  • Driving through and exploring the border town of Calexico. This town is located in southern Imperial County, California. Situated on the Mexican border, it is linked economically with the much larger city of Mexicali, the capital of the Mexican state of Baja California. It is about 122 miles east of San Diego and 62 miles west of Yuma, Arizona.
    Calexico, along with six other incorporated Imperial County cities, forms part of the larger populated area known as the Imperial Valley.
    The name of the city is a portmanteau of California and Mexico. The originally proposed names were Santo Tomas or Thomasville. Mexicali is a similarly named city directly across the international border from Calexico, its name being a portmanteau of the words "Mexico" and "California".

    People who are from here are obviously going to say that this city/county is nice but as someone who moved here from a big city years ago it’s honestly the worst place in California to live in. It’s also ranked as the worst county in all California. There are no jobs here, it is corrupted, everything is going out of business, the healthcare here is horrible. The main hospital in El Centro (the neighboring city), sends you to San Diego due to being the closer medical facility. Which is 2 hours away. They are currently in the process of going bankrupt due to misused funds. Horrible air conditions due to pollution from factories and all the chemicals they use for all the fields and farms. As well the pollution from Mexico. (imperial county ranked with the county with more asthma cases as well). Everything is closing since this is the worst place to bring a business. If you go to the outlets in Calexico or the mall in El Centro, everything is closing. Also if you are Looking for a job here good luck because they only hire friends and family. Most people who grew up here tell me they are looking to leave and never come back. The best thing about the imperial valley is literally Mexico cause there’s more things to do over there than here. Also during the summer the temperatures rise up to 120s - 130s. Another neighboring city imperial got caught manipulating votes during the elections for city council as well. When people come here and ask what’s to do everyone say go to Mexico or San Diego lmao.

    • @luiscuadras1963
      @luiscuadras1963 Год назад +8

      Usually people from Mexicali come over here a lot because they work, shop, commute or visit family on this side. A lot of them didn't really grow up with english so they grow up not knowing any, but the younger generation know enough to get by. That's because the kids either cross the border and come to the schools here or some of them went to private schools and took some classes there. It varies, but tbh, the more south of the town you go into, you'll find less people who can speak it, mostly because they are from mex and they are waiting for the buses downtown or they are field workers who just finished their jobs and hanging around getting food, the bus, getting a ride, or waiting for their freinds so they can cross back together. Historically both sides of the border have heavy agriculture industries or other forms of work and most people from mex come to work jobs because the wages are better and a lot of these people worked all their life so picking up english hasn't been a priority for many.

    • @jesszb76
      @jesszb76 8 месяцев назад

      Its because almost everyone here knows how to speak Spanish or atleast understands it so it isn't really much of a necessity for everyone to speak English as they can still get by just with Spanish. That is unless you are going to school here. If you go to school then it is more of a requirement to understand English as that is the language used for most of the schoolwork for all subjects with the exception of Spanish classes.

      @@4KTravelChannel I mean Calexico and Mexicali have always been interlaced as almost a same city, however Mexicali grew bigger and Calexico is sometimes seen as rather than another city, a nice and tidy shopping center for American goods that are sometimes cheaper than those exported to Mexico and Mexicali city, I'm from Mexicali, and since Imperial County is the county in the US with most Mexican % (IK it says hispanic origin and stuff in the census, but its 99% Mexicans that went to farm up north for better rates) Maybe that's why, it's a basically Mexican city with American infrastructure, therefore, second class citizenship in one's own country, due to cultural differences, similr things could happen where the American migrants that come to Mexico to be able to spend in Pesos while earning dollars, anglomerate in small communities, and being Mexican there could also garner the second class citizenship treatment he's describing here.
