a few moths ago, while scrolling thru Webcomic's (the app) offerings. Meanwhile, the first chapters of the Lackadaisy webcomic predate smart phones haha. Tracy started posting it online wayyy back in 2006. I missed all that sweet sweet early fandom hype ahh!! It's lovely to see how her work has grown and is beloved enough to fund a kickstarter animation like this tho; a true indie triumph!
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAZZZZ! I finally feel I was part of a suggestion group!
speaking of off their rocker, I think the voice actor for Rocky is the same for N from Murder Drones (another great youtube series). If not they sound pretty similar *edit* yes, it is the same voice actor.
Fun fact do you know the voice of Rocky is the pilot voice actor of Angel Dust
I created a cool Lackadaisy OC. Her name is Jenni Graves. She's a newbie at Marigold and Mordecai's protégé and love interest.
Jenni is a black-footed cat (the deadliest feline on earth due to having a hunting success rate of 60% or higher). Yes, she's an assassin.
Jenni was forced to witness the death of her father, Bruce, when she was 8, by the hand of a masked gangster. Jenni was almost shot herself but her mom saved her. Now as an adult, Jenni is looking for her dad's killer, making a name for herself as an assassin for hire (implying she's killed everyone of her past employers who were mobsters), and has set her sights on Asa Sweet. However, she develops feelings for Heller as they have several similarities. Sorry, just had to share this with someone. None of my friends like Lackadaisy.
22:28 The 1920's Were An Era Of Gross Drinks.
A Sunset Rose Cocktail Should Be Made With An Ounce Of Canadian Rye With Strawberries And Apple Juice. 🥃🍓🍎
Didn’t the 1920’s basically create cocktails? Cuz the booze tasted so bad they needed to mix it with other drinks to fix the flavor? Lol
I also hear it normalized low quality alcohol in general lol
@@ma.2089
Cocktails had been pretty popular after Jerry Thomas’s cocktail guide in 1862 but yes prohibition did change up the reason why you would make a cocktail compared to drinking it neat.
Mostly gin since it’s easy to whip up some white lightning and flavor it with coriander and juniper etc.
"A-are we defiling - oh we are defiling a grave..."
Me: yeah, they're not good people. :)
Yessssss I’ve been waiting for this!
34:12 They Are Brother And Sister.
First, Awesome reaction! Second, I know this fun fact has been stated before but, I noticed not a lot of people talk about it. The voice actor for Rocky is the same for Angel Dust in Hazbin Hotel. At least for the Pilot. Sadly, he was let go. I don't know if it was before he took on the role of Rocky or after. I just know that he was let go and the sources are Google and the Hazbin Hotel community as a whole. That being said, as sad as it that Angel's voice might not be the same, I'd gladly take him voicing Rocky for the rest of this potential series!
I'm glad it's set in St. Louis.
It's mostly ignored in entertaiment.
Okay…I must be psychic. During my shift today, I was thinking of what it would be like if Zamber reacted to this! If a Vox Machina reaction is on the horizon too, I’m gonna flip.
6:00 BTW! The Spirits They Buried Out Is Booze Not Ghosts.
Freckle and Ivy are 18 (babies uwu) and Rockie is 22 (if I remember well)
Close rocky is 23
@@dogsvibes ahh thank you TwT
The voice actor for Mordechai is actually ProZD!
Just subscribed to your channel after enjoying your reaction to the Miraculous Ladybug Movie and this with my chosen (aka husband with out the marriage license). We love your comments. Like I agree about hand drawn animation
I have a theory that the cat girl is the cat gentleman's daughter (yes they have names and I have ADHD)
Lol not sure what ADHD has to do with names but it’s hard to understand what you’re saying when there’s a ton of cat gentlemen in this story lol. Who r u referring to lol
@@ma.2089 Lmfao sorry I was referring Mordecai (as the cat gentleman, cause in my opinion he's the most gentleman-est there) and the cat girl being Ivy (oh my god I gotta edit my comment I just realized how confusing this is) (Also I mentioned the ADHD because it gives my r e a l l y shitty memory lose and apparently I was too lazy to just look up their names lol)
15:17 Yes, Rocky Is 11 Kinds Of Stupid. 💣💥 Someone Please Lock Him In A Looney Bin In A Straitjacket! 🙀😱🙀😱
Isn't Ivy just adorable?
The charleston is quite unknown cause of its age
“Keep confounding! Keep confounding!”
As a Missourian I took the accent as a insult!🥲
32:37 I’m so glad you said that. That was my initial thought when looking at Freckle as a character. In a weird way he’s somewhat similar to Moxie from Helluva Boss since he’s so ch a nice guy thrust into a very violent environment where dangerous things happening 24/7. Also, their interactions with their respective “Love Interest” ( ie Ivy in this show and Millie from Helluva Boss). A nice couple that you’re hoping get together in the end. Yet Helluva Boss already have Moxie and Millie already married and working to keep it that way.
Overall, I enjoyed watching this Pilot episode and can’t wait to see what happens next. You’re reaction was entertaining to watch and hopefully if more episodes come out I’ll be sure to keep watching you react to more Lackadaisy. Keep up the good work 👏👍😁👍❤️🎥🍿🍍🥥🍻🇺🇸✨🌙☀️✨🎉🍵🍰✅🙏.
I've been reading the Webtoon ever since I saw this and I gotta say, it's pretty freaking good.
There are spoilers in the comic, but surprisingly despite it having been around so long it's actually not that far into the story, so... spoilers exist there, but there isn't THAT much.
If you liked Lackadaisy, I’d recommend A Fox in Space as well. It got its 2nd episode recently.
21:44 No, Only Frat Boys Would Drink Outta The Bottle. Drinking Out Of A Glass Means Classy. 🥃
Did you just call a 1911 a glock
Zamber I would so recommend you watch Murder Drones by Glitch Productions, if you loved this you’ll super love that!
I think Ivy is the only sane person in the trio.
Im really pissed that you called that m1911 colt a glock. GLOCKS NEVER EXISTED IN 1927
