Running my fastest mile - Project 5

- I'm back! Another running video! This one is by far the biggest/hardest project I've worked on to date.
Kieran and I were interested to see how fast I, a casual Sunday morning runner, could run a mile. We then thought it would be a cool idea to see if we he could coach me to run a sub 5 minute mile. I set myself the target to do it inside 10 weeks, and even though I didn't get to train as much as I wanted, it was still an awesome, fun and challenging project. The final mile was done with Kieran as a pacemaker in the horrible weather because it was genuinely the only day we were all available to do it. The rain wasn't just for dramatic effect!
Some calculations for you:
5 minute mile = 3:07 kilometre
4:57 mile = 3:05 kilometre
5 minute mile = 2:11:11 Marathon
5 minute mile = 12mph or 19.30kph
HUGE shoutout to Kieran Clements for making this all possible, check his stuff out here:

I almost never comment on videos, but this was amazing. It was interesting, a good length, had good production, and had a real struggle. Obviously stuff like this takes a lot of time, but hoping to see more in the future.
Thank you so much. It was a tough but fun project and it means a lot to me to read a comment like that. I'll try and post more in the future!
Now imagine running 25 of those a little bit faster.
no 🤢🤢
26.2 miles 4.36 minute miles
26.2
What Parker said.
Now sub 2hour
7 months later.. Where's your project 4 video???
Just kidding. Great work. This was awesome and it almost makes me want to take my focus off the half marathon and see what I could do in the mile again..
haha Kieran wants me to run a sub 90 half and a sub 3 marathon next 😰😰😰
You know I'm gonna go sub 5 soon and sub 4 seems crazy but it sounds amazing. And I'm scared of trying but sub 4 sounds so incredible to me.
Nice cinematic shots and a well told story, slick edit, but most of all a beast of an achievement. Looking forward to seeing the next milestone mate!
Thanks Rob! means a lot to me! I poured everything into this project and I really hope it can be as successful as the last couple of videos!
Sam Wade I hope it does as well as the others, I was just going to quickly comment "first comment" incase it hit big straight away! I'm going to go run a mile as soon as the sun comes up to see how long it takes I might call mine project 10 haha
Freshman year of high school I repeatedly failed to run sub 5: ran like 5:03,5:02, and 5:01 twice. I thought I ran a 4:59 once but the clock started 2 seconds late. First meet of indoor track sophomore year I dropped a 4:52 though. Jump ahead 4 years, a few weeks ago I ran a 4:11 1500m which is probably around 4:29 for a mile. Epic edit again btw
Congratulations of the run, thats some real speed! Glad you enjoyed the edit!
I just broke 6:00 tonight with a 5:52... *eh close enough*
Im a freshman rn and i WAS SOOOO DAMN CLOSE AS A 8TH GRADER BRO I GOT A 5:04 and then i ran a 5:00 in a 2 mile split next mile was like a 5:30 tho...
Linkmon99 I ran a 4:43 my freshman year u trash can
YAWN DUBS Bro your also Trash I am a Freshmen and ran a 4:23 miles. Be humble fucker there people faster than you
Thanks for the inspiration man. I just got back into running after way too long of being away from it. No more excuses. You just gave me the kick I needed to keep going and get to my 8 minute mile goal by the end of my first 10 week program. Small steps.
brilliant! Do it!!!!

a 5:40 is insane imo coming from someone whose failed to break the 10 min barrier, makes me rly appreciate the 4:34 pace kipchoge managed for 26.2 miles
He's the boss
He ran 4:29
@@tc7883 no it was 4:34
4:51
Omg that’s where PewDiePie filmed his song: Congratulations
wow
Shit
I noticed
Nate Hibbz why so mean to the god of RUclips
Oh yeah, :D
I'm turning 60 this August. Last time I broke (also the first time) the 5 minute barrier was when I was 45. I'm watching this for motivation. Anyone can run a marathon, but not anyone can break 5. If you talk to any runners at races, you'll find that they avoid the mile because in the mile you are naked and all your sins are shown to the world.
Poetic.... Best of luck with your running in the future
Just watched Kieran Clements come 3rd at the Manchester Half marathon 2018. Well done mate. I did an 1hr 33 I was aiming for 1.30 so more practice is needed. Love these videos keep em coming!!
I'm trying! more work with Kieran coming in every week on his page
Watching this video was simply amazing! Right now I’m at a 5:27 for my mile and my first race is in a couple of weeks from now. This has given me so much inspiration and hope that I can do it. Great job on your training and hard work!
SSGSS Leo amazing work so far! Hopefully the buzz of race day will carry you with speed! Thanks for wonderful comment
Thank you so much brother, I’ll let you know how that goes!
Update?
Thanks for sharing your training plan. Your progression is impressive, watching you shedding off that 30s+ is so inspiring to me
Azizah S. Thanks so much. Love to hear that you got the right message
Good video, glad you are back after 9 months
Thank you so much. Sorry it's taken me so long! Thanks again for hanging on. More to come I promise
My fastest mile in highschool was in a indoor track meet last year and I ran a mile in 4:58. You beat me by a second congrats man :)
wheeeey
this is exactly what i did. Only for a month though. i practiced abbout 3 times a week. my first run was 6:48 and my last one was 5:51
Great improvement!
@@SamWade thanks and great improvement by You!
My Personal best for this year was a 5:13, but I really wanna go sub 5 for next year.
Training plan in the description.... Get in touch with Kieran's coaching business... He'll guide you
What's his coaching business?
That was I was running as a freshman. I'm number 3 in New York state now, just keep on training. Senior veterans are the best trainers in the world.
Nexus Customs yeah I’m a freshman right now, and I never really decided to train full on for track or xc so I hopefully am gonna hit this summer hard and get fast for xc, and then train hard again for track. Also that’s insane man nice job!
K&J Survival man you guys too quick I’m out here glad I pr’ed 5 sec today from a 6:28 to a 6;23, (7th grade) there’s this 8th header that smashed his pr by 18 sec in today’s meet for a 4:59 that’s just insane.
Nice work. I'm back on the road after hemidiaphragm injury (not mended but just going to hammer it anyway). Basically running with half a left lung and man is it tough. Only six months ago I did a 1.42 half marathon and now I'm struggling through two miles. Long way back and miss those long 5am runs so much, but a nice inspiring video, thanks.
You can do it man. Recovery takes time, but there are hundreds of stories out there of people who achieve greatness after hardship
Damn, my miles 4:53, I was freaking out you were gonna beat it the whole time. Going sub 5 in 10 weeks is great, hats off to you.
haha I reckon I could crack 4:53
First thing he says when he breaks 5:
*F****** *beautiful*
WeirdoFish you know it!
As a 4:46.45 mile runner myself I know sub 5 is harder than everyone thinks! Great to see people working hard for their goals. Congrats!
Respect brother
If he ran in spikes and dry weather he could shave 5 seconds
Agreed.
ive always felt running in the rain was always the best, I got most of my PRs from those days. that's only my opinion though. spikes definitely would've helped
Some runners like Kipchoge think the rain adds a little more oxygen in the air and helps them a little bit
yea i don't mind the rain in the track. In a road mile with slippery asphalt and 180 degrees turns is another story.
ryder brabo rain and cold weather is better for distance running the only factor that it would hinder you is the weight of the wet clothes
Amazing performance….incredible improvement in a short space of time. Loved watching your journey. Well done. 👏👏👏
Thanks! Running the london marathon in a few weeks!
@@SamWade Awesome….good luck with that !! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I love running. The great thing is, of by what they say running can help you get fit, that would be perfect for me. I love running. Probably my favourite sport.
Stay focused my friend
Well done on cracking it. Hopefully this year I'll do the same.
It was great fun! Make sure you smash it!
@@SamWade thanks a lot, I'm determined if nothing else. At 41 it's gonna be real tough...and all my friends doubt me, which has only fuelled the desire to do this. At the moment I'm doing steady state cardio - and watching motivational videos like yours :)
he ran a 4:57 mile in 10 weeks in the time that it took me one track season to run a 4:57 1600 pr. :(
Still an achievement to go sub 5!!
meanwhile, I'm here trying to break a 6 min mile
Keep going! No one is limited
@@SamWade I won't stop
Thats most peeps goal. 6 is haulin ass. 5 is competitive runners time. Most "joggers" can't do 6. 6 or better is running
6 isn’t too hard just do a lot of long easy runs and then do some intervals
I broke 6 in middle school....
I didnt not believe you could shave off over 30 seconds in 10 weeks. But you surprised me. Well done
Thanks so much. I promise I worked my arse off
5:34 first mile ever? Damn dude.
Batteries well it wasn’t my first ever mile, just the first one by itself on a track!
@@SamWade still freakishly fast!
These videos are so incredibly made, one piece of advice I have that my cross country coach says is to not cross/ sway your arms, but to keep them going straight :)
fair enough haha thanks so much for the support
Wow, i thought you had 2.5 mill, you really deserve more, this was a sick video with some incredible shots
Too kind! Means a lot
Good Work Bro. Look forward to watching more of your work
Papa bless
Nice job inspired me I got 90 days til track season to run a 4:57 at least currently at 5:20
get out there and do it!
this spring was my first track season (sophomore) before my fastest time was a 6:16 now my fastest time is a 5:17 its been about 10 weeks since this season started
Nice work... sub 5 soon
Great job bro!
i failed to run sub 5 my 8th grade year with a 5:04 and recently broke 5 with a 4:55 in the end of my freshman xc season the fact that you simply broke 5 with 10 weeks of training is just impressive that u could just pass people who been running 3+ years, the shear amount of talent that u have is amazing
『Hector』 I’m flattered, thank you. Great work on your own run too!
Inspiring accomplishment and inspired production.
Beautiful work dude! Absolutely loved your videos so far and they inspire more than you think ;) been training one and a half year now for the dutch airborne brigade and ive watched the 2hr marathon and therapy videos time and time again when I struggled with getting out to go run, they always pushed me through. Huge thank you is well deserved I think haha :)
wow, what an incredible thing to say. Powerful stuff. I'll try not to keep you waiting so long for the next one
Sam Wade every word of it meant. and no need to hurry man, keep it as enjoyable for yourself as watching it is for me!
This channel is perfect
Big statement! Thank you
I ran 4:50 for the mile at age 50. Now I can only do 5:35 (age 63
Sam could have run in the 5:20s with Callum pacing in the first trial. Still, great improvement!
Those are some serious times regardless of age. I agree with you that I might have been able to hang on in my first run but I promise you I put my soul into this project
@@SamWade And it shows! I know the pain and the satisfaction- I ran my first sub-5:00 in 1973, my last in 2007, and consider myself blessed with every pain-free mile nowadays. I look forward to your other adventures, you clearly have talent and drive. And give my props to Callum, he did a great coaching job. It is almost as hard as running it yourself!
fantastic video, and even better run! 4:57 from mid 5's in 10 weeks is pretty remarkable. Loved how your buddy wasn't even out of breath too lol ;)
Thanks so much, Yeah that's steady pace for him. Easy work
@@SamWade I ran 5:02 when I just 13, but was then subsequently derailed by more than a decade of injuries. The last couple of years I've gotten back into running, and your video inspired me to shoot for that 5 minute mark again. I think I'll give it a go this year!
Jesus 155 miles in 10 weeks and a 4:57? Pretty damn talented
much love
Awesome vid, thanks for sharing the training plans too. Really enjoyed it!
Happy to help!
When he said “ anyone can run “ ♿️
Freaking impressive. Great job
Thank you
I like how Karen didn't even sweat it but you were dead at the end 😂💀😂
Standard
Well done.
From India
I miss running so much I’ve been injured for 4 months! Watching you run round Suffolk reminded me how much I love those late evening summer long runs 😍😔
How is the training going? Are you still running a lot?? I really want to get sub 4:50 on the mile now I reckon you could beat that too
Thanks man. Ah That sucks, you'll get over it and you can get back out there. I'm back in the gym now doing more weights and bulking up a bit at the moment. But I'm confident that when the summer roles around we can both get out and be fast again
Sam Wade
Nice one, try to get 4:34 you can do it, thanks for the reply
Damn, i feel like i need to beat his time now.Trained the whole summer hope it goes well
Do it Do it Do it!!! Make a video and link me
this is so motivating man. amazing job
Glad you enjoyed it! go get it
I also shaved 35 seconds off my time in 10 weeks, except my starting point was 7:50. My watch would let me believe i always had a 7 minute/ mile pace only problem was that my watch was about 10% off. On track it wasn't even close. Gosh, will I need 2 years to get my pace from 7:15 to sub 5 minute?
just stay on the grind and you'll achieve your goals
What an amazing video with breaking the goal
Thank you! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
@@SamWade you’re welcome! Breaking 5 is also my goal!
the heal striking is strong in this one
Loved this! Keep up the good work
Great!! Thanks so much. It was a lot of hard work
Great job Sam!
Ryan Dubose thank you
Good job
Sniper9143 thanks
This is video is honestly so good, really entertaining as well as informative. Real inspiration for my goal of sub 20 5k in 2020
AddySwann glad you liked it! Keep training hard and you’ll smash 20!
@@SamWade cheers, I've watched some of your other videos the presentation is really cool. Good luck in the London Marathon!
I got a 4:59 mile and im 12 but then again I run a senior in highschools average time
oh yeah cool man
I got it like 1 week ago too
You started with a 5:34... that’s rlly good already!!!
That 5:34 really hurt though
How is being coach Kieran? you are awesome! You got pretty serious on the introduction plan!
John McGovern yeah he’s great! I got way more serious than I expected but it got results!!
Sir i am able to complete 7 min. Mile how to train my self for run 5min mile give me sechdule i have only 2 and half months .for my army physical
SOMEONE GET THIS MAN A PAIR OF SPIKES, dangit!
Got that Casey style edit
Casey is God... and basically the reason I started making videos... I really want him to watch one of my videos haha
His starting pace is way beyond most peoples end goal. 5:35!!! starting time!!. Most peeps try for sub 6 min. Still, it goes to show how difficult a 5 min pace is. They're are too many vids with the title being "5 min pace, here I go". And the comment sections are always full of peeps who think they can just jog a bit and do it. Crazy. Often the video'ers are lying their asses off too. 250 lb powerlifter with no cardio training tries and says he gets close to a 5 min time.
Sean O haha amen to that! Yeah to be fair my first time was quicker than I thought I’d be, but I promise it hurt... this project was so fun though and I’m happy it’s getting recognition. I think it feels good because it took 3 months to make... it wasn’t done in an afternoon just for views
You know what would help is figure out how to stay more relaxed less heel striking and work on flexiblity in the hip flexers so when you do try to increase your stride for a kick you arent heel striking
yeah very conscious of my form. Will be trying more drills over the summer to change a few things.
Well done dude!
appreciate it boss man
You sir, have earned yourself a new subscriber lol I watched this while drinking my coffee before a 6 miler and it was really impressive. I browsed quickly, but glad to see you’re still getting at it. Definitely inspiring.
Also, is that a Baltic watch you’ve got on? I was pleasantly surprised to see your video about Ed Sheeran’s watches.
triniboy05 hahah thanks! Glad to hear it kept you going!! More videos to come soon I’m trying to really get back into the video side of things more regularly. The watch I run the mile with is a Breil (only around £200) but the build up to the run has a close up of my Omega, aqua terra! Check out the marathon rejection video for the latest piece in my little collection ;)
Sam Wade ah I’ve gotta look into that microbrand, it looked awesome. I just sold my Omega Seamaster 300 professional SMPc Midsize. Anyway I’ll be checking out the rest of your videos later this evening for sure. Really great production and framing of the shots, I’m looking forward to the rest of your content, hope to hear from ya soon!
Sub 5 mins in just 10 weeks is pretty nuts
Very well done,I say
Will wheaton?
Nice job! Just yesterday i ran a 4:46 at a track meet as a freshman lmao
Nice work
@@SamWade thanks you too👍
Dude your mechanics for a non runner are insane

Well produced good sir. Great edit.

ok so glad you enjoyed it! Thank for the sub
@@SamWade I was just starting to watching under 2hr marathon vid on this channel, what a concidence :)
Mine 6 Min Mile
bro How much time it will take if i practice morning and evening each day
Tell me .
Try it. Try averaging an hour of running 4 times a week and you'll speed up. A training plan is in the description
Well, I think I could do it. 1500m in 4:26, maybe 4:50 a mile
If you run a 4:26 1500m then you are more likely a 4:40 miler
Did you lift weights during this plan? And what did you do on your rest day? And also nice video, mine is a 5:35, hopefully can drop it down.
No I didn't do any weights... if you look at me on the first mile vs the final mile, I think I look much skinnier
Best of luck! 35seconds is doable
Brilliant vid subscribed
Its Logan thanks so much!
Awesome.....Am at 5:36 at the moment.
Dang we almost have the same time, I just ran a 4:55 the other week
Blaine Johnson strong run!
Lol ur lieing
TC no I legit ran a 4:55😂 doin a sub 4:50 attempt tomorrow
Great video🙌🏽
Thanks
Someone plzzzzz help me i need that second link
Man you can make that jump but I can't even break 4:58 over the course of 6 months!
keep going dude
Sam Wade well the season isn’t over yet but if I don’t pr by then I’m getting some friends from high school to pace me through it 🤞
@@samuelroberts8449 the faster you run the harder you got to work to shave off time.
I'm watching this during quarantine and my fastest mile is a 5:30, bruhhhh im so bad
nah man you're so close to going sub 5! A lot of people struggle to break 8 in a mile
Hello Sam! At which Pace I should run 200m, 300m, 400m ( Speed Workout ) , It's not mentioned in The Plan . My Current Mile time is 5:35 ( Near to Your's timing Before ) . So, Please Mentions your speed timings. Thankyou very much for the Plan..
Hi Aaisha, speed timings are a little bit more personal, I would say for the longer runs, like the 30-60minute runs, just aim to stay inside 7minute/mile pace. With the track workouts it's kinda a case of go as quick as you can sustain throughout the session. I would say for 400m work on 75-65seconds and then break that down for the shorter track distances.
Amazing
Thank you!!
Did you add some sort of strength work outs aswell? Good vid
Nothing in the gym
You're so fast my best mile is 6:10 and I started 8 months ago.
speed demon
That is still way faster than mine. I have a 6:49 mile...
If he actually does this in 10 weeks, I'm just going to give up running!
you literally watch the whole thing! don't give up
0:17 what if you dont have legs?
Then you're fucked mate
Loving the video , man
appreciate it!
what is the name of that tool you used to keep track of your training?
Plzzzz help me give me that second link plzzzz
What type of training actually do for it?my pb is 5:15min. I want to run under 5 min ......please suggest a weekly schedule.
Linked in the description!
Nice job
This video is so fucking great, I'm at a 5:46 mile right now, I'm planning to hit sub 5 minute mile before mid May, did you increase your mileage for easy runs throughout your workouts and did you change your ways of eating or kept it the same?
that was awesome _ u deserve much more views
Thanks, I try
0:36 good luck
Freakin awesome man!!!!
Thanks man. Means the world
