    Thank you.
In the past Cryptic crosswords seemed such a mystery. I am so glad that I found this channel, you're really helping me understand the reasoning behind the clues.

What leads you to know that clue 1 is add up? I immediately thought of sum up when I read the clue and it's hard for me to see the difference.

It's a double definition, and 'sum up' doesn't really mean the same as 'makes sense'. Think about it.. you might say someone's alibi doesn't 'add up', and you could easily swap those words out with 'makes sense', but you wouldn't say it doesn't 'sum up'.

This is a “beginner” video, yet I’m no less confused about these than before I started watching it… Is there a part 2 to this that finishes the puzzle? I was only able to figure out like three more, but only because I knew the answers, not because I could figure out how the “clues” are supposed to work.

How did you know that 1 across wasn't "sum up" instead of "add up" as "sum" means total as well. How did you know this wasn't the case?

If it's a double definition the answer has to fit both definitions in the clue, so the answer has to mean both "total" and "make sense". "add up" means "make sense" in the phrase "this doesn't add up", I can't think of a corresponding meaning for "sum up". HTH

@@xeozim thanks - are these unwritten rules of cryptic crosswords? I think that's why I have always struggled with them, I prefer rules to be defined.

@@Elbonio they're sort of unwritten, as it seems to vary for different papers / setters. But plenty of people have written about them in a general sense, this book has a pretty good explanation of the different types of clue: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07D251V1R/
Bear in mind that I'm rubbish at them too, so I may not be the best person to ask!

10:15 I know it’s obvious ATLAS, but how does your explanation make sense? How is “sword” related to “sailor”?!
