It’s good Gallop was able to stay with family. It does make me sad to think of these old dogs that have devoted their lives to their person, suddenly rehomed and living with new people in their final years.
When Molly said Gallop just wanted his mom…that broke my heart a bit.
( I fully get that each dog is different and not moving out would cause more distress for some dogs.)

A lot of times the guide dog puppy raiser who raised them will take them back if that happens. I adopted a guide dog puppy who didn’t make it fully through training and had a good friend who raised them and had several retired guide dogs as well.

Humans will always find ways to use everything for their personal gain and make excuses for the other parties sacrifice to feel ok about it. It's the way the world works.

@@lilleoelleyes! The first person that the dog gets offered to after the blind persons family, is the puppy raiser. My husband raised a guide dog puppy his senior year of high school and when we got married he retired from guiding and came back to live with us. The dog knew my husband, and they both had a really sweet (and crazy) reunion! It was like they never left eachother.

As a mostly deaf person, I usually sleep downstairs on the coach with my dog so he can alert me if "bad guys" come. (No plan after that, considering I would have to find my glasses (also legally blind without correction) and hearing aides to do anything, but I do know where my golf clubs are!) Anyway, a couple of years ago he showed signs of not wanting to sleep on the couch with me anymore, which he used to love. He turned 16 in June and as a puppy we used to have to sing "Good Night Buddy" a la "Good Night Ladies" to make him go to his bed for sleep. Now, he puts himself in his bed crate by about 9 pm, and gets mad at us if we don't close the crate and put a blanket over it, because bed time is also "end of tour" for him and he knows he doesn't have to protect anyone. He still does his morning and night patrol of the yard religiously, and holds court at the local state park as the King giving time to his minions, but he is slowing down. It's sad to see, but also nice that he's making his own boundaries now. As a very abused rescue as a puppy, he has a strong, protective personality. I always tell people he's too ornery to pass before 26; St. Francis can wait.

My friend called it a bargain with sorrow. Reminds of a poem my Rudyard Kipling (a dog lover also).
wrote “The Power of a Dog”.
      Rudyard Kipling, 1865 - 1936
There is sorrow enough in the natural way
      From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Buy a pup and your money will buy
      Love unflinching that cannot lie-
      Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
      Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.
When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet’s unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find-it’s your own affair-
But … you’ve given your heart to a dog to tear.
When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!).
When the spirit that answered your every mood
      Is gone-wherever it goes-for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.
We’ve sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we’ve kept ’em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long-
So why in-Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Awww, I’m sad about Gallop. It’s interesting that you didn’t feel the devotion from Elton. As a sighted person, I think his devotion to you was obvious even during training. He wanted to be close to you then, and still he looks at you with such devotion. However, I am not doubting your feelings because you live with him.

I'm wondering if it's a reflection of her own feelings. If after having felt so devoted to so many dogs and they've all ended sadly over the years, that she's staying a big more distant from Elton as well. Which is entirely understandable. I think having Gallop around staying with the family doesn't help, it's great for Gallop, but Elton will always suffer in comparison.

Hey Molly! I just wanted to pause and say a huge thank you for everything I’ve learned from you over the years. I finally had a chance to put some of it into practice and it made an interaction with a blind veteran so much more meaningful and comfortable. I got hired last month at our local Veteran’s home, working in the admissions department, helping vets and their families apply for residency. Part of that process is a conversation with them just before they come in, to better get to understand them as a human and their needs. We get a lot of questions about this interview during the admission process, so as part of my training I sat in on one with a blind gentleman. During the interview and afterwards when we were showing him around, everything I’ve learned about how to communicate and be actually helpful while maintaining the dignity of the blind person played a huge role. He seemed nervous at first but knowing how to talk to him and guide him with my elbow and describe things in a helpful way really set him at ease and he seemed to be having a great time by the end of it. The two ladies who usually run the interview seemed impressed at my knowledge and comfort in helping him out. At the end they even felt comfortable enough to allow me to finish showing him around by myself because they had other appointments to get to and he had more questions. It was a honor to be able to serve a veteran who was also part of this community that I’ve learned to love and know so much more about thanks to you, Molly.

I have a senior dog and he's going through something similar to Gallup. He hit age 13 and it feels like a pretty sudden decline, like he was an old man but now he's really an OLD MAN. He's just a regular pet so I can't even imagine how much harder having to see that in your old guide dog, especially having to juggle both the bonds with him and Elton. I'm so glad you and Elton have finally bonded more. I hope for many good times for you and Elton John.

Hi Molly, Thank you so much for making this video. I rarely ever comment, but after having just completed training with my first guide this all feels so validating. I find myself struggling with some of the same feelings of trying to bond with the new dog. Anyways, thank you for providing this space for us to share our experiences.

I was so sad to come across your channel today and learn that gallop has passed. My heart is shattered for you all. I know he was so happy to have had you for his life- he loved you so much and was such a good doggy. 💙
Grateful I didn't have to go through the heartbreak of seeing and learning Ben with you, and losing Ben with you. I'm so sorry that happened. And I'm happy to hear he is doing well.

Thank you for sharing your experiences, it was really eye-opening to hear about your process of coming to understand what motivates Elton and what works for him and how to bond with him - I never realized there is so much thought and exploration that needs to go into that. Hearing you explain those things really puts into perspective why, other than the heartbreak of having to stop working with a previous dog, it's so difficult to transition between guide dogs. It really makes me wish dogs lived longer 🥺

Molly, I’m one of your first few thousand subs and I’ll tell you.. you are the ONLY creator that pulls my emotions out in just about every video. I laugh with you, get excited for you and get choked up and cry with you.. I’m not blind, I don’t own a dog at all (I’m a cat girl- FUN fact I requested that you draw a cat from memory in one of your VERY early videos and you did so - quite well 😆 !). I don’t know what it is, I obviously don’t KNOW you aside from videos, which is totally one sided. Maybe it is just your ability to express yourself and explain things but I truly root for you, feel for you and only wish the best for you, your doggies and your family. ❤ thanks for sharing bits of your story as well as educating us all. Take care!

Elton sounds so much like my German Shepherd Seeing Eye dog Ivy. You hit the nail in the head when you said how it’s hard to feel special when your dog loves everybody. Also like you she’s gotten better over the years. I know I’m seeing this video way late, but it’s actually one of my favorites of yours. I think it goes into so much of the struggles of what we as guide dog handler face and deal with every time we change dogs. I am currently still working. Ivy and I have applied for my next dog which will be number four for me and you know you have all the feelings and to watch war dog videos as the time gets closer least I find that’s what I do so here I am.

I feel for you with Gallup being 11 and old manning. I inherited my Mom's dog 8ish years ago, and he is now 13ish. A couple of weeks ago, he went still able to see, to falling off curbs and walking into cars. Shadows scare him now because he can't see a whole lot. I watched him trying to adjust and the complete confusion he was doing through the last few weeks as he is learning to memorize his outside world, and I just kept thinking of 14-year-old Molly. Wow! He has given me a lot of insight into what it must feel like. I knew he was losing his sight, but then it went overnight. One day he could see cars and curbs and the next day he was nose-diving off of them or into them. Curbs are hard for him because he is only 8 lbs. Well, they would be hard for you too because you trip and fall, he smacks his face into them, and falling off of them is falling! Losing him will be hard because he was my mom's dog though, and then when he moved in with me, he immediately recognized I needed help with my ADHD and started alerting me to things that I had started and not finished. He retired recently. He hired himself and then had to retire himself too. LOL

I never had any relationship with dogs but in the last few years my two sisters got dogs. And boy, they couldn't have more different personalities. One loves cuddles without end. He does this thing where if there's someone sitting and they leave their hand down for whatever reason, he gets underneath so they can pet him. He doesn't care if the person is a completely stranger. The other one, loves his ball. You can play with him and his ball for hours, but he never lets you pet him. He's also more of a introvert and he needs his time alone. And those are just pets, when you add the extra layer of being working dogs, things become increasinly more complex. It's really interesting to learn about this things. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for sharing all this. I am a veterinarian and I breed and show dogs. I have a bunch! Four in the kitchen. My dogs love everyone, but still, I’m their mom. Four dogs in the kitchen, they’re happy, pretty much doing sequential lap time.
I have a ten year old, my heart dog. So difficult watching them age.
Elton has so much coat, I would imagine he would prefer the cool floor.

Hey Molly! As usual, your videos provide a lot of great things to think about especially being an aspiring guide dog user working on cane skills. With that being said, a video with you explaining some guide dog tricks and techniques you mentioned early on in the video that have increased your independence or have just helped you in day-to-day life would be really helpful! I am in the process of gaining the skills for getting a guide and I am looking forward to working with a dog but I would also like to have some techniques or commands that could be really helpful that aren't taught during training.

I don't have dogs but I do have cats. They live with my parents and before I moved out for college they sorta treated everyone equally with a preference for my mom because she was home the most. Since having been away for awhile, whenever I come back home they are SO EXCITED to see me. I think that for my cats, and Elton as well, their people didn't feel overly special because they were always there so it's the sorta situation where you take someone for granted and then realize how much you care about them with some time apart. With most pets they get the time away from their owners to miss them and get very excited to see them again. Guide dogs, and especially Elton, never get that. When you were away for a bit I think he finally was given the time to miss you and miss guiding you and doesn't want to take you for granted again. In terms of Gallop, if you want to be able to give him some attention but can't when Elton is there, would you be able to give Gallop some love while Elton is eating and distracted? I don't know if the dogs eat at the same time so that might not be feasible. Also you could try your dad leading Gallop into the bathroom and you go in the bathroom to pee and shut the door so Elton is on the other side and is sad but understands - that way you can give Gallop some love there without Elton getting jealous. You're an amazing handler Molly and are so strong for everything you've gone through with your animals recently. You should be really proud of yourself

That's so awesome that Elton is good at finding posts and chairs. Sounds like he loves being a dog on a mission. :)
That's so sad that Gallop can only eat soft food and have digestive issues. I remember when my cat Marty was getting older. In the last two years of his life, he would eat food, but it would go through him so quickly. He would basically just eat, crap, pee and sleep and that wasn't much of a life for him. I just made sure he was as comfortable as possible with water, food and a bed, but it was so sad when he collapsed on the floor one day while eating his cat food and the poor guy was trying to still lick his food after falling over on the floor. I had to put him down in May 2020. I'll always miss him.

It’s so hard when your dog starts to age quickly. I just lost my German Shepard dingo mix. We rescued her when I was 11, I’m 27 now and we had her 16 wonderful years. At around 13 she started to rapidly age over about a year, then she stabilised for 2 years after that when she started heart medication, (she was slow and stayed around the house instead of buggering off down the farm half the day like she always used to but she was happy and wasn’t in any pain) then in last 2 months she stated to go down hill very quickly and was in some pain but is was managed with medication until last Saturday night when she didn’t want to get out of bed and Monday morning she stopped getting. Up at all and was in more pain than we could manage so we had to call a vet out and she was put to sleep. She was with me and supported me through. Cancer diagnosis and treatments, the loss of both my maternal grandparents (I was VERY close with both of them as they helped raise me after my dad left and lived on the next property over. Angi was super close with ,y grandy, he used to come over every day with a chicken neck for her and they loved each other and she used to follow him round as he worked on the farm)max well as my paternal grandmother, the loss of 3 friends and a boyfriend as well as loving on and playing with my 2 year old son. She was with me more than half my life and was my 8 year old jack russell mix’s best friend and mentor. I can’t imagine her not being here still.

How did they breed a dog with a wild dog from Australia?

    • @maddyspinks
      @maddyspinks Год назад

@@HeyItsZee_ dingos are really just non domesticated dogs, so can easily breed with other dog breeds, and as for being an Australian breed, I’m Australian and live in an area where although not super common there are a few wild dingos running around, probably coz I’m not too far from Frazer island where there is a very large population on dingos. She was a rescue from the RSPCA who said they thought she was German Shepard cattle dog mix. We always suspected she was part dingo as she was all orangey blond all over other than her white chest with no marking of either a German Shepard or cattle dog as well as her having a lot of dingo behavioural characteristics. About 6 years ago we had this guy in his late 60’s come over for some handy work, he took one look at her turned to us and said d”do you realise that your dog is at least part dingo?” We said we suspected and he told us that he was doing handy work for extra money cash in hand to top up his pension, he recently retired from an almost 40 year career breeding and raising dingos for zoos and nature parks and he was 100% certain she was at least part dingo, but recommended we do DNA testing to see how much. We ended up deciding to do the testing because we were curious and low and behold, she was a little over 60% dingo.

Privacy is how public figures protect themselves emotionally and physically. And she gave quite a bit of info when Ben wasn’t able to keep working, just not super specific and that’s honestly fair I think. I get wanting more but we need to remember that losing a guide dog in this way was extremely traumatic and opening up too much could hurt her healing.

Hey I just wanted to reach out and send you virtual gentle hugs if you wanted them, and say that I hear you and understand what you're saying. I feel for you as I have a 14-year-old guide dog right now. He's doing well, but, I can absolutely see the aging. Losing him will be a very sad day. I have to try and not think about it too much, stay in the moment And enjoy what I have. Also, my dog is quite Similar to yours as he loves and thrives on having firm rules and boundaries. I have found what works for us, is that if I want him to be up on the bed or what have you, he waits until he's invited, and he does respect that. Anyway, i'm so glad to hear that he's doing well. Just wanted to offer some words of encouragement and tell you that you've got this. ❤️

As a mom of 3 kids, and a dog mom of 2 (one dog at a time) can confirm, it takes a long time to adapt to them both. A pet dog isn't a whole year, much less is required of them. But the baby, yes, takes at least a year to adapt and bond.
