- Get it? There's a subtle pun in the title. So subtle.
The Twist Ultem is an experimental sort of pen that is made on a larger version of the Schon Full Sized Fountain Pen platform. This one is available with grooves or without, but only at pen shows or via DMs or email. I don't know that this will be a regular offering from them, but it is very neat and you should contact Ian Schon through his website or Instagram if you're interested in getting your hands on one. OR: come see us at the Schon DSGN table at Baltimore's Pen Show this weekend!

** This pen is a loaner for review, and I may buy it. I try not to let that sort of thing color my reviews. What you see is what I got. Thanks so much for the support, Patrons! **

I just want everything Ian makes. I love the wavy twists on that Ultem. Great review. Your enthusiasm is infectious.
Hope this pen makes it to regular production, I like thicker pens.
I think this will be a platform for all sorts of cool designs in the future. I like a bigger pen, too.
Thanks to you I’m a Schondsgn convert. I understand your enthusiasm.
Schon is really pushing the creative envelope on fountain pen design.
I am like you. I want Schon to really venture into larger pens.
I don’t know what he has in the design-pipeline, but I’m glad to see this larger version and maybe some EVEN BIGGER ones in the future. 😃
Really want him to make a twist smaltem.
A mini-twist!
@@inkdependence by the way good meeting you at the Baltimore show. I think we picked up 3 SchonDSGN pens. Still waiting on my March Monoc…
Big fan of Schon here, but Ultem - to my weird eyes - looks like clear resin that smoked 20th C French cigarettes for 3+ decades, and really enjoyed doing so. As I said, I’m weird. :) I’d buy the Twist model in a different material for sure.
So you’re saying you love how it has been living its best life. 😆
@@inkdependence yes that’s exactly it!! 😂
Is the #6 nib really worth $200 more? Ali express has ultem fountain pens for around $50
I will definitely be special ordering one. I was thinking one with a monoc but I may not because I heard the monoc is wet and I want to eyedropper this one. I have all his other plastic pens and this seems like a worthy addition to the line
How’s the step down from the barrel to grip? Is it noticeable when writing since its thicker than the standard ultem?
Honestly, I never notice the step. There is one, of course, but the section is long enough that I don't notice.
That custom…. Who is the maker?
A good friend of mine named John Albert. He does amazing work, but he doesn't take commissions or anything like that.
Ian is working on an oversize pen.
Oh, I know. And I'm sure I'll grab one when he makes it. I'm fine with Ian taking his own time, though. Whatever he comes up with will be great.
Nice looking pen. A bit pricy. Did you mention which ink you used for this video? If not, what is it. Also, what ink do you have in the mango TWSBI you showed?
The Schon pen had Nahvalur’s Mango Sorbet, and the TWSBI has Anderillium Flapjack Octopus.
The price isn’t insignificant, but there is a lot of design and finishing work in these pens, and I think it’s warranted. Of course, everyone’s value perceptions are going to be different, and I’m not here to tell anyone how to spend their money. I’m just showing a cool pen. 😃
@@inkdependence absolutely agree!
@@inkdependence thanks for that info on the inks
The pen is super nice the only thing I don't like is that pee yellow color
🤷🏼♂️ It’s not the material for everyone.
Yeah, definitely an odd color that I don't feel strongly about. It's a very dated look...it gives me that vibe of something that sat out in a house in the 70s where everyone smoked 3 packs a day lol. The material is apparently awesome though, and while this specific color is not my cup of tea the Black Ultem version looks incredibly sharp.
What ink did you use?
That’s Nahvalur Mango Sorbet.
