    I agree with everything you said here. The first half is so good, but it loses its way a bit with the mellower tunes. It’s great to have them around. Always killer live too.

    Given the influence of the 2 bands on electronic music, especially in the 90s, wearing an Orbital shirt for an Underworld album review. Five Stars!

    the first few singles (especially denver luna) had me believing this was going to be my instant album of the year, but yeah no, its just a good album. still like an 8/10 for me but the bar for them is so high that an 8 is bottom half discog material. i still like it and have played it a decent amount of times, it's just underworld is one of the only bands that can disappoint me by releasing an album that's only good lol

    Definitely think we're all mentally drained after yesterday's events but I'm glad you still managed to have enough energy to do this review.
    Personal thoughts: I also think Strawberry Hotel is just your causal Underworld experience but to a greater extent than their middle period albums. My fav songs were Techno Shinkansen and Sweet Lands Experience, Hilo Sky has also grown on me as well. Oh Thorn! was a standout to me, it sorta reminded me of their 80s work with Underneath the Radar with the synthpads, at least for the first minute or so. Gene Pool also was nice from a progressional point, sort of felt like their modern take of the likes of Banstyle/Sappy's Curry, though not as enjoyable from start to finish and more like as it goes on. Overall I don't see myself listening to the album that much in the close future, if anything I've actually been listening to A Hundred Days Off a lot more recently and am thinking of checking out the whole of Drift Series 1 or at least your personal favorite tracks.
    Thanks once again for pulling through with this review. Hope you feel better soon enough 🙏

    It's very impressive to me how they've been making music since the 80s and their quality hasn't dropped by any substantial margin. I thought the kettama collab was top tier and I really would love an entire album of that sound. I enjoy how you like drift so much even though it is my least favorite release from them. I much prefer the more cut down concise stuff like barbera. This new record will definitely sit near the bottom of the return listens until it grows on me but it's still very solid. At this point in their career I kind of wish they'd go more experimental than barbera rather than returning to form.

    • @sweetwheatsy
      @sweetwheatsy 27 дней назад

      Though, if you are aching for the experimental stuff, I'd imagine that you would love the DRIFT-series since they really go in so many interessting directions for that one. If you haven't checked them out yet, listen to their Riverrun projects from 2007. They are all very experimental and solid - the last one, I'm A Big Sister (...), is downright amazing.

    I really like the sound of this album and the diversity of said sound. Underworld are my favourite band and while this is a step down from Drift they are still in incredible form this late in their career. It's also nice to have a normal Underworld album that hits the one-hour mark - their first since A Hundred Days Off, twenty-two years ago (excluding Drift Series 1 of course).
    My favourite tracks are denver luna, Techno Shinkansen (wish it was at least seven minutes, but euphoric anyway), and the colour red, Sweet Lands Experience (that weird melody towards the end has been stuck in my head quite a bit for the last few weeks), Hilo Sky (a banger that's oddly relaxing at the same time), King of Haarlem, Ottavia, Gene Pool (my favourite overall, nine minutes of pure bliss), and Stick Man Test. Least favourite is Oh, Thorn!

    Oblivion With Bells is my favourite UW - not an opinion you hear often, but a moody, melodic work is usually gonna end near the top for me. Agree with you on Barking (ehhhhh) and Barbara (the joy of “it doesn’t sound like Barking!” was quickly replaced by a severe lack of enthusiasm), and I’m glad they’re back with a huge amount of confidence again.
    I actually found Strawberry Hotel to be like a mini-Drift - a selection of top-tier bangers that you’d imagine would be beyond two guys approaching 70, a bunch of odd experiments that mostly work, and even when they don’t are suitably interesting enough to warrant inclusion. Only one I don’t like is ‘Iron Bones’ which does nothing for me. I absolutely adore Ottavia, hate seeing so many people be down on it. Esme’s “oh, I’ve gone too far” is just wonderful, a kind of naturalistic performance I never hear in music.
    And well done on finding the strength to create positive content with everything going on. It can’t have been easy.

    I liked this album somewhat but it definitely wasn't on par w/drift, honestly felt something of the opposite with the more downtempo stuff being nicer to me (although Denver Luna rules too, in fact that's probably the best one here), I didn't like ottavia or iron bones at first but I started to enjoy them as they went on. The earlier stuff felt more monotonous but maybe I should hear it again idk. decent review, hope you're doing well and I hope the future isn't terrible. We always have you and your reviews at least, they're always fun...

    Denver luna and g town euphoria definitely set my expectations a bit too high but this is still a really good album, and honestly its probably my 3rd favourite after second toughest and dubnobass, but if it had continued the energy and momentum of the first half into the second then it couldve easily been their best. I feel like the people saying this album is "one of their worst" or "the worst theyve ever done" just need to let it grow on them or listen to their older albums because it really isnt far off

    I quite enjoyed this review! Currently reviewing Underworld’s material on my ‘Thoughts & Opinions’ channel, and am about to start diving into their 90s work, but that’s irrelevant.
    Focusing on this album, the only songs I’ve listened to so far on here were the album’s singles: ‘and the colour red’, ‘denver luna’, ‘Black Poppies’ and ‘Techno Shinkansen’. ‘denver luna’ is my personal favourite, as it sounds as if they’re trying to recapture some of their sounds from the 90s, which I really like! As for the other songs, I’ve only listened to the snippets of them on Spotify, and most of them sounded quite good, but some of them not as great as I expected.
    Other than that, I think the majority of this album sounds pretty nice!

  • @woofmute

    i think you're completely fair on it here. they did the reprisals seemingly to tie together an album of 16 songs, but they had outtakes like what became the jp bonus track Velvet Does. i really feel like it might have been stronger to make use of that instead of going back to an isolated vocal/vocoder track from denver luna or shared patterns from other songs. or to even trim some, and work on making the existing songs longer or more fleshed out. Techno Shinkansen for example was actually cut down in length slightly from its earlier form.
    do recommend Velvet Does if you have a way to listen to it. think it would work within the album rather as an extra track closer for the jp release.

    What puts me off this album is the length of the tracks. Underworld are better listening when their tracks are long form. Short track form Underworld is less appealing. Dunno why. Just is.
    Mirror System's release Route 77 is worth checking out.

    This felt like quite the letdown ngl. And especially after "Drift". (Another Silent Way bangs more than most of the tracks in Strawberry Hotel combined.)
    In fact it felt like a bigger letdown than "For That Beautiful Feeling" after "No Geography". "Denver luna" and "and the colour red" hyped this album. Hard. It seemed like we were going back to the 90s with this one ("Denver luna" is the 2nd "Born Slippy" to me no sh*t!), but most of the tracks feel kinda lacking. There are heavy hitters like "Lewis in Panoma" and "Hilo Sky" tho.
    It's a good album, but I hoped for more than that!

      I didn't mean it that way. I'm hard relying on music content like yours because what happened stresses me out a lot and music is a big coping mechanism of mine. I know I have to, but I don't really want to think about it.

    So only Lefties and Democrats can enjoy electronic music? ok. Unless I missed something, I don't recall political implications on Wonky's past reviews (possibly some of the Prodigy stuff). I don't think bass hits and hi-hats and 303s and warbly synths have a political slant. Anyways, look at it this way. Many artists/creators/musicians need something to fight for/against, protest. Some of the best art is made this way. IMO some of the best art was created during conservative government rule (80s, 90s), so this might work in that favor. They tend to be a little uninspired/lazy/aimless if everything is the way they want. Thats a way to view this. I understand about being progressive, punk, anti-establishment. But the meaning especially of those last 2 words has changed in the last decade. If this were a channel about bands like U2, Springsteen, rock music or even some rap, maybe I'd get it or feel its more appropriate. I don't seek to ignite debate here, just wishing I could get some good escapism apart from either "wow Trump won lets celebrate" or "omg the world is over doom doom! Trump won!". I don't want either encroaching on my music, especially EDM which favors instrumentals, predominantly.

    • @TheWonkyAngle
      @TheWonkyAngle  2 месяца назад +15

      I don't recall ever saying in this video or anywhere else that only leftists and democrats can enjoy electronic music, but if THAT was your takeaway from me coming off somewhat depressed in this video's opening 20 seconds then that says a heck of a lot more about you than it does about me
      all art is political, including art made specifically as an escape from what's going on in the real world, and my content has never shied away from politics if I feel it's necessary to bring the subject up in order to analyze any given piece of art, instrumental or otherwise, even instrumental albums can have implicit or intentional political meaning. additionally I think the idea that great art only comes out of places of hardship is a massively short-sighted thing to say, I think people typically have an easier time making art when they don't have other hardships to deal with in their life (especially when it comes to EDM which is kind of an entire scene and genre about partying and life being good made almost entirely by people who live in privileged living circumstances), and the idea that we should be actively making the world a worse place to live for everyone in order to get better art is even more insulting. a Kamala presidency would not have fundamentally changed the world so much for the better as to not give people plenty of things to protest (if your argument is about conservative people in power, she's about as conservative as the conservative leaders from the 80s and 90s were; the overton window has moved so far to the right that Reagan and Thatcher would look like socialists nowadays), and a trump presidency is only going to result in millions more people in marginalized groups dying that could've also been making art. depending on how extreme his policies get and say for instance he wants to round up anyone who belongs to the LGBT+ or neurodivergent community, something could end up happening to me personally where you don't get to see my videos anymore. that chance is admittedly very small, I think I'm going to be fine, but just going off of what trump himself has openly campaigned on that chance is technically not zero either, and even if I don't end up personally affected by this election result I wouldn't be surprised if other people I know personally would be
      if you want to continue being willfully ignorant, I as some random dude on the internet don't have any power to stop you, you believe whatever you want to believe. but this channel has never been designed to coddle people from what's going on in the real world either, this affects everyone

    • @nicksmith4340
      @nicksmith4340 2 месяца назад

      @TheWonkyAngle I'm sorry but "millions dying"?? Where does that view come from? What from 2016-20 gives you that idea? I'm no trump supporter and occupy a position where i see plusses and minuses from both sides. There is a trend of quite extreme over reaction going on currently. Sometimes it's the Democrats, sometimes it's the repuplicans. It's always democracy. What exactly is making you feel so alarmist in your outlook? It really isn't the third reich. I enjoy your content but I'm tired of this complete over reaction from the left. It's not fascism, it's just the outcome to a democratic process, which will swing back again.

    • @TheWonkyAngle
      @TheWonkyAngle  2 месяца назад +3

      @nicksmith4340 idk if this is bait but on the chance you're being honest, this reaction has less to do with what happened in trump's first term (aside from the millions dead from covid, disaster aid getting blocked from puerto rico just because trump felt like it, and the insurrection and stuff) and a lot more to do with what republicans have been doing during Biden's term.
      worth looking up Project 2025, the plan for action that republicans and trump insiders have openly been promoting and signing off on, and how transgender people are planned to be treated in the coming four years, there's lots of videos out there going through lots of specific details if you don't feel like reading through it yourself, it's a very real thing. according to that plan, a logical pipeline will form for trans people to lose all their human rights, if not just also classified as p@doph!les (which republicans commonly refer to trans people as) and giving who they view to be p@doph!les the death sentence. aside from that, trump has publicly promised to supercharge the palestinian g@noc!de going on right now, which I realize the democrats probably wouldn't have done anything to stop that either but trump has promised a lot more support specifically to wipe out all human lives in palestine so that contributes to the "millions dying" too. not even to get into all the ways that human rights are going to be stripped from people without directly killing them like the all-but-guaranteed nationwide abortion & birth control ban coming soon that'll put countless women's lives in danger or how he's campaigned on mass deportation of immigrants, we're technically not even guaranteed to have any more elections or democracy going forward since trump has directly said in campaigns that if he wins then he'll make sure nobody will have to vote again, in his own (paraphrased) words. idk if that last point actually matters to you, for the sake of your argument that technically isn't a requirement to survive and I've seen distressing amount of anti-democracy takes going around recently but that's a thing too
      and it could very well affect me personally and/or this channel as well, depending on what rules are put in place surrounding media and discussion of LGBT+ topics, I as a content creator who has covered transgender artists in the past could have my content targeted and/or taken down, or if you want to go even further, depending on how broadly the definition of p@doph!le is applied under his tenure (something republicans have intentionally left vague), he could so choose to expand it to all LGBT+ people, then I as a publicly out ace/aro guy could have my own life put in danger. again, as I mentioned in my previous comment this plan affecting me that personally is only a slim outside chance and I think I'm going to be fine, but again, the chances of all of this happening are neither zero nor negligible enough to ignore. everything I've said is based on what republicans themselves have said and not just what the LeFtIst MeDiA tells me
      it is true none of this has been enacted yet and there's technically not a 100% guarantee this could happen, despite, you know, everything trump and other republicans have been campaigning on pointing towards it happening anyway, I would love for you to be right and for literally everything trump or other republicans have said in the past four years to not matter, and hey, if you're one of those people that only cares about what materially affects your own personal life then feel free to continue plugging your ears, if you're a financially well-off straight cis white dude who likes trump without wanting to say it out loud you'll probably be fine too, idgaf. but imo the potential for literal millions to die under a trump presidency that wouldn't have been in danger of dying under a kamala presidency is not an overreaction, the possibility is all very real and it's a heck of a lot bigger than what goes on in your life
