He was great in the movie Gangster No.1

I had the great pleasure of interviewing Malcolm McDowell for Reality Check TV at an SF Bay Area Film Fest where he was screening a new film and getting a lifetime achievement award of some kind. He was doing a really long talk with a print journalist which had me thinking he might not want to do another. And in fact, he asked me "How long will this take?". I BSed with "Maybe 10-15 minutes?", and after looking at his watch, he said OK. We ended up talking for nearly an hour or so, and it was glorious. I think he warmed up to me after I asked him which of his many films he thought didn't get the recognition it should have. After that he relaxed and I know he also liked the fact that one of my favorites among his pictures was 'Time After Time', when he met his wife-to-be Mary Steenbergen and played the protagonist, HG Wells instead of the "bad guy". it was also shot in San Francisco, so he reminisced about the experience of making the film in the City. It was a fabulous interview where we bonded and he even teased me a bit, and he signed my giant poster of 'A Clockwork Orange' with the inscription "Viddy Well". Watch for a re-edited version of this TBA on our Reality Check TV RUclips page.
Excellent! You're extremely fortunate to have had that time with him. But, I know that you know that. 😅 Very cool you mentioning Time After Time. 👍

I’m sure you’ll still disagree with me but I know from personal experience that’s a poor excuse. The truth is Bill’s an ASSHOLE and the alcohol on top of that exaggerates that. I saw Clockwork Orange at age 16. I thought it psychotic. 70 now. Will have to watch it again. Malcolm appears to be a lovely older man who retains his value. Much enjoyed.
What are you favourite films from that era, young lady?
@@AntUasalÓNiadh One Flew Over the Cokoo's Nest, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and maybe Young Frankenstein.
Before I ever saw his unforgettable performances in Caligula and A Clockwork Orange, etc...my first exposure to him was his voice-he narrated the first authorized Beatles video biography=1982's "The Complete Beatles"...which I probably watched 100 times
Malcolm has one of those voices I just enjoy listening to, it is unmistakable. He was always fun to watch in movies even if he shows up in the cheesiest of B movies...one thing I admire from many English actors they just accept whatever comes their way 🤣
Bill, if you DO ever get Paul McCartney on your show, let him finish his stories.
Malcolm has been part of some of the most mental films films ever made - a true legend of cinema.
Probably my favorite episode of Club Random. I love Malcom McDowell more now than before. His most famous parts have been playing very strange characters so I expected him to be strange. He wasn’t. The stories he could tell. I could listen to much more of his story.
Love you, Malcolm. You're fantastic person, terrific actor, and so beloved. Be well.
Normally I disagree with commenters who say Bill interrupts a guest before they have a chance to answer one of his questions. But, this was too much.

@@pt8292I guess so 😅😅😊😊
Never seen such a long interview with malcolm, what a nice guy and still showing respect and fondness for the country of his birth.
You do NOT argue with Malcolm McDowell. You do NOT talk over Malcolm McDowell. You do NOT interrupt Malcolm McDowell. I don't care whose podcast he's on.
Once again, Bill is wrong. The story of the movie Shoot the Moon takes place in Marin County, California, not England.
Bill is really irritating me in this episode. Love Malcolm, who, thankfully, saves the show.
😂😂😂
Bill smokes too much weed. It does the memory no good at all.
I actually enjoy Bill Maher's show and agree with him more than I don't but his need to dominate the conversation and always be right about everything in these longer interviews is so off-putting. Mark Maron used to be a little like this but at least he is genuinely interested in people and their lived experiences. I often feel like Bill isn't really interested in what anyone else thinks about anything.
It is really apparent in this interview. Malcolm is correct many times but Bill insists he is correct and in the case of "Shoot the Moon" claims he saw it recently. I'm English and I honestly think Malcolm knew he was wrong but was so polite he decided just to let him "win".
Was also wrong (and Malcolm right) about the release year of A Clockwork Orange.
Bill is a smart guy, but he's not nearly as smart as he thinks he is. He's also often the "prick" that Malcolm called him here. Not always, but often enough that you have to wonder: what the ...? (e.g., telling Fogarty to his face, unsolicited, that Suzy Q was a lousy song and trying to explain to Penn Gillette how magic works.)
I really like Real Time and think Bill's an excellent host of that show. Of this show, not so much. I've got to REALLY like his guest to want to wince through one of these Club Randoms.
Love Malcolm McDowell, but Bill should have a show where he has guests like Malcolm on and letsTHEM talk! Every time Malcolm started talking about something that Bill didn't want to hear Bill started fidgeting and attempting to steer it back to what Bill was interested in. Shut up, you've got Malcolm McDowell!
It's a conversation, not an interview. That's the whole point of the show. I wish people would stop complaining about Bill's interruptions.
@@cptpepper7731 Thanks for your assistance, Mr Helper, we know what a conversation looks like, but when you persistantly cut off people in the middle of sentences, or intentionally redirect a conversation its called "interrupting." That's why people complain. He interrupts. And it IS an "interview" we you invite a legend to your home for a "conversation." Bill is a huge Beatles fan and for the first time on this show he had someone who was THERE, in the Cavern in '62. If Bill's not interested in that era, or simply unknowledgeable, he simply redirects. Its consistent, and its annoying. He barely talked about Clockwork, nothing about working with Kubrick, and has never seen "If...." or "O Lucky Man," or a half dozen other important projects because he's unfamiliar. He said it himself, he's all "suck my di@k and get out." Its annoying because its a huge missed opportunity. But it sucks because he gets great guests, obviously does zero preparation, then tries to fill a long format with getting wasted and pretending it's "just a conversation." Its set up to be a show, but it often feel like the producer didn't do his job.
can't even be bothered to read his Wikepedia page....Malcolm got annoyed towards the end - called him a prick, and Bill stubbornly doubled down and got testy right back....Bill has his moments but c'mon he IS an arrogant prick at this point.
@@cptpepper7731 In conversations people listen.
It's more than the interruption, it's just not good chemistry. Not every two people can have a free ranging conversation every day.
Malcolm McDowell shows that he is a class act in this interview. Not only did he mention the movie Melvin and Howard he even mentioned actor Paul Le Mat and the writer Bo Goldman. That movie is unknown by many people today.
You have a gold mine in Malcolm McDowell, and Bill doesn't honor Malcolm's joy of acting and experiences.
How many people can lay claim to having seen The Beatles at The Cavern Club in Liverpool? I am impressed!

Oh My! Caligula is alive.
Bill is one of the few interviewers to deflect his own ignorance onto his guest with a very smug dismissive “Never heard of him”. Despite some very annoying interjections from Bill it was still a great interview - never heard a boring interview with Malcolm - he’s always a treasure trove of interesting anecdotes.
Great episode. McDowel is sharp, knowledgeable and has an artistic sensibility. Loved the Beatles discussions! I don´t think Lennon ever called himself a working class hero, even though he of course actually grew up pretty poor. But in the song he´s sarcastic when he´s singing "a working class hero is something to be". Lennon is questioning the concept of what it means to be a "hero" within a system that exploits and oppresses. The song suggests that the idea of a "working class hero" is a constructed myth used to pacify and control the masses.
Glad to see that somebody else is also paying attention.
By all accounts, John lived a middle class life with his aunt mimi. They weren't "pretty poor".

Shoot the Moon is a 1982 American drama film directed by Alan Parker, and written by Bo Goldman. It stars Albert Finney, Diane Keaton, Karen Allen, Peter Weller, and Dana Hill. Set in Marin County, California, the film follows George (Finney) and Faith Dunlap (Keaton), whose deteriorating marriage, separation and love affairs devastate their four children. The title of the film alludes to an accounting rule known in English as "shooting the moon" in the scored card game hearts.
James Cagney remains one of the greatest actors.
Big props to Malcolm!! Caligula is a hoot! Clockwork, imho, one of the best movies ever.
I was hoping Bill would let Malcolm elaborate on why Cagney is so vital. He has always been rhapsodic about that expressionist firecracker in interviews over the years. Music to my ears. @@waynej2608 Cagney in anything. Light comedy, broad farce, biographies, song & dance as well as those urgent crime dramas like 'White Heat'. Improvising bits of magic as he spun in & out of scenes.
My intro to long movie scenes that allowed an actor to move through a set without saying a word and yet conveys most of what you need to know about a character is seen in films from the past. Kurosawa, "Yojimbo", "Rashomon", Ingmar Bergman, "Wild Strawberries", "Persona". You can't dismiss an actor or film because it's before your time. Mr. McDowell was saying that we need to keep our minds open to other ways of doing and looking at things. Just recently watched Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times". Talk about misogyny, gender and cultural misappropriation this film has got it all, but I put myself in that area. It's not one of his best films in my opinion , but what he had to say about class, the wealthy, the poor and abandoned, leaves you with food for thought. Bill needs to listen more to some of his wise elders. We never got to heard about Cagney.
@@delam3869 Agreed. Brilliant performers like Cagney, Mitchum & Barbara Stanwyck don't date. I love the Beatles discussion with Mr.McDowell! I am surprised Bill did not know the Eleanor Rigby string arrangement Psycho connection. McCartney wanted no vibrato on the string Quartet , George Martin took inspiration from the Bernard Hermann score from the movie PSYCHO from that approach, Staccato strings. Malcom is a old master actor, it was a very enjoyable episode but I am surprised they did not discuss Stanley Kubrick! I sense maybe an “off limits” subject?
The discussion about the vibratrato is on the Revolver box set. More importantly, was that Martin was influenced to place the microphones very close to the strings, contrary to standard practice in the industry.
