  • 2024 has admittedly been a slower year for electronic music, but that certainly doesn't mean we didn't get plenty of diamonds in the rough, and it's finally that time of year to go back and highlight my favorites of them.

happy new year from Manila! big thanks for getting me into Orbital, as most of my 2024 was made up of Middle of Nowhere spins that I got achievements from YT Music for one of the top Orbital listeners in a given month haha! btw, I was also thrilled to catch Jamie xx live for the first time as he had us as one of his stops for his Asia tour this November, it was bananas

I’m still sticking with my #1 as Cascade. Just a tech masterpiece in my opinion. As for other highlights of the year, I liked In Waves, Dostrotime, SMILE :D (yes actually), and some other underground picks that I’d personally recommend like Vril - Saturn is a Supercomputer and Marble Elephant - Truth. There of course have been better years in electronic music, but I’m privileged to have grown a ton of my music taste this year, partly thanks to your channel! Cheers for a great 2025!

Great video. Some stuff I was shocked to see (new Squarepusher and Moby, wow), and some stuff I had never heard before. My electronic AOTY was Total Blue - Total Blue. It's incredibly warm. Check out the track 'Chaparral' - it's just got such a killer yet simple guitar riff.

Enjoyed the vid! I haven't gotten a lot of new electronic stuff this year but made a couple of Bandcamp purchases in 2024 that I recommend: Ruby My Dear: Smooth Working EP, JakoJako: Segmente EP. Ruby My Dear is very underrated in my opinion! Definitely check out his stuff if you haven't.

My favorite/most listened to album this year was SOPHIE’s self titled album. I know it’s controversial and some people think it’s half baked, but I think it has some of her best ideas. If she was still around I’m sure she would approve of it. It touched me on such a deep level and inspired me to keep going and see the beauty in the world. Loving the Blueshades and Vale-smith as well

Great list here! I agree with a lot of your picks. I absolutely love Cascade as well. Despite its simplicity, I also have to attest to this one being the best album Floating Points has ever put out. This album’s mostly banger after banger and I love it!!!
Shoutouts to LP Giobbi’s Dotr and Moby’s Always Centered At Night as well. I think they’re both great albums too (the latter being one of my favorites from Moby to date which is saying a lot)!

  • @avaritiahs1237
    @avaritiahs1237 12 дней назад +2

Great list as always! Love the Floating Points and Jamie xx records as well, and I’d probably rate the former just a smidge higher than the latter. Cascade is such a consistent all-rounder back to back bop of an album, the next effort from him is definitely going to have all my attention down the road.
(And I need to listen more to Throwing Snow, it has some very high highs and it’s very cool, thanks for putting me up to it!)
Probably the only electronic releases I’d rate above them are Nala Sinephro’s Endlessness and my AOTY, Iglooghost’s Tidal Memory Exo. Igloo really hit a home run for me in being so addictive yet exhilarating for every listen.
Honestly felt like a pretty good if not great year for electronic music IMO 😊 looking forward to what 2025 has to offer!

I thought electronic music was decent this year (although my fav album of the year full stop was more indie than electronic being Vampire Weekend’s newest album)
My favs this year were the new Moby album (as a big fan of his, this was great, and his live show this year was awesome), Jamie xx’s new album, Four Tet’s Three and lots of tracks from Hyperdrama by Justice. Special mentions also for Nala Sinephro, Lance Gurisik’s really solid album, u-Ziq, Skee Mask and Floating Points.

  • @continuum_mid

    My top 5:
    1. Floating Points - Cascade
    2. SiIvaGunner Fusion Records - BOMBERTRACKS
    3. Patricia Taxxon - Bicycle
    4. Struction - Basis
    5. Sungazer - Against the Fall of Night
I agree on this being an off-year for electronic music. I didn't have an album I could comfortably call a favorite of the year until Cascade came out, and the rest of my list is some distance below it. I may change my mind after listening to some of your picks next year though, I missed some of these and they all sound great.

Can't really make a list like that rn so here's just a list of highlights I've heard this year which coincidentally happened on the same year:
Penguking - Aquatic Jungle, Intellectual Pyramid, Ultra Vibrant Mirror Ball
Osamu Sato - Compu Movie (was found this year, originally released in 1994)
Aphex Twin's expansion of SAW2 which just put on streaming two tracks and added one more but whatever that'll do
Uhhhhh idk expansion of Orbital's Green Album and a pair of Osamu Sato's smaller releases being found will do for HM I guess

Here are my top 15 albums/EPs of the year:
    15. Jaron - LIGHTYEARS | Kind of a backloaded mixed bag but I had to throw it on here because it contains many of his best releases in his 2023-24 era (especially ONCE, SPINNING, and ORANGES). This album also JUST came out, so it's placement here is a little bit tenuous. Would probably be higher if those 2023-24 releases came out just before this album did rather than several months before.
    14. Vale-Smith - If You See A Blur... | While I felt like Um Yo was bloated, this album feels both a lot more concentrated and diverse, which I appreciate even if a lot of the tracks here didn't hit as hard as his previous albums.
    13. Charli XCX - BRAT | Just a really solid pop album.
    12. Patricia Taxxon - Bicycle | Unironically one of the best house (or house-adjacent) albums to come out this year, the atmosphere created with this album is unparalleled by any other that I've heard.
    11. Paark - Stonelands | This album probably would've been higher if many of it's best tracks (like As If You Understand What's Going On, Stonelands, or Nightpainting) hadn't been released months or years before it came out (Stonelands came out all the way back in October 2020!). Still a very good "wintery" album.
    10. N33T - All the things I couldn't change | 2024 really was the year of albums that took way too damn long to come out. The first singles of this delightful synthpop album came out in 2022, and then nothing was heard until September of this year when "NOTHING" dropped, and then 3 months later the album finally came out. Despite being in an almost similar boat to Stonelands, this album benefits mainly by not dropping all of it's best tracks years before it's release (it also helps that I didn't discover the first 2 singles, which released near the end of 2022, until early this year). This album manages to feel like it's its own thing while clearly taking a lot of notes from artists like Madeon (and Porter Robinson, to a lesser extent), being both uplifting and a little heart-breaking at times. This album basically serves as a direct upgrade to that Porter Robinson's SMILE :D for me.
    9. Syzy - The weight of the world | Just a really solid dubstep album with a lot of bangers. The unspoken hero of this album is its structuring - it's frontloaded with a lot of the harder-hitting riddim/brostep tunes before getting to a lot of the more melody-focused tracks in its second half, though nearly every song on the album clearly has a little more thought put into it other than just being a club banger. Feels like a "best of both worlds" combination of early 2010s brostep and modern, clean production.
    8. Xavi - Spitfire EP | I wouldn't normally put EPs on my year-end list, and certainly not in the top 10, but this one just doesn't have any misses. Might've been a genuine #1 pick if it had the same consistent quality with the length of an album. Consists of a lot of future bass & synthpop-adjacent tracks. Special shoutout to Shared Hue, might be my favorite song of the year.
    7. Patricia Taxxon - Ten Skies | Scratches the eternal itch I have for atmospheric drone music with some actual thought behind it.
    6. Hudson Lee - Light Dancer | Doesn't quite live up to Headspaces but comes surprisingly close. While the album meanders a bit it still captures something that I haven't really heard captured in electronic music, hell, music in general, before. I think this project is going to age well with me.
(This top 5 is honestly super interchangeable for me, and I had a really hard time deciding what's going where.)
    5. Nigel Good - A Little Something | This is one of those albums that holds a lot of personal value for me. Nigel Good's 2015 album "Space Cadet" was very formative for me back when it came out, it was the project that served as a proper introduction to actual progressive house music (this was back when virtually every commercial house song was labelled "progressive house" on EDM RUclips for some reason). This project, and that one, probably won't blow anyone's minds, but hearing Nigel Good make a surprise return 7 years after disappearing off the face of the Earth with an album nearly equal in quality to Space Cadet is certainly something I wasn't expecting, and something I'll never forget, even if this really ends up being his last project.
    4. Glacier - here (not rly) there | Similar in vibe to Light Dancer, especially with its themes of nature, introspection, and self-actualization, but less experimental and more dance/pop-adjacent, although I'd say both albums are about equal when it comes to how incredible the sound design and production is. "pining" is probably the biggest earworm of 2024 imo.
    3. acloudyskye - There Must Be Something Here | One of the most emotionally fulfilling releases of the year. While I was worried acloudyskye's new direction into a more rock-influenced (but generally just softer electronic) style (when compared to his previous albums) would result in his music hitting less with me, and I was delighted to be proven wrong with this album.
    2. Skee Mask - Resort | The biggest grower of the year for me. Atmospheric IDM is my favorite kind of IDM, and scratches a really particular itch with me which is probably why I'm still a fan of Lusine and listened to his album last year at least 200 times despite it being like a 7/10 at best. I just really like the distant/lost vibe of this album, and the album also provides some of the most tonal and stylistic diversity I've heard out of Skee Mask (though I haven't listened to Shred yet), without the album just feeling like a compilation, which is a plus.
    1. Thorjn - Full Body Sprain | Ultimately decided to give it to this album for easily having the most replay value compared to any other I've listed here. Every time I listen to this album I feel like I get a slightly different and slightly better experience, which is something I can't even say for similar albums like Alexander Panos' Nascent.

it's a good album, but the sheer amount of people hyping it up as something that had never been done before or even inventing a whole new genre despite mostly just being a regular dance-pop record legit weirded me out

  • @a_silly_birb

I think this year for me, musically, may have been a little bit better than last year. My electronic music feed has kinda been slow for me this year as it was last year, mainly for the same reason of trying to catch up in every genre I can lol.
I don’t know if anyone reading this would consider Brat to be electronic, but that was an absolute favorite for me this year. I think it’s Charli’s best work to date lyrically, and I’m a sucker for the EDM flavors riddled in that album.
But if you don’t count that, then my favorite was In Waves. I think Jamie xx proved that In Colour was no fluke and that he cemented himself as (hands down) the best new name in UK Garage. I seem to be the only one in any of my electronic circles online who wasn’t too big on the new Floating Points, which is so unfortunate lol
My close second to that would be dds’s You Like Music… this is the first time I’ve effectively been pulled into one of their albums. I feel like it was the closest they’ve been to OPN this far, with their brighter tones and IDMish production that makes it feel more out there than their previous releases (imo).
It’s also nice to see that this year was better for you than last year. I have had a good personal year myself, which is always a nice thing to say after the past half-a-decade was comically bad all things considered. My usage if AOTY has gone up even more since using it more last year, and while I’ve been less social than any year prior, I’ve been loving it there more and more. ik you’ve said you thought about joining, and I personally think it’d be cool to see you over there XD
the world this year was fucked, but still, hell yeah to this year. here’s to an awesome 2025! 🎉

Definitely weaker than 2023, but still some pretty cool stuff. My top 10 would probably be:

    9. Syncreticism - Mattia Cuppeli
    8. Worm - Ozoyo
    7. Birth of The Synthezaur - Synthezaur
    6. Tidal Memory Expo - Iglooghost

    For me:
    1. Hyperdrama - Justice
    2. Cascade - Floating points
    3. In Waves - Jamie XX
By the way, I released 3 electronic albums this year on Bandlab, under the name MAXAVIVE. They are 'Realm of the Spectres' 'The Cosmic Collapse' and 'Wonders of the Cavern'. They are electronic concept albums which span a variety of influences from artists both within electronic and non-electronic music genres, such as The Prodigy, The Avalanches, Justice, Mr Oizo, The Chemical Brothers, Skrillex and Death Grips. Please let me know what you think of them, if you would like to give them a listen :)

My list looks VERY different 😱 album of the year was A>M Diversion Ends followed by CENSOR - SWARM. There was amazing EPs released by Majestolux, Emmon and Nervous Damage/Majestolux. All Swedish artists and the only non Swedish album was from the extended family The Cure - Songs from the lost world.

I recommend you to listen to norwegian electronic act Lakeshouse and their «Folkemusikk» Think you will enjoy it.

for electronic music? gotta go with 2020, there was so much great stuff that year that really lasted with me longer-term. the pick I had at #10 that year is in roughly the same tier of enjoyment as my top 3 from this year

Will probably say that from every album mentionned :
Floating Points and Jamie XX are honorable mentions for me (could be on my list ? We'll see if i put them on regularly in 2025)
Moby, Squarepusher, Suzi Analogue and Lance Gurisik would be on "random track honorable mention" thing.
And most of the rest are on the 7 range but didn't think it's worthy to be on the list.

well, I have reviewed Lone's Always Inside Your Head ruclips.net/video/wRvZT8E4Fp8/видео.html which contains very brief thoughts on his back catalog, and I've done reviews on both Casino Versus Japan's Hitori + Kaiso ruclips.net/video/4HzvqWNjIBQ/видео.html as well as his most recent album Tagebuch Einer Verlorenen where I briefly go over thoughts on that guy's back catalog as well ruclips.net/video/SfytSv-N6lA/видео.html

    • @LX3205-y3k
      @LX3205-y3k 10 дней назад

@@TheWonkyAngle You should still do a review of VOID FILL PRODUCT or Go Hawaii tho. I honestly feel that AIYH is not the best album to be making a first review of Lone, for that i would choose either Lemurian, Galaxy Garden or Reality Testing (Preferably Galaxy Garden as I would say it's one of Lone's best and most expansive works to date).

    • @TheWonkyAngle
      @TheWonkyAngle  10 дней назад

well my point is that those videos I have linked already have thoughts on the artists' fuller back catalogs (aside from the Hitori + Kaiso review, I made that video before I heard any other CVJ albums in full) so you'll get very brief takes on the projects you actually wanted my thoughts on
tl;dw, Reality Testing is in fact my favorite Lone record (and Galaxy Garden my second favorite), and Go Hawaii... tbh, really not one of CVJ's better works imo, I feel like he improved upon those ideas with later projects (such as Hitori + Kaiso, incidentally). haven't heard Void Fill Product
