Why would you take pictures with the dealers still nearby, even when they warned you not to? Americans act too entitled and arrogant sometimes. Also, why go to a 'slum' when you can buy it legally in the U.S.??

      @@faa1412 I was in PR last February and before booking I wanted to know the places to avoid and that place was top one. I dont fear it because I trust that I move off respect and thurl vibes. I believe IF that is the story. Some ppl fly to places and want to feel as they home. So say he wanted some weed. Someone could of told him “in the pearl you can get all that.”Some people also don’t bother to do research on their whereabouts. He was only 24 probably wanted to smoke and even if they told him no pictures.. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would be trapped there still taking pictures after they said not to. I heard they been having issues with black tourists for some time disrespecting their rules and I believe that they took this out on him. Nothing I could see he did to deserve all that by simply coping some weed.. if anything he came to spending money. Nobody know the true details but him and who was there. They killed him like he killed one of theirs or was police/ snitch. RIP to Loat 🙏🏾

People were friendly and kept to themselves. Nice bars and music by the murals of the salseros. La perla can be dangerous, tourist should go down there without wanting to cause trouble and being very respectful, especially with filming the wrong things. There's drug movement envolved and if you're a tourist you should keep that in mind.
    With the pandemic closing many other countries, tourism has gone up exponentially on the island and because tourist were being disrespectful, they got a bad rep recently so that is something to keep in mind when coming here in general. Be respectful and wear your mask. We take guidelines very seriously and out health system is very fragile

    My son lived in PR for 3.5 years and you have to respect la Perla. Please don’t tell tourist to go visit La Perla. Unless you know someone there, you don’t just walk in. He got to play basketball because he knew guys from there and was invited. But when there was something going down, they would tell him to stay out. If anyone just decided to go play basketball or just walk in, I don’t think it would be a good outcome.

    It’s a bit arrogant to tell a local they have misconceptions. I was born and raised in PR and everyone (including tough people) knew going there was basically a game of Russian roulette. The only way to go there safely was with someone that was well known in the area. Crime used to be a lot worse there in the 80s but is definitely not an area for tourists.

    I love it there! The people are freaking awesome ❤️ The history amazing. Slaves and non whites that were not allowed in the city lived there. The strength of community is strong and continues. The night life I enjoyed. Went by myself with no problems. Drinks were really good. Service that was provided was great. Respect the places you go and in return the community will respect you. P.s it's not what they make it out to be. They do for their community and it's from the muscle, blood, sweat, and tears cause the system isn't doing for them. In my opinion the governing bodies just want that location so they will do everything to stop folks from coming. May La Perla continue to grow and prosper.

    Thanks for your respect, but you were a little risky. La Perla is a beautiful place to visit, but you should go with a native guide to avoid problems. As you said, it was founded hundred years ago by the people who came looking for jobs due to no agriculture on the country. They started to build their humble houses in that place, now La Perla. Good and nice people can be found, but is known that they do not want visitors on certain areas where drugs can be found. We are a mix of three races: native taínos, Spain people, and African slaves, so our skin can be black, brown or white. Skin color in Puerto Rico is not a problem for us. Be respectful and safe wherever you go. Blessings from Puerto Rico.

I shot a short video walking in. I saw some people selling drugs just next to the gate... After few steps, the whole street just stopped and looked at me. Obviously, I did not belong there. I was told by a man to put my camera into my pocket and do not shoot any video. Saw some more sketchy people, speeded up my walk, and left as soon as I saw the stairs out. This video is misleading. The Round the World Guys PR in general is a beautiful and safe place to live. Even when I moved to the island in 1998 crime was way worse but The country is small and most people treat one another like family.

    So in 2018 I visited San Juan, I rented a moped and found myself in La Perla. At 1pm in the afternoon while riding through the neighborhood and group of about 6 people pretended like I dropped my phone off the moped. When I slowed the moped down one person grabbed my shoulder and handle bar, another teller “gimme the bike, gimme the bike” and another person pulled a gun from his waist band and I hit the gas and got the hell out of there. I told the police at the cemetery entrance and they said “you gotta be careful” but they wouldn’t go in to see what had happened. The moped shop was surprised they didn’t shoot me. That was my experience.

    People's misconceptions of La Perla come from when the place was ridden with crime up until the 90s. It's not pretty safe now but older people who lived through the 20th century just keep repeating it's dangerous based on what they saw on the news back then.

    Don't let your phones or cameras be seen if u happen to find yourself in there! You need to warn people if you're saying this is some ideal tourist spot. You didn't go or film down IN there. That's a good thing. Someone could think you filmed em while you're just happily munching on a snack n posting a pic. It's definitely one of the places where ppl go for drugs. I don't judge others' money or vices. Not my business. But let's not pretend it's in any way tourist friendly. Esp if u don't know the unspoken rules. Waze will take you down there if you're going to El Morro. Drug dealers counting n dealing out in the open today. Blocking the already tiny street. No way to turn your car back or go around, few intersections. I was looking at my phone gps while they're selling in the car before me. Whatever. Not my business. I'm trying to mind my own business and looking down bc you're STUCK. It's one lane TIGHT in there. Dealer warned me- put up your phone. I wasn't..gotcha. I realized what a dumb vulnerable mistake i made going into ANY place I can't back out from or go around. One bad turn and there was no turning back. Anyone with street sense knows that feeling. This could end badly. If u find things going bad there's NO FAST OR EASY WAY OUT and us tourists can't carry. You don't know who's doing what and they got their own set of rules that aren't posted for tourists to see. It's not a simple respect thing.

    I've ventured down there around sunset. I wanted to buy weed and I found it. I purchased it from a gang of street kids a few who had machine guns. they were nice enough, even though about 30 of them surrounded us with fishing tackle boxes of every drug you had ever heard of. we treated them with respect and we got respect back. Most tourists should stay away ...

    When people tells you not to go there because is a very bad place, when they say that they are not saying you will be killed😂, but just to be careful how you approach people there, and when you see groups of people doing they're bussines and they tell you not to record, and if you keep doing it, now you are in trouble, but other than is a nice place to visit, beautiful people there too, now, night time, don't even try, stay away, unless of course you are a crackhead addict and want to get your med, go, but and get the hell out, they even tell you like that. You are showing your white male privilege by discarding people’s advice to not go there unless you are invited by someone who lives there. I find it very disrespectful to act like you are “ fearless” .. when in fact you are just the least vulnerable and most protected person in society- a white male. Other people will watch this video and think it is ok to go there and film, just a couple days ago a tourist (black man) was killed and burned for taking pictures on the street of la perla. I live on the island and it makes me sick to my stomach to see white privileged travelers ignoring the strong cultural symbols around them. They do NOT want you there- especially filming and advertising it. Please try to check your privilege - it is not bravery it is ego.

    • @theRTWguys
      @theRTWguys  3 года назад

      Not going to make a big fuss about your comment. Thank you for it. I was there for the San Sebastián festival. There were a lot of people in San Juan and in La Perla. Many were taking pics and filming. I wasn't the only white guy, but I certainly was in the minority. Lots of hispanic and african americans there too. All having fun and chatting. I found it to be very friendly.
      Are you from La Perla? Do you know the people there? What makes you believe I was exercising my "white male privilege"? I very much acknowledge that such privilege exists. But I'm having a hard time figuring out how it applies here.
      In any case, I had a great time in La Perla and enjoyed talking to people while I was there. It was a pretty nice experience, no matter how much a few people might think I was crazy for doing so.
      Everyone I talked to there was friendly and genuine.
