Brian, you are mainly the reason I drive today. I've been paralyzed for 17 years and never thought of driving again until I saw your videos few months ago. My injury level is T2 and complete. I'm heavier than you and my legs are thicker, I use a transfer assist wood to jump in and out of my car which is also very handicap friendly, Lexus IS 250 convertible. I guess I just want to thank you for your inspiration. Cheers.
That's great to hear!! I'm really glad my videos have helped someone. That makes it all worth it! I have another para buddy who just bought an IS 250 (sedan) and he really likes it.
I want to thank you so much for the big motivation we have received from you and your videos. My sister is paraplegic because of myelitis and your videos have taught her and our family she can go on a have a productive and inspiring life. Thank you so much for your great example. Greetings from Dominican Republic.
Dude you are sooo smooth. I am a T4 in rehab right now and you are my goal. I talk about you with the therapists all the time. Thanks for the inspiration!
I am in a wheelchair with Spina Bifida at L2-L3. I have a 2002 Saturn SC2. It is a great car for someone in a wheelchair. It is a 3 door coupe and the back door on the drivers side is short and opens backwards so I can easily just pull the frame into the backseat from the drivers seat. I have a similar process but in terms of placement, everything is reversed, the frame goes behind me, etc. I have a Quickie chair that comes apart the same way and the frame only weighs about 15lbs. Friends are always amazed to see the process in action! Thanks for making this video!
Hey Brian I have the same level injury as you have. And mine is also from a motorcycle accident. But my accident was in 1975, almost fifty years and still wheeling. I am still very active and enjoy your video's. I played alot of wheelchair basketball and wheelchair bowling competively. I have one suggestion for you take care of your body as best you can, as it will wear out on you over time. It stands to reason that using your arms in place of your legs over time will wear them out. Also watch your ankles during transfers as they will break open if you don't watch them. I live in a neighboring state and admire your abilities to adapt things to make them easier. The first chair I got in 1975 weighed fifty pounds and the cushion they got me weighed another 10 lbs, look how times have changed. Good luck and keep on keepin on.
Im in a wheelchair..all I do is sitcat home..I sure wish I had a car with handicapped gears to get some independence back..I sit alone home every day..so depressing..I dont know how I will ever get money to get a car with gears..glad u got it buddy..GOD BLESS
Hey, you sit on your hand (when transferring) just like I do! Kinda fold it flat just before your butt hits it. Thanks for these vids, been para 3 yrs, but only just started watching what others do on YT. Like yours a lot, thank you!
I have a folding wheelchair where the wheels don't come off, but it's too heavy to lift over myself. I'm about to start learning hands-only driving, and I have no clue how to get the chair in my car independently.
Hey Brian, I was just able to get my tilite aero z into my honda odyssey for the first time after watching your video! I have a question for you since you seem really handy ;) What are your thoughts on securing the chair/ tires from rolling around all over the place in the event of an accident? I ask because I have 3 kids in carseats that sit in the 3rd row of the van and I worry about hurting them. I put the tires behind the passenger seat wedged on the floorboards between the seatback and the second row seat cushion, and then I put my chair frame sitting in the passenger seat like you had shown in your old video. Should I try to put the seatbelt on it? The airbag indicator light showed the airbag is off in that seat with the chair in it. Also, the tires, should I try to use bungee cords or something? I really appreciate your thoughts on this! Thank you for your response :)
I use a similar method, however, everything once in is where you placed the body of the wheelchair. One wheel is behind it, one wheel is in front of it on the foot rest. The passenger seat is moved as far back as possible - acting like a lock in case of an accident. I'll try to remember to video my transfer tomorrow for you. Gives you 2 open passenger seats instead of just the one. (One in front and one in the back.)
Hello. So glad I found your video. I'm a T10. What type of vehicle would you recommend for a paraplegic parent? I don't think I can manage a 2-door with my car seat
Hi Brian. Your videos are extremely helpful. Do you think a 2-door coupe is easier for transfers and storage than a 4-door sedan? I plan to start driving soon and I'm trying to determine which style will be the easiest to use.
100%. I think 2 door vehicles are the way to go for any wheelchair user. They are so much easier. I also own a 4 door (wife's car) and although I love to drive it it's a pain to drive independently.
To further protect your car exterior a cheap but effective method is 'helicopter tape.' Mountain bikers use it to prevent scratches on the frame of their bike.
Monte Bank yep I’ve been using it for years on my car door sills and my chair frame. I just reapply it on the chair every 6 months or so and it still looks great! 👍🏼
Hello sir. I'm a paraplegic, i drive car and i want to buy a wheelchair which can be disassembled like yours. Can you just tell which wheelchair i should buy so that i can disassemble it on my own and keep it in the car. Thanks
On this car, the seat release is on the middle of the back of the seat which makes it easy to fold the seat forward without leaning over. The power seats also slide forward with switches right next to the center console. Not many cars have these features but I love it.
I was always worried about my fiancé keeping his chair in the front seat, or not secured down… While he was in therapy at KU Medical Center a nurse told me about a man who suffered a traumatic head injury from being in a car accident- … and it was partially caused by his laptop that he had in his backseat.. Soo, I'm kinda weird about loose things in the car- well, for good reason, I guess. After his accident, we purchased a bigger sedan with a bigger trunk (Lincoln MKZ) Anytime I take him somewhere I would just put his chair in the trunk. He actually just purchased an Audi S4- it's spacious, has the memory seats, and also has a hatch- so if my daughter and I ride with him, I can just put his chair in the hatch.. ( It even has a cargo net attachment that separates the hatch and the backseats..)
My wheelchair is a TiLite ZRa and you should be able to find a mobility specialist in your area that can help you order one. You will likely need to meet with a physical therapist because they help tailor the chair to fit you.
Hey how long did it take you to feel confident doing these transfers they way your doing them now ? I'm having a hell of a time trying to do this in my 228i.
i am currently resuming my studies in chemical engineering, T3 injury, lots of handling the laboratory stuff, its really hard, they asked me to write the proposal for the application of physical=challenge people in the laboratory. do you have any opinion? Watching your videos kind of boosting up motivation in me as well. i would love to contribute to community by the proposal.
+aiman haikal Definitely, write up a proposal. I can understand how it may be difficult to work in a lab from a wheelchair with limited core control but it can definitely still be done. Although I don't have real life experience I know it can be done. Just gotta think outside the box. Trial and error is key.
how the T ratings done once paralyzed..? ive heard T1... to T5 on this utube...just coureous about the numbers & what they mean...help me out on this bro..??? still tryna learn...lol 👍
Clayton Meador T stands for thoracic vertebrae and there at 12. Someone with an injury at T12 has a relatively low injury and still has most control of their core muscles. As the level rises you loose more and more. I’m T1 which is the highest thoracic injury. I still have full use of my arms but body feeling and control stops at about armpit level and down. I’m also less stable than people with lower injuries since I have zero trunk control. If the injury gets even higher into the cervical spine (C level) you start loosing arm function which signifies a quadriplegic.
Paralyzed Living ...thanks for explaining bro..! Figured ide better ask & not sound ignorant in the matter...i do try asking about things hoping to find out or referred to where i can...☺ thanks*

Your transfer method is so nice! now, I will practice it to make it smoother as you.
Well done Sir. U make it look effortless.
props to you because the whole side of my car is scratched up from me getting myself and my chair in and out
So was mine but I had the side skirt replaced and covered in protective film to decrease new scratches. So far it has worked great! Video to follow.

How did you flip the front passenger seat forward...the switch thingy to do that is on the other side.
