- The Brassie is a well known fly, and has been a staple in many nymph fisherman's box. It can mimic an annelid, and even some other types of sub surface bugs. The problem when tying them so small, is that the wire will be tough to tie perfectly without that higher spine in the center. This method solves that issue and also makes tying this fly much quicker.
Here are the materials I used to tie this fly.
Hook: Lightning Strike SE7 in size 24 - www.theflyfishi...
Wire: Small Ultra Wire in red - amzn.to/2ydvE78
Thread: Veevus 16/0 in black - www.jsflyfishin...
Dubbing: Super-Fine Dubbing in Black - amzn.to/2iKoTCW
Adhesive: Solarez "Bone Dry" UV curing resin - solarez.com/pro...
If you want to buy this pattern tied by me, I am selling them on eBay in 12 packs. www.ebay.com/i...

You make it look easy McFly! Nice one. I have a spot in the Sierras where this would kill 'em!
Thank you! I tie tons of these for work. They work awesomely on the San Juan. I don't make them look easy, they really just are that easy. Give them a try!
I love this me and my friend are huge creek fishers so we catch alot of suckers chubs and brim and use tiny flies, this will DEFIANATLY be added to my fly box arsenal!
Glad you like it! Let me know how it works for you.
The best channel of fly tying!!😃
+nacho Fishing thank you! :)
Great simple tie man. Headed out today and landed some nice dark colored up steelies
Nice! Where at? I know you told me once before...
McFly Angler in the Buffalo, NY area. We got our first snow yesterday
Cool! I think we have a few more weeks till we get snow here.
Happy Friday Shawn.
You too Curtis!
How do you fish your midges? Maybe you could do a technique video of it? Trying to get into midge fishing. Thanks!
+Dave Hermann sure, I’ll try. Give me some time on it as I have a few videos in line right now.
As for midge fishing, usually it’s under an indicator, but sometimes I just high stick. Mending is key, since you have to have a natural drift. I usually will put an attractor type pattern on first, then drop to a small midge. But that all can change depending on conditions/river.
McFly Angler thanks!
What do you want to catch with a 24 size hook?
Biggest trout I’ve caught on that size was a 19” rainbow
can you make a video on tying a baby bass? we don't have many streams to fish here in OK.
Baby bass Streamer? Maybe in the near future. I’ll try and look into making one
Do you wear some kind of magnified reading glasses to tie something that tiny?
nope... I tie up to size 26 regularly at work. But if you need them, use them. This pattern, along with a few others are easy enough this small.
Where do you find the really small emerger, scud, nymph hooks to buy, size 24 and smaller. I can find a few 22s.
It’s getting harder... lol! Fly artist has size 24... www.flyartist.com/collections/daiichi-hooks/products/daiichi-1130-wide-gape-scud-hook?variant=7318375104571
a lot of people tie a small fly on an oversized hook . Some say the fish kind of ignore the extra bare hook. SO one can take advantage of the better hooking with a slightly oversized hook compared to the fly. Experiment as usual.
Is small wire smaller than brassie sized?
Yes, brassie is larger than medium but smaller than large
Is head cement or up curing resin a necessity
On the back end of the wire yes. I mean you can catch one or two fish on it without it, but a tooth will catch the edge and unravel it if you don’t cement the back
what do brassies imitate?
Depends on the color you tie them in. They are one of those patterns that kinda mimic a wide range without specifically mimicking anything in particular. Tied with red, it will mimic an annelid. Black, gray, dark brown, etc it can mimic midge pupa. Olive color it can mimic a caddis larvae. Etc....
Thanks for the advice!
Glad to help
What?!?! No underwater footage?!?! Lol
Ohhhhhhh, totally forgot to do it... ;)
