    Another tip. Make sure everyone at home knows you're going to be gone for quite awhile. Nothing worse than being rushed while thrifting.

    My best find was at my local Salvation Army I found a small canteen shaped purse that I fell in love with; I bought it for $3.99 since it was half off day and when I got home I realized it was brand new so I googled the brand name “Etienne Aigner” and realized it’s a $230 purse I couldn’t believe it....sometimes the thrift stores don’t know what they have 😂

    The joy of thrift stores: IT'S THE HUNT!
    My best find was a 25 cent book at a library sale - it was a yearbook from the US Army's Cavalry School (at Ft. Riley, Kansas) from the year that then-Major George Patton attended the school. It included an essay by MAJ Patton. It made the very best present I ever gave to my brother - a US Army Armored Cavalry officer.

      Mikayla Skierski, I went to a local Hospital Auxiliary (Hazel Hawkins in Hollister) several years ago when they were fixing to move to a bigger place. The sign said, "All Womens' Clothing $1.00" so I took all 6 real leather coats & jackets to the register. The girl questioned it, manager was brought up, she said the sign said..., sell them to her for $1 !!!! I STILL wear them, one is a gorgeous calf-length duster, another is designer waist-coat, another a brown bomber, another biker-type; the rest I have to family!!!!

      I went once to a cute thrift store in a small town where i used to live. There was a fill (STUFF!!!) a paper grocery bag for $3 apiece special major sale. I found the two most awesome red and camel knee-length leather fitted coats. Both truly vintage i believe. They didn't mark them as not for sale in the brown grocery paper bag sale but hesitated greatly on allowing that major steal. I still feel that $20 each was an amazing find. Alas both are dead now. One, i got too heavy for and the sleeves ended up being too short anyway and no returns (red one and SUCH beautiful color. Blue-based vivid red...maybe cross between cherry, candy apple and strawberry reds. Or the color British Red Coat like the iconic L'Oreal lipstick shade or cherries in the snow lipstick by Revlon...but as usual i seriously digress.) I wore that camel coat every day in fall and winter and even early spring, until i wore it out from daily use. The loss and grief was overwhelming...just kidding.

    thrift used to be good for me, I have an extensive collection of vintage dresses, however, during the past year or year and a half I notice that they're pricing the items really high, local shops, goodwill, salvation, anywhere..... and tip #33, it's a lesson hard learned, when buying clothes don't take them straight home, even if you spend a little extra time and money, take them to the dry cleaners or the washateria, cloth moths can hide very very well even if you think it's clean, the getting rid of those suckers and the damage they can cause to your other items is not worth it

    • @laurie4275
      @laurie4275 6 лет назад +20

      Monalisa Menno I stopped shopping Goodwill, because their prices are higher now than several discount retailers. A manager once told me, they price items according to their "typical retail value". That's so wrong. And I even see a lot of Dollar Tree items in there, priced from $5 - $10. They KNOW they're ripping us off.

    • @blondwiththewind
      @blondwiththewind 5 лет назад +4

      Monalisa Menno ... OR you could take large plastic bags (trash bags etc.) and put the clothing in it and tie it closed....those moths can't get into your home that way, and you've got extra time to plan a trip to the laundromat in a day or two.

  • @9159bsbs
    @9159bsbs 6 лет назад +2

    Great tips! One thing I always do is hold the clothing to the light and check for moth holes!

    Different thrift stores, you'll find, have a different "flavor" if you go there often. I have three in my area I shop often, and I've learned A has great handmade quilts a lot, B has really good clothing my size, and C has furniture and art I like. All three stores sell all those things, but each one has it's own pool of donators, which influences what exactly they have to sell.

    • @keithparkhill8321
      @keithparkhill8321 8 лет назад +1

      +Marialla I would forego the furniture unless you are capable of cleaning it well. Bedbugs are to bad right now and a infestation will cost you more than you would save.

    many of my clothes and shoes that usually catch my friends' attention are the ones from the thrift shop. it's really a good feeling not mainly because i'm being complimented, but because digging through the items in the store and getting them for an affordable price are pure heaven. ♥

But it'll probably kill me, not only cause I can't drive, but because of all the great furniture and decor items I could spot in your vid alone and not being able to take them with me on the plane back home. My Dutch friends complain that their secondhand jeans are as expensive as higher-end brand jeans here in America! o.o *or* I could get a secondhand pair here for ~$10 and ship them for $10-15 by weight. heh.

    Some of my best thrift finds have been maxi skirts. The area I'm in has a pretty large religious community (many dress on the modest side) and we have theme parks near by (some look like costume/uniform wear) so I get to pick up lots and lots of long skirts for less than $4. Some other faves: a pair of Demonia heels for $5, a musical carousel with my birthstone, and a vintage (vinyl) copy of Deliver by The Mamas & The Papas.

      Yes, I understand completely when you encounter a designer luxury item at bargain prices....it is amazing.
      I attain a authentic beautiful Black Leather, Mens Coach Legacy tote bag for $80.00. Which retail for $700 or $800 in excellent condition. I gotten a timeless Mens full length Blk. Shearling coat for $15.00
      Which retail for any where from $1200 or $2000 depending on where you purchase new like Neiman Marcus or Barney's of New York.
      Many other wonderful fines over the years
      thrifting. I go frequently least one a month and donate some items back once done with items and get a receipt for my taxes for charitable donations.
      Helping the homeless and providing job training in the Goodwill corporation, Salvation Army, maybe other stores when you Thrift plus savings ect.
      Is why I thrift.

    Since my mom sews, I learned to turn the clothing inside out to make sure it's properly lined/not damaged. Also, some items are handmade but made extremely well and that's always a score! I live in the DC area so I hit the Value Villages and Goodwills (there are plenty between DC, MD, VA) and my favorite is the Salvation Army in Alexandria VA. It's where I've picked up all of my Oscar De La Renta, Guiseppe Zannotti and BCBG!

    These tips are awesome. However, I used to work at Goodwill. When it was summer we didn't push sweaters and long sleeves. And vise versa, when it was winter we didn't push as many summer clothes. Also, cashiers usually, at least in the case of my store, don't have any control over the price. But it is nice to be NICE- because they will definitely take care of your stuff better and be more helpful!

    One of my best thrift store finds was a Longaberger Purse basket with the liner and protector for 25 cents. It was in a huge box of baskets and I almost overlooked it. One of our favorite pieces of furniture is a big wooden chair that was left on the side of the road, so it was free. I currently work in a thrift store and you won’t believe all good stuff people donate ! Sometimes you open up a bag full of Lacoste shirts or Levis... the thing is that we gotta price more than 2000 items a day so that means that we don’t have time to check clothes correctly. So always check good before you buy !

    I love retro clothes and I find that Goodwill is a great place to find them! I also agree with the stinky items! It's more costly to try and remove odor from clothing, especially if it never comes off the clothes! So many of my jewelry came from thift stores, too!

      If the item is very inexpensive, I have taken the chance and machine-washed "Dry Clean Only" items. I have had some things fall apart, but more often than not, I have been successful. Nonetheless, I am more willing to take a chance on a stained garment than a smelly one.
      Also, if a blouse or dress is large enough, I will wash it and then re-cut and re-style it, removing the sweat-stained underarm and collar areas.

    You have great tips! And your personality is vivid and warm. I'm a thrifter and reseller in Big D. We have about a dozen great "honey holes" here but I highly recommend the local charity thrifts in your city, wherever that is. They tend to have lower prices because they want to move a lot of merch. AND you're helping a local cause like a women's shelter, hospital or other nonprofit. Happy thrifting! OH, my best find: Mary McFadden 1980 Fortuny pleat skirt, $1. Sold it for $125.

    Thanks for the great tips ! My favorite thrift store finds are all kinds of furniture that does not wobble . I spray it white and put on folk art paintig between the handles and several mismatched pieces are looking like a match. Great for Kids room and be creative with the paint. and ideas. How about a dresser in sky blue and straight stipes to top and paint daisies across top drawer. add lady bugs, etc. birds. etc. I did this for bedroom furniture for adults this way: I ainted over the brown with black enamel ( prie first ) I added brass oval handles and I put a stencil in between the handles in red. This looked like beautiful Chinese black, gold and red bedroom set ( the red was for the stencil - just a bit )

    OMG! I love thrifting! Kimberly from Tacoma, WA here. I love going yard sale hopping with the ladies in my family during summer weekends. Fun story; I've found brand new American Eagle jeans and Lululemon active wear in one Goodwill once! Best trip ever!!! Another good tip is going to the Goodwill or yard sales in wealthy and/or established neighborhoods! That's where the high quality stuff is! One time I went to a community yard sale in a retirement neighborhood, one man was hosting an estate sale for his sister who had passed on, and she was a world traveler! I picked up gorgeous art and antiques from Haiti, Iraq (pre-Saddam), and Italy. Like you said, gold is where you find it...

    These were such great tips! One thing I do when thrifting is to just look at colors and patterns as I go through the racks. If I love the material, then I look at the style, size, price, etc. That way, I find stuff in unexpected places and I can even consider altering something if I like it enough. Also, sidenote: you know that saying, "Wear your clothes, don't let your clothes wear you"? I feel like you're one of those people that it doesn't matter what you're wearing, you just rock it so confidently and comfortably! You are #goals. 😊

    Fantastic Tips! Best thrift store find for me was a Lane brand microfiber sectional with two reclining ends for $65. The underside was pristine, but it took my husband, and myself using oxyclean and my little green clean machine to get the fabric clean. Turned out like new. So another rule is Get it while the gettin' is good. Cost to us for that one was a bucket of Oxyclean and a truck rental for $25. So the whole thing including the sectional was about $100. Best score ever! Wish our Goodwill had the sale days like yours.

    Rule #32 Before going out and buying something new that you want/need spend a few weeks looking at thrift stores.
    Rule #33 Think ahead for gifts. If the item is in good condition no one will care that it came from a thrift store. Especially antiques.
    Rule #34 When looking for clothes go alone so you can take your time, when looking for furniture take someone with you.
    Rule #35 Drop off items at thrift stores you go to less so that you don't see your old items and feel regret.

It was a silk and cotton blend. What was really interesting was that it had a cutout on the cuff for a watch to show through. It had a yellow $6.99 tag ..... but that day yellow tags were a dollar. I bought it. When I got home I looked up the logo .... It stood for "Billionaire"! It turned out to be a $1,000 contour shirt!

    I love thrift shopping! Goodwill, I call Sachs Park Ave., because I used to go to one on Park Ave. in the Bronx, NY, LOL. While my co-workers spent $50 to $60 on a blouse, I would spend to $2.- I saved $80,000.- and put $40,000.- down payment on a house in Up State, New York. My rent in Riverdale, N.Y, was $1,300.- a month! Now my mortgage is less than that, and it's my land, and my own home. The reason I share this is only to inspire others to be thrifty, and see the benefits of thrift shops, and buying second hand. Thank you for your video!

    these are some awesome tips ! & yo I work at a thrift store and my tip is to make sure you pick up after yourself ! Y'all don't realize how much time we actually spend picking up clothes and shoes, like literally hours! please just remember to be considerate of the people who work in the store and if you drop something or pull it off the hanger, it only takes a few seconds to put back where you found it and would make us super happy & keep the store clean and tidy.

    1) Vinegar in the washing machine gets rid of "smells" sometime you need to do it several times - and it works well. 2) stains or discoloration in spots - oxiclean.. 3) And there is being thrifty and recycling that is great - do not hoard. 4) I normally take a bag of things to donate to keep things in the closet balanced.
