- Sheku Kanneh-Mason was winner of BBC Young Musician 2016. He played this piece in the String Final with his sister Isata Kanneh-Mason.
I've seen people play this on cello and no one, NO ONE moves across the cello the way he does. His, movements, his grace and love in playing this song is like no other who has played it! Rachmaninov, IS SMILING!
I agree absolutely. Rachmaninov would be very impressed listening to this.
Listen to his double stops. This killed me softly... So very beautifully played, so immersively moving, so profoundly, impossibly beautiful... He is an amazing cellist!
Ivan Tadeu what is a double stop? Please
@@targaryangirlalways5634 Playing two strings at once
@@Sayeedur123 Thank you!!
I keep returning to listen to this, Sheku and his sister Isata bring almost unbearable beauty and depth to Rachmaninoff's wondrous music, makes the world a better place, thank you!
Me too. Often in the middle of the night! I've completely lost count ...
...” unbearable beauty “... you hit it. Sublime.
OMFG i am in tears..this is so beautiful i cannot even begin to explain in words.
This was 6 years ago?
He really does encapsulate the melding of mind, body and instrument. Captivating to say the least.

I am beyond captivated by this family of artists. My Mom, rest in peace, loved Sheku's music so we played his RUclips video "Hallelujah arranged by Tom Hodge" at her memorial service. It was beautiful and deeply moving. I'm sure it meant the world to her from beyond. Thank you for sharing your gift. 🙏🏾❤️
I must thank megan markle for helping me discover this gem of a musician
Quick-Sword Ilena I agree
Me, too! Looks like? I MUST GO TO THE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA!
I'm in agreement with you. I came out with a new interest in this music that I never had before.
@PurelyAfrican cool, he plays so beautifully😎👍
Yes, I thank Meghan Markle too for introducing me to this exceptionally gifted family; truly they are exceptionally gifted. I remember their mother saying in an interview that they’re not prodigies, but that their exceptional abilities are a result of very hard work and diligent routine practise. Perhaps they really are all prodigies that perfect their art by their focused practise, attention to musical detail, and regular practise.
I’ve practised music all my 50 odd years of life, and practised hard but could never achieve the musical agility that even the youngest has. Therefore, I do believe that they are also gifted with the musical prodigy that we can only dream of. If they are producing work to this standard at such a young age, can one imagine what they will produce in ten years time?
Played with sensitivity, intensity, and beauty.
brought tears to my eyes. i am the same age as him and i am just in awe at his talent. his emotions while he plays is stunning, you can truly see the passion as he plays. what a handsome guy, and an inspiration for musicians as well

that is amazing news! i wish great success and all the greatness he deserves
You crushing?? ;) XD
This tore me apart. Agonisingly exquisite.
I am with you. a year later, I'm over here sniveling and crying.
Hauntingly beautiful music. Caressing the soul...
In these days of negative news it is so soothing and uplifting to listen to this, like the balm of Gilead. I am totally mesmerised by the entire Kanneh-Mason family and expect to hear more from each sibling. Kudos to the parents!
Wow! No words can describe the feeling you get from listening to this young and so talented young man. He is more tahn a great musician. He IS music... So moving to hear and watch him make one with his cello...
I can't help the tears when I listen to this. So full of emotion.
the first time to hear this transcription for cello and piano of this this melancholic piece, which became more tragic by this kind of instrumentation let alone the interpretation. Bravissimo indeed
A beautiful young man playing beautiful old music. Life is good !
Sheku’s intonation is absolutely perfect.
I've listened to this piece at least 50 times now. My GOD! Isata is magnificent, too. She is the daughter I wish I had.
Knew he was the winner the moment he started playing this
Many years ago I saw Menuhin and Tortelier play the Brahms Double, couldn't take my eyes off Tortelier, the instrument was so much part of him that you couldn't tell where Tortelier ended and the cello began, Sheku is so like the great Paul Tortelier, wonderful to see a great artist at the beginning of his careeer
This young man is an absolute gift to classical music lovers. He has a wonderful freedom of style in his playing which is exceptional at the least. He will rank amongst the greatest of all past and present cello performers.
What a thrill as parents to see these children develop their gifts! 😻
4/5/2017. This is the day I found this family and this performance I've watched three times!
Double stops ripped my heart 💓.Glorious!!!!!
Ive never seen anyone play so good and like this. Is as though he is making love to the cello. This young man has a bright future. He and all his beautiful siblings. Kudos to the parents for such a great investment in their artistic skill
This young man has a maturity and talent that few can equal. I look forward to hearing his career progress.
Captivating, somebody like Sheku comes along once in a while. He is a gift.
I could listen to this young man all day long. His talent is amazing. Well done Mr Kanneh -Mason. Best wishes for the future.
Been playing this for an hour, while I work. Thank you for enhancing the quality of my work day!!
I know right>?!!! 😉
sublime version
Lovely to hear Isata with Sheku. Their hearts beat as one in this stirring performance.
WOW! I love this arrangement! He does a fantastic job with phrasing and getting at the essence of the song with its various mood changes...what a fine job!
Such a beautiful and beautifully talented young man!
Sheku has the incredible talent of the greatest musical genius and the passion for it of an old soul. It's so hard to believe he's only 16 or 17 here. I'm 10 times his age and hope to be 1/10th the musician he is someday. Kudos, Sheku!
Amazing! Absolutely beautiful!
Tantalizing. What an amazingly gifted young man.
Music like that brings out , that which cannot be said .
Absolutely riveting!
I never get tired of listening you Sheku and all the Mason family. I am so proud of you as an African. May God bless & keep you all safe.
This is exquisite in every way.
I think I've just found my favorite contemporary musician
He is so great and passionate
Absolutely Beautiful. To be able to hear with you ears and feel with your soul.
This is the most beautiful thing I have seen in quite a long time. Sending lots of love to these two amazing musicians.
What does he GET out of having me sniveling and crying? * laughter *
Simply stunning. More please!!
It’s marvellous how much emotion you can convey with an instrument! Divine!🌹
Thankful for being introduced
to this fine musician
How lucky do I fell to be able to watch and listening to this extraordinary young man and his sisters. My heart is touched by this work.
people years from now will say, " i was there."
This family totally awes me....... they are Wonders of the Human World.........thank you all for sharing your talents to us all just mere beings.
For such a young innocent man,he plays like a skilled virtuoso already. His parents are awesome.
Imagine these days creating a family of disciplined determined, creative , intelligent and happy children especially 7 of them in the western world.
Omg . . . Rachmaninoff is one of my favorites. This is beautiful.
Great performance !
Thank you for sharing this very pure interpretation of your talented family, it's so refreshing after many unsatisfying names own efforts on the Elegie :) Regards from France
I can't put in words what this piece did for me in 2020.
So beautiful!!!!!
He is on Spotify Now!!!!! Thank you!
Great performance
he will play for my inauguration
Uma das interpretações mais bonitas que já ouvi na minha vida.
Beautiful listening, performed by such a talented young man!
My family just sent this to me and it is so amazing! What a wonderful talent. How stunningly beautiful - God has blessed this young man.
This is just exquisite
Tajma Cameron I have been on RUclips for the past two hours listening to as much of his music that I can find. He plays with such passion that just gives me chills. Thank you Harry and Megan.
Great talent. Goes to show. He got invited to PERFORM at the wedding of the Prince and Ms markle. Powerfull. We got ring side seats, Much success to this young man and the mother and father that hooks them together.
Deeply beautiful performances!
i gotta learn this song i play by ear (cant read music) omg his sister is so skilled!!! #practice
You should learn how ,it's not hard then keep practicing,it will make music easier .You will see how the composer wanted it played .
These comments are some of the most beautiful comments I've read on RUclips. Just some of the comments like, 'unbearably beautiful' - and "Agonisingly exquisite" and "this killed me softly". You guys are low key poets
Beautiful!
Awesome in its beauty.
Dio mio sacro! Moto...molto...molto grazie!
Otherwordly beautiful,❤🎶❤🎶❤🎶❤🎶❤🎶❤🎶❤🎶❤
Thank you !!!
Listening very closely in his recordings and one hears how connected his breath and playing are; similar to a singer. Reminds me of listening to Glenn Gould's recordings and hearing him hum softly to himself as he played
That was beautiful
And lest we forget, the human being can produce such beauty...
This young man plays with so much passion and emotion. Stunning!!
I have a version of this that he did for Decca and another recording of Maisky, playing the same piece. This particular rendition stands tall among them.
I felt it really powerful!
Mezmerizing ! ! !
👏👏👏👏🎻🎵🎶🎵🎼👀👏👏👏👏👏 wonderful performance
He is feelin' it... feelin' the pathos of Rachmaninov's experience...and to think he gave his parents a bit of grief when they encouraged his genius
So happy they didn't give up. Their children present humble...and talented
Just saw this yesterday and have played it numerous times already. Just beautiful. I am sure there are others but I've seen only 2 recently that I can't stop listening to. No comparison except equally talented Tokio Myers.
What a talent. Absolutely amazing, beautiful.
Wow!! What playing! I am deeply moved.
Bless you 🍃
Marvellous!
I'm in tears.
3:41 an out of this world musical silence (and of course the genuinely GORGEOUS melody following it).
Breathtaking!
Spectacular
Lovely played... what a talent!
Dreamily and Heavenly played ........
I want to hug them both at the end.
Love
He played at Prince Harry & Megan's wedding. A very talented family, we learnt now. 👏👏👏

Wonderful News!!!! Congrats Sheku...can't wait to purchase your album :)
YES!!!! I am RIGHT NOW listening to Sheku on Spotify! Amazing! Thank You!!!
I thought you might enjoy this as well.
Si un jour Rachmaninov avait imaginé que sa musique aurait été traduite de façon si divine par un jeune black dont la beauté n'est surpassée que par son colossalissime talent, il aurait, je pense, exulté de bonheur et de fierté.
Sublime commentaire
@@aleksanderkalicki5518 Merci Luca
Great music for relaxing
Never listened to Classical music except thru my auntie & a few others that appreciate it, but now this young man has me hooked... By mistake... Where's the hidden camera this is a set up... LOL
Dalziel and Pascoe led me to Elgar's concerto where I heard the absolutely wonderful cellist, Sheku Kanneh-Mason.
