Zoey is a keeper. Sam you listening. Reminds me of why at 64 I am still with my wife. We are about the adventure, not the destination, plans change all the time. Let's just enjoy the journey. As I watched Zoey rate the food, I fell in love with my wife again. I remember opening a 30 dollar bo/le of wine and a can of dinty Moore Chile. We laugh all the time about memories like that. Thanks Sam and Zoey.

Hi Sam. I’ve been watching, learning and enjoying your adventures for a while. Sorry this trip didn’t go completely as planned, but I’m really shocked that you have abandoned your belongings and boat on a remote beach. Please tell me that you made some arrangements to get it cleared!? It appears you hadn’t when posting this. As someone who is lucky enough to live beside a beach myself I become incensed at inconsiderate visitors who leave stuff they can’t be bother to take away for others to clear up. Raise your game. This is not ok.

The few videos that I have seen by Sam, have been pretty much like a Navy Seals special ops training film.
Sailing too and around the Bahamas with one rudder is like going cross country skiing in the Alaskan wilderness with only one ski.

I like Sam and think he is generally a nice person but this trip was completely unacceptable. He is lucky he did not kill the two of them at worst and need the coast guard at best. Taking a 16 foot Hobbie in poor condition and overloaded was not cool. They only made it because of luck not skill. I hope Sam learned a valuable lesson. Then he leaves all his crap on the beach and leaves. What’s up with that?
28:48 - don't be sad, girl...you're still in the Spring Time of your life's adventures. my wife often cries when we head home from our trips, so I get it & make sure that there's another adventure around the corner (though, she's a much better & frequent planner than I)

What is great about this video, is that someone else did what you always wanted to do, but now you can watch and see what happens. Thank you for the video. (there are sailing groups that do this trip, going as a group, saves you a lot of stress & mistakes.....ah, but not the life on edge, as this video)

Pretty amazing. I have made that trip many times but not in a Hobbie 16! Wow, and you averaged nearly seven knots!! I wouldn’t go off shore without a way to pump the hulls out while at sea.

All that stuff will be stolen within a week. You don't know anything about the Bahamas and it's large illegal Haitian population. Sam did the right thing. Make the stuff look like it's in use by tourists and it's guaranteed to be stolen.

I was wondering because I'd imagine had the locals found it they might have claimed it there because it would have appeared to them as if it had been abandoned, as it kind of was. Hope you're enjoying it just be careful on it as I'm sure you know there's not a lot of room for error if you miss your target destination on that small platform...

@@AB-kg6rk 🤡 BS! …. just like the people who bought disposable bbqs and cans to my local breach last night “had no choice” but to leave them behind. Im sure the BBQ was too hot too carry, and maybe they couldn’t find all of their empty cans and plastic bags in the dark. Maybe they thought that someone else could use it. I cleared it up this morning. It was their stuff and was their problem to remove. It’s self entitled anti social behaviour. Abandoning his boat boat and plastic tubs full of low value sh*t was not OK. Yes someone probably took away some of it. The rest probably gets washed out to sea. It was Sam’s responsibility to remove it all. It was a D move.

I have to wonder what the locals think about having a Hobie Kat just left on the beach? I enjoy your adventures but that one thought kept bugging me at the end of this one. Yes it is a semi functional boat with some gear left behind I just couldn't shake that thought...

I agree. Cruisers should leave no trace behind. This is just another piece of plastic basically thrown into the ocean. I would like Sam to post about a resolution for this boat. Lost a lot of respect for him on this one!
@@ts4366 The whole trip was irresponsible. They are relying on the fact that the US coast guard will come and save them in a moments notice. The boat could have easily capsized.

I too was confused about the seemingly sudden abandonment of the boat and gear. I went back and listened to him and he says they are leaving it for “a few days.” He mentions the possibility of an acquaintance or someone else taking it. After watching all of Sam’s videos He doesn’t seem the type to just walk away from it forever. I would expect him to explain it in a later video.

It was a dangerous ocean crossing that they shouldn't have done to begin with. It's a good they didn't sail back, especially with a broken rudder and a leaky hull but abandoning the boat with all that stuff on the beach like that is not a responsible thing to do either. Doesn't make me think very highly of him for doing that.

Pretty uncool to just leave everything on the beach and hope someone else cleans up your broken boat and mess. It is your trash and your responsibility.
Everyone's raving about Zoe, but she's just as bad as him if they both agreed to dump their shit and leave. "It's not my problem" is a bit of a childish attitude. They are both irresponsible kids after that.
Those no see them bugs are the worst! I used to work offshore in the Gulf of Mexico and those bugs would tear me up while I waited for a helicopter to pick me up at different ports along the coast. Great video, thanks!

I’ve been watching your channel for some time now, we received our glider ratings both at Seminal Lakes Glider Port, I’m disappointed that you left/ abandoned the Hobie on a beach in another country, basically you abandoned your trash on someone else’s Island, beach, country, my brother and his friends left their trash behind out in the California desert where we were riding motorcycles back in the 70’s, I gathered their trash up and hauled it home in a few trash bags over 100 miles, I got out of my truck and proceeded to dump it into his truck telling my dad he forgot his trash all over the desert. If I had the means and could go collect your Hobie Cat I would deliver it to your place up in Orient NC or Pickled Herring 2 in Sweden, you should be ashamed of yourselves for what you’ve done.

If I wasn’t going to work for the summer this weekend I would have loved to try to bring the hobie back. Give us an update if someone does. Also that was cool of them to donate meals but thanks for the honest review! I can think of other channels that don’t have that integrity.

Ever notice a humming noise coming from the rudders? The Hobiecat rudder trailing edge should be shaped to a knife edge or the vibration will eventually break the (factory made) rudders every time.

Cool video, I camp outside on the beach about 150 yards from the water and did not have problems with no-see ums. People that camp close to the ocean had problems with them. Saint John, US Virgin Is.

I sailed that Hobie in the outer banks, and the thought of taking it 90 miles out to sea... I'm just blown away. 🤯 You are an absolute Chad. To all the Karens complaining that you ditched it, they don't understand, they never will, don't sweat them. I enjoyed watching you sail to and around Ireland🇮🇪 and Scotland🏴, but after this🇧🇸, I'm a fan for life. You have proven you are the real deal, you epitomize the faustian ideal. One life, no fear!

I don’t know whether Sam ever reads or responds to comments. I hope he does and reads the neg comments regarding his fly tipping. I’m now wondering what he does with his plastic waste whilst sailing off shore? and what is usual practice amongst sailors? I’ve been a Sam fan, admire his abilities and have watched a good percentage of his content whilst not being able to sail myself. But this has given me cause to question his behaviour: I don’t recall ever seeing him deal with or discuss rubbish whilst off-shore or in marinas. I appreciate sewage, grey water, biodegradables, glass and empty cans all go over board - when off shore in deep waters. But Sam, what do you do with your plastics? Or general rubbish when you are in-shore? What do other sailors do?
I’ve only ever done one long sail (Med, Red Sea, Indian Ocean) 25 years ago and rubbish was a significant problem. Most went over board !- they were less enlightened times!!
Erik - No bullshit just sailing guy. Says he unwraps his plastic at the shore. And leaves it in the bin. Before setting off. The Sailing Frenchman keeps his in a secret compartment of his racing boat. I have also lost respect for the act of fly tipping and walking away and not being responsible.
In an earlier video sam unpacks a bunch of his packaged food and explains that the plastic takes up needless space and "he can't throw it out while at sea" I have seen him throw biodegradable stuff like a banana peel overboard but no plastic. I was hurt and suprised by this trashing of a beach, but I suspect they were overwhelmed. I too hope they found someone to take it all. He even left his nice puffer jacket he's worn in lots of other videos. Seemed like a very desparate move. I wonder if they didn't have the funds to both get off the island and dispose of the boat. They say the cruise was cheapest and we know he's living off of youtube which isn't exactly a windfall for everyone. He probs has a smaller footprint than most of us still.

Noseeums were genetically engineered in a lab at the University of Florida. The early explorers had a great time!
that is poor seamanship going out in a boat that is not fit for purpose, I would have thought fixing the leaks and rudder would have been the first thing you did when you came ashore.

Great stuff, keep it coming! I sail a little Nacra Cat 14 here in Phuket', but I think its a bit faster than the Hobie, as it still scares me when it really gets going and buries that leeward hu at 20+ knots!
