Thank you for this, very informative and useful content. You have explained everything really nicely. I use an ultrawide for my gaming and i must say it brings a whole new level of immersion which is the reason i went down this route.
Thank you, this video has cleared my mind on what to add on my existing build :) Thank you, keep up the good work bro!

I have the unfortunate dilemma of being a gamer and graphic artist :(
Syrus7sk so?
Editing images/video is not as good on curved monitors because it can have a little distortion. and if it’s your job you’ll need the best product quality possible, for obvious reasons.
That's my dilemma. 4k flat would be best for graphics but 1080p 144hz is perfect for games while ultra wide is arguably the best viewing experience, but impractical for both gaming and graphics.
Is it that impractical tho? With 21:9 you can push the toolbars more to the sides leaving you with a with a wider working area for your project. Pretty nice especially when working with landscape projects.
27" 1440p 144Hz IPS should cover all your bases. Might set you back 800 though
Wanted to say awesome job with the editing man. The transitions between the resolutions was great.
GREAT video. Very informative.
I am looking forward to the day when I can purchase that AW Ultrawide.
Hey man I really like your videos. The SFF builds and this stuff. The only thing I wish you included was how much harder it is to drive the extra pixels going ultra wide. Found out my 3440x1440p 100hz was much harder to driver than I thought.
dude I always gotta get some good food when watching ur videos! so enjoyable
Why?
Thank you I have been looking for a video like this that could tell me what I want.
What an amazing video! Thank you so much for publishing this, it really helped me to decide if ultrawide is good for gaming or not.
you actually deserve so many more subs tbh! keep up the good work!
PrinceShadow - Thanks for the kind words my friend!
21:9 looks very good, but the implementation is inconsistent in its quality, some games have graphical bugs, some have cutscenes or menu's which don't scale properly. Thing that really bugs me is all these things can be patched out and support made, but the install base isn't large enough to work out the imperfections.
I really love this clear non shouting commentary. Too many ppl just put everything loud right in your face for attention sor something. This is really nice tho. :)
really good comparision between these two formats. would like to see this with a additional 32:9 ratios.
>21:9 gives people a competitive advantage over 16:9!
Uh huh, and 16:9 gives people a competitive advantage over 4:3. Welcome to the march of progress. Higher refresh rates also give a competitive advantage.
Depends on the game, 4:3, 3:2, 5:4 are popular in the competitive shooter scenes. Especially Rainbow 6, 4:3 being the most popular. 4:3 on a 16:9 monitor makes enemies heads much larger to the eye
I think it is kind of unfair to limit an aspect ratio to 16:9 or to crop the vertical image to fit it. Why should a game, even when it is competitive, limit player in such ways?
Sure, the argument would be that it is unfair to see more. But it is also unfair that some people have a better pc and that some have a higher refresh rate monitor or a higher resolution monitor.
To make it truly fair, all competitive gamemodes need to be limited to 60fps and 1920x1080 resolution at the lowest ingame settings.
But when they don't limit the player in such a way, there is also no reason why they limit us in a wider aspecta ratio.
Spot on, i think its so stupid when companies try to stick to the past, like move forward or get left behing
from my personal experience the advantage of wider aspect ratio depends on the situation. I find myself having a much harder time getting no-scopes or flick shots on spot due to the fact that the center of the screen becomes harder to identify when it fills out your peripheral vision...
still, since I am barely playing competitive games now, I am very likely buying a 21:9 34 inch. I had a 21:9 29 inch 1080p monitor a few years ago. It was only 60 hz but playing shooters with that wide screen was so much more immersive. that's a blast
@ it may be unfair but remember you can always upgrade your pc and or lower the settings

What monitor exactly
@@MattGarcyaDC lg34ub67-b though I do wish I had gone with a higher refresh rate ultrawide.
I wouldn't restrict 21:9 at all. If only ~1% of the top competitive players are using 21:9 to me that indicates that it does not give an unfair advantage. Why make gamers worry whether their 21:9 monitor will be properly supported in a brand new game?
Yeah I hate when devs dont support 21:9 or restrict the fov. In overwatch, playing in ultrawide aspect ratio actually grants a disadvantage.
it's annoying that overwatch restricts fov artificially. but they believe they are protecting their competitive scene.
I've played in 21:9 before and I agree that it doesn't give enough of an advantage. You're so focused on the pixels in front of you that you don't notice what happens 12" away on the screen.
This is the most perfect comment
i have one 21:9, most of games dont supported well. u always need some manually tuning, sometimes with thirdparty apps like flawlessScreen, or some Hex editor, etc. so better just get high diagonal 16:9 monitor

The next generation of Ultrawide monitors are supposed to have 200hz refresh rate for 3440x1440. What excites me most about this is that it allows you to avoid the GSync tax, as you really won't ever notice screen tearing when the panel is that fast.
show me a gpu which is able to provide 200frames in mondern games on a 3440x1440 resolution.
ItsMeliTastic I'm not talking about the frame rate, I'm saying you don't need variable refresh rate technology on a 200hz panel. The screen will refresh every 5ms no matter your frame rate, and you won't notice tearing because of that.
Ahmet Sait Erkal that's 100hz. No
DrearierSpider1 that's honestly how I feel when it comes to 144hz+ monitors. Why ppl trip balls for gsync over Freesync (which is cheaper) is beyond me
It's 1080. 25". And it's a TN panel. Ew.
I still use a 16:10 1920x1200 monitor, I prefer it over 16:9 but sadly when I finally upgrade to 4k they don't make any 16:10 displays
Thank you, this will be the video i show my friends in order to try to sway them to join the Ultra-wide master race.
Amazing video, it helped me a lot, by far the best one on this topic!
I had an ultra wide and I didn’t like it. It was just too wide, I was getting killed by things in my peripheral vision. I used a 50” 4K TV for a while, but that was just too big for any productivity at all. I have a 16:9 144hz 1ms ordered and hopefully it’s “just right.”
A fascinating & thought out look at the in between of 16:9 & 21:9. I believe I am pretty content with my PG278Q. TBH though, I have never really been able to get up to over a hundred Hz anyways. I prefer all the bells & whistles turned on in game. Want to see all the pretty pixels. Feels like just a numbers game to me. That Alienware though, very sexy.
Hello fellow PG278Q owner! I bought mine day one and have absolutely loved the hell out of it. I made sure I was investing in a nice monitor in 2015 so that way I wouldn't have to worry about that for a few years. Now almost three years later, I'm still very content with my purchase. Seeing all this new stuff is very awesome and sometimes enticing (I'm looking at you sexy Alienware Ultrawide), but my hardware has finally caught up to a point where I get over 100 fps. Back then I had a GTX 780 and at the time playing games like BF4 on Ultra settings, really put a toll of my fps. It was literally a jumping bean throughout dogfights, but thanks to G-Sync, it was all buttery smooth so I never had any noticeable screen tearing whether it was a jumping from 68 to 113 to 96fps. All good.
omgblur I have yet to witness "screen tearing" as an effect. In my time, I have actually turned G-sync off because it has caused too much incompatibility issues with many current titles. Mostly due to "Out of bound", where the monitor can't keep up with refreshes. Even still, no tearing. I believe that & blur is just due to optimization on the software side & not a monitor's fault. I guess I got lucky, mine is still strong.
@David Whitfield Well, hard to tell at this point what it could be. I've turned off Gsync in the Ctrl panel but still persists. I can deal with it but can be annoying when reading text. Now I don't trust any monitors. LoL
@David Whitfield Indeed it is. If I look closely enough, I can see the pixels flicker or shift somewhat. Almost like they are dancing left & right. I'll still use it until it fails though.
This video is really helpful. Thanks. I'm going for ultrawide
great video.. love your channel. on the come up! i really wanna try a ultra wide monitor. just need to save up a bit

No one But if I like playing race games or fps who don't need a map?
No one And unless you have your face in the monitor, you can play games that need to look at the map, at a distance. It's all a matter of custom, not of being bad.
16:9 - for competitive, fast-paced gaming, 21:9 for non-competitive, immersive gaming
tell that to me and my kdr. also in league of legends i got such a large field of view ganks on me are almost impossible.
Thomas Yau i hope that you are ironic
@@alessandroferrari4699 Im not being ironic or sarcastic at all. Having an ultrawide has made me better in all games, especially ones that benefit from an extra 20 Degrees in Field of Vision. in racing games i see shortcuts i normally dont, in strategy games like starcraft i can see attacks coming much easier and see the enemy better to avoid battles, in fortnite having that extra viewing angle i can stand behind a building fully protected and see around the corner in ways id be unable to without 21:9 aspect ratio. And overall single player experience is much more enjoyable due to immersion.
Thomas Yau i wasn’t talking about that, as i also have an ultrawide and it’s awesome, i was talking about the “tell that to me and my kdr” and the assumption that switching monitors automatically makes you better. Also what you are saying is bullshit because fortnite doesn’t support 21:9 anymore

Great job of explaining this. Thanks!
As he said, its hard to see things in his periferal vision, its probably not as big of an advantage as it seems... but it probably is a hell of alot more immersive as the screen covers more of your field of vision, instead of you seeing a square thats the monitor, you have more. Id love to try an ultrawide.
Justyn HaLl Yeah, thats true, very tru, makes sense.
Well a "curved" ultra wide screen might help, and you could also sit a bit far back from the monitor to get a better whole view without turning your head left and right.

@@pikatrainer3835 i have played fortnite on an ultrawide for a long time and the only restriction i have seen is when playing a competitive game mode, like arena it crops your monitor.
Makes Sense, as i watched i lot of FNRB streamers back in the day. TY man.
I have both types of monitors, a 27 in 144hz 2560x1440p and a 60 hz 34 in 3440x1440p.
In my opinion I like my ultrawide a lot better. If you're into competitive gaming, mainly shooters then go for the 144hz. But if you're like me and play all sorts of games like Forza, GTA V, PUBG, Tomb Raider, Starcraft, and Dota 2 to name a few then having that extra real estate is great and so much more immersive. Not to mention shooters look great on it also. And as mentioned have a slight advantage at times.
Even when not gaming having the real estate of 2 24 inch monitors comes in handy for prductivity. Theres even a lot of movies shot in ultrawide and looks fucking awesome when done right.
If money ain't a problem then go for the ultrawide with the 200hz coming out in the future, but if not, then I seen a LG IPS 3440x1440p for $400 on slickdeals. Also another side note, don't go for 1080p for ultrawide monitors. The pixel density is just too noticeable imo. And also try to get 34 inch.
Sorry for the TLDR type post lol. Just giving my insights from my experience. 😎
I've been looking at getting a 100hz 3440x1440p ultrawide, I only have a 6gb 1060 though so will have to upgrade that... I'm looking at around 2 grand total. Is the ultrawide really worth it?
@@jimmygrey6848 depends on how you like to game and watch your media. 100 hz is plenty smooth for me and I rather have the extra screen real estate. Also I'm not bothered by the black bars on some videos. The extra immersion in all games are well worth it to me. Just imagine how games like Cyberpunk, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Red Dead 2 will look in Ultrawide. Just a side note, you can play PS4 on this but you'll have to deal with side bars.
I spent only $450 on my ultrawide 1440p. Worth it at that price imo. For $850 I would do the 144hz model. Soon they might have figure out how to do 34 inch HDR curved 1440p 144hz 1ms IPS or VA monitor. Lol
I ended up buying a 16:9 1440p Ips, 144hz monitor. Came down to money in the end, I really wanted the ultrawide but I saved around $400 which I'll put into a GPU upgrade most likely.

NutPeak - I don't play competitively lol 😁
Very good elaboration on the different aspects of... erm... aspects and refresh rates. Some things missing though, IMHO, are discussion of the pixel response times of monitors, which may or may not obfuscate any advantages of high refresh rates, since there are many panels (mostly VA) which do not have the necessary pixel response time to display true 144Hz, at least in some pixel transitions. Also would have been nice to discuss the literal hugeness of a 34" display, making its edges truly in the far reaches of peripheral vision, where you may not notice what is going on in those far left and right areas of the screen and not being able to utilize the HUD to its most when it's there, due to the need to move your eyes in order to discern text or pictograms.
I am currently using a 32" 16:9 display but in a 21:9 configuration which results in a pseudo ~30" 21:9 display and I find that it's on the edge of usefulness, me being about 60-80 cm away from the screen. Anything larger would be too far gone on the sides in order for them to be useful.
I wouldn't argue though that bigger screens improve the immersion, despite some of the information displayed on them being hard to identify due to being in the peripheral vision.
I so wish a 29" IPS 144Hz 2560x1080 monitor existed...
If only Asus or Acer would effing release their new ultrawides that are suppose to have a 200Hz refresh rate
Those things are gonna cost $2k+. The Asus 4k 144hz FALD monitor is coming in at $3k. Not to mention they use a shitty VA AUO panel and apparently can't be able to do 4k 144hz HDR without chroma subsampling...which is disappointing to say the least. 4:4:4 with HDR at 4k is limited to 98hz. Not even 4k 120hz HDR can be done without chroma subsampling. That's horrible. The Asus 4k 144hz HDR FALD monitor (which the ultrawides will be based off) still uses an 8bit panel...so technically not even HDR10 compliant. Then the local dimming has been shown to cause distracting/annoying halos around bright objects on screen, like your mouse cursor, and there are videos of how slow it reacts to movement on screen, and it looks pretty bad.
GrayFox370 exactly... I dunno why ppl are so excited for it. I'll be jumping on this train in maybe 5yrs once technology has improved better and it's fucking cheaper too.

Ive owned the Acer Predator Z35P for a few months, I like the idea of ultrawide gaming and it really is a blast for single player games and multitasking with several windows. I’m excited because today I ordered a 75hz ultra wide hdr10 29” 1080p freesync IPS display from LG for $189 on sale on Amazon.
Normally it’s $250 but Black Friday had some sweet deal this week.
Friend recommended it to me because he loves it, budget now is $189 for ultra wide with HDR10
Gaming on a ultrawide is great but watching youtube or netflix is awful with big black bars at the sides of the screen.
Most movies are shot in ultra wide
Watch RUclips on Tablet , Bro
Search chrome/opera extensions
Low Money but interested in 21:9: Get 21:9 with 60Hz or 75Hz
More money and still interested: 21:9 +144Hz or more
Low Money and not interested: 144Hz FHD
_Poor like me: Nothing. xD_
I simply connected 16:9 4K TV , made 21:9 custom resolutions , turn off upscaling and it looks incredible.
Haha i loved that jab to linus at the end
Ytf so expensive jeez
Itualis just buy 3 of the 200 bucks monitors and its still 100 cheaper than a similar ultrawide
Bhavdeep singh sidhu well buy them fuh meh nah
24 inch 16:9 144hz ftw!
*240hz 24,5 Inch
@@chopper_oni5963 not the best value. But yeah essentially the best for gaming.
and you play esports..For real games you need 1080ti for use all 144hz ,maybe sli
you can always turn the settings down. silly.
yea, you bought 1080ti to play games on medium settings :))
I really value your videos, you got me into sffpc's. Honestly unlike most tech channels, you keep it real and don't just recommend the most ridiculous and unnecessary product first. keep up the good work man!
Happy that he mentioned the witcher 3 that's the only reason why I'm getting a ultra wide screen
I got a 16:9 1080p 144hz monitor for €150 xD
Link?
Lukas you are lying
That's avg price in US. I got a 1440p 165Hz Gsync for $280 biggest steal ever
@@theendurance can you tell me the name of the monitor or a link
Your ingame FOV is too high.
Denny Bh That's not a problem
The perspective is too skewed towards the edges. Classic mistake when you get a 21:9. If you don't think so, then that's cool.
Fov is personal preference.
Denny Bh Pft...you don't wanna see my FOV then XD. I play at 120.
Denny Bh Always played on highest available Fov, I myself have a hard time playing games such as CoD with very low fov compared to most other games. So high Fov = Happiness
coming from a benq 24 inch for the last 5 years , i would be happy with either of them
Such a good video....subscribed!
