  • Stromanthe Sanguinea Tricolor - This beauty was long due for repotting. I used a mix containing peat moss and some perlite, and I mixed it with pumice.
To get the plant out, I used a butter knife, I stuck it between the soil and the pot and pushed the knife inside, towards the plant. I rotated the pot a bit and repeated until I did a full circle. The plant then came out easily.
I loosened the roots, tried to get rid of as much of old soil as I could and potted into fresh soil.
As a reminder, soil structure is very important for the health of your plants. If you've ever heard of people repotting their plants when they can't figure out what's wrong with them, that makes a lot of sense. Besides light, as the no. 1 factor in plant growth, and proper watering, soil structure is the next important thing.
The purpose of soil is to provide stability to the plant, to provide nutrition and hold water. And to provide oxygen. Roots absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide.
Good soil structure, that doesn't compress easily, is extremely import for plant health. A potting mix that contains only peat moss usually compacts quickly. Soil compaction means that the size of pore spaces in the soil becomes smaller. Small pores (micropores) will hold water and not oxygen. You need larger pores (macropores) to hold oxygen. As the soil compacts, it will have less macropores (less oxygen). Without oxygen, over time roots will start dying. As the roots die, the leaf tissue will start to die as well. This is why I recommend that once a year you repot all your plants, not by just putting your plant into a 2" larger pot, but by removing old soil and potting into fresh soil :)

Hi Nellie, you can use 2 parts potting mix like this one www.mrhouseplant.com/recommends/proven-winners-potting-soil-yt/ with 1 part perlite if in terracota pot or 2 parts perlite if in glazed ceramic or plastic. Hope this helps 😊
