Running my fastest mile - Project 5

  • I'm back! Another running video! This one is by far the biggest/hardest project I've worked on to date.
    Kieran and I were interested to see how fast I, a casual Sunday morning runner, could run a mile. We then thought it would be a cool idea to see if we he could coach me to run a sub 5 minute mile. I set myself the target to do it inside 10 weeks, and even though I didn't get to train as much as I wanted, it was still an awesome, fun and challenging project. The final mile was done with Kieran as a pacemaker in the horrible weather because it was genuinely the only day we were all available to do it. The rain wasn't just for dramatic effect!
    Some calculations for you:
    5 minute mile = 3:07 kilometre
    4:57 mile = 3:05 kilometre
    5 minute mile = 2:11:11 Marathon
    5 minute mile = 12mph or 19.30kph
    HUGE shoutout to Kieran Clements for making this all possible, check his stuff out here:

    Freshman year of high school I repeatedly failed to run sub 5: ran like 5:03,5:02, and 5:01 twice. I thought I ran a 4:59 once but the clock started 2 seconds late. First meet of indoor track sophomore year I dropped a 4:52 though. Jump ahead 4 years, a few weeks ago I ran a 4:11 1500m which is probably around 4:29 for a mile. Epic edit again btw

    I'm turning 60 this August. Last time I broke (also the first time) the 5 minute barrier was when I was 45. I'm watching this for motivation. Anyone can run a marathon, but not anyone can break 5. If you talk to any runners at races, you'll find that they avoid the mile because in the mile you are naked and all your sins are shown to the world.

    His starting pace is way beyond most peoples end goal. 5:35!!! starting time!!. Most peeps try for sub 6 min. Still, it goes to show how difficult a 5 min pace is. They're are too many vids with the title being "5 min pace, here I go". And the comment sections are always full of peeps who think they can just jog a bit and do it. Crazy. Often the video'ers are lying their asses off too. 250 lb powerlifter with no cardio training tries and says he gets close to a 5 min time.

      Sean O haha amen to that! Yeah to be fair my first time was quicker than I thought I’d be, but I promise it hurt... this project was so fun though and I’m happy it’s getting recognition. I think it feels good because it took 3 months to make... it wasn’t done in an afternoon just for views

    You know what would help is figure out how to stay more relaxed less heel striking and work on flexiblity in the hip flexers so when you do try to increase your stride for a kick you arent heel striking

    Hello Sam! At which Pace I should run 200m, 300m, 400m ( Speed Workout ) , It's not mentioned in The Plan . My Current Mile time is 5:35 ( Near to Your's timing Before ) . So, Please Mentions your speed timings. Thankyou very much for the Plan..

    • @SamWade
      @SamWade  5 лет назад

      Hi Aaisha, speed timings are a little bit more personal, I would say for the longer runs, like the 30-60minute runs, just aim to stay inside 7minute/mile pace. With the track workouts it's kinda a case of go as quick as you can sustain throughout the session. I would say for 400m work on 75-65seconds and then break that down for the shorter track distances.
