Ever party with the disco people after a show in the late 80's, early 90's? Somebody had a microbus loaded with a PA system. Boogied down till 3,4 in the morning with these people often. Great times on tour!
Jer's main guitar at that time was in for repair and he used a marvelous Travis Bean for this legendary tour in the spring of "77...Damn thing sounds like a calliope on this one! Friggin' great instrument!
Saw them in the magical real of "77" had the blessing of catching my first show in 77 was 13, ..saw about four shows in 77....needles to say that was all it took...have been hooked ever since....gladly and ever.so.willingly!
This is just so good. If I were hearing this live the sound would take me there..its taking me there on a Wednesday night in October 2024. Peace and love
Man there are a lot of killer versions of this from 77 and 78, Donna shines on all of them. You know, it took a while but I can say now that I am totally in love with Donna. I'd give anything for a time machine. (+_+)
this one has better vocals by all members, which is really important for a tune that has all three singers harmonizing, so this.. Cornell has very tight transitions and the instrumental part feels like a story rather than a jam.. not better just different... i actually love the dead when they are loose and wild just as much as I like there shows where its super tight..
according to a Bobby Weir interview I just read. This 5/15/77 Baltimore Civic center is the best D.I.T.S. version. Dam, I didn't get to see 'em till 8/80 but I recall they were very tight.
Funny how this jam jogs my memory of a grateful dead tractor trailer with the dancing skeletons on the side (one skull backwards) traveling west on market st in phila at night. This tune came into my head while i was thinking "i wonder if he is lost". I still see the truck when i hear this song.
Not to make this a life story but my journey with music has taken me down many paths, grew up on dead and phish hut now stand firmly in the heavy Metal genre preference, that being said I'm used to fast as fuck music but I have NEVER heard the dead play this tempo (or JGB for that matter)..SMOKER for sure!!!!
& dancin in the streets...this is an invitation across the nation, a chance for folks to meet...lets come together, right now...Jerry was never more wired to the dancin than '77, i mean please, who ever did a better Dancin jam! Then there was Estimated on the burnin' shore, Terrapin! I give to you- good time to be a deadhead! Jerry in the groove!!
@@jimmiddleton9951 The Cornell Dancin is more focused. Many of the other ones from that era tend to get noodly, even for GD standards. Calling any Dead show the "best ever" is really an exercise in futility. It's like comparing professional athletes from different eras. Each era of the Dead stands on its own merits. Having said that, I understand we do like to get in the weeds with stats and whatnot (~):}
Chuck ... but have you ever listened to the Sportotorium show? It’s the best show ever. Jk man Ive got like 15 favorite shows, I know there’s no such thing as one best Dead show. Except for 5/22/77. Im just kidding. There’s 3/19, 4/25, 5/7, 5/15, 6/9, 10/11, 11/2 in ‘77 alone, and don’t get me started on ‘70, ‘72, ‘73 or ‘74.
and the pix is an error, showing "Tiger", which at that time was just a wet dream running down it's maker's leg...Travis Bean was cream-colored...what a great tone with that baby!
I prefer the direction Keith and Donna took the Dead....Brent was great, high energy, but they left behind such great gospel, jazz, country influences. Anyway, at this time, Disco was popular and the Dead put it out their way. Cosmic Disco... anybody remember "Cosmic Wimpout" ?
of course this dancing is one of the best pablow just hooked them up with a load.. the best performances from the late 70s were based on the quality of the yayo they were getting
i've never heard this one or 10-11....have always thought Barton Hall was the best (5-8) and it's great, but this one here is way jumpier and springier....and seems as good as jerry's drugs were on 5-8, he was in a great zone here too
Love toward the 3/4 mark they go into what I call the sonic shift...I'm a musician, have no idea what the correct title for what I'm referring to is ....but 9 totally dig it....I'm sure I'm not the only one lol.. .
Dancing in the streets is a motown song but Grateful Dead is better at it anyway. Not a fan of Original motown version but this is nice. I already got a tons of Jerry Garcia band cds and Grateful Dead cds cds too lol And there's tons of other music of different types I listen too. Overall I'm addicted to Dead music and I never sick of it!
Damn - great upload! EXCELLENT FORKIN' VERSION! Oh no, 😖 it's donna. It was donnas' lip - if I can't sing in the band, KEITH WON'T PLAY IN THE BAND, donnas' trip. MICKEY HART wanted to make DANCIN' IN THE STREET, "rap". Dam OUTASITE licks!!! If uptown funk don't give it to you, play that funky music, white boy!!!
ALWAYS THE BEST ALWAYS THE BEST ALWAYS THE BEST most interesting rock music out there - maybe Cream, Hendrix and Zappa could get there for PSYCHEDEDLIC DEXTERITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Man Jerry is COOKIN here Heard just about every cover of this song From van halen all the way too thw god awful David Bowie and Mick Jagger cover This one right here blows ALL of them out of the water Yes Even Cornell 77’ Yeah thats right. I said it
Hes using a Mutron. I believe he is using the High Pass setting for this tone. Im fairly certain you can achieve it with a Qtron or any envelope filter with a High Pass setting
If I only knew how much that first show in '78 would change my life. "We didn't know we were making memories, We just knew we were having a good time" NFA
Disco Dead is the finest Disco ever!
@ JC Edwards
It IS!!! Those are dam funky licks!!!
YES SIR
Ever party with the disco people after a show in the late 80's, early 90's? Somebody had a microbus loaded with a PA system. Boogied down till 3,4 in the morning with these people often. Great times on tour!
I love this ... imagine being there dancing for real in 1977 during disco mania ... whoa
Oh HELL yes! I was too young then, but oh what a mighty time it must have been!
My favorite version by far. Thanks for putting it down
Jer's main guitar at that time was in for repair and he used a marvelous Travis Bean for this legendary tour in the spring of "77...Damn thing sounds like a calliope on this one! Friggin' great instrument!
Wow
I love that thing
it's the "mutron" an expression pedal that let's you dial the "q" and gain giving an automated wah sound that is dynamic sensitive. pretty cool stuff
IT SOUNDS TRULY INCREDIBLE
He used a Bean for a few years starting in 75. Not to be a stickler😇
Saw them in the magical real of "77" had the blessing of catching my first show in 77 was 13, ..saw about four shows in 77....needles to say that was all it took...have been hooked ever since....gladly and ever.so.willingly!
Thank you Jerry.
This is just so good. If I were hearing this live the sound would take me there..its taking me there on a Wednesday night in October 2024. Peace and love
This is why the Grateful Dead was one of the greatest dance band ever. They can funk like nobodies business!
Man there are a lot of killer versions of this from 77 and 78, Donna shines on all of them. You know, it took a while but I can say now that I am totally in love with Donna. I'd give anything for a time machine. (+_+)
Donna is awesome!!
Donna adds a rad feminine energy to the group dynamic
Popl
She's still alive, you know. An older version of her at least.
@@Dharmabrot you get it!!
now this is heat , this is the real heat
7:09 - 7:30 that is some next level psychedelic jamming right there
These are some fine tunes
My favorite Dancin of this year actually...everyone goes for Cornell, but this is def my favorite show and DITS. Peace and thanks for posting.
77GGSS 5/22 Sporto version!
The Cornell version had a similarly epic jam, but the opening was marred by a false start.
Jerry going full Pete Townsend at 18:14. 😎

Hard to pass on Cornell but this is a gem

Jesus lord that’s on a whole other level... another universe. Einstein type genius’s doin what they do best. That’s how to jam.
Jerry was the Hemingway of the guitar...
Funny how this jam jogs my memory of a grateful dead tractor trailer with the dancing skeletons on the side (one skull backwards) traveling west on market st in phila at night. This tune came into my head while i was thinking "i wonder if he is lost". I still see the truck when i hear this song.
The JG pictured above is a little later in life. In '77, he was @approx 20 lbs lighter and playing Travis Bean
I'm gonna guess late 82, early 83
Simply cannot pull one thing over on a True Dead Head
INDEED a Smoker. Clean clean clean
This is Cornell level good.
That needed to be said.
It’s great! A little up tempo, but still great
Finest music
Jerry pack a punched his guitar
doesn't matter what you wear as long as you are there. aint that the truth
Just like Beethoven. You think it's gonna end but then it doesn't. Brilliant!
It was over 3 minutes ago, but it is still playing in my head.
@@edhorton2766 it was over 10 times already for me. Cant get enough of this song
Dern tootin'! Love the "calliope"-sound of this arrangement!
Fabulous, this is a superb version and to my amateur ears much better than Cornell. Here the play never gets dull as in some bits at Cornell.
billypreston 5/22 Sporto version!
Cornell is NEVER dull 😎
At this time in Rock n' Roll music history the Dead did a great job in mixing Funk with Rock n' Roll
now this is jamming
Not to make this a life story but my journey with music has taken me down many paths, grew up on dead and phish hut now stand firmly in the heavy Metal genre preference, that being said I'm used to fast as fuck music but I have NEVER heard the dead play this tempo (or JGB for that matter)..SMOKER for sure!!!!
This is so so fun
All we need is music. Sweet music. 🎵
There’ll be music everywhere
Love the Dead!

in my humblest of opinion, 5.22.77 still remains closer to my heart...this has a really cool vibe...
My fave too!
Amazing!
Dang! I thought that Cornhole U. had by far the best Dancin', but now as I keep exploring 76-77 I find a new competitor:)
@Irene Martin I think Beavis went to Cornhole U. :) (~):}
@Irene Martin It's awesome. My fave is the NFA from that show
The Sportotorium show from Florida 5/22 is the best one. The best show ever. Best Dancin too.

My first Dead concert at the cavernous, smokey Arena.

wow 🍄🎈✌
Awesome!!!
Smokin is right!

I am uncertain what yayo is yet I find myself agreed
@@wendifitz151 yayo is cocaine, but I'm sure they were also all doing acid lol, I don't think jerry had picked up his heroin habit yet.
My ears need to cool down after that much fire
Check out 10-11-77 for a really good Dancin. Possibly the best...according to Dick Latvala.

So tasty and so fn cosmic.....
Smocking Hot ..L
Jerry channels Curtis Mayfield
Disco dead not my fave but def not lacking❤️
I like the old school DITS but this moves!
I wouldn't call this a smoker, but they got real nice funky sounds goin on.
Unfortunately it gets a bit boring pretty quick.

🥵🥵🥵🥵
And good loving is from young rascals band i think? Grateful Dead cover that song much b better than the original
wish they had turned Donna down on this one.
Donna irritates me...always has but she is necessary here...
too bad Donna was still with them . . .
*rolls eyes
Damn this shit really sucks bad.
So laughably bad. Worst band ever
